Hi!
Hot humid, ugh.
I volunteered today at MANNA today, where I volunteered before I went to school. Since then they had moved into a brand new building, a bit further away, but I can still easily get a bus a couple blocks from my house and it takes me to practically their front door. The new kitchen/prep area is huge, and can accomodate much more people. Met and talked to a lot of new people. Chopped about 50 lbs of onions, lol.
No exercise, was on my feet for hours.
Joan, great that your friend's DH can finally get a kidney! It sounds like you're really enjoying your meals.
Holly, I have my annual cardiologist check up tomorrow.
Also tomorrow, I'm taking my 4 nephews out for dinner tomorrow night! Summer is the only time they are all home together, 1 will be going to med school, another 2nd year in college, one is out of college, working and living at home for now, and the youngest in high school.

My scallion pancakes turned out great! I'm doing some experimenting with them, cooked some last night, had leftovers last night to see what would happen if I baked them tonight to crisp (turned out crispy tonight), and put some in freezer to see how it cooks from frozen.
The sauce that I made was amazing, I used pickling liquid I made for pickled cucumbers I did this weekend, along with soy sauce, sesame oil, hot pepper oil - the pickling liquid added more depth of flavor.

Sue and Holly- how did the cardiologist appts. go? DH had the cardiac catch yesterday fully expecting to have two stents. He badly failed the treadmill a couple of weeks ago. However the cath. was completely clear. We were totally surprised but happily so!
Joan- wonderful about your friend's DH getting the kidney. Living on dialysis is so constrictive!
I weighed tonight and up to 122! I have been walking 3 mi / day about 4 days/week and eating like crazy. Guess I can't do that. Also I weighed T night instead of in the a.m. as usual. Haven' t noticed any difference in my clothes though.

JoAne, you have not gained weight--we pick up about four pounds in water and food weight in tthe course of a day--never weigh at night---unless you do all the time ! LOL. Don't panic. Amazing you are 118--I weigh 20+ pound more than you--I guess I will never have the actual thin look--it just isn't me. But I feel good--I bumped up about 1 1/2 # this week but I think it is just that usual up and down that happens around a number for a while depending on your body's processes. Not feeling discouraged--just tracking.
Yes, Sue, I am trying to actually enjoy my food---looking forward to actual great meals is helping me not care about snacking--trying to follow Holly's philosophy of mindfulness. It is funny, yesterday while making dinner I realized I had not had an afternoon snack of any kind--so I got a few carrots out and munched on them while cooking--I eat a few every day for raw veggie fiber.
Last night I sauteed wild caught shrimp and made a veggie stir fry and a bit of brown rice---measured my rice so I could track it right---had 8 shrimp--for me shrimp is just like candy--I just love it. Sue, scallion pancakes sound so good--I love scallions so much---love making a fried egg sandwich just loaded with scallions in the egg--really the egg just helps deliver the scallions in one piece!
Sad about J McCain--sounds like the worst of worst cancers. I have read about brain cancer and it also has hideous results in the decline--unbelievable how big it was without his having had his health investigated. Wonder if he had been dealing with headaches.
Housecleaning today---cat sitter coming and I have to have directions written--which I have to start now--and nails and then we go out to dinner with two couples (BF;s and my yoga friend and her DH) and then go see Frankie Moreno at the aGolden Nugget downtown--he is supposed to have a great show. We dance to some of his music sometimes in our dance class.
DD flew to Florida last night---we are dog and cat sitting--dog is over here now--tanzi likes him as there were little together and spent quite a lot of time together then. Sidney attacked again today because DH screwed up and left out bedroom door open after he went in there just to shut it---OMG I am so frustrated with him for this--somehow he just does not seem to realize how big this problem is--it is not going away. I have to call the vet today and just dread having to tell her that he allowed this to happen as she has been so specific about what we are to do. Ugh!

