Hi!
Everyone must be busy, and hopefully enjoying themselves!
Can't believe it's August already, this year is flying by.
Job fair was meh yesterday. This catering company I was moderately interested in caters a company that is only a few blocks from me - so that would be easy. I only want part time work.
Spent more time online looking at culinary positions.
Next week another catering company that I'm looking into has open call on Tues where I can go drop off resume and meet personnel, so I'll do that. This place is further away.
Yesterday I made what some call "moo shoo" pancakes, but are really Mandarin pancakes or what I call "bing" - usually used to wrap Beijing duck. I have a duck breast that I'm going to cook today. We'll have it for dinner. One of my favorite dishes.
Getting hot and humid again. Will go to the gym this afternoon, farmer's market in my neighborhood every Wed.
I've been watching Billions on Amazon video (free week), while on the treadmill. Pretty good.
Oh, Joan I remember when you said that you didn't like la la land. I was disappointed by the ending. It's supposed to be light hearted, musical with happy ending! Visually though I thought it was stunning, loved the colors and cinematography.

Good morning from Newport Beach,,, CA--has been a great week so far but sadly DSIL and I took DD to the airport this morning at LAX at 4 am--was an easy drive about 40 min @ way at that hour but I came back and crashed and just woke up---it is nearly 9 am!
The bigger house has been great--two boys are sleeping on blow up beds but just because they don't want to share a queen sized bed. We are in a quieter area so night time is nice--no late parties to keep you awake. Also having space for four cars has been so convenient.
The ocean has been too rough for me to get in---two hurricanes way off the coast have cause high waves and I could not see risking getting hurt trying to boogie board--did a little yesterday as it had calmed somewhat for about four hours---then later it got rough again. The kids and DH and DSIL don't care--they have been living in the water.
We have walked and biked to coffee or lunch (yesterday). I cooked two days and had brought lots of my tomatoes so made bruschetta twice and caprese salad twice---DD said it was the best she'd ever tasted--it was the tomatoes and my special balsamic and oil that make it really special.
Molly flew back to Sacramento on Tuesday afternoon but we enjoyed her being here for a while---we played some games at night which was fun. Jordan's being here has been so nice-----he just fits right in and is so considerate and helpful. Everyone loves him and calls him the favorite grandchild--lovingly, and he seems to like it--calls DH and me grandma and grandpa. He loves playing board games so always participates. DGS16 has done okay---a few times, a bit sarcastic--sort of like his dad--but then seems to give it up and be normal with us--he asked his mom to take him to a special cove to surf so they had some alone time and had a positive conversation--said he may move back home again eventually and did not get mad when DD explained again the difference between antidepressants and drugs--in fact he seemed to actually be interested in hearing the science--no preaching, just facts. He told her his dad gives him money to go get his own dinner every night--he skips lunch--no food in the house--he has always been very slender but is thinner--dad is seldom home--so basically, he is sharing a house. I think he has actually enjoyed being around the family this week. There is a pool table here and they have been playing a lot of that too--he surfs whenever we head to the beach and sometimes longer.

Sue, I hated the ending as well-----seemed improbable that if you had what they had you would never have kept in contact at all---sort of over. Dramatized at that point to me... I wondered why no posts on the other--realized to day that it is August! Still no Holly or JoAnne.
Took DD to airport this morning at 4 am---back by 6 and then I slept in so late! Lazy day here---one bike ride and then working on a puzzle---going to beach now. Water still really rough. Hard without the girls here for me---I love having DD around--she makes everything fun.
Sue, very hot here today---no AC in the beach house. Hoping for cool breeze tonight.

Hi all,
The semester is getting ready to start, so everyone is scrambling to finish preparations. This summer went way too fast. Back in May it seemed like we had all of this time.
I have slipped a little on exercise. Need to pick that back up again.
Sue, those pancakes sound really good.
Joan, glad the beach trip has gone well and DGS seems to be doing better.

