Good Morning Train Riders,
This morning it was 18º (feels like 9º) and going up to 39º and mostly cloudy with wind E 6 mph today.
It’s back to our normal schedule of school for the girls and King will be going in for his first day of work today.
Maxine calendar today: These days, people spend lots of time and money on the perfect wardrobe … and that’s just for their dogs.
Another Japan memory: I’m continuing from yesterday aboard the SS America Transport ship crossing the Pacific Ocean. We had beautiful sunny weather for 9 days. On the tenth day the captain told us we would be going further north than the usual route because he was taking us that way to avoid a typhoon. In the afternoon we started noticing that the waves were getting bigger and the wind stronger. We were advised not to walk the decks more than necessary so we spent most of the day in the lounge where we could read or play games or cards in our cabins. The captain told us it wouldn’t get any worse than it was and we just had choppy waves at that point. Because we had to take a different route it took a day longer than the usual trip and we arrived in Yokohama harbor in the evening after dark and too late to go through customs. We had to stay on the ship in the harbor overnight and we could hear some of the sounds of Japan like the vendors going around with their carts calling “udon” (bowls of noodles) for sale. The air was very still after the typhoon had gone through and there was no breeze to cool us with the temperature in the 90s. More tomorrow.

Good morning, Doris & Train Riders,
A lot of rain here with a gradual warm up to low 40's. Some of the ramps are icy and traffic is a mess around the area.
I hope the dining room crew can make it here this morning. Yesterday the managers became waiters. They live here, too.
Doris, you had so many experiences even before arriving in Japan. I would have been sea sick with the first choppy wave.
May your day be smooth!

Good Morning!
Doris, you must have been a good sailor! I think I would have been seasick. In fact, I am sure I would have been! I get carsick riding in the back seat, so choppy waves -- yeah....
Our temp is to be in the 50s today, 60s tomorrow, up to mid 70s Wednesday! Then it will cool back down and we could see snow on Saturday. I doubt that anything will stick then, since it is only to go down into the mid 30s. So we shouldn't be confined to quarters again. Today we will go to a "catch up" shopping for ourselves and for DD, since parking lots were quite "iffy" this past weekend. But, I think this temp roller coas ter is why so many of us cannot shake the sinus trouble.
But the kids are back to their usual schedule and that is good. Pray for DGD1 to be able to organize herself without her meds. She says the service won't take her if she is on ADHD med, and she really wants that option! She has stopped the meds, bur she is having trouble with her focus. This may be God's way of shutting that particular door to her. Who knows?
Have a lovely day, friends! Hope it is a warmer one for all of you! Cat, hope the servers get there! Phyl, enjoy lunch out!
Diane

Good morning Doris & ATF,
Last night was the coldest night for us this year so far.....7; it's now 11. I guess the sun is warming us up. I haven't been out of the house since Friday. I need to pick up meds and some food so I guess I'm going to venture out.
Laundry later nothing exciting. Feel so bad for my little guys going out to school in this cold. Even though they are driven in a warm car.
Have a great day everyone!

I am waiting on a call from the furnace tech. But in meantime the furnace is running, just very noisy. I am staying home to take the call, not sure he will come today but probably for sure tomorrow. Freezing rain, sleet and snow predicted for tonight and tomorrow so won't be going anywhere anyway. Was going to grocery store but it will be Wed. or Thursday now. Depending on the furnace people.
The sky is very blue today and there is some sunshine but it is deceiving as only in single digits again. I have never been on a ship so don't know if that would make me sick or not. don't think it is that kind of motion that makes me sick. More of a backing up out of a parking lot type of motion that gets to me, if I am watching the car next to me I get a instant rush of disorientation.
Hope that King's job is a good fit for him. Even when kids ride the bus like most of them do around here the bus stops at every house and the kids just run out and get on. No more little bus stop buildings. But my girls never waited in the buildings anyway. they always said they smell!! Funny!! The whole neighborhood waiting at the same place. We still have big bus runs and my neighbor drives a large school bus. She loves all her kids as she calls them. Think they love her too. More high school kids are driving to school though than they did when my girls were in highschool.

That was good of the captain of the ship to avoid the typhoon and save his passengers.
Here's a part of the diary from August 1961. Apparently we all got shots but I never said what kind they were. So here are some exerpts from that time starting with a typical day on the farm. "Rained off and on all day. Got .20 in of rain. Cool in the lower 60's. Couldn't get our big washing dried. Mom canned quite a few quarts of tomatoes and catsup. Butchered chicken.....Cleaned school Ruthie came and helps us until 3:00 We are very tired and stiff. Big dish washing after supper. .....Went to picnic in Crete, just J T Claassen children were there. Everyone but Verniel had fever when we came home....Ironing started. Went to town in the afternoon. Nurse saw our shots. All are red and sore. Visited both grandma's. Have fever."
That picnic would have been with my dad's side, Grandparents had 7 children and 19 grandchildren and we got together frequently. My Parents were third cousins so the big Claasssen picnic would have been with both sides and that happened too, unfortunately we don't do that anymore, there would be thousands!
