This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year Olds board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Carol2, thanks for reminding me about the Leslie Sansone tapes. I don't have them, but can get them on my laptop or maybe even on the one of the TV's, if I can figure them out. I have done them before, and am fine with even an extra 10 or 15 minutes if the dog does't bother me. Remind me where you live again, are you in Texas also? I know I have asked before, but I get you and CarolO mixed up I think.
CarolO, so great to take a shower after you haven't for a while. Good to let your DH sleep when he can. When is he scheduled for his surgery?
Jill, I hope your DF is feeling OK after his chemo, each person feels differently. When my uncle was getting his chemo I did a little research, and it seems that seeing as they treat each type of tumor with different meds, people react differently. Sometimes they are worse 7 days after a treatment. They also all have a different schedule. Hope he manages OK.
I read about 40 or so more pages of Underground RR. I have it for another 7 days, so can read the rest slowly if I want. I got to a point where I knew it would be a harder read, so switched to the Karin Slaughter book I have, which maybe wasn't so great either because it is a thriller. I just looked at my hold list from my county library. I have one book on there that will come in about 3 weeks, the others much longer. I also have my list from NY Public, and have a book from there, The North Water, that I got off some list somewhere. I think it was something like, most underrated books. I'll let you know what I think.
We had a small amount of snow last night, less than an inch, and it didn't stick on the roads, so wasn't icy this morning when I walked. It's below freezing now, but didn't feel bad out, and it's supposed to go up to 34. Typical January for us really. Maybe a little more snow tomorrow, but I hope it is clear Sunday when DH has to fly to Florida for a conference. My sister is coming out to have dinner with me and my mother, I don't think DH will be back from a court date they have for a client in the city this afternoon.

Good Morning from the frozen tundra! A heat wave here today--LOL!!! I see it is already a -4 here and supposed to get up to single digits. Hooray----and then the teens tomorrow. I didn't read or listen last night either as I had hoped, ended the day with a bad headache and body aches. I laid on the couch for an hour and then just went to bed at 9:00----which is very early for me. Feeling better this morning but not 100%, guessing it is some kind of bug.
Carol2----so glad to hear you are feeling better.
CarolO----doesn't a shower do wonders for making one feel better. Glad you did okay with seeing the staples in your foot---I probably would have passed out. Still thinking of you for a speedy recovery.
Jill----Hugs dear friend and wishing you and your dad strength and good thoughts as he goes through this difficult journey. My DBIL is about to have his 5th treatment in his 6 step chemo plan. He has one every 3 weeks and although his numbers are down showing the cancer results he hasn't felt very well. The positive number improvement is really keeping him and his family going on this. Thinking of you!!
Robin----I will take your 34 degrees right now, it sounds grand! Would you suggest the Underground RR as a good bookclub read?

Good morning. I too am in the frozen tundra....of course Green Bay Wi is the place noted to be THE frozen tundra. We have been laughing about that this week, with all the attention about the game this Sunday, here, playing the Giants. Nationally as I said they all refer to GB as the frozen tundra, but the playing field at the stadium is covered and heated. When they uncover it sunday, it will still stay heated...so there really is no frozen tundra. Temp here right now up here, 18 miles north of GB is -4* Good times.
Robin, they showed the stats for our weather in December, and said we got a total of 23", which I was surprised by, it didn't seem like we had had that much. Some did melt, with thaws that we had. It has been pretty quiet, snow wise for awhile, seems like all those snow storms are going around us.
Pinky, I hope you can shake whatever bug that is, that is trying to take hold of you.
In a little bit we will be going to the Y, for our first major workout. Then a stop at the grocery store, since last night we invited DH brother and his wife over to watch the game Sunday. So it will be venison brats and venison burgers all on the grill, and potato salad. Sister in law is making a vegie pizza, which I will be very interested to see how that turns out, since she has to eat gluten free.
Have a great day everyone.

