Short and sweet goddesses is a thread especially for us "Short n' Petite Gals". As "Short n' Petites", we have our own issues. Our goals are lower, and as we all know, a 5-pound loss or gain can make a huge difference on a Short n' Petite. We are here to support and encourage one another, so please feel free to join us!

Hi all,
I can't believe it is September already. Each year flies by faster and faster. Since we get holidays like Fall Break off, we don't get Labor Day. I just joined a local charity organization so I am saving my vacation for events related to that.
Valerie seems to be really enjoying living in Maine. That's good. When I went right after grad school, it rained most of the time, so I hope to go back one day.

Hi!
Rainy day here. It has been unseasonably cool here for most of the summer. Not much going on, food prep, household stuff, gym.
Holly, what does your charity do?
I see that Jojo and Joan posted on Aug thread, I'll copy and post them here and let them know about the Sept thread.

from Jojo -
Danny,my DS, left Angola is is to arrive Houston Sunday morning. I have not been able to talk to DDIL since Tue. I do know they got to the house on Thursday and began sifting things out. All new furniture trashed, also new sound system, son's car, books , applets rugs. I haven't found out anything about their new Appliances. Of course all of the new floors will have to come up. DDIL and DGD are still sleeping at her brothers but evidently at their own house all during the day working. I'm sure her parents are helping. I feel so helpless - strange not talking to them for a while. DDIL is just overwhelmed and says she cannot talk about it right now.
Rain here early today but cleared up and was warm enough to dry it all out so that I could cut the grass this afternoon.
Joan- so heart breaking about your grandson. At least he is communicating with the family and no longer isolating himself.
DH went to a movie this afternoon but I was doing the yard work and knew I would be too tired. So just made myself some tuna salad for dinner as a quick and easy.
Tomorrow will help DS with the kids. DDIL is in Arizona visiting her brother who is recovering from a big surgery about 2 mo. Ago.

from Joan -
Oh, how awful, JoAnne. I have been wondering--Cruise BF's have friends in Houston--their house was flooded half way up the walls---they are there daily---have torn off al the wall board about five feet up throughout trying to prevent mold developing. Of course, same destruction--everything on bottom floor totally ruined. I just cannot even imagine! And some of the pictures showed water way up to the rooftops--it is so terrible.
Now this new storm--I hope it doesn't make landfall!
I too worked outside---finally woke up to 78 degrees yesterday so I was out before breakfast and attacked the front yard--trimmed jasmine, pony tail ferns, cleaned out dead leaves, pruned half the mesquite tree and cut it all up before garbage came at 9--then ate breakfast and went to the gym. After gym and lunch went back out (by now it is in 90's) and used my electric hedge trimmer to trim the multi trunk palm, the TX sages, some other shrubs and the boxwood---then picked it all up so DH could bag it and suck up the smaller pieces with the blower thing. It looks so much better that this morning I just stood out there enjoying the smug feeling of having it nice again---love that stuff so much more than housework! Way more satisfying!
We had Cruise BF's over for dinner---they are in their six month apt. Now and were not unpacked for cooking yet. Served Chicken curry lettuce wraps, a cup of chicken noodle soup I had made, and a watermelon arugula quinoa salad. Peaches and yogurt for dessert. I decided I will make the lettuce wraps for book club in Sept. They are a cold lettuce wrap--really yummy.
Now my allergies are beyond crazy--finally gave in and took a Zyrtec=-have not taken one in two years since being on Flonase- but that couldn't slow this down at all--way too much pollen and dust yesterday I guess. Hope I don't get super sleepy as we are going to BF's to play cards tonight.

Thanks Sue--did not even think about it being a new month. The first was DGD17's 17th birthday--that is so hard to believe!
Heading to bed--breakfast out with cruise BF's in the morning at 8 so will get up early for coffee and reading and what not.

Hope everyone is having a good holiday, I know Holly has to work. Very nice and sunny here. I have had a lazy day, just some food prep and gym.
Jojo, has your son been able to figure out the full extent of damage? Do they have to tear down drywall?
Joan, sounds like you did a lot of yard work the other day. Haha, I don't like yard work or house work.
I made another batch of scallion pancakes last week and tested out freezing 1/2 the dough. Yesterday I rolled them out and cooked a portion for me and SO, and it was just as good as ones never frozen. I put the rolled out pancakes back into the freezer to test that out.
Oh, last night I had a sweet attack, ate some chocolate squares. At least I didn't snack on carbs

