This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year Olds board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Good morning all. I have a lunch appointment with someone to do some networking. He is a young guy, probably around my sons ages, who works in his father's insurance company, and handles insurance for one of my good clients. His office is not far from my house. Hopefully young couples will not stop buying houses if there is a change in the standard deduction. However, the change might more effect people in NY, Long Island specifically, because of our high taxes. They would still have more of a deduction because they can also deduct state income tax from federal. It might hurt the lower end market more where people have much smaller mortgages, and much lower taxes. However I have done a lot of loans lately for investment properties, and they say that the rental market could surge.
Enough about business. I posted later yesterday, so hope you go back to read. I finished The Whistler by John Grisham last night. I really got into it in the end, and it was good. I I have a book called The North Water, that was on some list, that came up over a week ago, so I don't have much time left. I am going to start it and hope to finish. It is short though, only 278 pages, so I might. Tomorrow I signed up to be the greeter at our Saturday morning service, so won't be home until after 12, but don't have much else planned for the weekend because of DH coming home after what I know is a tiring week for him, and the football playoffs. His flight is coming in at La Guardia at 4 pm. It was windy out this morning, so hopefully that dies down and it doesn't affect his flight. We are going to be in the 40's today, and all the snow has melted.

Robin - I will put The Whistler on my list. I like Grisham.
AP classes are offered through our school district as well, in fact dd took AP US History last year. They can't get credit for both AP and IB in the same subject. The difference is that in an AP class you study a full year, take the test at the end, and that score determines how the college looks at whether to give credit. IB is a full blown curriculum encompassing not just one class but a whole course load and including a class which ties the whole thing together and the curriculum is designed to promote critical thinking. As far as college credit is concerned, Students are evaluated throughout the 2-years of the class with tests and presentations so the whole thing is not riding on one test at the end, although the test at the end is pretty intense from what I have heard. DD is taking the full IB program so she will get an IB Diploma at the end and colleges will see that she opted to take the more rigorous curriculum and hopefully that will help her admissions. Students can take any number of IB classes, even just one, and the rest regular classes and they are awarded an IB Certificate.
No plans this weekend. Hopefully I'll get to the housecleaning I keep postponing. There is a swim meet tomorrow so dd will be gone all day and she is working Sunday afternoon so she will not be a distraction. And of course Sunday's playoff game (GO PACK!)

Hello all, I'm on the run today but I do have a question of interest to me. Our community just lost a beloved physician. I see in the obituary, and I'll quote, "the family will also observe Shiva at the home in the evening starting on January 16 through January 23". I would love to understand exactly what this is. Thanks in advance!

Good Friday the 13th.
Robin, I can start us tomorrow morning, enjoy your service as a greeter. Is your DH flying in tomorrow, or Sunday? About the playoffs...this is one that I am nervous about
Marsha, I meant to say something yesterday, and forgot...that is down right impressive, about having the student coming from Neenah!! Way to go Green Bay West! I hope he does great, with that program. Won't that be nice having DD gone most of the weekend? I truly love when DH is gone, don't like doing housework with him underfoot. Did you see where Jordy is not playing? I am glad...he needs to rest...especially IF we win Sunday...he will be better for the next step. GO PACK GO!!
Carol2, CONGRATULATIONS, on your anniversary with WW!!! I started with them in January of 09. My GOD!!! Where has the time gone??? I should be skinny by now!!!
Anngie...sorry, can't help you.
Busy day...geez, our workout at the Y earned me 7 Points Plus!!! ( ha, will probably burn them faster than I earned them!!) One of these days it will hit me and I will buckle down.
Did you all hear about the Kansas City Chief/Steeler game? They are expecting a major ice storm in the area, so I guess the NFL has a contingency in place, since with that ice storm, it could be epic, and no travel whatsoever will be allowed. They are not yet making it public as to what they would do, but my goodness, can you imagine if they had to change it to a different city? Yikes!
Well, DH and I just had a big fight about the heat. He is ALWAYS cold, and of course I am ALWAYS warm...he is mad that I have the heat set on 68...he is freezing, sitting in his chair watching TV. I do not want the heat turned up, because, our furnace is old, so I don't want it running too much, and my goodness, it is not real cold!! Oh well...we shall see how this turns out.

I heard about that Karen. I picked DH up this afternoon, so of course we had to listen to sports talk on the way home. They said the game was moved to an 8:20 start from 1:00. Not how that would help anything with an ice storm going on. I will have to go back and read what Marsha said, I must have missed something.
Marsha, in NY we have Regents diplomas, but not the same for sure. The regents are final exams that NY State has. To me, if you had a regents to take it was the easy way out, the teacher tests were always harder. More recently they say that have made them more difficult. My older DS got a 5 on the US History, so it surprised me when my younger one got a 4, because he was the one who was really brighter. He was a very top math/science student though, so racked up lots of 5's in Calculus and the sciences.
Anngie, the best way to describe shiva is that it is like a wake. Visitors will come to their home to pay their respects to the wife, any siblings of his that are still living, and his children. There is always lots of food, and it is customary to bring food, but really not necessary. I am sure that if he is a member of a local temple his friends from there will send food, and I am sure their close personal friends. When my DMIL died, we had so much food sent that the delis would call us and ask if we really wanted another cold cut platter, or something else, which was really very nice. They gave us whatever the dollar amount was in other food. What I do with my mah jongg friends, or another group of friends, is that if someone has a parent who passes away we chip in $20 each and send meals. The only thing to also tell you is not to send or bring flowers. I our community, we always do a short service at 8 pm at the home so that the mourners (the closer relatives I mentioned) can recite the memorial prayer. I will also tell you one of the things that I heard years ago at a sermon, people sometimes don't want to go for shiva because they don't know what to say. It isn't important what you say, it is just important that you are there. This is so true. More than that I can tell you who did come, I can tell you who didn't.

Karen, as far as the heat goes, with us it's the other way around. DH would like the house to be an igloo summer and winter. I turned the heat up to 68, am still cold, and am sure he is going to tell me it's too warm.

Robin , I did not hear that about the game...thanks for the heads up! Nice to hear DH and I aren't the only ones battling about the heat! It really ticks me off that I am so warm all the time, but there is nothing I can do about it. My parents were the same way, so I guess I inherited it from my mom.
