I emailed HL to see what they might have, and I did tell them what state you were in. Guess its also possible that each store does their own thing- so it might be a good idea to also check with the local store.
BBBS just picked up my donation. Guess I got rid of about 40% of the fabric I had, some of it I have had for 10 years and never used....so perhaps it can do some good for someone else. At least I feel I have a better handle on what I do have. Got all my Christmas fabrics in one tote now too- so that is a good thing.
Hi to CJ, Phyl, Meg and Ruth and all who stop in to visit. Have a good day Ginny

Hello Crafters - Hope you are all doing well today Meg - I hope you are continuing to feel better. I can't believe school is already starting for some kids. Ginny - I'm glad things went well for your husband's appointment. I'm sure it feels good to get your fabric cleared out and organized. Hope you get some time to work on your projects. Ruth - As always, you inspire me to just start doing something - I love to hear about all your projects and admire that you make things for others. Phyl - Hope you are feeling better and getting in some crafting. I haven't been doing anything, which is not good - I have a lot of things to do around the house and of course with all my craft projects. I sure hope I can get some motivation back soon. Take care everyone!

Thank you Ginny for sending that email. We'll see what they say. I agree that it's better to have someone use these things than to just have them sitting unused and in my case probably just thrown away when I die. When the people at BBBS said they could take only a little I wasn't clear on how much they would take and they didn't offer to pick it up so I might make up a medium size box to take there. I have a lot packed in plastic bags right now to donate to GW or wherever but I would definitely change to give it somewhere else if I knew who could use it.
I never did get any crafting in yesterday. Today I'll do more cleaning and organizing and then crafting later.
CJ, sometimes we're just not motivated to do much. Your motivation will come back though.
Meg, I'm glad you're continuing to get a little better each day.
Phyl, you are a busy woman. Have a great day

Good evening!
CJ- you just need a well deserved break to let your creative juices regenerate. I do believe we all need to take a break from time to time. Also most of us are inspired by fall colors and the winter holidays....everything is just so pretty then. You will probably get your momentum back when cooler weather sets in and fall colors beckon.
Ruth I got an email back fromHL indicating that they do not have drop boxes for donated hand crafted items. Guess that takes you back to crisis pregnancy centers, hospitals, women's crisis centers, rehabilitation facilities.... Call BBBS again and ask how much fabric they will take. Of my 3 boxes, I would say that one box was all fabric- I used the fabric (which was neat and folded) to cushion some household items so they would not break. So all 3 boxes had fabric in them but one box was mostly books, one household items, and the third fabric. Hey, do you have any idea how much yarn I would need to make a cabbage patch afghan? Not huge, but decent sized. I am thinking 4 skeins (approx 10 oz each) ought to do it. I am going up to get the yarn tomorrow..
Food store was a circus today (they are renovating it) so everything just took longer to accomplish. Busy day tomorrow as I am going to DMV to surrender some plates for a car, and then on to Joanns. In the pm Dd #2, DD#1 and I are taking the grandkids to the county fair. Should be a fun afternoon.
Meg, hope you are resting up and feeling stronger with every passing day.
Phyl- cannot hear what you have been up to.....you are always so busy.
Ginny

Ginny, yes there are certainly plenty of places for me to inquire about them receiving donated handcrafted items. I just haven't gotten around to contacting them yet but I'm already making the things because I know there is always a need. There is a place called TrueCare. I think they have places all over the country but women go there to determine if they are really pregnant. They do pregnancy tests and a sono to show the person that it's really a baby. They give the women a list of resources that would be of help and They also hold parenting classes. My dgd went to the class and they gave her a really nice crib! So I'm thinking that they may give out handcrafted items also. The nurse that is the resource coordinator worked at the hospital when I was still there. I doubt she would remember me.Long story on her. I think I already mentioned the three places here that house women and children that are homeless or abused. So there is no lack of places I just need to get in touch with them.
As for the amount of yarn needed, I'm not sure but I'll think about it and get back to you. Sounds like you have a mixed day tomorrow. motor vehicle dept = not fun but the rest of your day sounds good.
Well I never know actually how much yarn I need but I did look up a shell stitch baby blanket pattern which I think would use the same amount of yarn. The blanket is 35x35 and it says it takes about 1860 yards. When a pattern mentions the number of skeins to use and not yardage I always look up to see how many yards are on a skein of the yarn they used to find out how many total yards I need when I'm using a different yarn that they call for. Don't know what kind of yarn you're planning on using so I don't know how many skeins of that particular yard you would need to make 1860 yards but it seems to me that 4 skeins of almost any yarn would be enough. Some stores that sell expensive yarn have a policy that they will take back full skeins of yard that you have left over which enables people to buy a bunch of the same dye lot to make sure they have enough and not be stuck with excess expensive yarns.
Oh I didn't see that you said they were 10 oz each...4 of those should be more than enough

