So are those quilting stitches that barely show in the background stippling? I guess I need to look that up. I wouldn't do anything that intricate. I'm sure you would have to have a special machine for that or pay someone to quilt for you. I want to just do something simple. I have to show you this site. It's a crochet pattern for a really beautiful afgan or blanket and it's SO easy. You can use the yarn they say or baby yarn and of course any colors. It can be done in no time if you make it the size they tell you to make in the pattern instructions which I have to say is way too small except for a baby afgan and this is supposed to be for an adult. A friend and I both made one and made it 1 1/2 times bigger and it was still really small so I think you have to make it twice what they say...258 chains instead of 129. This is hte one I'mmaking for my dgs but I'm going to put the pillow thing on the top so that it can be folded and put into that to make a pillow. This is supposed to be a Lion Brand pattern but I wasn't able to find it on their site and I lost my copy so luckily I found it on JoAnnes.I'm making it in a dark royal blue...amost a navy and gray. demandware.edgesuite.net/aamm_prd/on/demandware.static/-/Sites-joann-project-catalog/default/dw27c29bfd/images/hi-res/project/pdf/PA00132.pdf

evening, welcome gail to our thread. got the decorations put away today. don helped alot. my sewing room is clean and everything put back into place---furniture wise. need to get my projects I was working on in order. that can happen as I go. one day I will be going through my sewing stuff.
first it will be the kitchen cabinets and drawers. I have a lot of those. then closets and drawers. the first cabinet will be the cookbooks. yes I HAVE RUHBARB RECIPES I CAN SAHRE.GLAD YOU LIKED YOUR LESSON RUTH.
RUTH I still think you should take at least one class at a quilt shop.that way you will be experecing quilting and hearing and getting more of a feel for it then just watching videos. there will be questions asked you may have never though of and get answers right away.I am not against the youtube lessons they are good. I have learned sometimes you have to watch them more then once. also you have to understand their lingo. I know when I was learning if I just watched videos I would have given up from videos if things didn't go right.it all boils down to how we understand things. don says I tend to be one who makes more work for myself. lol he is right.
how about starting with youtubes hotdog pillow? make a pillow case.it is fun. pretty easy once you get the hang of what they are doing.
my cable scarf is finally coming along. phyl.

Phyl, I might just do that in the spring. I don't like to schedule things for winter because there's such a good chance that I might have to miss some of the classes. I took a class back in 2003 or 2004. The instructor wasn't very good but I did learn a lot and it was fun.The only thing I didn't like was that not only do you have to pay for the class but then they pretty much insist that you buy the fabric there and it's always so expensive. She also sold me a piece of plastic film to put on my sewing machine to mark the 1/4" inch seam allowance and charged a crazy price for it. It was about an inch long and maybe 1/4 inch wide! I still have the fabric that was left over. At least she didn't insist that we buy the cutter and pad you cut on from her.Oh I do remember now that it was in 2003 because I had a grandchild due in early 2004 and wanted to make a baby quilt but she really didn't have any nice fabric for a baby. The most fun part of those classes was making the flying geese with the thingy she sold us. I didn't mind buying that from her. I doubt I could have got it anywhere else in town and online shopping wasn't really available then. But still and all, I'm going to take your advice and take a series of classes again and I'll also follow the advice to check Craftsy in the meantime and see how I do with that and I'll study youtube and tutorials to see what questions I need to ask when I get to the classes.
One nice thing I found when I was looking at that tutorial is that I already have the batting she mentioned. Got that by accident for something else.
As I was watching that I was reminded of a question I always wondered about...the star points come to the edge of the fabric so how do you sew the next piece of fabric on without ccovering up the star point?
PHyl, I sure would like to clean out and give away some of the things in my cupboards that I never, ever use. I have all kinds of serving dishes but I just use the same ones over and over. I'd give them to my dd but she doesn't have much cupboard space and now since all but two of her kids are grown she doesn't do all that much cooking and serving either. I guess I should just donate them.

Oh and Phyl, I'm glad to hear the cable scarf is coming along. I'd like to get to the one I got the pattern for at a local yarn shop that is no longer in existance. Making cables is so much fun. I shoujld maybe make another of those palindrome scarves. I have so many things on my list. I'd also like to make myself some thick slippers. I have Raynaud's and my toes get so cold and hurt and get tender spots. Maybe I should either take time out to do that or just buy thicker socks.
oh and hotdog pillow sounds interesting. I have to look that one up

Hello everyone. I have had little computer time this week as Devin is home from school. He goes back next Monday. I have also been reading a lot but have not done much knitting so I need to get myself more organized but I just don't feel like it.
Ruth, I like that afghan pattern. I would like to try it as a b/blanket. I will print the pattern out. I just need to put some paper in the copier.
Phyl, I will have to post my rhubarb marmalade recipe . I just need to remember to do it. I don't know whether rhubard grows in California. I do see it at the supermarket sometimes. It did grow in N. Irland and we used it for pies, jam and a sauce for desserts. I always liked it.
We really had wet weather for a couple of days but today we had sunshine. Yesterday I went out in the rain and had my hair cut today I stayed home.
Be good.

