Welcome to Alcohol Free is What We Want To Be!We are glad you are here with us! If you have been struggling with your weight and have found this board you undoubtedly have your own unique, complicated relationship with alcohol and food. Laying out the problem honestly can give you the extra push you need to succeed in getting it under control. A few questions for you to think about...do you wake up at 3 AM wondering what did you do? Do you sometimes have no recall of the evening before or do you try to recover your memory of the evening before you even get out of bed? Is your spouse angry with you...or do you simply think that A is taking over too much of your life, affecting your weight loss? These are hard questions but know that you will find understanding, love, encouragement and support on this thread. We are each in a different stage of this journey but you will find others have shared your experiences. There is no judgment, just an acknowledgement that we have been there, done that. This board of great people will support you in your journey.
Some of us have been here for several years, others are new, but all are welcome and if you have visited before but didn't stay, there is still and always a place for you. Don't get overwhelmed, take your time, if something strikes you, respond. We are great at giving advice, whether you want it or not....you will get tough love, if necessary, but you will also find help. We practice positive self-talk and support, we encourage and gently hold each other accountable. We each have stories to tell, share and suggestions to help. We post different challenges during the year. Please join us if you think this is the group for you. You will be glad you did.

November 1 -December 31 Happy Holidays Challenge
The holidays are fast approaching and with them comes the joy and drama. While we want to be filled with gratitude, we often find ourselves filled with hurt or anger. The expectations of a perfect holiday create unrealistic expectations. As corny as it can sound, we lose sight of the "reason for the seasonā.
We spend time counting points, counting calories, exercising, checking the number on the scale. Then the holidays arrive! We overload our bodies with junk food and alcohol and add pills to make the headaches and stomach aches go away. Do we see the dichotomy?
Our beliefs, our life style, provide an anchor for us. It gives us a sense of being grounded, having a purpose. Holidays arrive and we try to stay anchored. Then someone decides to challenge our beliefs, lifestyle. The oh come on, one drink wonāt hurt, or itās Momās pie recipe ā¦youāll hurt her feelings if you donāt try it or your political views are wrong, here is the stress you donāt want or need! Movies use family dinners with jokes of when are you getting married, when are you having children, when are you going to settle down with a real jobā¦.and it all gets resolved with smiles and everyone on neutral ground. Think āWhile You were Sleepingāā¦.not āHome Alone.ā
The purpose of this challenge is to stay anchored during the holidays and fill our lives with Love and Lose the things in our lives that cause stress, anger and pain. Let us go into 2025 feeling good, even great physically, emotionally and spiritually.
Though we say we are ācomfortable" with the holiday scenarioā¦.crazy Uncle Freddie is going to get drunk, Aunt Wilma is going to make that awful ambrosia, another soap on a rope giftā¦we donāt have to accept it. This does not serve us well. This does not make us happy. This does not make us the person we want to be. Letās walk away from their issues.
Lose the angry people. Do not get dragged into a confrontation. Say āwell bless your heartā and walk away. Blow them a kiss for good measure.
Lose getting guilted to eat food. Bring something you want to eat to family dinners, enough to share but to help you stay on track and feel good about yourself.
Lose 24 hour news TV. Listening to pundits and comedians spout off, does not lift oneās spirit. Use news alerts and headlines then decide if you want more information.
Lose the peopleā¦.for awhileā¦.go out for a walk, breathe fresh air, sit and be by yourself.
Lose the stuff that just doesnāt work in your life. It takes time. Letting go of what is hurting you is more difficult than letting go of clothes that do not fitā¦.though there might be a connection.
Lose the guilt for doing what you truly want to do. Follow your heart.
Lose the regretsā¦the "should of, would of, wish I could of" does not help or change things. At the time it was what needed to be.
Lose being the āgo to personā for everythingā¦.no is a powerful word.
NOW Love it!
Love yourself first. Get/stay healthy, lose the weight, stop the drinking, your journey is unfolding.
Love new traditionsā¦.not everything has to be made from scratch for one. Go out to eat. Stop with the tomato aspic, no one wants it. Put a $ limit on gifts and no gift cards.
Love a potluck dinner not the big production meal.
Love sitting and watching a roaring fire while listening to music.
Love something you want to share with others.
It is good to remember your past but donāt cheat your future.
Let go of anger, let go of the need to do more. You are doing your best and thatās enough.
You are not the shape of your body or the number on the scale. You are loved for you!
You have blessings in your life and remember you are a Blessing. Just ask anyone of us.

Good Morning All!
Rabbit Rabbit Rabbit!
Came home with new meds, now to see if they work. Several theories as to what is wrong but no real answer. The best my doctor could do is possible problems because I did get a concussion??, need to see an ENT doctor, and let's do a round of antibiotics. I could tell she was frustrated but so am I. So just keep resting, eat blandly....like I'm not. I had dry heaves twice last night. She had other thoughts but none sounded logical to me. I will think about it and see how it goes this weekend. Thank you all for the care and support!
I hope I start participating in the challenge today!
Hugs to all, Cindy

Quick check-in this morning. I am going to Batroun to walk in the old city, souks, and window shop then have lunch with two friends. I will have the final seminar on WFPB vegan eating tonight and then make some decisions about what I will do going forward. My husband is taking our harvested olives to the press in a nearby village and hopefully he will be home by the time I return this afternoon.

