Yes Phyl, she could have broken it anyway. Yes, I agree, the puppy pads and litter boxes are unsanitary if a person doesn't keep after them but it just seems like an older person really is at risk when they live in an area like your's and mine and then has to take a dog out esp a new puppy. And if the puppy is trained also to a puppy pad then when you go out you wouldn't have to worry about them having an accident on your carpet or good furniture. You can't keep them in their crate for too long a period of time. All the dogs I've every had, once they were trained to go out they didn't seem to care if it was winter or summer. Anyway, like you , I don't want the expense of food, vets and all involved and I don't want the work. Don't want to have to pay for boarding if I want to take a trip. don't want a pet waking me too early or in the middle of the night. But that's just me. For sure I don't want to have to take a dog out when our wind is blasting like it does most of the time here.I cleaned up after people for over 40 years as a nurse.Sure don't want to do it now for an animal. As I said though, if someone has a pet and loves it and doesn't mind then that's what they should do. I would never try to force my opinion on anyone else. EVen if my dh wanted a pet, I'd get one for him and take care of it but it's just not something I'd do for myself. Luckily he doesn't want the hassle or expense either. OH and I also wouldn't want to clean up the messes if they were sick...the pet that is.People on various threads seem to always talk about their dogs and cats ear problems and anal gland problems, etc I don't think anyone wants to hear about those things. I took care of and saw all and any kind of bodily discharges in humans but I sure don't want to see or hear about them in animals.
The pink kitty fabric sounds pretty. They do have some nice fabric at Hobby Lobby.
Do your hearing aids have a volume control? Mine don't and I didn't think about it when I got them. The tech had a program on her computer that set the volume then there are four controls you can use ..one for phone, one for tv, and one for when you're in groups. I need to go back for a recheck. Then she can reset the volume because I'm sure my hearing has changed since I got them. She'll probably try to talk me into "trading them in" which I'm not going to do. They just cost way too much.

yes ruth I have volume control on mine. I KNOW SOME ARE FACTORY SET AND THE REP IS THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN ADJUS THEM. I WOULD NOT LIKE THAT.
if I Was going to get a pet it would be a cat. in winter our drive way can get very slippery. now days you don't know who could be out there. we don't have a fenced In yard. don never wanted one.
by early evening In cold months weather I am I n my pj's as soon as possible. like you I have seen it all. I was a nurse aid In my way younger life.phyl

Phyl, I don't have a fenced yard either. I have a huge yard but not even a small fenced are where I could let a dog out by itself. I was thinking a cat but then I visited my father in law a few years ago and he had three cats and after they started coughing up hairballs that did it for me. Then I remembered how they can destroy furniture, etc scratching at it.
Yes, Phyl sounds like you saw it all too. I was never one to pawn my work off on the aids. I was htere working right along with them and I learned plenty from the good aids.
I would not buy another set of hearing aids that didn't have a volume I could control.
And yes, I'm the same way as far as clothing. I'm in my nice warm jammies as much as possible. I do find that having such loose clothing sometimes make me a little lax on thinking about how my clothing is fitting but I'm sure that we both wear regular clothing enough to remind us to be careful of our eating too much. I see so many young women here out shopping and doing other errands in their pj's. Most are obese so I really keep in touch with how much and what I'm eating.
The only reason I would want to have a dog is if I lived alone I might actually get one just as a watchdog but it would probably actually be better and easier to get an alarm system.

Ok, As the Bible says "Ask and ye shall receive". I told my dil that they shouldn't be afraid to ask if there's something they want that's crocheted. So first of all, I didn't tell her that I was making my dgs a beard hat and she said that my son had just mentioned that morning that he wanted a beard hat and would ask me if I would make him one except he thought it would be too much work. She even explained to me what a beard hat was Then she started mentioning all the things the girls suggested I could make for them if I really wanted to make them things. So now I have a really long list and will keep busy for a long time. ON top of that I have my donate items to make and some baby things for my dgd that's having the baby in August so I need to stay away from playing the dumb games and get busy with crocheting. I still have the blankets for the grandboys born in Sept and Oct to finish the blanket edging for.She didn't mention anything she wanted. Do you think she is just shy about asking me because she's a dil or maybe there's nothing she does want. I'm leary about asking because I don't want her to feel that she has to want anything but on the other hand I don't want her to feel left out either. Since her own mother is deceased I'm the closest thing to a mother she has. I guess I'll ask.

