Happy Monday to you too, Ginny, and to Meg, CJ, and Phyl also.
It's cold here today. Depending on where you look the temp is either 5 or 10. My thermometer says 13.Another day in the winter quarters.
I didn't get a whole lot of actual crocheting done last evening but did finish up the redone flap for the Bible cover, got the pen holder part done and started working on the notebook pocket. I need to decide on how to make the handles but I think I do have a plan.So if I don't get sidetracked I should at least get the parts done then comes the putting them all together.
I'm thankful for the food I made in advance because today now I won't have to do any cooking.
I pray that all of you have a good day and a good week.

Hello Crafters Phyl and Ruth - I like your new Valentine's Day avatars. I enjoyed watching the figure skating last night, there were some beautiful performances. I had 4 shows on at the same time that I wanted to watch. It's crazy how there are days and many hours in an evening where there is nothing on I can to see and then several on at the same time The rain finally stopped here this morning and it's sunny this afternoon, but colder in the 40s. I've been busy doing things around the house so I didn't get back to my quilting. I did try making some biscuits this morning - trying to use up the buttermilk before it goes bad. I made them too thin though so they tasted O.K., but they were a bit crunchy. I saw a recipe for buttermilk bread too, but I'm not sure I want to try that. Take care everyone!

Hi CJ. That's why I made the biscuits I made also...I needed to use the buttermilk. After I posted the recipe I used I realized that they might not turn out the same in ohter places because I live at a high altitude and things do turn out different. Also the ones I made with the gluten free flour turned out completely different than the ones I made with regular flour but I did use a recipe that was specifically for gluten free. I didn't try to make the same on just substituting flours.
I'm sorry it's colder there today CJ. I know you must have enjoyed the warmth yesterday. Spring can't come soon enough for me.I know Ginny doesn't like it too hot and I don't really either but I sure could use a little more warmth than we have now.
I'm working on the handle that I decided to use. I didn't want one that would pull on the stitches of the cover because the yarn that I used and the stitch I used make it a little delicate so I'm using one that goes around the whole cover...hard to explain.
Next will be a pair of fingerless gloves to go with ddil's hat then some fingerless gloves for dgd. She had emailed me awhile back asking what a good stitch would be to make fingerless gloves so I asked her the other day if she made them and she said she hadn't finished them because she liked the embroidery better than crocheting. So I'll make her the fingerless gloves. Now I just need to figure out what presents to actually buy for her. What do you get a 14 year old girl? I do have a nice necklace for her but I need a couple more things.

Good evening!
Survived a long day.....
CJ- thanks for the recipe tor Irish soda bread- or I should say recipes. I have to get my recipe out to see how it compares, I know we love it here and its moist as long as you do not overbake. The recipe I make calls for baking it in a cast iron pan too- so it works out best to cover it with foil so it does not brown too much or dry out. It sure stinks when there are so many good shows to watch on TV, then there are nights when there seems to be nothing to watch. The olympics are on 2 channels too- so last night we flipped between the two. Will you be watching the skiing and snowboarding tonight? You will get back to your quilting soon- sometimes its just a good idea to take a break.
Ruth, I totally get your discussion on where and how to attach the Bible handle, you are making complete sense.. I am sure the cover will come out great- once again I am impressed with those of you here (Meg too!) who can adapt patterns to permit a change in style. I cannot do that.... How sweet that DGD wants a pair of fingerless gloves....some thoughts on things to go with them- a pretty scarf (fabric, not knit), or a nice set of body spray and shower gel from Bath and Body works. (They have good sales, or you could even get the mini body sprays, they are 3 for $10.). Most young women that age like cute funky socks or even a mini purse (just big enough to carry a school ID and a few toiletries.)(. Dunnno- will let you know if I think of anything else.
Took the grandkids out today- just to run around in the yard- both grabbed their hats (made by me) and DGD has put her “order:” in for a larger hat as she has gotten bigger. Had my mini measuring tape with me, so I was able to measure their heads.... all set to add that to my project list!
Did not get much crochetting done there as DGS woke up from his nap early.
Hi to Meg and Phyl- G

