Hi!
Volunteered today in the morning, then gym in the afternoon.
Joan, when we designed buildings we would always have wind tunnel testing done, especially for high rises. Glad your DS is doing so well.
Hope Jojo is ok and hasn't experienced too much damage
Thankfully Irma caused less harm than initially thought. My friend that I went to the museum with last week has a son in college in Tampa, and that morning we went she was late because of trying to help him figure out whether to take a flight out.

Everyone must be super busy. I am sitting here ready for bookclub and wondering whether I am getting more efficient, chose the right stuff to make, or am totally forgetting something really important! I have been reading nonstop---actually ended up loving the book---it is such an all encompassing book---really, while it is an epic story of two families whose early ancestors came to AM as indentured servants, it really is more an epic story about the "organism" known as the forest. I learned so much---and found out today that Annie Proulx is. 80!!! Awesome late in life accomplishment! It is 795 pages---spans three centuries and five continents. I am sad that BF did not like it---I am going to recommend her brother read it---I think he would love it---he is in Canada--BC--where the forestry history would be so personal for him.
I even had a massage today---had some really knotted stuff on the inside and back of my legs. Wonder if it because I started walking again and did not stretch enough each time.

Hi!
Hope everyone is ok, haven't heard much from Jojo and Holly since around Irma time.
Thursday I volunteered again. I really like volunteering. Looks like the catering job will not start yet, it depends on how many events they have and it is seasonal...fall and winter with the holidays, etc is busy time for them. He wanted me to work 10 hours today from noon to 10 pm and I said I wasn't available. I really did not want my first day there to be that long a period of time, I don't think I can take it!
I've been keeping up with the gym almost every day, walking 5-6 miles each time. My weight is not going down at all. Jojo and Joan, I think I'm picking up the weight that you guys lost!
Joan, how was your book club night? What did you make for it?
Not much going on, food prep, gym, some errands.

Hi Sue--yes, wondering what happened to JoAnne--occasionally Holly and I TM through FB so am going to contact her that way today and see if all is well.
I served the chicken curry lettuce wraps and watermelon, arugula, feta salad with quinoa and almonds---a light vinaigrette with rice wine vinegar base. I have had the leftovers last night and again today for lunch--the lettuce wraps with red grapes rather than cranberries are way more healthful calorie wise and I love them! My co hostess brought homemade dinner roles and some strawberries to go with the zuchinni brownies. It was a pretty lite meal other than the brownie---went over really well.
Can't blame you for not wanting to start with a ten hour day!
Sue, you may not be eating enough---most days I shoot for 1200 calories but I notice if I do a 1500 cal day here and there in the week I end up doing better---I am still tracking on My Fitness Pal. Now I have added in a morning walk daily so am upping my calories to 1300 to 1400---yesterday I did two walks and got almost 11,000 steps in just with the two walks so that was good.
DD is in Maryland accompanying her boyfriend to his reunion---just for the weekend. OMG, DGS13 was supposed to be with SOBX/dad. Last night when we walked the dog back to his house, I could tell he had been there---called him--he was at the park with friends shooting hoops---asked him to text me when he came home and it needed to be when it got dark and when was he going to his dad's---he said his dad called him and claimed to still be at work and was going to a "movie" with his new gf--said he'd pick him up after---that angered me--that would be around 9:30---but I simply told him I wanted a text the minute his dad picked him up---so he got home from park at 8:20 and texted me--didn't hear again so at 9:50 I texted and asked where he was--was still at home no word from his dad. Asked him if he wanted to come stay with us and he jumped at chance---picked him up at 10 and turned out he had had no dinner cause thought he'd be eating late with dad---so I fed him--he was really hungry--and tired--he never heard from his dad or his brother---so this morning after my early walk he was up and he and I had a hearty breakfast---he said his dad texted him at 4 am. "OK, text me when ready for breakfast". Well, he didn't --he doesn't even want to see him--he knows he wasn't at a movie--said his speech was slurred when he talked to his dad originally--said he thought he was probably drunk. Honestly, this man is such a wretch---I cannot stand to think of him---So DGS is visiting his friends Garrett at his house now and he and Garrett will come here tonight and play cards. He will stay here. What a sad, sad world this is when parents really don't care to spend time with their kids and choose booze and girls over them even after not having seen their kid in some time.

I am pretty tired----did my walk and gym and got up at 6 after going to bed pretty late last night---sort of hitting the wall here. JUst prepping some butternut squash for the week--peeled and cubed and now roasting and plan to make some roasted roma tomatoes with onion and carrots---but forgot to buy carrots and have none so must make a store run---darn.
Hope you have a good weekend, Sue.

