We are a group of like-minded people that gather to discuss a host of topics from weight loss, to current events. Our thread celebrates liberal diversity, welcomes new friends, and respects all opinions. We count everything from calories to points but, we never count our chickens before they've hatched!

The federal week in review: 1. Trump fires all Ambassadors and Special Envoys, ordering them out by inauguration day. 2. House brings back the Holman rule allowing them to reduce an individual civil service, SES positions, or political appointee's salary to $1, effectively firing them by amendment to any piece of legislation. We now know why they wanted names and positions of people in Energy and State. 3. Senate schedules 6 simultaneous hearings on cabinet nominees and triple-books those hearings with Trump's first press conference in months and an ACA budget vote, effectively preventing any concentrated coverage or protest. 4. House GOP expressly forbids the Congressional Budget Office from reporting or tracking ANY costs related to the repeal of the ACA. 5. Trump continues to throw the intelligence community under the bus to protect Putin, despite the growing mountain of evidence that the Russians deliberately interfered in our election. 6. Trump breaks a central campaign promise to make Mexico pay for the wall by asking Congress (in other words, us, the taxpayers) to pay for it. 7. Trump threatens Toyota over a new plant that was never coming to the US nor will take jobs out of the US. 8. House passes the REINS act, giving them veto power over any rules enacted by any federal agency or department--for example, FDA or EPA bans a drug or pesticide, Congress can overrule based on lobbyists not science. Don't like that endangered species designation, Congress kills it. We - progressive, liberal, libertarian and conservative - need to all wake up to what is actually happening to our beloved country. #UnitedWeStand

Good morning everyone!
Linda, thanks for posting that. The future we are looking at is very frightening.
Hopefully next week I will be able to settle into a routine and stay abreast of the news again. I really miss doing that. For now, it is a super busy day here. Tomorrow is moving day for my dad, and there is so much to be done before then that I am trying not to let my mind go there--instead just keep working like a robot trying to get everything ready. Then Thursday we will move my mom from rehab into the AL. When I stop to actually think about everything that needs to be done, I just get totally overwhelmed. So I am telling myself that everything doesn't have to be accomplished by tomorrow. The goal is to just get their furniture moved and my dad settled in. Other things, the little "this makes things my home" sort of stuff can be done a little at a time over the next few days, and after all they will only be 2 miles away so it's not as if I forget something it will be a major disaster. That's what my mind is telling me. Unfortunately, sometimes I am not a good listener to my own advice.
So forward march . . . Wishing each one of you a lovely day, and looking forward to being able to sit down and just enjoy coffee over the thread again.

"We - progressive, liberal, libertarian and conservative - need to all wake up to what is actually happening to our beloved country." Exactly! We need to take an honest, maybe painful, look at how the orange-oaf and the rep/cons were able to sell their venomous snake oil to so many people. I believe there are many reasons for this disaster. This, imho, is one of them. Here's a snippet... "When a 2,700-year-old book that was written by uneducated, pre-scientific people, subject to translation innumerable times, and edited with political and economic pressures from popes and kings, is given higher intellectual authority than facts arrived at from a rigorous, self-critical, constantly re-evaluating system that can and does correct mistakes, no amount of understanding, respect or evidence is going to change their minds and assuage their fears." www.alternet.org/election-2016/rural-america-understanding-isnt-problem

I don't know how educated the people who wrote this book were for their times, but at least we know they could read and write.......but then we get to the crux of the matter.

Patty Bird- you know I was just teasing you don't you? Lin-You did a great job keeping the thread rolling and keeping us together over the holidays. Keep meaning to thank you. THANK YOU!
Why do I keep thinking of Tweetie as Putin's big orange dancing bear?

AhhhHa! ..Top .Intel Chiefs have info on Trump & that the Russians do have personal & business info on him that could bring him down...and that surrogates of Trump were in contact with the Russians. Gosh, I hope this is the beginning of the end of Trump. Let him go down in a blaze of disgrace! ...

"Let him go down in a blaze of disgrace!" If only that would happen, and he wouldn't take the rest of us down with him . . .
As for those who want to take the Bible literally rather than the way I personally believe it was intended, that's a discussion for a lot greater depth than I can give it this evening.
OK, for my woe of the day . . . This afternoon the AL place told me they had still not received the paperwork on my mom. So I go to talk to the social worker at rehab to find out what the hold up is. Guess what! The person who told me she was going to be released on Thursday was NOT supposed to tell me that, and in fact she is not scheduled for release until NEXT Thursday (the 19th)! That would be fine, except I rushed around like a mad woman trying to get everything ready for the big move to AL. I've already started paying for the AL to secure their apartment, etc. Oh well, it is what it is. So we tell my mom. I'm expecting her to be very upset, but she actually took it rather well. (Big sigh of relief) Tell my dad that we can postpone the move until next week for him as well, but he surprises us and says no he wants to go ahead and move tomorrow! So we will move my dad tomorrow. I will still take him to visit with my mom in rehab each day, and we will continue to plan to move her next week. I was surprised my dad wanted to go now, but after thinking about it I think the reason is that he thinks if he goes now and gets accustomed to things that he will be in a better position to help her when she arrives. They are so totally devoted to each other. Anyway, so there you have the update on the continuing saga of our lives. Someday soon things are going to settle down, and we'll just have ordinary days.

I have absolutely NO patience with those idiotic anti-vaccine proponents. How dare they put my grandchildren at risk?! If you are irresponsible enough to choose not to vaccinate your own child, then you should keep your child at home. Pay the cost of your stance. Don't put innocent children (and adults too for that matter) at risk because you are willing to gamble with your own child's life.
I can get on a real soap box rant about this.

{{HUGS}} nashville11 Sorry you have more roadblocks. Your dad sounds like a very loving man to want to get used to and prepare the place for your mom.

One can only hope!!!!!!.....I bet he cancels his press conference for tomorrow...🙃...I wonder how KellyAnne will be spinning this latest news...she will be earning her salary on this...The fact that McCain took the info that was given to him to the FBI besides the the info from the British Spy who first discovered it, makes me think they really do have something explosive. Gosh I sure hope so.