Woke up to a dusting of snow and cold temps today. I'm off to the mall for a couple of hours. We just bought a MacBook Pro desktop and I need an owners manual!!! Does anyone here have one - and how do you like it?
Carol2, so glad you're feeling better! Jill, thoughts are with you - is your dad managing so far? Karen, I'll me making your soup today or tomorrow! Robin, just out of couiosity (and generally speaking) what does a two-family house sell for? What would the taxes be there? Would these houses be in move-in condition or fixer-uppers?

Anngie, he is paying $1,360,000 for this one. Taxes are on the high side, around $8,000, because it is being taxed as a 3 family for some reason. Property taxes in the city are nowhere near as high as on Long Island. This is a fixer upper, but really not in bad condition at all. There is one 2 bedroom apt, and 1 3 bedroom. He will probably rent the smaller one for around $3,000, the bigger one for more, not sure. However, he could also flip it soon. They bought one that closed a few months ago, and has been used by ABC in a TV show, maybe one of the Law and Orders, not sure, but they will make about enough to pay their mortgage for the year on that one, and I think they will use it for 2 weeks.
Pinky, my uncle also had a 6 treatment series, every 3 weeks. He finished it, his numbers have been much better, he is feeling much better, but still needs to wait for re-tests to be sure what happened. He has non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
Karen, isn't the field itself heated in Green Bay? Still pretty cold to play in. I don't envy the teams that need to play like that, although games have been played in the snow too. You reminded me that I should watch that game.
Pinky, not sure what your book club likes, Underground RR is not long, but there are certainly parts of it that are not pleasant. I think Faithful by Alice Hoffman is a good book club read. Not really a happy book either, but one that has a lot going on, a lot to discuss.

Yes, I am in Texas, small town north of Dallas. It is 20 degrees and snowing. The roads are covered, but from what I've heard, they are not slick. It sounds cliche, but Texans do not know how to drive in bad weather. When I was working, I hated having to drive in snow or sleet. People would drive like it was bright and sunny-tailgate and speed. Once when there was ice on the road, DH was passed by a car speeding. A couple of miles up, he came upon the same car in a ditch. He stopped to help, but they had already called someone to come.
Pinky, I hope you are feeling better.
Anngie, usually you can get manuals online. Have you tried the Apple web site? There is also a site called manualslib where you can find manuals for appliances and other things.
I finally finished Everyone Brave. I give it a 3. As I said before, it was hard to get into. The n word is used quite a bit. One of the characters must be the only non-prejudiced person in WW2 London. Everyone she talks to uses that word. Anyway, it was okay. I liked it better than Little Bee by the same author.
I am happy I can stay in today.

good afternoon! A brisk 33° here today, and breezy. Folks here are dressed like Nanook of the north and complaining about the cold:)
was up early this a.m. and got my free Friday nook book= Highland Fire by Crosby. A another romance, but light as I seem unable to concentrate well..
robin--that is a fat percentage for you selling on that island! DHs surgery will be a surprise date--one never knows. When an organ is donated the most ill person whose blood a tissues etc match get it. Not like taking a number at the deli and when your number is up you go. An uncertain future. Right now would be a terrible time for us, and while I want DH to breathe better, I could not assist him now...
pinky--don't let that bug take hold of you!
Karen--kudos to you for going to the Y:)
Angie--coming to you from a Surface Pro 2, and I am totally an electronic idiot. Have fun at the mall!
Have a good day all! CarolO

I typed up a post earlier, but looks like it never got here. Memories of the old WW site, although it never happened here before. CarolO, I dress like Nanook of the North when I go out in that weather too. Luckily now my dog did not feel like taking the long walk, I could tell, so we did a short one. I am going to have to get him booties. I am not a realtor, so I don't get a high percentage, I get a small percentage of the loan amount. Realtors here don't make as high a commission either. And usually it is split 4 days, the 2 realtors, and their 2 companies. Yes, it can be a lot on one sale, and some make a lot of money, but most don't, and don't sell that many houses a year. Sorry that your DH has to wait for his surgery date, but can also understand how now would not be a great time for you either.
Carol2, I liked Little Bee, but this one doesn't sound good. I can never get over how cold it can get in Texas, 20 degrees is lower than it is here, however I know it is from the gulf stream when it dips down, and that is coming our way. We are supposed to have snow all day tomorrow, but the forecast seems to change hour by hour. Not sure how much it will be. I may have to call in my son for snow shoveling duty if there is too much, I can't shovel that much by myself at one time. I don't think my DH could even manage the snow blower right now. Next week when he will be gone it is not supposed to snow. Who knows.