Good Morning, Not walking today as my friend has a MD appt. Will walk tomorrow. Wt. was 120 this morning- whew! Not 118 but that is ok. 120 was actually my goal.
The deer are still active in my yard. After the Hydrangas now. Ate the flowers off of the hostas and finished off the 2 rose bushes that were coming back from their chomping. Obviously the peppermint is not working. Will have to try to get the fertilizer my friend recommended.
The glioma that McCain has is a relative of the retinoblastoma that my DH had to have his eye out for. It is a very bad, invasive tumor. Heard this morning that there is a new immune system treatment but it can only be tried after chemo and radiaton. Seems like a lot to have to go through.
Joan - I am amazed that you can keep the dog with your two cats! They must have been raised togethr at times. My cats would have never done with a dog around.
Don't think DDIL is bringing DGS over today since DH had the cath. this week. His leg is still quite sensitive and sore from the procedure.
Have almost finished my second summer top that I got the thread/yarn for. It's white and navy.
Joan - I guess one of the perks of living in Las Vagas is all of the great shows you can see (if you want to venture into the traffic)!

Oh, JoAnne,,, Babe the dog and Tanzi. Were around each other constantly as pup and kitten--and she loves dogs anyway--she always greets him with happy tail and nose kisses! Babe literally knows her name and DD can say, Do you want to go visit Tanzi and he runs to the door to get out to the car. Tanzi actually loved DS's dog the most--big black lab/spaniel combo--she would crawl under his ears and lay down. Funny, huh? Sidney has to get used to it and then he's okay but not very interested.
The Frankie Moreno show was probably best performer show I have ever seen---OMG it was just fabulous and he loves the audience--everyone in the theatre was up dancing the last third of the show in the aisles right at their seats--everywhere. It was so fun---he is just so talented---plays piano unbelievably well, harmonica just as well, guitar, uke, on and on--his musicians and three singers amazing too. The guy beside me has gone 23 times! People in front were at their 20th show. Young and old people there--all genre of music---he is going to be at the Kennedy Center and at Carnegie Hall as well within this year. We are going to go see him at the cabaret room at the Smith Center this fall---going to try to get a group together to go. There were six of us last night--had dinner at the Nugget and had made a reservation and they gave us the best table=---away from the noisy music--looking out over the pool and shark reef and it was just so nice. Lots of good conversation as the group mix was good---BF's and yoga BF and her DH.
Go on Gardeners' Supply on line and look for deer deterants JoAnne--I see stuff in their catalog often.
I have so many tomatoes now--thinking I will double my spaghetti sauce recipe and freeze some. Sue can you freeze fresh tomato spaghetti sauce okay?
Have to go out find tomatoes that are ready and then get ready for my dance and weights class, go to credit union for a bank statement and get my nails done. DSIL from CA is in town to visit his parents--might come spend some time with us tonight.

Hi all,
Cardiologist appt went ok. My BP was high as predicted, but I took my machine to show the record of readings I take, which to me are a more accurate reflection. He put me on a different medicine to see if that helps.
My weight was 107.4 at the office. I usually run around 111-113. That is unusual for this time of year when I normally gain a few pounds. It is weird to think that I weighed close to 130 10 years ago.
Joan, my parents' dogs don't pay any attention to the cat, which suits him fine. He's a strange cat. It's funny to see their different personalities.
JoJo, congrats on the weight. Sorry about the deer eating your plants. I hope you can find something that works.

Hi!
Had a great time with the nephews last night. Youngest nephew is going through a "phase" and did not want to come. He is not interested in food and hanging out with his brothers and me. Too bad, hope he gets out of this phase soon.
We ate a ton. So funny, the 3rd nephew has been working at a country club this summer, doing food service, and was schooling the 2nd nephew (who is very into food) on different wine glasses for white and red wines. 2nd nephew's girlfriend lives in NYC and her graduation dinner was restaurant of her place, it is a Japanese restaurant opened by the one of the sons of the famous chef in Jiro Dreams of Sushi. I had described to nephew months ago how to get a reservation at a restaurant that popular and he had his GF do exactly what I said to do, and they were able to get reservation on Saturday night at 7pm, the most popular time. So sweet, he said someday he would like to take me there.
Jojo, cardiologist appt went fine, BP good. I'm switching one of the meds though. One of the side effects is coughing and I'm finally just not wanting to deal with the coughing fits I sometimes get any more. Is this the first year you've had problems with deer? I don't remember you talking about this problem before.
Joan, have you had scallion pancakes before? It's pan fried and should be crispy, flaky but tender/chewy on the inside. It is addictive. Glad you enjoyed the show so much! Yes, you can defiinitely freeze tomato sauce, practically forever.
Holly, I'd love to be 107. Are you being more active?
Today I went back to school and talked to a couple of my old teachers. I'm leaning towards doing catering...

