OMG, JoAnne, I cannot imagine your pushing a push mower on a hill—what about the grandkids? Aren’t they getting old enough to come and do a once a week thing for you?
I am exhausted==I just finished bottling my kumboucha==JoAnne you might want to try that==getting more probiotics==and see if it helps your stomach. I think I will take a bottle with me as I have a glass every day. Should take two. DD is doing that also—we are making our own so costs nothing other than the tea.
Cleaned out fridge and ran the dishes—in the morning I must pack the coolers==lots of things to pack so I made a complete list to check off. I just packed my suitcase—seemed easier tonight since I had put the things from which I could choose all together. I always take too much and end up living in my bathing suit and coverup—
I wanted to get a game that Jordan talked about playing==Target did not have it so will try to get DH to stop somewhere along the way and see if we can find it—he said we would all like it.
The climate change is so everywhere==saw where Scotland is about 20 degrees hotter than it’s usual summer weather—I remember being there in 1986 and I wore about five layers of clothing and was stil cold and it was mid July. Death Valley hit an all time high the other day—127! Was 111 here today—ugh! Thank goodness we put solar in-=our power bill was 19$ this month and it used to be over 400–and now it’s hotter!

It seems like the extreme weather variations are getting more frequent. It’s actually cooler than usual here, only in the mid 80s next week. Usually hit our hottest days around now. The pain comes and goes. I’m also exhausted all the time. I don’t know if it’s from my BP meds or just day to day working through my hearing/vision. I am going to try to take off Thursday to get much needed appointments in. I may just need to try tonget some massages through physical therapy so I can get them covered by insurance. I feel like we’re playing catch up at work and we’re in a race to finish everything before the semester starts. Joan, have fun at the beach. Got any good books to read? Sue, I found some Lularoe dresses for cheap on ebay and am going to see if I can find someone who sews to cinch them so that they will be wrap dresses. That will to give them a little more shape and go with my black leggings. I have never been much of a fashion expert, but there are some fun ideas on Pinterest. Jo Anne, I am getting ready to start on a simple lace stole/wrap pattern that I think will be really pretty with the varigated sock weight yarns I have. Here is a crochet pattern you might like: www.cascadeyarns.com/patternsFree/FW227_HWBloomfieldShawl.pdf. I may just have to learn how to crochet again so I can make it myself. 😊

Global warming is really affecting beach week—higher temps but scariest this is how warm the Pacific Ocean is compared to the past 16 years we have come here—we used to wear wet suits to be comfortable swimming and today we are all in the water in just our swim suits—and the skinniest amongst us who used to freeze are totally comfortable. Not one surfer in a wet suit today. It’s crazy.
Had a great day tho—rode bikes down the boardwalk to get an açaí bowl at a favorite place, then to the Newport Coffee Shop and they had a farmers market—bought DGD17 a really neat necklace for her birthday (Sept 1) and rode back—spent the day at the beach and then came back and warmed up my prepped rice bowl veggies and cooked the rice—I had DH grill some chicken for the carnivores in the group and dinner went over great. The kids loved the rice bowls—had the forbidden rice—the miso sesame sauce was a big hit. So that was fun. Tomorrow morning will have cinnamon rolls and falafel pitas for dinner with beet arugula salad.
We played games last night as we were staying up late to be awake when DD and gang got here from Sacramento.
So tired—I do have a couple books with me but I’m so bad at reading at the beach—I love to sit and chat and walk the beach and get in the water—I did not boogie board but we all stood around in the surf and occasionally got knocked over by some big waves.
Holly I used to love 9 month school when we had summer time to get organized and caught up—once school started you sort of hung on and hoped you didn’t forget to do something crucial! When they changed me to year round I really felt the effects of it—was so hard. Never had a time without kids other than one week in August! Hope you get some massages—if you could find a therapist who really works with body alignment I wonder if it would help. DH has always held his head sort of crooked because he basically used one eye since he always had double vision—it affected his gait and everything. Now that he’s working to correct the eye muscles he is actually holding his head a bit straighter—anyway, I know everything can be “off” when one thing requires more use. Has to be hard, I’m sure.
Sue are you going to be gone for two or three months on this cruise? Seems you said it was longer than the last one?