Wow, Robin, I can't even imagine paying that much for a two-family and a fixer-upper to boot! Hard to even fathom making any kind of profit by flipping it too soon.
Carol2, I did check the Apple site but had no luck. At least I got to use a little of a mall gift certificate that I got many months ago. I'm going to check out that website you mentioned, though.
Carol0, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only electronic idiot in the world! I am SO bad , but I keep learning! haha
Did anyone happen to watch the special last night on the Menendez brothers? Just wondering what opinions might be.
I'm sickened over this tragedy at the FT. Lauderdale airport. What is this world coming too.

Howdy...want to keep up with the conversation, (and it is quiet here, so taking advantage!) Robin, yes, that is what I mentioned, the playing field of Lambeau is heated, so why does everyone refer to us as the frozen tundra? Get it...the tundra they are playing on is NOT frozen! Who cares what the temp is? teehee Wow, on that price! And the taxes! I hope you don't get any measurable snow...I shovel snow, but if it is over 4 or 5", DH has to blow it, I won't take any chances with my back.
Anngie, sorry, no help with anything other than HP. It stinks now that you have to go online to get help on our electronics. Yum, enjoy that soup!! For a low point meal, it is great.
Carol2, my brother in law lives in McAllen Tx. He always posts on FB the extended forecast for the temps there, and of course he thinks the 60's and 50's are too cold. He won't even go for his walks in those temps!! I would be out walking everyday in those! About those stupid drivers...LOL, we have those here in Wisconsin, at the beginning of the winter season! About the N word...I can remember back in the early 60's that word was a normal word. You did not use it as a curse word, it was like saying: indian, or something like that. HA! At that time, up here in Packer country, if you would see an African American somewhere out and about, you knew it was a football player, because those were the only ones in Green Bay! (We have come a long way!!)
CarolO, hahaha, funny about 33 and and all bundled up! If that happened here right now, we would get out our capri's, tee shirts and flip flops!!
We did our Y work today, I was happy to also get to swim for 10 minutes besides. I have a 4# chicken roasting in the oven for dinner, it smells amazing. Will have boiled red potatoes and creamed corn. (I won't have the corn, will put some I can't believe it's not butter on the potatoe). Almost news time...bye now!

Jill, I looked back and saw that with getting off here before, I did not mention in my shout outs, about your Dad. Could you refresh my memory as to what cancer he has? I went thru lung cancer (stage 2) 3 years ago, and after the surgery, they had me go thru chemo, just in case. I went every 3 weeks, for 4 months, with it being the first day of chemo as a full day, then day 2 and 3, just the morning. I truly hated the start of another chemo session, since by then I felt ok, but that week after I was pretty sick and very tired. My sense of smell got very very sharp...I hated that! Of course I lost my hair, even sooner than they predicted. Did he get a port put in? That was a major goal for me, to get that removed! Another thing that I truly hated. I will NEVER go thru chemo again...they told me in survivorship counseling that I will get cancer back, but in my bones or brain...I will go thru holistic medicine, but not chemo. I will pray for your Dad...good luck.

Hi Robin, Pinky, Karen, Anngie, Carol2 and CarolO. I hope I didn't miss anyone. Thank you all for the good wishes for my Dad. Robin that is so true about the different types of chemo and reactions to them. He is tired today but so far so good. Pinky I am glad your Dbil numbers are going down. I am sorry he is not feeling well. I will continue to keep him in my prayers. Karen my Dad has pancreatic cancer. It is Stage 4 so not a good prognosis. He decided to try the chemo. I am just having a really hard time dealing with all of it. I am sorry for constantly repeating myself. Karen he doesn't have a port. My sister does have one. She has Stage 4 breast cancer but untill lately has been doing well. We are blessed in so many ways. I am at work so I better run. I hope everyone has a good evening. Take care. Hopefully I will find time to read again.
