This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year Olds board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Greetings from snowy NY. I was out already this morning because the snow had already started, and I needed to pick up some dry cleaning and stop at the supermarket. I also bought dog booties, but I see that my dog is not going to have a chance of keeping them on, so I hope they will let me return them. It was very light snow originally, but just started coming down harder. They were saying 1-3 inches, but who knows.
Jill, I am so sorry to hear about the prognosis for your dad and your sister. I know you have told us before, but maybe seeing them together will help us remember. Our prayers are with them and with you.
DH wants to watch the football games today. I am happy that he said that he was OK with cooking dinner, even though it would interrupt the games, but then we don't have to go out or wait for delivery. We have very good steaks in the freezer, and I will make baked sweet potatoes, sauteed mushrooms & onions, and sauteed spinach to go with it, just like a steak house meal! I bought some lunch and snack things at the supermarket. I have decided I will cook for myself while DH is away, rather than what I normally do, which is make a lot of frozen stuff, even though I keep points low on that. I have a spiralizer, so bought a zucchini to actually try to use it. I did try it once with a carrot. DH is not a zucchini person, and would not go with having zoodles.
I should be able to get a lot of reading done today, maybe even finish Underground RR. I only have 70 pages left. Otherwise I will do half of that today and the rest tomorrow. I will drop DH off at the airport early. He is flying Delta, and I hope that things are not really crazy because of the shooting yesterday. What a tragedy, and the fact that someone knew this guy was nuts?

We got more snow than was expected. It didn't stop until 5 p.m. The sun is out now, but it is only 22 degrees. There were 34 accidents yesterday in our town. Most were fender-benders. One was on a major highway, chain reaction with several cars involved so that part of the highway was closed for several hours. Most were from following too closely, not having enough room to stop.
Jill, I am so sorry about your dad and sister. Are they close by? It's hard having to be the strong one. You will be in my prayers.
I started reading The Thin Man. DS and DDIL got it for me for Christmas. I love the movie. It was written in the early 30s.
When DH is out of town, it is so tempting just to get take-out. I have started trying to cook for myself more. I forgot, where is your DH going?

Hi Robin, Carol2 and everyone! I am feeling much better today and so glad. We are taking 3 of our DGC to a high school basketball game today in which our DSIL is the head coach for. Should be interesting but didn't want to pass up a game that our son-in-law is coaching when it is so near our home(an hour away) when usually we have to drive at least 2 hours for any of his games. Our DD will be there with her 2 boys also. Wouldn't necessarily have taken the other grands with but their parents have had tickets to see Circa Du Solieu (SP) tonight in Sioux Falls and we had said we would watch the kids so they could go not realizing this game is today. Should make for an interesting day. DH and I went for breakfast this morning with DFriends.
Jill----I just got to say I love your positive attitude, yesterday you mentioned you have so many blessings to be thankful for and in the same paragraph both your DF and DS are dealing with stage 4 cancer. You are a rock and must be wonderful support for them.
Robin----enjoy your day in with your DH, sounds lovely---especially when he his going to be gone next week. Is it Florida he is going?
Carol2----wow that is a lot of accidents because of people just not knowing enough to slow down. Glad you are safe inside!
I am so sad to hear of the shooting at the Ft. Lauderdale airport, very scary!!!! Who knew you could put a gun in a carry on bag through airport security and get by with it----CRAZY!
We were busy with getting new computers set up in our office yesterday so never made it back. Think all is working well. DH bought me a new laptop for the house too and I have had a desktop in the house so not really sure I like the laptop thing. Will see, but I did get my printer and programs on it that I needed so I guess I am good to go. I am not good with change so I am questioning all of this but guess you gotta update some time.
Have a great weekend friends!!!!

DH is going to Orlando for a conference. It is run by the U of Miami Law School, and he has been going to it for about 30 years. I can't remember the first year he went.
I think the suspect in the shooting yesterday had the gun in his checked luggage, but did tell them he had it, but apparently allow that. However, this guy had talked to the FBI, so shouldn't there be some kind of list where someone like that couldn't carry a gun legally? He was being treated for psychiatric issues, so where are the guidelines? We are much more anti-gun in NY, so have different attitudes about this altogether.
Carol, that certainly is a lot of accidents. I am sure there will be loads here, but maybe not quite as many bigger ones, however we have plenty of those when the roads are perfectly clear. Looks like we might end up with more than the 1-3 that they were saying.
Pinky, I was given a laptop by my company about 10 years ago and thought I would never get used to it, but now don't know why I would ever want to sit in one place with a desktop. That might be what you will find yourself doing, carrying it around with you, so you can check things from various places.