Hi all! I'm back! It's been a good break from a lot of tech stuff. I signed up on WW again and have done well this week. I am going to run to Walmart for some pita crackers and then I'm supposed to go to the mountains with Judy. It's supposed to rain this morning so I'm not sure if she will still want to go. It will still be fun just to get out of the house. Anyway - I will get caught up with everyone and it is good to be "home"! Love you all! Murphy

Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit!
After posting here yesterday I stayed online and took care of some stuff since DH was out and about. I signed up with Mochi Health for my GLP-1 med. Their intake is much more extensive than Henry Meds was, lots of forms to fill out. I have an appointment on Thursday, Nov 7 to talk to a provider. I could have gotten an earlier appointment, but I like the time I picked better. It looks like I'll be paying $178 per month (with a $40 discount for the first month), compared to the $297 I was paying Henry Meds. The medication is $99, and there is a monthly membership fee which starts at $79 for a month to month membership. It's cheaper if I make a longer term commitment. I want to see how it goes before committing. I also made an appointment to talk with a dietician for November 19. I apologize if this is TMI, but I thought y'all might want to know. I was going to use my HSA debit card to pay for it, but when I plugged in my info it said insufficient funds. What??? I went ahead and put in a credit card instead. While I was in the middle of filling out their forms, I got a call from Fidelity who has called repeatedly over the last week, never at a good time. I had already decided I was going to talk to them the next time they called, so I answered. The guy said he was just calling to see if I had any questions. I said, "Yeah, why was my HSA card denied?" He looked at my account and said it was because all but a few cents was invested, meaning that I would need to move some into cash prior to using it. Good to know. By the time I finished with the Mochi forms, it was almost noon so I went down to the basement to do an aerobic workout with weights. Then lunch and couch time. We had leftover veggie soup and grilled roast beef and cheese sandwiches for dinner. I put the candy outside when I started seeing the littles out trick or treating. I settled myself in a chair to watch the fun and was out there until around 8:30. I counted 110 that came to our house. I ate 3 fun-size bars, but skipped my usual after dinner ice cream, so it almost equaled out. I still had about a half bowl of candy and cheese ball packets so I left those out when I came inside and amused myself watching a few kids come up to the door to help themselves. At 8:48, 3 kids took what was left, after filling their bags, one pointed at the ring camera and they left. Hahaha! I refilled the bowl with the cheese ball packets, but apparently no one was interested in those after that. The people that live catty-corner across the street always leave their porch light on but don't answer the door. From what I've seen, (Mrs. Kravetz talking here) they appear to be from an African country, so maybe they don't know about Halloween customs. I feel badly for the kids that trudge up their driveway only to be ignored. The neighbors next to them had set up on the driveway with a fire pit and sounded like they were having some adult fun. I'll bet they told the kids that came to their house first to not bother with the neighbor. DH was intoxicated before dinner, so he missed all of this. I went up to bath and bed at my usual time, but had trouble falling asleep due to various aches and pains. After tossing and turning for an hour, I read some more and finally turned off the light for good around 2.
It's gloomy again today. I think we got a bit of rain early this morning, the pavement looked wet when I got up. My leg pain was a lot better yesterday, just a bit lingers today.
Liz- Sounds like a good decision to keep your lights off. Yay for the warranty on your windows, glad you are so happy with them. WTG putting away summer clothes and getting rid of stuff and for having AF days. Yay for being halfway done with DSIL's blanket. So sorry that DD tested positive for celiac, I didn't realize that you could be asymptomatic. It's good that the baby is negative. I have no idea who she is but I posted the quote, āI choose to make the rest of my life the best of my life.ā āLouise Hay
Jan- Yay for breakfast at Perkins, getting errands done, dollar store finds. Sorry about the snafu with your prescription. I'm hoping we don't have to move again, but I understand wanting a more senior-friendly house.
Cindy- Thanks so much for the new challenge! Hope the new meds are helpful. Hugs!
Cathy- Enjoy your day in Batroun and lunch with friends.
Murphy- Good to see you back and glad you are doing well on WW. Hope you are able to go to the mountains with Judy.