thanks Ruth, and I will take the1860 yards as a guideline with me to figure out how much to buy.. And 35 by 35 is about the size I would like to make.
I am pretty sure if you make a bunch of phone calls you will find someone to take hand made items. Best of luck with that. Ginny

hi, I am here. yesterday got home from sit and sew and my back started in. took Tylenol arthritis and iced it. will see dr.chad tomorrow afternoon. maybe I can get something done around here.
sit and sew did not go well. the little janome gold does not like to sew to thick of stuff.took me almost all day to try and get one cupcake done. did not get it done. I wanted to fluf fit up more. think two pieces of batting might be to much. for the cupcake part it is fine. but for the topping with 2 batting and two In the base is to much.
here is an idea. we have nurses here who got to the indian resveration in south dakota, to help them to learn to make quilts. ruth are there resverations around you who could use the things you made?
think it is pj time. phyl

Just a quick stop to say good night. I was not able to use the computer today because something was wrong with it. then when we got it fixed Devin took over. He is in bed now and goes back to school tomorrow. They get out of school early but I will have a few hours to myself. Devin was a bear today because he couldn't use the computer. I am still not crafting but I probably will start soon. Gradually I am feeling better so I will just have to keep doing what I am doing.
Hopefully I will be able to check in tomorrow. Good night sleep well.

Good afternoon!
Meg- its good to hear you mention that you are starting to feel better. Indeed, keep on doing what you are doing and get your strength back. I hope that you can get computer time when you want it. Enjoy some down time and his half day, meaning that perhaps you will get a few minutes to yourself. Hope you slept well.
Phyl-How is your back today and were you able to get an appointment with the doctor? Back pain is absolutely no fun- is this something you get from time to time that flares up? that also stinks that your small machine struggled to make it though all those layers. I well remember my mom telling me not to ever give up my old black singer because it would sew through anything. I guess the smaller travel sized machines have difficulty going through many thicknesses. But the larger ones are crazy heavy to travel with. I really hope you are feeling better today.
Ruth thanks for the input on the amount of yarn. I settled on 2 skeins of a lovely soft off white (antique white) which I hope will be stunning when worked up. Got it on sale- so it was a good deal.
Going to the fair with both Dd's and the grandkids. Have a great day-
Hi to CJ- hope she gets a chance to check in. Ginny

Meg, it's great to see you here. Taking care of a small boy cannot be easy even though Devin seems very well behaved.
Phyl, I second what Ginny said about your back. I hope it's better soon and you can see your doctor. I have back issues now and then probably from doing so much lifting of patients back when I was working. I hurt my back several times there.
Neighbors have their lawn people there getting the yard ready for company. It was very overcast and you could tell it had been raining when I got up. We don't get much rain normally but it seems like this year we've received more than usual. It's now getting sunny but today is supposed to be cool..high of maybe 75 or even less. People will be complaining about this summer because it hasn't been real hot every single day.
I think my antibiotic is working!! Wish they'd done the culture in the beginning of all this back in May. I took it for two days and starting yesterday no more pain.
I need to make a list of what I need to get done before MY company comes in Sept and get started. I got a couple things really already. i bought two new pillows for them to use. Egyptian cotton for pillows? Everyone uses pillow cases anyway so what's the purpose? But they are nice pillows. I already seem to have a house full of pillows but I like to get new ones for company
I started another pair of cabbage patch kids overalls last evening. Didn't get far on that. Ginny I hope the the two skeins are enough. I'll feel bad if you run out after telling you what that shell stitch pattern called for as far as yardage. Is it a yarn you can buy more of if needed? Antique white sounds really pretty. The one that I'm making for my new grandbaby is the Herrschner's Teddy bear yarn and I got the one that is mostly white. My ddil loves the yarn and the blanket I made using it for their last baby. She always thought the blankets made from "normal" yarns were too heavy. For the "little guy" I made the blanket in their blue. As I said, this one will be mostly white."little guy" is 2 1/2 now and tells everyone he's getting a baby brother for his birthday.