Sorry I haven't posted lately since the storm. We weathered it well. Many trees down and damage in other areas but our neighbor hood did great. No power outage and just a lot of debrae to pick up. Spent a couple of days cleaning the yard and then another mowing it. I want to power wash everything before I return all of the things to the patios and porches. Thursday night we went to a production at our little theater here about a Caribbean island love story - it was a musical and really good. Sat. Night we went to dinner with a neighbor couple who grew up in Mexico and moved here 30 yrs. ago when they got married. They wanted us to go to a place that is authentic Mexican. It was quite good.
My son and his family in Houston moved in their apt. It is small but they are comfortable. The mattress they ordered for the bed they bought for themselves did not come yet though. They expect it the end of next week . DGD 's bed and mattress are there though. The couch they ordered won't be there until 6 weeks. The only furniture salvaged was bar stools, curio cabinet, table in entrance hall, and small bar shelves. All the tables and shelves were glass and metal, and the bar stools were metal. DGD seems to be ok and maintaining some normal envy since back in school. They have lost many students at her school because a lot of people just have picked up and moved.
Hope all of you are well and happy!
Sue so sorry about the job- how disappointing! Do you think they will keep you in mind for the future. I'm sure the weekends Is the busiest time for the catering business but understandable that you don't want weekends!

Hi, JoAnne. Glad you had no actual damage to your house--also glad you son and family are settling into their temp housing ok. So many lives so torn apart with the flooding so many places. It is really unimaginable unless you actually live through it , I think.
One of my former classmates from el school and h school posted yesterday that she lost her daughter due to a brain aneurism--OMG she lost her husband about 6 years ago and her oldest daughter about 8 years ago--how does one endure that amount of loss? She has one daughter left and a few grandchildren.
DD is in Maryland with her boyfriend for his hs reunion. DGS was supposed to stay with his dad which he did Thursday night. I am feeding animals and keeping dog during the day. Friday night at 7 DH and I walked the dog home--noticed that DGS's things were in the house--called him and asked where he was--at the park- Why--because his dad was working late and then going to a movie and would pick him up after---I was concerned--told him he had to get home with the hour, text me, then text me when his dad picked him up. He did go home soon after as it ws getting dark--but no text further by 9:50--so called--dad had not called or made contact at all. I asked him if he wanted to spend the night and he said yes--picked him up--his dad, SOBX, did not answer his text saying he was going with me until 4 am--and then said "ok, text me when you want breakfast." DGS13 was so down--so disappointed in a dad who does not care enough to spend time with him when he actually could uninterrupted---the next day the dad did not try to contact him till much later and then did not ask to come get him or do anything---just said, "just checking in on you." So DGS and I have spent the weekend together---Yesterday he was at a friends for a while and then he and dh and I played cards after dinner. Today we went shopping a bit, walked the dog, made dinner together and then walked the dog home and walked back. He did some homework and some reading. I will take him to school tomorrow and mom is home tomorrow afternoon. His father has money to burn and is just a lousy human being.

Oh Joan, so sad and pathetic that your previous SIL is so irresponsible and uncaring. Wonderful though that your DGS know that he can depend on you and feels comfortable doing it. You are obviously a rock for him! So sorry to hear the sad and tragic news of your friend's loss!
I spent all day yesterday outside with the power washer cleaning the front porch and the the fron sidewalk. Today will start the deck and the patio. It is really time consuming but looks so good where I have done it. Need to get an estimate on painting the porch and deck. I thought about attempting it myself but have now talked myself out of it. I would have to have a ladder for the end of the front porch on the outside and for all of the deck on the outside. - too dangerous!

JoAnne--so glad the voice of reason won out and you will hire out the painting! At our age doing things like that is as stupid as young people free climbing in Yosemite! Just daring fate. Not at all worth it.
I am reading a new book--new to me I mean---Being Mortal---oh my, it is excellent. I think I am going to buy a copy for each of my kids and plead with them to read it---I do not want to die in a nursing home surrounded by strangers like so many do--it really is about how so in denial we are about death in our country and how it affects aging and the dying process. Sounds depressing? well, that is the author's point--it is about knowing the process well enough to know what to insist on in terms of honestly from the doctors who are also in denial--they think of themselves as fixing and there is a point where fixing is way more inhumane that allowing the natural process to happen with advice and assistance to make it as positive as possible.
Jordan told me he is feeling "homesick" so this Friday I am having him to dinner and have invited his girlfriend as well--her name if Felecia--we are going to have DD and DGS13 also and play our Marble Pursuit game after which we taught Jordan at the beach. Felecia said she would like to learn it as well--should be fun. Am going to grill steak as I know he loves it. His birthday is the 28th so in a way it can be his b'day dinner.
Sunday night I had only 2 hours of sleep--insomnia night! So yesterday was gym, rest, nails, rest, dinner at Panera's, and go to bed--I was so tired! Feel great today--headed to Pilates and yoga.