Joan - I will try that site. Thanks.
Holly and Sue - hope the new BP meds help. It was amazing with my son that diet and exercise got him off of the BP med. But his diet habits were so terrible before he mad the change.
Sue - I think we have always had trouble with deer. I remember them destroyiing my vegetable garden when I tried one. Often I have not realized the problem and put it to being a bad gardener. But I and neighbors have seen the deer and I find their tracks in my yard all the time now that I realize what they are. Also just having the yard landscaped and new plants put it makes me VERY aware!
Walking done today. VERY hot outside. Yesterday put fungiside on the lawn, blew the leaves off, and sprayed the weeds. Trying to kill much of the ivy everywhere - it is so invasive. I found a recipe for a home remedy - gal. of vinegar, 1 cup of salt, and 8 drops of dish detergent. Hope it works.

Hi all,
Killing time in the coffee shop while Charlotte gets a bath at the pet store.
Sue, when he was alive, my great uncle used to do something similar to what you do for your nephews. He introduced us to new types of foods and restaurants around New England. My brother was much more adventurous than I am when it comes to trying new things. I do the bike at least a few times a week. I also don't keep a lot of food in my house because it goes bad before I can get to it, which may also help.
Joan, do you have an Apple Watch? I see that it has some accessibility features that might be helpful for getting alerts when I don't have my CIs on. It'd be nice to not have to keep my phone near me at all times.
JoJo, today is supposed to be the hottest day of the summer so far here. It hasn't been nearly as bad as last summer though.

Hi everyone---Holly, DH has Apple Watch for that very reason----he absolutely loves it and says he no longer will ever be without it. He can even adjust his h. Aides on it. I do not wear a watch--would love the heart rate monitoring--keeps track of your exercise levels and sets goals for you, etc. but I just don't want to wear a watch and would be afraid I'd like it and then have to wear it all the time!
We are excited--going to see The BIg Sick at 4:30--yay.
New pet sitter came and spent about an hour---Tanzi not doing great but I got her lured into eating by opening up a can of tuna and making a soupy tuna-water dish for her. Maybe that will get her eating again--
DGD16 called me from NY today--she was heading over to pick up coffee at Grand Central Station and then walking to Bryant Park to sit under a tree and read and draw a while--she is by herself today as the other girls when on the field trip to Six Flags---she did that two years ago and knows it is just a hot long day plus I think she was sort of longing for a little self time.
Did the kickboxing class todaay but my fav teacher did not teach it--I guess half the month this other person does it (it was actually her class but her parents are in CA and are both sick so she goes away to help 2 weeks a month). I did not like it---not safe . She gave not precautionary cues, everything was fast to aerobic music instead of concentrating on form and repetition--sort of a mix of zumba, kickboxing and weights--I really kept it low impact for me--I watched a couple people who do well with Sue teaching and they had terrible form trying to keep up her pace and do it sort of dance-y instead of good stances like in boxing. I won't go on her weeks any more--I have no desire to do anything that could end up allowing me to injure my self--I thought it was so poorly taught. But A friend of mine loved it--however she is like Gumby--flexible to the point of nearly jointless so she was all over movement and liked that---as far as having a clue what it was doing to her body, there couldn't have been any!

Sue, teens go through phases of being so self centered---it is so nice when the kids make it through that phase and get back to being nice people consistently!
Holly, wow, you are some kind of tiny! That's really great as long as you are healthy--glad you could take you BP records in ---that is what I usually do as I get a bit of elevation from the whole white coat thing.
Interesting that both you and Sue are changing meds. I never have had a negative effect from mine---think I was on same as you, SUe.
We watched the best movie last night---it aired on May 29 I think---managed to find it through our Direct TV stuff that is kept on demand for a while---if you can find it you really should watch---JoAnne your husband would enjoy it too I think. Actually we watched it with Ed , our DSIL from CA--he came over to see us last night---heads back to CA today. It is made by Carl Reiner---If You're Not in the Orbits, Eat Breakfast. It is all about aging into the 90's like he, Mel Brooks, Betty White, Norman Lear and others---was so excellent. My teacher at gym told us about it. Everyone should watch that.
JoAnne, I think the exterminators trap got the rat that eating my tomatoes! No bites out of any the past three days!! Yay! Hope you can figure out your deer issue.
Neat affirmation of your nephews appreciation for you, Sue, that he would take the initiative to dine there. You have prepared him for the experience, too.
I think I missed Aimee's birthday on FB yesterday.