Gotta be brief as I have to return to work.
Watched the inauguration this am..lovely ceremony.
CJ- glad you got into Joanns- even if just for fusible interfacing or webbing....gotta be ready for the next project! That's too bad about the candy canes- but I am sure you did a great job despite your dislike of one of the fabrics.
Ruth-I would sure think that you would need a good battery- especially as harsh as your winters can be!
Meg, glad the car repair is done- and getting those gaskets replace is typical for cars that are not driven all that much. Congrats on getting the 4th blanket done.
Got a little crochetting time in yesterday. MIL is still in hospital and should be released to rehab later. Hi to Phyl and Gail..... Ginny

Hello Crafters - hope you are all doing well today Ruth and Phyl - I've thought about getting another dog too (last one died in 1998), but I also don't want to have to worry about taking it out in the morning and night and dealing with it being sick. I do get lonely sometimes and would like the company, but not enough to deal with all the "other" stuff. Ginny - Glad you were able to get some crocheting in. Hope your MIL's release goes well. I heard some booming noises last evening and when I checked on TV, I realized it was the fireworks I was hearing from down in Washington, D.C. I only live about 15 miles from downtown. I finished the 5th quilt block today from the Soltisce quilt challenge and I did put the little applique basket in the middle. Every time I do any applique (which isn't very often), I always hope I'll like it more, since I think it's so pretty. But every time I do it I realize that I really don't enjoy applique I'm going to a quilt shop tomorrow to hopefully pick up some more of the fabrics I'm using for this quilt. I only had a fat quarter bundle and after 5 blocks the fabric is getting low, so I'm hoping I can pick up some more tomorrow since there are 20 or 21 more blocks to go. I'm also thinking about signing up for a two part beginning machine quilting class being held in February. I think that might push me to start machine quilting my quilts. Take care everyone!

CJ, yes pets can be good company but they also can be frustrating and aggravating.
A machine quilting class sounds like a great idea and great fun. I have to do the other classes first though of course but you already have the quilt tops mastered so that sounds perfect for you. I didn't realize you lived so close to Wash DC.
Ginny, good you got some crocheting time in. I hope your mil does well at rehab. I didn't watch the inaguration. I wasn't awake yet.I've been sleeping late now that it's winter.
Now I'm going to get started on the beard hat my ds wants. I started the new shawl last night but it doesn't have to be there till the middle of March and ds won't have a long time to use the beard hat because it's not all that cold where he lives and spring seems to come early.
"See" you all later

Ok, I generally get in my warm and fuzzy Pj's within an hour of being home from work- and that is at 4:45! So, Ruth and Phyl I am right there with you. But I do not nor would I wear my jammies out- except to go to the front to pick up the newspaper or get the cat in. IMO, pajamas are meant to be home in. Ruth, I would absolutely ask DGD about hand made items for her children. Better to ask and have her say no, than offend her by not asking.
My MIL is not doing well and has apparently got a cough/cold now. Not a good sign for someone in their 90's. So far, no sign of pneumonia.
Long tiring day. Good night! Ginny

Ruth, thanks for the link for the wall hanging.
CJ- wow you do live close to Washington! So, you still do not like appliqué! Bet it came out beautifully though- and its good to hear that you are making good progress on those quilt blocks. Enjoy your visit to the quilt shop tomorrow! And I think it's a great idea to sign up for those quilting classes....I am sure you will get some great tips to inspire you! Ginny

I got to check out that link for the adorable heart shaped note pad holder. It's so cute! Perfect time of year for it too- being heart shaped you could whip one up for Valentine's Day. Ruth, were they hard to make?
QUiet day so far...I am sure that will change as we make plans to visit MIL. Ginny

Ginny, I made one for my dil last year for her bday and I don't remember it being hard to make. It just takes a little time becuase basically it's two squares with one folded and then the heart "bumps" crocheted on, and you have to sew or crochet the squares together to get the pocket on but the one thing about it is that the notepad pocket is really small. It's super pretty but I don't know how useable it is to hold a notepad. It held a little pad of postit notes ok but a real notepad didn't work. I think if I made another I'd use a larger hook so that the pocket would be larger. And the question I had was about dil. I didn't know if I should ask her if she wanted something and make her feel like she had to, or If I didn't would she feel offended, so I did ask and I put a little smiley face there. So far she hasn't got back to me but it's Saturday and they do a lot with the kids on the weekend. Sunday is church, Sunday dinner, then church again, so I probably won't hear till Monday at earliest but that's the day they go to homeschool coop. She did give me a list of the things hte kids would like sometime. But dil's bday is in March too so if she wants something made I'd like to get started but I do have the grandaughter shawl for March bday too. I hope you're all having a great day doing what you like to do

Ginny, I'm sorry your mil isn't feeling well. Sadly at her age anything can happen as I'm sure you know. I've prayed for her and will continue.I hope she is prepared...you know what I mean

So I was right. My dil has taken the two older girls to see a live preformance of Sound of Music and she messaged me to tell me because they are using the money I sent for Christmas to do things like that with the kids. So today is the musical with those two girls. Then afterward they are going to dinner, just the three of them.