Hi. Holly. Nice to hear from you----yes, time is sort of fickle. We come to the beach and by late Wednesday we are wearing down a bit from being on the go so thursday is often a lazy day and then Friday comes and we realize we are out in the morning and are upset that we took Thursday so casually as tho we had lots of time left!
The tribute to your brother looks amazing---did he produce a lot of art in his short lifetime? He must have made a big impact for so young a person.
DGD16's last day at Ailey today--they have tonight in the dorm still--DD is moving their luggage to Harlem to the row house bedroom they are renting for the week. She was so happy to see DD she slipped over to the Hotel and was there when she arrived--she ran and hugged her and cried---girls are so funny, one minute they are so disgusted with their moms and the next they cannot get enough of them!
Walked on the beach late afternoon yesterday--dinner was everyone on their own--some of us ate leftovers. No games last night---did work on the hard puzzle we are trying to finish before tonight.
DGS16 was a bit testy with his mom and Jordan last night as they walked back from the dinner she bought them. He was angry cause she would not let him drive since he is still smoking pot--claimed last time was night before we came. She is holding to the line that he has to be drug free to drive any of her vehicles and I am glad as she has not held the line with him before. He then started badgering her about drug use--defending it--OMG--he knows drugs backward and foreward--not a good sign--but has thoroughly convinced himself that it is the way to handle depression--then admitted that he drank beer in Canada with his dad, which we just knew would be happening. Who encourages their teen to do these things like a football buddy instead of like a son. DD is realizing that the mistake of staying in her marriage and having a codependent relationship with her X and then with her own kids has taken a huge toll. She is trying to change her way with DGS13 but even he has learned so much of the dad's behaviors that it is questionable whether or not it will have a turn around affect on him. He is surrounded by substance abuse when he is not with her. Sad.
I think Jordan may be astounded to hear DGS16's talk--he is so not into having to artificially enhance his life.

Hi!
Worked at food charity place again yesterday. OMG, someone did not take the probably 40 full sheet pans from the oven when they should have and the bottoms were burnt and the cheese on top overly cooked. So I spent about 3 hours taking the cheese off and scraping off the burnt pieces. They were then going to cut the chicken breasts up into small chunks and I guess use them for stews or soups. I worked with another guy and we kept eating some of the cheese, and giving it out to other volunteers. It was tasty, lol. Most of it went to the trash though, what a waste. It tasted like pizza without the crust.
Jojo, hope all goes well with the plan for your DH's health.
Joan, sounds like overall a great vacation. Although not perfect with some tension with DGS, but still better than it was before
Holly, yeah I can't believe school is going to start up again for you soon.
Today, just some errands, tried to fix our tv cable (on the phone with comcast - they will come out on Sunday), gym. We didn't have the duck the other day, doing it tonight instead.

This is a copy of JoAnn's post which showed up in July--like me she posted there and forgot we are already in a new month again--time flies!
JoANN says:
Good Morning. Walking done. One crocheted top finished. New edger here!
Can't remember if I told everyone the results of DH's card. appt. Dr. thinks that the spells that DH has had and his exercise tolerance may be related to him forming little clots and then passing them. He wants him to have echocardiagram in Dec. In the meantime we are to have our primary care appts. and will see about getting his med for depression adjusted. Had long discussion about the depression with the cardiologist. He agrees that he needs this re-evaluated and perhaps the med adjusted. He wants him to be on it for about a month then will prescribe an exercise program. I'm glad he has a plan now.
Joan you are so blessed to be able to get all your family together for a vacation every year. We have much less people in ours and just can't seem to get them all together. I think we are going to Savannah at Thanksgiving with DS's (oldest that lives near us) family.
Watching Perry Mason - one of my favorite old time shows!
Went to see Baby Driver day before last. Really enjoyed it! Liked the ending. To me a show that does not end well is not a good movie.
Finally got my hair cut - again, really short. So much easier to "fix" like this and I can just "let it go" on days that we are not going anywhere or doing anything.
My little 2 rose bushes in the front keep trying to come back and keep get eaten no matter what I put on them. The sprays seem to work on the other plants.
Weather here seems a little better. Not quite as hot.

Thank you Joan for copying my post!
Sue - they are so fortunate to have you volunteer and know how to salvage the food . Many people would have just thrown it away.
Talked to DDIL in Houston today. DS is already in Angola for his next month and DGD5 does not start school until the 23rd. She will be in kindergarten.
Went to the Tai/Mexican place at the outlet mall that we like after church today. Went by Gerharldali chocolate to buy my cAses that I keep stocked with for our nightly chocolate fix . We only eat the 86% chocolate.
Cut the grass today. Always feels good to get that done. Joan - what a great time you have had with the family. So wonderful that Jordan has blended in so well!
Yes, DH has had depression for years but I believe that it has worsened greatly in the last few. One of the causes for his inactivity and lack of enjoyment in everyday things.Hopefully this can be addressed.
The pepper spray seems to help with the deer but when there is any new growth, they eat it. Ate new flowers off my hostas. Just will have to be more careful to spray new growth.

