Hello Crafters - Hope you are all doing well today Ginny - How exciting to find out the gender of the new GC soon. I think that's a good idea so you can pick colors once you find out. Hope things go well with the bus driver training. I give you a lot of credit for doing that, I know from my father's experience that it isn't always easy. Hope you're enjoying the quiet week too. Ruth - I'm afraid to put any of my car windows down except for the driver side. I don't want to have to get another window repaired! I know I need to seriously think about getting a new card. Hope your blankets are coming along. Also hope the wind dies down before you go out tomorrow. Meg - I'm glad you're getting some rest and that you won't have to worry about taking Devin to school when the weather gets bad. I hope you aren't affected by the fires and/or smoke - it looks so terrible there. Hope you are getting to some crafting today. Phyl - I hope your hip is still feeling good and you're getting to do some crafting. It's cloudy and rainy here, but getting cooler. I'll be happy when the temperatures stay in the 60s/70s so I can get the heat out of the house and put the Air Conditioners away for the year. I've been cutting some weeds out of trees and bushes in my yard. I found that my neighbor's grape vine had grown over the fence and was wrapping it's self all around in my Redbud tree. I'm glad I saw it because it was killing the tree. I got it all cut out of there, so I hope I save the tree. I was upset that the neighbor let that happen, I know he could see it from his side. I'll keep an eye on it now and not let that happen again. Take care everyone!

CJ, thank you for mentioning redbuds! I had forgotten about them. We had lovely trees in Arkansas..Redbuds, Dogwood, and Mimosa's. I think most people disliked the Mimosas but I loved them. The hummingbirds loved them too. Unfortuanately the second year we went there there was a late frost which killed the blossons and the tree never did very well after that and I ended up cutting it down. My pastor said they spread like crazy and sure enough the last year we were there a bunch of new Mimosa's had sprung up. We didn't have any Dogwoods or Redbuds actually on our property but there were a lot around so I cut some and had it in my house the whole time I lived I owned that house. They were beautiful.. Oh and I loved the forsythia too. I've never seen those here either. And also hydrangea...well all of the flowers, trees, birds and a lot of other beautiful things there I just loved. Didn't care much for the ticks or the water moccasins though. And the mosquitoes there caused huge lumps on me when they bit which the ones here don't.

Hi everyone, Ginny the blanket 36x42 would also be a good size for a crib I think you can make a b/blanket any size you want it to be. I have a b/blanket that I crocheted awhile back and when I looked at it when it was finished It was a really odd shape. Some how the bottom was quite a bit wider than the top. I didn't rip it out some one can use it for a blanket to put the baby on when playing on the floor. All my other b/blankets are fine so I don't know what I was thinking when I made that one. I am sure you are anxious to get started on the b/blanket for the new DGC, The pattern you mentioned sounds beautiful.
Phyl, you were working on a b/blanket a couple of months ago and I printed out a copy of it. I will have to check through my patterns and see if I still have it. Did you get your b/blanket finished?
Ruth, I agree with you I don't like to see babies not properly dressed or covered when the weather is cold. Often the parents are dressed warmly but they forget about the baby. You are not the only one making mistakes on patterns that you have used many times. I do that and it is usually a pattern that I know by heart. Your crayon colored b/ blanket sounds very nice.
Ginny, do you drive a very large bus or a small one? I see all sizes driving around here. I don't think I could drive one of those huge buses. Good luck with your training.
cj, I don't live close to where they have the fires they are further north. However we have bad air quality from the smoke that is in the air. I stay home as much as possible because it would irritate my eyes. I am glad you can now open your window on the drivers side.
I hope to start working on the afghan for DGD this evening. I get distracted by wanting to read so I will have to start another audio book and then I will be quite happy working on my afghan. I haven't done much today just having another lazy day.
Phyl, I wish you and all our crafting friends a good evening.

Good evening- Ruth, do you think you will go out shopping tomorrow? the crayon colors blanket sounds adorable.....and I am very glad that you figured out what your mistake was and have been able to correct for it. You are a better woman than I am for sure....you can find your mistakes!!
Well....getting a CDL is not an easy process. First you have to pass a written test for driving a large vehicle, and that includes air brakes, the pre trip for a school bus, how to drive in bad weather (wth something what weighs 29,000 # empty) etc....at that point the driver has a learners permit. In NY you must be 21 or older to drive a school bus. I train in between my am and pm- I go in a little after 6 am to drive in the kids- punch out at 9. If I am training, I will work with the new driver from 9 to around 11. I go back in to take the creatures home at 1:30......and end my day around 4:45 if all goes well. My "training" is just to get the person to pass the road test, After they pass the road test then they must be fingerprinted and appointed by the school board. Once that is all done, they are officially hired, and I usually see that driver again for a few days when they ride with me on my route with kids on board to see how to put everything together. the knowledge that I teach for the road test is just the first 30% of it all...although admittedly if a trainee is listening while driving I give out LOTS of tips on handling the kids, student management/parent management etc....Driving a school bus should not be someone's second job- proper rest is important- and your story about the woman who worked for the hospital at night and drove a bus in the day is common, but scarey.
think I found a pattern for a baby afghan.....so I got some crafting time in today. Ginny