Hi!
I volunteered on Tues and Thurs this past week. Met some new people on Thurs. One young guy was culinary grad from Art Insitute of Los Angeles, so fun to talk to him.
Jojo, are you still having the pain in your ribs? I really wish that you will be pain free one of these days. How was your appt with the pulmonologist? Our cruise is from Los Angeles to Sydney, with many stops along the way, including quite a few in Hawaii islands.
Holly, hope you are getting some rest this weekend. The shawl is very pretty.
Joan, DGD17 isn't at the beach with you right, she's in NY? Did you find the Jordan recommended board game? The cruise is 56 days and we'll stay a week in Sydney. I'm kind of scared by the length, it's longer than our last cruise by about 20 days.
Not much going on here, it's been rainy off and on all week. Rained this morning but sunny now.
We had a friend of a friend stop by for drinks and to look at SO's art. He is also an artist. We've known him for years through our mutual friends but it was the first time we really got to talk to him, rather than cocktail party chit chat, so that was nice.

On the road home—no horrible traffic thank goodness so we are already out of LA and headed up out of San Bernadino—met at an old beach cafe called Cappy’s for breakfast at 9–they seated us together so was a nice finish to the week—packing up was so easy because we had DD and DSIL and Vegas DD and four kids, all who helped—got up at 6 and were driving away by 8:45–and DH is not wiped out because DSIL and DD’s helped so much. Which is the way it should be.
Sadly I booked a flight for DGS17 who knows he is only allowed to come if he is willing to be drug free for the week—DD caught him smoking pot Thursday night in his locked room—I booked him out of Orange Co airport and DD and DH took him at 9 am—flight at 1:00–and it was routed from here to Phoenix and up to Vegas so he had lots of time to himself. DH and I talked with him individually and told him the most valuable thing he owns is the trust that others have in him—if you betray that with lying you lose something way more important than money or jobs or whatever—he just stared at us with “non seeing” eyes—a skill he has perfected unfortunately. It may seem harsh but we have four other grandkids and had two visitor kids with us—cannot set a precedence that it’s okay to just ignore the rules that have been set. It was a hard morning though and DD was beside herself with grief that he once again admitted he has deceived her—and he charms and cajoles and—you’d have to see it. He is becoming his narcissistic dad—it is almost classic behavior. Now he works at blaming his mom for his actions—a skill his father perfected in their 18 years together. She grieves that she stayed with this marriage long enough to have her child adapt all the same behaviors. We probably have “lost” a GS for some time as he is angry and his father is badmouthing us to him big time. But, all the kids were supportive of the decision including his brother DGS14 who said he doesn not want him to come next year as he is so angry at him for bringing the pot into the week. So sad to see such a brilliant kid so self absorbed and so dependent on something that he will lie to people he loves and seems to actually want to spend time with.
DGD17 was here, Sue—but only through Tuesday as she was hired to help teach at a ballet camp for young kids Wed through Friday. She felt she had to take the opportunity to earn some money but she hated to leave. Interestingly, she predicted that DGS17 would do drugs during the week “because, Grandma, teenagers are sneaky and deceptive, especially when they want to use alcohol or drugs.” She said she felt it was naive to think he would honor the rules. Pretty sad, huh? Jordan was awesome for the week as were all the other kids—they played games constantly, swam together (well, Jordan has fear of water so no swimming) , biked and just had fun.
DSIL talked with Jordan a lot about why it was important to work on managing his water fear==told him the stats of drowning in water that is not even over your head because of panic and forgetting that you can put you feet down and stand up. So he challenged Jordan to get wet up to his chest and if he did, he would buy him a cheesecake—his favorite of all foods! Jordan then did two days working his way into the surf a few inches at a time—and yesterday he and I stood together and he earned his cheesecake—his choosing to do it—everyone got out of the water and surrounded him and cheered—it was so fun to see the support that the kids gave and how he accepted that—last night he told me it’s the best beach week he’s ever had with us (I think this is his third) and he said it’s the most time he’s fully participated with everyone. Pretty cool feeling!
I spent all day yesterday at the beach other than a couple walks back to the house for water or carrots for snacking;. Last night I made bruschetta with my home grown tomatoes which BTW ripen so beautifully in humid climate compared to at home and they ate the veggie lasagne I made at home. All the meals worked so well—we only ate out twice for dinners which was nice cause it’s hard with a big group. So overall it was a great week—with one big negative — but that’s what having a kid using substance is like—unless, like SOBSIL you just enable and endorce their dependence along with your own!