Sue, I would Like the recipe for the scallion pancakes. BF made scallion quiche for dinner on Saturday and it was so good. I made zuchinni brownies for dessert last night--DGS13 loved them as did DD---they are really tasty.
So today I got out at 7:30 and worked until 10:30 finishing up the pruning on the big mesquite tree. DH came out after a few minutes and actually got a tree saw and asked what all I wanted cut that was too big for my pruners--and he got a ten foot ladder---wow we cut a ton and then cut all branches up into 2 ft length for the garbage can. I am really psyched as I have not become sore at all--my hands are okay--have been using my hockey puck hand exerciser pretty regularly and it seems to make a huge difference as I do not feel the arthritic pain I usually do after that kind of work. I sweat like crazy tho as it was slightly cloudy so kind of humid for here--about 28 to 30 % which sounds low but remember we are often at 6 to 10 %. It started in the high 70's but pretty soon was about 85--the cloud cover helped a lot until the last hour. There is one alternate trunk/branch that must come off to balance out the tree and make it a higher canopy tree than our neighbor's tree which is not quite as tall so then the tree would grow completely straight--so DH said he will saw it for me--will take a lot because this is a branch that has wound itself a bit and should have come off years ago-=-that will be aa big job to chop up as it is a hefty branch.
Sharyl may end up having to leave her house in MT for evacuation if the MT fires get much closer--this morning were only 7 miles away--but just two days ago that was like 20+ miles away--Montana is burning up---they had bark beetle infestation that went way up into Canada as well and now with the high heat (90's instead of the norm which would be early fall like almost) everything is tinder and is burning out of control. The bad part for Libbby, MT is that there is only one main road going through it--not a lot of choices for getting away and as Sharyl said when I asked--where does one go when everything is burning.
Going over the cruise BF's for dinner in their newly rented apt. Am taking a salad so have to get busy and make the dressing--arugula with b. Squash chunks and quinoa and red onion and a bit of cranberries.

Hi all,
I have a sinus infection, so I stayed home today. I think the infection has been around awhile, but masked by what I thought were allergies and jaw pain. I went to urgent care yesterday and got an antibiotic. Been watching Netflix and knitting all day.
I enjoy yard work. It makes me feel like I've accomplished something.

Holly, I hope you feel better tomorrow----sinus infections suck for sure! My allergies are bad from my yardwork but took a mucinex last night that seemed to help--was a bit better today as a result. Hope you feel well enough to go to work tomorrow.

Omg, now Hurricane IRma--bigger than Harvey--tried to call SW airlines today and they are slammed with helping with those who will be affected by Irma and request that all other calls be delayed---evidently people trying to get out of harm's way before the hit!

Holly- ugh! since infection! Hope you are better soon! Get a lot of knitting done while recovering.
Saw Sheryl' posts about the fires. Tragedy everywhere.
DS posted pictures of the house yesterday. . Completely gutted . Floors up , dry wall down, nothing but studs. Said they had help from chevron co-workers, DGD's school and their church, friends, and strangers. Amazing how fast they got it done. All furniture is gone as well as all appliances. Don't know how or when they will be able to rebuild. I imagine getting anyone to do the work will be difficult.
Beautiful weather here today but raining and thundering tonight.
Had the kids and DS over yesterday to cookout. DDDIL is visiting brother in Arizona.
Praying for al in the path of Irma and hoping we do not get much of it's wrath on the East coast,
Wt. staying at 120

Ugh----how awful to see your house just gutted--yet there is no way to save any of it if it molds and I cannot imagine anything drying out very fast in Houston! I was in Steinmart yesterday and the clerk told me they lost 15 stores in Houston. I feel saddest though for the poor who probably lost what little they had and may never be able to have anything again. I know a family here who fled NOrleans after flooding out and losing all in Katrina---they want to go back so badly but their house here is still "underwater" in a financial way and because of losing and walking away from so much they cannot afford to do so again. She is a teacher and yet they are not financially fully recovered from their loss--that is the reality of all this--for the survivors it is years to get back on your feet fully!
This next storm is even more horrendous it sounds like---and now I see there is another behind it--I hope none of you feel the hit of this one! My cruise Bf's are going back to Florida on THusday--I'd be scared to.
Made sesame crusted ahi tuna tonight and sliced mine over arugula--the dressing was wonderful--a soy, honey, balsamic ginger vinaigrette. I seared it stovetop this time and it was so so good. I do Dh's a little less rare but love mine rare. So happy I learned how to cook it!

Joan - that tuna sounds wonderful! I have never cooked tuna. I guess you bake it. How Long! the glaZe would make it I'm sure. Will have to look at trying it.
Yes, the house made me sad. Only studs standing. They have rented an apt (2 bedroom_) a couple of miles from the house. It is in the complex where DS lived before married. DGD's school reopens next Wed. DDIL does not have to go to work this week; so some time to get straightened out. DS will have to go back to Angola in 3 weeks even though was delayed getting home. Wish he could stay longer. DDIL called last night. Is ordering DGD a full bed so that if/when we visit we will have somewhere to sleep. Yes, recovery will be a long time affair. We all feel so blessed that they are all physically ok and have some means to recover. As you say, many do not. Wish I could help though. I just bought some sandless sandbag for myself - hope I get them by the storm. Need to load up all my flowers and patio furniture and put it in the garage. Not so afraid of the flooding here but the wind with all our trees can be so dangerous.
I really don't need anymore clothes but just bought 2 pair of cords - grey and a wine .
Ugley here today - no sun!
I will send a donation to DS's church. They(the members if the church) and DGD's school were so great to come in a help with the kids house. Just amazing how everyone helped out with the house!