Hello Crafters - Hope you are all doing well today Meg - I hope you can get back to your crafting soon, sounds like you are starting to feel better. I hope Devin enjoyed his first day back at school. Ruth - I'm glad to hear you are feeling better after taking the antibiotic. I bet you are getting excited about your guests coming in September, what a nice gesture to get new pillows for them. Reading about your projects makes me want to pick up my crochet again Phyl - I hope your back is feeling better today and that you can see the doctor. Hope you can work out things on your project with your sewing machine. Ginny - I hope you have a wonderful time at the fair today, I bet the kids really enjoy it. Hope the weather is nice for being outside. Also hope you got all your errands done in the morning. I'm doing well today, did a little bit of cleaning around the house - but there is still a lot to do I'm giving myself a break from worrying that I'm not working on any crafting projects. I know I'll get the motivation again at some point, and I'll just enjoy it when I do. Take care everyone!

Helo Ginny, cj, Phyl & Ruth.
The weather has been very nice here in thelow to mid 90s. Beats the 100+ days.
I haven't done any crafting so far but I know I will soon. I have been reading. I was given an air machine to wear at night and I am having problems with it. I don't think I need it. but I will keep trying before I send it back. My DS has one but he doesn't use it. I guess some people like them and others not.
Ginny, I hope you enjoy the Fair today with the kids. Our Fair has ended and of course I didn't go. Devin went and came home with 2 stuffed animals. Good for you getting rid of all the fabric that you don't need and is taking up space.
cj, I know you will get back to quilting probably when the weather feels a bit more like fall. In the mean time enjoy what you are doing and don't feel guilty because you are not sewing.
Ruth, I will check out the web site for the cabbage patch stitch. I am thinking it is probably a crochet stitch. Something new to learn. I hope you are feeling better.
Hi Phyl, I hope your back is feeling better though as our bones change along comes the pain. I take medication for my back pain when I go to bed so that I can sleep. A lot of my problem is my lower back and there is not a lot they can do about it. Anyway I do hope you can get some help and be pain free.
Devin will be home from school soon.
Have a good afternoon and evening.

hi, yes the back is some better. just got home form dr.chad. he worked me over. I will be icing it later. back In 65 we took mom and dad to California to see mom's brother. before we left Nebraska das was warned to be careful on the hwy between indego and Blyth. not sure of the I name of the town anymore. well a semi stopped, then a mustang, then us the kid In back of us. we all got rear ended because of a Mexican driving drunk and no licsense. the kid In back of us and dads car got the worse of it. mom and I got whipped lashed. the guy in front of us lucked out. he just got out of the hospital from a accident four months earlier. he said there were some teens ahead of the semi who didn't know where to turn off the hwy. the semi had to stop fast.. ever since then there have been problems and it seems to hurt more the older I GET. like ruth I lifted being a nurse aid In hospitals and nursing homes. then add degeneration and good ole arthur living in my body. that's my story.
I did work a little on the ripple blanket today(chevron)
hope I sleep tonight.for some reason was awake a lot last night. was up at 4.30 knitting. yep knitting. did get a little over an hour nap this am.
meg glad you are feeling better. phyl

CJ ;and Meg, it's good to see you both. CJ don't feel guilty about now crafting. If we force ourselves to do something like that it's not fun and so why do it. As you said, you'll get back the motivation to do more in the way of crafting soon enough.
Meg, yes the cabbage patch stitch is a crochet stitch but I'd bet it would be a real challenge for you because of your eyesight. It's sometimes hard to find the skipped stitch you need to go back into to complete the stitch. As for the machine they gave you for at night I'd bet it's a Cpap. They tried to give my dh one but he declined. Some people really need them and you may be one of those. You can call the company to come out and help with the problems you're having. Sometimes though the doctors do get carried away with ordering them and prescribe them, I'm sure, for many people that really don't need them at all. Seems like it's one of those "trendy" things that a lot of people like to say that they use.As I said though, for many people it's really a necessity in order that your cells get enough oxygen esp the cells of the brain and heart.
Hey Ginny, in talking about donating things I remembered that I keep forgetting to tell you that I saw a story online where a woman who is a school bus driver made a crocheted item...mostly a toy type thing...for each child on her bus that wanted one. That was such a nice thing for her to do and it reminded me of when you made the gifts for the little girl that was leaving your bus route. I think that all of us on here either donates or has donated in the past to charities or others we thought could just use a special thought and gift so the other day someone said something about me donating and I just wanted to remind everyone that I'm not the only one.