Hi all,
Things have been ok. My BP is back up again, so I'm on a different medicine to see if that will help. I really wish I could find the source of this issue. I think part of it is stress and chronic pain in my jaw and neck/shoulder. My teeth process will be finished in a few weeks, so hopefully that will take care of the jaw pain.
Joan, Being Mortal is really good. I read it a few months ago.
Sue, glad you're enjoying the volunteering. I hope the catering schedule works out.
JoJo, it is gratifying to see the results.

Holly, good to see you back on---I guess I didn't realize that you were still having your teeth worked on---did you tell me they were replacing crowns on your implants---I remember your saying that you were starting that process but I guess I didn't know how extensive it was. Just having lots of work on your jaw and teeth can be so stressful---do you do massage? I wonder if a good theraputic masseuse would be able to help you relax the upper back and neck and jaw area?
We are being dumped by our doctor--he joined one of those. Big practices that love HMO's and they are dumping 9400 patients unless you are willing to drop your present supplemental and get an HMO as a primary--we will not--hate HMO's where you wait forever for referrals and have no way to get a certain dr. And keep it. So we are shopping--put a thing out to all my former teachers and on FB for recommendations. I get one more appt on Nov 6 and then we are out. I'll get my mail order scripts renewed then and a blood test so will have only three months to find someone else. I hate that insurance companies can hold you hostage this way.
Sue does the catering co just call you when they have a job?

Hi!
Nice day here, it had been cloudy and rainy this week. A condo neighbor dropped by this morning to talk about food for a party she's giving for a "think tank" group that she and her husband are a part of. She just wanted to go over the menu that is being suggested by the restaurant that I interned at. I love talking about stuff like this!
Holly, the hbp is worrisome. I hope you can find a good solution for this.
Jojo, I'm glad you didn't have too much damage from Irma. Is your DS still in the US? Sounds like you are keeping busy but having fun as well
Joan, wow 1200 cal per day is so little! I definitely am taking in more than that. I am so sorry for your DGSs having to deal with the kind of person that their father is. What terrible things your HS friend has had to suffer through, just one of those is enough to destroy someone.
The exec sous chef makes up the schedule typically each Fri, so I should hear by Fri whether they need me for next week. I told them my preferred days were Tues, Wed, Thurs, so we'll see what happens.

Sue, more often than not on weekends I go up to 1500 calories---but I am eating a lot--today I had a ham sandwich for lunch with carrots and a couple T of hummus and one of my zuchinni brownies. Had cottage cheese and pear for breakfast with a little bit of greek yogurt and part of a mango before gym. Tonight I will make an arugula chicken butternut squash salad for myself with a bit of quinoa on it and fruit for dessert. Some mornings I have a slice of Dave's Killer Bread thin slice with smashed avocado, some I have egg whites, avocado and quinoa, and some I have poached egg and toast. Did have oatmeal one day this week. Last night's dinner was grass fed ground beef patty and brocolli and cantaloupe.
I walked early this morning--63 degrees of awesomeness! Did yoga and weights at the gym.
Cleaning out my pantry today--will attack my side of the closet tomorrow.
Feeling so sad for Puerto Rico--it is such a beautiful island with wonderful people there---so glad we had that week a few years ago--the Carribbean damage this year is so terrible.

It seems that often I post and it shows up on the post then just disappears - frustrating - has happened a lot- but guess can't complain since a free site!
Continuing to work on the power washing. Yesterday took the afternoon off to visit a friend in rehab for a knee replacement.
So upsetting about the equifax breech. Have any of you heard from them about being affected. I have not but still wonder. I have credit monitoring with them after a breech with the orthopedic group I use.
Holly How much bp med are you on? I am still amazed at your problem with your bp for your age. I know it causes you worry.
Joan you put so much thought and prep into your meals. They always sound scrumptious and healthy. It seems that I never returned think mine out like you and just through something together at the last moment. Wish I had your planning brain!
Sue maybe you could offer your services as a consultation planner for parties/catering. You could do it any time and not have to worry with weekends! Some people just have to know the how and what - like me with decorating and landscaping.
Need to get off my b and get outside. Have painters coming Mon. For estimate. Patio looking good but more to do. The driveway will take forever as it is so long.my water bill is going to be astronomical - but if I had had someone do it , I would still have the water bill plus the cost of the washing so I guess I am saving something. I own the power washer.
I talked to my neighbor to see if her famity in Mexico City are ok. She said yes, thank goodness. The earthquakes have been terrible. I heard this morning that the entire island of Puerto Rico is without power!