Hi!
Last night we went to a pop up dinner by the woman I met last month who just opened up the fast casual restaurant. It was at the restaurant and the dish was traditional beef noodle soup. Her husband hand made the noodles- it was very good. I just went to support her and I wanted SO to meet her as well After the dinner we walked 18 blocks back to our house.
Comcast came today, and the technician was so nice. He fixed the problem - really just a matter of switching out the box, but he also spent the time to look at and fix another annoying thing that was on our other tv.
Yesterday SO's oldest and best friend emailed. He's coming to town Wed and wants to take us out to dinner. Of course, SO wants me to cook instead so now I'm trying to figure out what to do. I do have some things already in the freezer for instances like this. He's also spending the night, so SO has been busy clearing out the guest bedroom that has a TON of his paintings in there.
Jojo, oh, it was the chef who decided how to salvage the chicken. When I got there, another helper was already starting to take the cheese off. Can't believe DGD5 is going into kindergarten already.
Happy birthday Joan!!!!

Sue - you have gotten much better service from Comcast than I ever did. This is why we switched. It probably just depends on the the technician that you have the luck of the draw to receive. Glad that your problem is resolved and that the service was good!
Walking done. Later today than usual because of rain here.
Exciting that on the 21st of Aug. we will experience and eclipse of the sun here. I think you will only be able to see it up to S.C. Not sure how far West.
Wt. is stable between 119 and 121. I'm happy. I have noticed that I am not having back pain with walking since my wt. is down. Don't know if this is really related or not but could be.

Hi all,
The eclipse is supposed to be 99% here. We're really close to the South Carolina border. I need to find some glasses.
It was a fun weekend. We went to Asheville for the day yesterday and did a comedy bus tour. Good history of the town too.
Sue, yum, the noodles sound really good. My internet has been cutting in and out, which has been really annoying.
JoJo, so sorry about the plants.
Hope you had a great birthday, Joan.

So, Holly, DH got our glasses on Amazon--really cheap. We are set other than the drive. DS is concerned about the traffic the day before to all points along the actual path of the full eclipse so wants to drive to Idaho on Sat the 19--So we have to leave here the 18th as it is about a 7 hr drive to SLCity. We are tempted to fly but we would really rather take our car. JoAnne you can look up the actual path it takes completely across the US---The town we stay at is right under it so should be good.
Did my pilates and easy yoga this morning.
Cats not doing any better---DH forgot and left our bedroom door open and Sidney attacked Tanzi viciously--totally set back once again--was so frustrated with DH--why can he not take this to heart and watch what he is doing. Very confused--three times now he has screwed it up.
Get my haircut tomorrow by the same new gal--cannot wait--am looking a bit shaggy.
Cruise BF's sold their house in 3 days---went to a mini bidding war between 6 people--got $15,000 above the selling price. Now they will rent an apt. For six months before leaving permanently to their other place in Florida. Reason for staying--too many trips planne with no time to concentrate on the move. They travel all over constantly therefore we seldom see them any more except to take them to the airport and an occasional dinner. Have only one load of beach laundry left to do--some sheets and towels--and then done! Yay.
Holly, I have been watching the Anne with an E NEtflix take on Anne of Green Gables--I liked the first few episodes because I thought that having Anne have a few adjustment problems was realistic but now I am feeling like they turned it into a typical episode type feature with really stressful junk thrown into each episode--not sure I like that. Anne of Green Gables was always a favorite of mine because of it's having typical simple problems rather than high drama. I think I am a fairy tale person at heart!

Hi all,
Not much to report. We're busy preparing for the start of the school year.
Joan, yeah, it has a darker spin on it. My favorites are the movies with Megan Follows and Jonathan Crombie.
JoJo, congrats on the weight. I ordered a few knitting books from a site called Interweave that my coworker who crochets recommended. Also started a cowl.