Good Morning!
Phyl- good to hear that you are getting that scarf done. I would love to see a rhubarb recipe or two. About the only thing I do with the rhubarb is strawberry/rhubarb pie.
Meg- yes, it's crazy having kids home from school! Hope that you are getting a little time to yourself, with Devin home. You will [probably miss him next week, but also be glad to see him go back to school. Hope your hair came out great!
Ruth- I checked out that very pretty big star quilt- it's lovely! If you are anywhere near a Joanns' they offer simple classes on quilting- I made a quilted pillow there about 7 years ago- learned a ton. And Joanns fabric is not quilt shop prices...so you do not need to rob a bank to afford it. I will check out that baby afghan later on.
I changed afghan patterns again- but am sticking with the one from the red heart site. The other one I used was from someone's blog, and she also seemed to be missing a step. THe red heart one seems much better, and I can tell will work out fine.
Happy Friday! Ginny

hi, ruth star points can be tricky. it is easy to cut the points off when trimming. some of the patterns use what is called paper piecing. I have taken a couple of classes In pp. I just don't do it enough to keep up with it and get good at it. that is another thing there are so many ways to do pp
I have made over 20 hot dog slips.. when I don't do it for awhile I have to go back and watch the video. Ruth if you are near Joann's you can get on their mailing list for coupons or do the phone app. you can also get their coupons by email. just sign up for them.
the house if cleaned except for vacuuming. don will do that after we get back from the chiropractor. my hips were really bugging me yesterday.
JOANN'SGIVE LESSON IN ALOT OF THINGS. YOU don't always hae to buy what they suggest unless it is really necessary for a class. phyl

Unfortunately there is no Joanne's here. There used to be years ago but it closed. It was nice because it was at the mall and you could do other shopping before and after. We also used to have a Hancock Fabric but you know what happened with them. I think they used to give classes. The only thing we have is Hobby Lobby and I heard that there are a couple new either quilt shops or expensive fabric stores unfortunately. I'll have to check on that. Meanwhile I still haven't checked on Craftsy so I think I'll go there now.
There's a goals and habits thread on over 60's and one of my goals to work on is getting my online patterns organized. My bookmarks are a mess and my download file is even worse with pictures and docs all mixed together.

Hello Crafters - Hope you are all doing well today
It's cold here today and we might get snow showers tomorrow. The snow from last night turned out to be nothing, which was fine with me
Ruth - I love your Tweety bird painting your name I'm glad you liked the video, check for others by Missouri Star Quilt Company, they do a lot of easy quilts. Thanks for the link to the afghan pattern, that looks like one that I, as a beginner, could do.
Ginny - It's nice to hear someone else that likes Shoofly pie. I ate half of it last night and it was O.K., but not the best I ever had there. So I don't think I'm going eat the rest of it, it's just not worth the points to me. I made some warm applesauce out of one of the Stayman apples this morning and it was good!
Phyl - Glad to hear you are getting some things done and have time to work on your afghan.
Here's my favorite video tutorial for making a pillowcase with no seams showing:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAomYjHzUQk Meg - Hope you are enjoying your book. I hope you've enjoyed the time with Devin.
Gail - Hope you are doing well and will check back in.
I'm trying to stick with my plans to have a "Finish it Friday" with my quilts and other projects. So today I pulled out a small wallhanging I did years ago. It's nine-patch Irish Chain using Green and White Shamrock fabrics. It also has alternating white blocks and I've wanted to applique shamrocks in the green fabric onto those blocks for year. So today I made a template of a shamrock and traced out the 10 I need and cut them out. I also wound my bobbin with green thread, so now I'm ready to applique them onto the quilt.
Take care everyone!

CJ,, I forgot today is Friday so I'm going to get my hats and get those end weaved in and also the ends and button of the shawl. I changed my plan for gds. For now I'm going to make him one of those crochet hats with a beard and make dgd's hat too then I'll have the birthday things made and if I still have time I'll work on the afgan.
On the afgan, that pattern I posted the link to, I made the mistake of using the dark color first and then I couldn't see where to put my stitches for the second row. I have a hard time with navy and dark blue and black. So I started over and used the gray for the first row. After the first couple rows it's much easier to work on the dark colors. I don't remember having that problem when I made the other two blankets using this pattern. One was a small one for dh and the other was a baby blanket and they went along great.
Another pattern I make is one my 90 year old friend gave me. It's two colors also and is all singe crochet. you make two rows of one color then two rows of another and make every other color a long stitch going down into second row before which takes your second color over the first. It's super easy. I thought it was complicated before I tried it but it's not at all. It does make a pretty heavy blanket if you use regular worsted weight yarn. For the baby one I used white and a nice multi color caron simply soft yarn. It was very beautiful when I finished by heavy so best used as something for the baby to lie on rather than to cover a baby with. If you used the same pattern and a lighter yarn I think it would be perfect so I may try that for my dgd that' having the baby in August.
And thank you all for the congrats on my upcoming dggb #3!

