I finally saw some info on the disposable paper masks, i.e. they are effective. Not as good as N95 (the best) but better than many. The worse are bandanas and the buffs, I think they are called.

They said the gator/balacavla(?) are the worst because they're very thin and they break the particles up so you're spreading more of them.

I saw that testing as well. What is strange is that I thought I'd seen something about the gaiters being really good. I wonder if someone could design one with multiple layers and a filter that would work better. Dh was saying he wanted to get the gaiters for winter.
This is the study in case it hasn't already been posted.

luanne, I bet you are right about there being different types of gaiters. Thanks for posting the link.

luanne , I bet you are right about there being different types of gaiters. Thanks for posting the link. I have a cashmere gaiter, which I love. But I wouldn't think of using it as a face covering.

luanne, the ones that performed poorly were fleece.

luanne , the ones that performed poorly were fleece. I know. I was making a joke.
I still think the gaiters could be workable, if they were constructed differently, with three layers, and made of cotton. In the testing the masks that came in highest were the N95, the surgical masks and a cotton/poly mask. I'm not even sure what the cotton/poly ones are.

just prior to the lockdown, i was still going to the supermarket as needed, and was trying to wear a cashmere scarf as my face covering (i didn't have any masks yet). i kept getting light-headed. those suckers are great for warmth, or smothering oneself!

I also like the gaiter because I can pull it up over my ears and head if I don't have a hat with me. During the winter the cashmere is SOOOOO nice.

luanne , especially where you live with your beautiful winters! Our favorite store for cashmere. Younger dd is a HUGE customer of theirs. She has hand warmers, scarfs, gaiters, infinity scarfs, hats and two ponchos. I have one of their ponchos as well.
