We have many TJs around my area. No Aldi's anywhere near here.
I do shop at TJs periodically. I especially like the pre-cleaned, bagged produce—specifically string beans and Brussels sprouts.
Most of my shopping is done at Walmart Neighborhood Grocery or Super Walmart or, on the up side, Nob Hill (Ralph's). The quality of meat & produce at Safeway and Lucky is so poor, and the prices so high, and the service so bad, that I figure if I'm going to suffer a lack of service I might as well do it at Walmart and save some bucks.
The two Nob Hill markets are a fair distance from me. I'm excited that there is a new high-density housing/retail complex nearing completion and there will be a new Nob Hill there AND very nearby another new complex with a new TJs.
Oh...and we have several Whole Foods—otherwise now known as Whole Paycheck by Amazon—and the nickname says it all.

LOL zazzles, Whole foods has never really gotten my whole attention. DIL loves it, but then again, if something is for sale on one side of the street and full price on the other side of the street she will cross the street to pay full price.

Has anyone heard of Lidl? I have one opening up soon near me. I am hearing good things about it but don't know anyone who's actually been in one. Can't wait to try it. www.lidl.com/

We have a TJ in the same shopping plaza as the WW center is located. I go to my Saturday morning meeting and then shop at TJ. They have good meats, fresh produce, and well priced frozen foods. I bring a cooler bag, as it is 20-30 minutes from my home. There is an Aldi 10 miles from my house, but their offerings are inconsistent at best. I could never do my regular grocery shopping there. Produce is less expensive but not very good quality. At one time they carried a whole wheat gnocchi that was a SF product, but they haven't had it when I've been there lately. Not worth my time to go there anymore

The quarter for the cart thing is all over Germany at every store. I was thrilled to see it here, it really helps with the carts all over the place.

Can't wait to try it. www.lidl.com/I've been reading that Lidl is a German chain trying to break into the US market. It is a direct competitor to Aldi in Europe. The article I read said that it will be smaller than the typical US superstore and have a lot of house brand stuff. I get the impression that if you like Aldi, you will like Lidl.

I have way more TJ's near me than Aldi's. As far as I know, there's only a handful of Aldi's and I was not impressed with the one I went to. It was very junky, and kind of skeeved me out. It could have been just that location, but that's the only one I've been to so I can't compare.
For the most part, TJ's is excellent. The one near me has very good produce, although from what I hear that varies from store to store, too. The one thing I've found about TJ's is that every.single.one that I've been to has a crappy small parking lot.

Interesting poll. I would love a TJ. Nearest one is 50 miles away & that's not happening.
I am shocked, though, st the number of,people who have had issues with Aldi's. Our store is spotless, the buys on milk, cheese, produce, snacks can't be beat. If you're into canned goods, also great prices. Their chocolate is the best (& cheap) &a they have these spectacular cookies similar to Pepperidge Farm Milano 's at 1/2 the price. I am very happy to'put a refundable quarter in a shopping cart as it keeps the carts out of the parking lots & dinging your car.
They are both owned by the same German company (or at least they were).

Wow, a lot of ALDI lovers here. Some of my disappointments, aside from salads decomposing in the bags, was that they advertise having gluten free and organic products. I saw neither. In fact the store seemed to be mostly snacks, crackers, cookies, candy and a big aisle of cheap stuff in the center. Sigh - guess these stores are hit or miss, and ours is a dismal miss.

NatureLover, I was just at Aldi's the other day and they had a big section of gluten free snacks. Sounds like quality and appearance is location/management specific .

I grew up going to TJ all the time as a kid in So Cal. Then I moved to a small town in Mo, and when we finally got a TJ (just a few years ago) it is 75 miles north, so we don't really go there. We do have an Aldi, but don't shop there much. When I do go there I am always very pleased with their prices, and the produce is always very fresh. I also like to stock up on their cheap spices in big bottles. To me the two are not comparable. Our Aldi could fit on my property, TJ are always much bigger with larger fresh sections.

I was just reading an article about Lidl, and I'm not sure they a direct competitor with Aldi.
They describe themselves as a cross between TJ's and Harris Teeter.
I'm trying to remember if I was ever in a Lidl when we in Germany but I honestly can't remember.
None of the TJ's around here are bigger than our Aldi.