JoAnne, I hope you are feeling better—it’s been a long recovery but you really did have a horrendous surgery! Has it been crazy hot in Georgia? I think we are going home to a hot dry 109—just dreading it as my skin felt so good all week! And I love the cool ocean breeze at night so much.
Sue, that is going to be one long, long cruise! OMG, I am not sure I could do it—-would be craving solid land I think! But I know you will be reading like crazy and meeting lots of new people again. Will be some long days at sea with the huge pacific to cross!
Holly, how are you feeling? When does school start again? All our DGK’s start on the 13 so I guess they get one week more vacation to sleep in!
Jordan thinks he wants to go into the field of math/science and ultimately end up teaching—he loves people and said he’d really like to work with kids. Yet he loves math and is so good at it.
I think DD is going to send DGD14 to NYC for Thanksgiving so that DGD17 will not be alone—it is way easier than bringing her home—if they do we would probably go to Sacramento to keep DD and DSIL company—will have to wait and see.

Hi all! Sue - thanks for asking - the pain in my left chest is improved. The pulmonolgist took a chest x-ray Tues. and it was normal. The improvement tends to make me think it was muscular, perhaps from cutting the grass. If I can get the GI issues improved (went to the GI doc on Friday), I'll be tip top!
Joan - soooo sorry that your DGS put a damper on everyones vacation! Hopefully he will grow out of the attitude and lack of sincerety. My GS is now 22 and still is very immature in his choices about life. I do think that the generation in general sometimes has a problem with this. But then there are amazing kids, like your DGD, in that generation too!
We have had a trememdous amount of rain last week which tended to cool things off for now. We are having a weekend break but then the rain is to return.
My old Bridge group has started back as of last week. We decided to only do it once a month so that maybe we can be more consistant. It was great seeing everyone again and catching up. Girlfriends are important!
Went to see Tom Cruise in Fallen, the new Mission Impossible movie. I didn't think it was so good - not as good as others they have done.

Hi all,
I had to go to graduation this morning. I am going to start PT for my neck and hip pain. I went to get a mouthguard as well. Turns out it was so tight that they finally had to cut it in half and start over. It was crazy.
School starts in two weeks. We still have a lot to do.
Sue, I can’t imagine being gone that long. My two week trip to Israel in February will be a long time for me.
Jo Anne, we’ve had a lot of rain too. I’m glad things are improving!
Joan, I’m glad you had a good trip. I hope your DGS’s behavior is temporary. My sister acted similarly in high school, but seems to be on a much better path now. He’s had to deal with a lot at a young age, but has a strong support system it sounds like.

Worked in the yard all morning . Stayed in the shade so it wasn’t too bad . Got a lot done- pulled weeds, picked up a lot of sticks, and used the weed eater to trim up the part of the back that doesn’t have grass. Also feed and watered the roses.
Chores around the house too- cleaned bathrooms and changed bed sheets. Felt good to get so much Accomplished.
Received several of the Xmas presents that I had ordered today ; also a pair of Fall sneakers I ordered. I have to admit. It is fun getting packages in the mail .
DS is moving to SF next weekend. He will rent an apt until they can find a house. DDIL AND DGD will go out on the 20th and DGD will have school orientation on the 23rd. I feel they are going from the floods of Houston to the fires around San Francisco!