OH gee, I missed a bunch of posts. Yes, I drive a BIG yellow bus, all 40 feet long of it.
Meg, hope that you get to start work on DGD's afghan this evening.
CJ-I will have to google what a redbud tree is....but I sure hope you were able to save it. Its very frustrating when a neighbor lets his property go and that impacts your property.
Sorry, I am pooped. Have a good night Ginny

howdy, howdy, howdy, I Was at sit and sew yesterday. the stockings are to replace the old granny squares ones I made for the kids years ago. I hang them on the divider In the kitchen . the granny ones were made way back when the girls were young. just figured it was time for something new.
I pulled a good one yesterday. on 2 of the stocking for top stitching I was using sulky decorated thread. I could not figure out why the bobbin thread kept breaking. would sew for awhile. then it hit me. you dummy you don't use sulky thread in the bobbin.. I may have to replace that stitching. I know one dealer will not even carry that brand anymore. I have had this for a lot of years. bitter lesson it is.
meg no the blanket is not done. I am stuck. not with the knitting but with the directions. I think I kinda know but just need to be sure.
the hip is still doing great girls. phyl

I could never drive a large vehicle like that. Dh wanted me for years to learn to drive towing a boat trailer or other kind of trailor but couldn't do it. The largest thing I every drove is a full size pickup truck.
Ginny, I'm glad you found a pattern you like. I'd be interested in seeing the girl one with the flower. If you could just give me the name I could look it up myself. I know you're very busy. I definitely have the one you just mentioned on my list and think I may do that one next. I plan to have a blanket in progress at all times to work on between other projects. I have two blankets actually in progress right now.
Meg, I was thinking of doing that with this blanket when the side became narrower ...that is leave it like that and act like it's supposed to be that way. There's no reason why people can't adapt and be creative in using things. I think many baby blankets have become special ways to wrap baby in it because a mistake was made that lended the particular blanket to that use by having sides that curved out that then could be folded over the baby then the bottom of the blanket brought up to snuggly wrap that baby.

Good afternoon, This darned cold had me up a lot last night, so I took the afternoon off. Hoping to get a nap in.
Ruth, will somehow get the link over to you for the pretty girl afghan. Yes you could drive a bus. Once you overcome the fear of something that big, it is easy.
Phyl- why are dealers no longer carrying sulky? My mom used to make granny square Christmas stockings for us.....nice that you are keeping the tradition and making it your own too!! Glad your hip is ok.
Gonna take a nap Ginny

Hello Crafters - Hope you are all doing well today
Phyl - I'm glad to hear the hip is still doing well. Sorry to hear about your thread problem. I've read a lot on the Internet where people say they have to use different threads in the bobbin. Since I haven't done much but quilt piecing I just use the same thread for that.
Meg - I'm glad you are not near the fires, but you are smart to stay out of that bad air. I can imagine it's going to be a while before it's clear again.
Ruth - We have mimosa trees here, I think they are pretty too. We used to have dogwoods in our yard, but a disease came through the area and killed them. Used to have forsythia too, it's still around a lot in the Spring. I have 3 Hydrangeas in the yard, I love to see them in the Summer. We also have Crape Myrtle trees and those are so pretty too.
Ginny - I'm sure you're a good teacher, they are lucky to have you as a trainer. Hope your weather doesn't get too cool too quickly, it's nice to enjoy Fall for awhile.
I'm just doing things around the house today, not feeling motivated to craft. I'm hoping to go to a quilt show tomorrow. It's the last one of the year around here. The weather is cooler here too and cloudy with some rain. But we're supposed to have another 80 degree day this weekend and then it looks like it will finally cool down. I'll be so happy to put away the air conditioners.
Take care everyone!

Good morning, it is still morning here. I have been out doing some errands. We have a cold wind blowing today. I am going to have to get my winter clothes out. When I was checking my e-mails this morning I found this and thought it would be interesting to make. I could probably knit it. I just thought I would share it with you since you ate all into making table runners.