Hello everyone, It looks like we are getting ready for a wild weekend. Here it will be lots of rain and probably flooding depending on where you live. Other parts of the US are snowed in. So I hope you have lots of provisions on hand. Today I went to my Knit Wits Gp. so I did get some knitting done. One of the ladies was showing me a cap she was making with a cable stitch knit in a different way. I will have to have her show me how to do it next week.
Ginny, Devin is very little trouble. He is very good about keeping himself entertained. He is used to not having other kids around but it will be good for him to go back to school and spend time with his friends there. Also it frees me up to come and go as I please.
cj, sorry I didn't work on any UFOs today but it was my Knit Wits day. I hope you got a lot accomplished.
Ruth, That pattern sounds interesting and I am trying to figure out how to do it I like to try different patterns for my b/blankets.
Dinner is calling. I will check back later.

Good afternoon!!
Meg, glad you got to Knit WIts...that's what I love about groups like that, there is always someone there to teach you a new skill or pattern!! Are you in for rain and flooding too? Stay safe.....sure hope you will be comfortable!
Ruth, are you familiar with Hobby Lobby? We love them- I am not sure if they offer any classes (wish they did!). My local quilt shop (LQS) offers classes- lots of them are reasonable and give you the chance to make small projects and the total cost is around $25-35. You might also want to see if the American Sewing Guild runs any classes near you- there they take on all kinds of sewing projects, some of which include quilting. I totally agree, having a real person lesson - someone who can see what you are doing.....and help is a good thing. I love the sound of the pattern your friend gave you- super easy and just by changing where the hook goes gives you a different look.
CJ-love the sound of that shamrock design on your 9 patch!!! Good for you for sticking to it on finishing Friday's. Oh, I do have a an authentic shoo fly pie recipe- which is super good..... Let me know if you want it. (Then you are stuck with a whole pie!)
Ok, everyone can stop laughing now.....I ripped out the second row of the ripple (I missed a stitch) but am back on track. THis pattern does cover all the bases, and makes sense- I am sticking with it and cannot wait to see how it works out! It's snowing here and the trip I thought we were going make will probably not happen. It's a pretty snow.....do not think we are supposed to get much.
Gonna watch football with Bob. Have a wonderful day! Ginny

Hello everyone, I didn't sleep well last night so I got up really late today. I seem to have my sleeping hours mixed up. I am awake when I should be asleep and then I want to go to sleep about 5-6 a.m. The rain hasn't started yet but it is a very dull gloomy day and it looks like it could rain any time.
cj, I hope you were able to get all the ends woven into your hats. I don't mind weaving in ends and usually do it when I finish a project. Years ago I made 2 afghans for my DGD #1 and she used the afghans for a long time before I wove in the ends.
Phyl. I see you are busy as usual. I used to take classes but as there were so many people in the classes I didn't learn much. When we had Fabric Land here they gave free classes and I did take classes there and they had good instructors but they closed. I am blessed that there is a good selection of stores here like Michaels, Joann's and Hobby lobby and a couple more that are within easy reach. However when I want to learn something new knitting or crocheting I can find someone at my Knit Wits Gp. to help me.
Ginny, we had Hobby Lobby open here a couple of years ago. I have only been there a couple of times and it really is a wonderful store. I just don't go in that direction very often. and Michaels & Joann's are closer.
Ruth, I wish you lived a wee bit closer so you could help me with my crocheting. I am very much a beginner. I hope you are keeping warm indoors and that the snow is not too bad. Some of what I have seen on TV looks pretty bad at least for those out on the roads.
I hope all of you are safe at home this weekend. For me it depends on how bad the rain is. I don't want to be out in the car and get stuck in a flood area. Take care.

Hello Crafters - Hope you are all enjoying the weekend so far
We had a few inches of snow today, but it's very powdery, which is nice. I swept off the steps and sidewalk when I went out to get the mail, but the driveway and cars can wait and hopefully the snow will melt off.
I also starched and pressed some fabrics that I want to use in my next quilt. They are all sewing/quilt themed and I've had most of them for year. I only have 3 fat quarters, a long piece of another and then 2 yards of one, so I can't make too large of a quilt with them. I'm looking through my books and patterns to find something I like to use them for. I wanted to do the spool pattern (thought that would be cute with sewing fabrics ), so I might consider a row of spools and then a row of the fabric pieces so I don't have to cut them up.
Ginny - thanks for the offer of the pie recipe, I might take you up on it at some point. But like you said, right now I'd have a whole pie in the house and that could be dangerous for me
Meg - Hope the rain isn't too bad there, I've been watching the weather reports about it.
Ruth - Sounds like you have some great projects to work on.
Phyl - Hope you are doing well.
Take care everyone!