Your body doesn't need to look like or do anything specifically to be loved, accepted, appreciated or deemed worthy. Rabbit rabbit rabbit! Good morning all. So ready for this new challenge. Going to do my best to be all in. Good to see friends back on the board, let's get each other through the holidays and into the New Year. Thanks for starting us up Cindy. First off, who knew Perkins pancakes were so pointy!!! But then I looked up the potato pancakes that some girls had, 810 calories for a serving! Mine were over 300 and that's before the butter and syrup. Opps. But they tasted good . Moving on to new everything. Have a few things to finish here before I head north. I'm actually getting excited now that I have stopped stressing myself out. It's sunny and nice today which will make for good driving. We had about 40 or so Trick or Treaters, mostly older kids, maybe 11-`15 but they were polite and I got rid of a lot of candy, just gave extras. Had 2 mini bars and dumped the rest in a big zip lock right after to take to the craft fair, or leave at sis house as they never get any kids on the farm. Guess I better get moving. I will try to check in tomorrow but will see what time we get moving and over to the sale. Have a great weekend all and a super new month. Today would be my Daddy's 101st birthday. Jan Murphy. Welcome back friend, let's do this! Hope you get a trip to the mountains today. Do you still have leaves on the trees? My goal today is to earn back some weeklies, stay in my points and of course, be AF. Amy. Funny about the kids seeing the Ring camera, but taking the candy anyway! Glad you got rid of it tho. Sounds like you had a busy day doing paperwork and clearing up some business. In my HSA they just move the money over when I get under a certain amount, I think it's like $200. Interesting that Fidelity makes you move your own. Hope the new meds work out, the lower price sounds good. I think we are going to give up on the shock warranty. Of course it's such a run around they know you will give up. They want the shock mailed to them, which means having someone take it off now, then can't drive the van until they send something back, we pay for shipping back and who knows if it could get done before it has to be in storage. For $160 shock we'll just buy a new one. And I told DH to write a negative review on their site when they ask for the feedback!!! Have fun with the kids tonight. Cindy. Hoping the new meds give you some relief or you can get some new opinions from another Dr. Hugs Cathy. Have fun in town and with your friends. Hope DH is home when you get back and all is well. Waving hi.

Hi girls! Happy November! How in the world are there only 2 months left of 2024? Looking back at our last challenge, I gained 4 pounds. Between seeing that, and trying on some clothes at the store yesterday, plus reading Cindyās awesome new challenge, I am ready to face all the temptations these next 2 months will bring! Iāve been doing well with my activity this week, as well as my eating. Iām going to a womenās function with our church tomorrow, but will do the best I can with the choices I have. Yesterday we dressed up before our water class. I was a Steelers fan with a jersey, foam finger, and a terrible towel. In the water we did the motions of our characters. It was fun! And I got more steps in and my activity actually counted as aerobic, which doesnāt always happen! Afterwards, I was able to swim the pool 4 times! When I first started trying, I couldnāt even make it once! Slow and steady makes all the difference! Just like WW! Last night was practice for the murder/mystery and we used our microphones. Mine had to be turned down! š I plan on making a list today and getting some things done! I probably wonāt post again until Monday. Enjoy your weekend and donāt let it become your weak end! Oh, and the only way Iāve ever used hatching in a sentence is Look, the eggs are hatching! š
Cindy: Thank you so much for this new challenge, in spite of not feeling good! Do you write them yourself? It was perfect, and I think I need to include it with my devotions every morning! I hope the new meds help. Which fall might have caused the concussion? I have a young friend that walked into a tree branch and one my age that just walked into a glass door that both have concussions. Nothing to fool with! Both were told to REST!
Jan: Have fun with your sis! I hope you sell everything! š
Amy: Thanks for all the info. Depending on how things go, I may be trying it next year. Time will tell. Also, thanks for being so open about DH. It helps.
Murphy: Yay for joining us again! I havenāt been drinking enough water lately either.
Liz: Sorry that Elyse has celiac, but Iām glad she has been following the diet! There are so many more choices out there now, as you know, than when my mom was first diagnosed.
Carole: Itās so exciting to think that you can move anywhere you want! DH and I have discussed it, but I wonāt leave my kids and really enjoy my life! If anything, we might spend a month away at some point. Weāll see.
Cathy: Enjoy your time with friends! Itās so cool that you harvest your own olives for olive oil!
Iām done. My goal is to stay off my iPad until tonight. Weāll see how that goes!

Hi friends! So happy itās Friday! Iāve gone twice to vote but the line was crazy. Maybe Iāll go when it opens on Tuesday. Itās sunny but cool out. Took the pups for a walk but was so tired we didnāt go far. I am focused to be BOT. Iām almost in the 160s again. Itās officially 3 months until Hyrox so my real training starts now.
Amy, thank you for telling me how you picked where youāre at. When we were looking in FL, we were content with a condo (thatās all we could afford) If we move somewhere else, Iād like a ranch house. Part of the reason we have to move is the property taxes. We pay almost $15,000 a year and they just keep going up. So we have to move, even if stay here.
Jan, work wasnāt bad the last 2 days! Good luck at your sale! Have fun with it! How is your sister doing?
Vicki, you sound determined!
Liz and Murphy, so happy to hear from you both!
Cindy, thank you for the new challenge! I hope the antibiotics work.
Cathy, I hope you had fun today.