Hi!
It's been hot and humid here, but getting dark and cloudy now and we have thunderstrom warnings.
Not much going on today, usual food prep, chores, gym.
Last night the guy who organized SO's work in the office building gallery this past spring called and asked if he could stop by. He was visiting a gallery across the street from us. He brought a date - she's an artist so was interested in seeing SO's work. They ended up staying until almost 10pm. It was fun, she was nice - she looks like Reese Witherspoon. I told her so and she said she has gotten that comment before.
I cooked more scallion pancakes, from frozen, and instead of coating the pan with oil I brushed the pancakes with a little oil. It turned out really well, with nice browning on both sides of the pancake. I'm just trying to experiment with different ways to store/cook these.
Jojo, hope the home remedy works. I remember when we lived in the suburbs and had problems with deer, at one point I think SO used human hair.
Holly, yes I remember you telling stories of your great uncle. Does your family still keep in touch with his partner?
Joan, funny I used to wear a watch every single work day, as well as bracelet, necklace and now I only put them on when I go out to dinner or something social. Seems like Tanzi has been ill for a very long time.
Talk about aging into the 90s. One of my neighbor's mom passed away this week. She had been extremely forgetful lately from what my friend said, but I didn't think it would happen so fast! We're going to the funeral tomorrow.

Good monday afternoon, all! Did my early gym---love that body sculpt class and I think it is really toning my body more than any other. Went and bought more of my balsamic from the specialty oil store---OMG, it is just so good---came home and had a "picked this morning" large tomato caprese salad---it was to die for. Was thinking about it ever since I picked today---got another pound at least of tomatoes---a couple beauties that were hiding and were bright red and even the rat did not find them!
Planning to have grilled ahi tonight. Corn on cob for DH with a little Asian cabbage slaw under the tuna---my favorite combo. I am finding when I look forward to dinner knowing what it is, I do not crave junk food---sort of crave the actual dinner instead.
Going to DMV for 2:45 appt to renew dr license and get the real ID one--have all my paperwork gathered to do so---as a women it takes proving your name change and your address---our utility companies are so chauvinistic they still put out bill only in the husbands name if you are married---if I had lots of money I'd challenge that in court---DH has to give them verbal permission to talk to me about our utilities---how discriminatory is that! Luckily our credit card is in my name since I opened the account about 20 years ago so only needed one more--so went to the credit union and got a bank statement which also has both names---DH will just grab a couple utility bills and he is good to go--me, I have a folder full of crap--even have to have marriage certificate and has to be official one signed by witness.
Holly, I started watching the new Netflix Anne with an E--series---binge watched about four or five episodes while folding clothes and stuff yesterday. I rather like it even though I absolutely love all the old Anne from Avonlea movies.
Met a lady at the gym today who knows a hiking friend of mine from my old yoga class---she is carrying an 18 pound backpack everywhere with her for three months--she hikes 10 miles a day with it as well. In late september she will go to Europe and hike the pilgramage hike that the movie The Way is about---have you ever seen it--good movie about a dad who hikes the hike his son did before dying---anyway it will take her six weeks---her legs look so good, muscular and young---she is probably in her fifties--late I think.
Did I tell you we saw The Big Sick---OMG, what a great movie---I saw the main character who plays himself in the movie on Trevor Noah--he also is in Silicone Valley series which I don't watch but think I will now---he is so funny. He wrote the story of his finding his wife---try not to miss it---it's a win all the way around.

Joan - have heard that movie is good. Taking DGS10 tomorrow to see Guardians of the Galaxy. I ordered two sprays for the plants from the site you recommended (for the deer). One has capsacian and the other has garlic and a lot of other smelly things. An article on the site says that if the deer have just started coming around (not true for us) you can sometimes deter them but if not, nothing works for very long and sometimes not at all. The peppermint I used worked for a while. They recommend alternating products. They are ruining my hygrangras. My neighbors have a dog which seems to help. DH won't let me get a dog. So glad you were to get the vermin eating your tomatoes Joan!
Neighbor could not walk this a.m. so I cut the grass at 8:30a.m. So much easier to do it when it is not so hot.
Holly - I am doing two crochet projects at one time now. I find it is so much easier because I don't get as bored with it. I work for a while on one then on the other.
Walked this evening.