Good morning, JoAnne—and Sue and Holly, too. Wow, you worked so hard already—we are in our hottest month—two weeks of July and two of August—during which it never gets under 90+ degrees even at night—my yard just barely survives as I find I cannot get out and take care of it. Weeded my raised beds the day I got home in 110 degrees but they were so bad I just felt I had to. No work outside since then! And really it needs daily attention!
I am back in my gym/cooking routine. Tonight I am not sure what we will eat—yesterday’s beet burgers were just really good—I do have a ton of ripe tomatoes that must be used so maybe I’ll roast them up and make spaghetti sauce which would be relatively painless. Yesterday I cooked literally all afternoon—but it was fun. Just hate washing all the cooking dishes though.
I am meeting DH’s neice by marriage for coffee before gym today—she is the estitician who just retired. She said to expect a blond as she is transitioning to gray—had her hair darker than mine and she is about 59. I am flirting with the same idea but could never go blond as I look terrible in gold-y tones. I’m so conflicted about it—tired of spending all this money to fight the gray.
Holly by now I hope you have started PT and are getting the sense that something will improve. Don’t you think getting all your new implant crowns probably threw you into more problems?
Last night I was so tired I was in bed asleep by 9–did not even hear DH come to bed! The night before I did not sleep well.
Tomorrow morning is my oral surgery to again scrape dead bone away—really dreading it as this is number four surgery on this spot—and they may give up and take out the expensive implants—ugh—also I cannot exercise for a few days and that’s frustrating.
Wow, San Fran is so expensive—but I love the city—the Mendocino fires north of there are so bad—and it isso sad as it is just the most beautiful of areas along the coastline. But hey, maybe you will visit CA again, JoAnne—Your son’s job really gets them around! I know how sad tho you must feel about them going so far again. Beach week being over I always go into this little slump wishing all the kids lived near by so that I could have them to dinners and fuss over them! I did have DD to dinner last night which was nice because DGS14 was with a friend and we just had some adult time to eat and chat.
Holly, I, too, hope that DGS17 comes around eventually to realizing that daily drug use, no matter what drug—alcohol, pot, whatever, is an escape and a dependence==but am not sure it will happen as his model in his dad is that you can do this and still make a boatload of money. We all keep wondering when SOBXSIL will make a mistake and lose his high paying job—he makes over a mil now annually. How the heck does he function so pickled all the time? I really don’t get the functioning alcoholic thing.
DGD17 is getting nervous about being left alone in NYC=on twitter I saw she posted something about leaving home is weird when you only feel 13. It’s hard leaving without the umbrella of a structured dorm life and school life—but I know she will find her way and make it work—I miss her so much. She has the funniest sense of humor and is so entertaining to be around. She is much like her mom—DD. i guess that is also why they clash at times!

Grrrrr! Just lost all! Guess I'll start over. This time in my word processer so I can recover!
Joan – will be thinking of you and praying for little pain and quick recovery with your gum surgery. I can't imagine how you are dreading it! I'll be thinking about you and praying for you to have little pain and a quick recovery. I do love the freedom my grey hair brings. I was paying $150-175 every time I got it colored. Also I now go to Great Clips to get it cut and that is a a great deal less too. It's like giving myself a raise! I know it probably makes me look older but I'm ok with that.
Today worked in the yard again early this morning clearing out some ivey and stuff on the side of the house. Also cut the grass. Should have worn my hat; may have gotten a little sunburned. I do love working outside. It always feels so good to come inside and rest after I have accomplished so much.
Stuck a pizza in the oven which will be done soon

Didn’t get outside until afternoon today; so only stayed about 30 min. Just to hot. Did get the long shoots off the hostas pruned as well as some leggy things off a few other scrubs.
Washing clothes. Will take our neighbor and his wife for Mexican tonight . He is the one who helped with my yard after surgery.
Relaxing now and doing a little knitting. Enjoying an Amazon movie. I guess we need a new thread. I will start it if I can figure it out!