I have to go but I will be back later.

Ginny, I do agree that it's a matter of just getting used to certain sizes of vehicles. I always thought I couldn't drive a full size pick up truck. Of course that's a lot smaller than a very large school bus like you drive.
CJ, the last quilt show already? Don't they have any near the holidays?
Phyl, I, too, am happy for you that the hip doesn't hurt right now. I hope that effect of the cortisone will last.
Well I finished hte last row of the baby blanket. It's nice and even and just need the edging which is exactly the same as the body of the blanket to it will take about five minutes to do that then I'll weave in the ends as the pattern is not conducive to crocheting over the ends where you join a new skein.
I'm hoping that I'll see when they're going to have the craft show at the local shopping center. I always like going to that and getting inspiration. It often makes me think about selling some of my stuff but then I remind myself that that's a lot of work both to make everything and to sit there all day trying to sell.
I need to do some things around the house then I'll work on the sweater. and then move on to other things on my list. Tomorrow I'll weave in ends on my hats that are to be donated.
Meg, I'll definitely look that up.Most things can either be knitted or crocheted. Several years ago someone gave me a pattern for what they called Tawaski knot scrubbies which started as strips of knit. At the time I didn't even think about the fact that I could crochet those strips instead of knitting them. I still have some that I never did make into the scrubbies and they're actually sitting right near me now. I should finish those too. I sent one to a friend and her daughter "adopted" it so I need to finish these and send to my friend for her and her daughter.

Good evening!
CJ- when I was a kid, a neighbor had a mimosa tree, which I thought was absolutely beautiful. I am jealous......they are lovely when they bloom and have such graceful leaves. Enjoy the quilt show! (Wish I was going with you). Hope that the cooler weather/rain does not bother you - a nice change from the hot and so humid weather we had only a week ago.
Meg, thanks for posting the link for that adorable turkey table runner! Its so darned cute....I can see my DGD loving that. Looks like its not a tough project to accomplish either.
Ruth ,congrats on finishing the baby blanket. I agree, its a boatload of work making items for sale, and then having to give up so much time selling. I am not sure if you actually earn what the items are worth for time and material. I know for a large quilt, to see a price of several hundred dollars....well it seems pricey until you realize all the cutting, piecing, and fabric expense that goes into it.
there is a decent craft fair in my home town usually in early December. Its a fund raiser for the school PTA. I used to go....but they charge to get in the door- and the number of crafters has gone down over the years. It used to be a huge craft fair, and is much smaller. Like you all, I enjoy going to gain inspiration. Would rather attend the quilt show in the spring.
I got a nap in this afternoon and while I am very hoarse I do feel a little better. My stomach is upset now too.....glad I took the afternoon off to rest up a bit.
Have a good evening Ginny

Ginny, I sure hope you're feeling better soon and Im glad you took the afternoon off to rest.
At this particular craft show here they can't charge admission because it's in the walkway in the little shopping center where people go to walk up and down every dayfor exercise and to get from one store to another. Not like a mall but maybe it could be called a strip mall. It's all inside. I haven't been there actually since I retired which is now 14 years...I didn't realize it was that long. Of course they also have people selling junk there but I love to get ideas by looking at the knitted and crocheted items. You can find out what's trendy right now in handmade items because that will be the thing a LOT of the people there are trying to sell. When I was there last it was those skinny boa scarves and that was a long time ago. Ginny, you're sure right. That's another reason I don't bother selling. You definitely never can charge enough to be paid much at all for the time you put in. I see there are some baby blankets being sold on Etsy that are 30x40 and the price is $55.00.After you deduct the price of yarn I bet that doesn't even come out to $1 per hour for your time and people probably think they're too expensive. One of the big churches here has a craft show every year and they charge to get in. I've never been to that one.
Well I did finished the blanket completely and since the sweater is still in the bedroom and dh has been napping I made one of the little balls I'm going to give the dggc for Christmas...one of their gifts. It was easy to make and the leftover yarn ends are perfect for stuffing it. Now I wish I'd kept all my yarn ends instead of deciding to throw some away. And I didn't have to put them into anything because the balls are all sc and are tight so no yarn ends can be seen thru or come thru. I may have enough for one more ball then after that I'll have to use fiberfill which will work fine too. I was to make 9...three for each of the babies.so Yay, i have a head start on Christmas.I had a small ball of leftover variegated yarn that I must have got at Caps for Kids that I used and it made a beautiful colored ball. I think I have enough of that for one more ball too but I have lots of small leftover balls of yarn and this will be a perfect project for using up some of it.