I, too, have a hard time understanding why someone who has a documented psychological history can bring a gun on a plane. But, as we know, God forbid the poor soul who brings on a 5oz. bottle of hand lotion!
Pinky, I think you'll come to like your laptop. I'm even getting good at the touchpad to mineuver around instead of a mouse - and I even had a wireless mouse! Nice, too, that you can easily move about the house. We've had laptops for a few years now. Karen, wow - you've had quite a time of it yourself! Glad to hear you're doing so well! Jill, you are all in my prayers. YOU are a strong individual! If you don't mind me asking, what is your sister's prognosis? Breast cancer has come a long way. Robin, your steak dinner sounds delicious! Have you ever used a George Forman grill? I'm thinking about getting one. Carol2, I'm not familiar with The Thin Man. I'll look that one up!

Jill, I am truly sorry, for your family, and for all you are going thru. You know the saying, God doesn't give us more than he thinks we can handle...but still!!! A double dose for you all...how horrible. Good for your Dad, as he must have strong faith, to go thru chemo. If I was stage 4, I after going thru it, would not any more. Am curious about your answer about yours sisters prognosis. I am sorry to pester you...I should have remembered about your family. One of the side effects of chemo is chemo brain, which my DH says I have. I see it in some ways, but I am still stubborn to admit it. I am praying for you all.
Robin, hope your snow has quit by now. The weather guys here said that for the month of Dec we had 23" of snow, which is about 10" over normal, but I can't remember the last time we had snow, maybe around christmas. We had a few dustings but nothing measurable. I really did not know you could carry on a gun...that is just plain stupid. I finished the book Five Presidents last night, which was written by Clint Hill, a retired Secret Service agent, and according to him, the Secret Service has files on all the nut cases, as that is needed, when protecting the President, his family and the VP. You would think the FBI would have lists that should be known to the airlines as to all of these people that have a history of mental illness. Have a good day with your DH, and enjoy your dinner, sounds excellent!
Carol2...wow, that is really alot of accidents, good thing they were just fender benders...but that sure screws up the traffic! Then you have the rubber neckers, that cause accidents.
Pinky, I agree with everyone else, that has voiced an opinion about laptops, compared to desktops. Our desktop got moved to the basement, since DH and I both got a laptop about 4 years ago. I could never go back to being on the desktop. I have my laptop in the living room, so nice, but yes, I am on it more than if I had to go sit at the desktop. But then we have our phones too, so I guess it equals out.
Anngie, I have had a wireless mouse for a few years, love it! Of all the electronics that I have, the phone, kindle, desktop and laptop, I love my laptop the most, partly because of the wireless mouse. I like the phone for the speed, but hate typing on it.
Well...best laid plans...happened here. We were going to have DH brother and his wife for the game tomorrow. So this morning I got all the ingredients made for potato salad, all I have to do is assemble it. Bought beer for them, since all I drink is wine, and DH drinks an occasional hard cider...DBIL had a cold all week, is now getting better, so his wife just called saying she now has the cold, should they still come? DH get bronchitis at the drop of the hat, so we really would not want her here. SO, no company to eat all that potato salad. Oh well...

Anngie, I wasn't even thinking that. So they said the only thing the guy had with him was this gun he checked? Do they have brains? That they don't stop, but when my DBIL died, and I had to fly down to Myrtle Beach at the last minute with my 2 teenage boys and my mother they thought we might all be terrorists! I'll never forget what they put us through at that time. DH was just leaving a conference, which happened to have been in Hilton Head, so he just drove there. But this nut with 1 gun, that's OK, right?
Snow has not stopped yet, it looks like there is about 5 or 6 inches. The dog didn't want to be out very long, the snow was coming down too hard.
Karen, sorry your plans changed for your guests. How about inviting over some friends? My DH likes hard cider too. Mostly he drinks it when we tailgate, but once in a while he will open a bottle at home.
I don't use a mouse, but my laptop had this little thing in the middle of the keyboard that I prefer to use. We have numerous wireless mice around, but I just got used to that and use it. I have always used Lenovo laptops.
Anngie, I don't really like the George Forman grill, I don't think it ever gets hot enough. I like using a grill pan. However, truthfully, what we do, is sous vide our vaccuum sealed steaks, then we just put them in the grill pan to sear the outside to make them look nice. They come out perfectly evenly rare that way.