Cj, I didn't see the recipes for the bread until just now. Thank you for posting them. And yes, it's awful when all good programs are on at the same time and, as you said, other nights there's nothing of interest. I sure agree with you and Ginny on that. That's probably really the only thing I like about having sattelite tv is that you can set to record. I would have loved to see the skating last night. I hear the American skater landed a triple axle. I would have loved to see that. I just saw the showing if it on the news. Ginny, taking the children outdoors has to be good exercise for you as well as for them. Maybe I need to have my dgs bring his little one over so I can chase him around It's also great that you can measure your grandchildren in order to gt the correct sizing on the items you make for them. I guess now I could email the two oldest of ds' daughters and have them measure their sisters and brothers. Never had much luck having ddil do it. She gets busy and forgets. I saw the cutest pattern for a little hooded cape today however it says it's for about a 3 year old but the woman who posted in comments said when she made it it turned out to be big enough for her 7 year old. So I don't really know what to think about that. Being that my youngest grandaughter is 6 I imagine she wears a size 6x so I could measure a hooded sweatshirt at walmart in that size as a guide. I took a break in crocheting to go up and clean my kitchen so the handle is coming along but it's pretty boring doing it and it has to be fairly long Ginny, thanks for the suggestions on gifts. I was thinking of something like that and some nail polish and remover. I also already have a cosmetic case with her initial on it to hold all those things which I almost forgot about until you mentioned it. and I'm going to send her a nice notebook because she likes to write poetry. Ok back to working on the handle. Have a great evening everyone and hopefully when I check back Meg will have posted or maybe Phyl

Good morning! Sorry to disappoint you Ruth, its just me back here again. So glad that I was able to spark your memory for ideas you already had for DGD. You have some great ideas all on your own. Think she would love a pretty notebook for journaling or writing poetry. WHat about a pretty pen to go with that? So sorry you are in the tedious portion of the Bible cover- that phase that is no longer exciting and seems to take forever to complete. (Was it CJ who posted something about that?). The other day on allfreecrochet I also saw the most adorable hooded scarves, I did save one of the instructions and will add it to my list of projects. Like I need another project. My Dd does not measure the kids heads either.....so I was glad I was able to do that yesterday.
DGS is here now and enjoying being with his best buddy- Dh. Think I was an ok substitute for Dh yesterday.
Got 2 more rows done on the baby afghan.. yes, it is also in that same category as Ruths bible cover- and is taking a long time. Its coming out well though.
Cool and sunny here today. Nice weather. Have a great day- Hi to CJ, Phyl and Meg G

Yes thank you so much Ginny for sparking my memory and thoughts. Yes I always send them nice and interesting pens. They have some great pens on Christian books and I got a great deal on some printed with their names so thank you for reminding me because I had forgotten about that pen. Since they were such a good price I ordered one for each of them and one for my two youngest grandchildren here. I finally found the place I want to take dh for an eye exam. Now to wait till he's ready for me to make the appointment. I do have the components of the Bible cover all made now so it's a matter of just putting them all together. The pattern for the cross was interesting. Long story but the writer of the pattern made it complicated so another woman simplified it but she said she'd never written a pattern before and you could tell. It sure was nice of her to do it though. So I just revised hers to make it even simpler and I used #3 thread and a small hook instead of the ww yarn that was called for in the pattern. Here is the link if anyone wants to look at it and you can see all the questions and revisions. I didn't put mine on there. scrapyarncrochet.blogspot.com/2011/06/free-yarn-cross-crochet-pattern.htmlAnd Ginny, I have no doubt at all that you could easily revise a pattern. For instance in doing the hats you sent me the pattern for, you could make the increase rows as usual then you could change colors every few rows, or you could make a band of a different color. Or you could change to a shell stitch in a few rows or a crossed or x stitch. It's really easy. And as for your project list, well who knows when you may have a lot of time on your hands and have time to make them all. And yes the picture of that cross makes it look complicated but it isn't at all Hello also to CJ, Phyl, and Meg...may you have a good and blessed day everyone

Hello everyone, I have had a lot of appointments in the past week but today is a free day. Tomorrow I have to get my taxes done. This is not a big deal for me but I am always glad to get it out of the was. The sun is shining today but it is cooler. I have been watching some of the Olympics and knitting just mindless knitting. I had some dental work done yesterday and I was tired the rest of the day. I kept falling asleep as I watched TV so I didn't get much knitting done last night.
Ruth, you posted 2 web sites for Irish soda bread. I checked out both recipes and the second recipe is the more traditional recipe that I am used to. Most of the recipes have been changed and have a lot of added ingredients that make it more like cake. Scones made in Ireland are different than the scones you buy or make here. They are also a very basic recipe and when I go home to Ireland I eat my fill of scones. For breakfast if you are frying bacon and eggs add a slice of soda bread and brown it in the frying pan. It's known as a heart attack on a plate but very good. I think I would like your crunchy biscuits. I do like things with a crunch. I understand how you are doing the handle for your bible cover and I would agree with you that is the best way to do it.
cj, I usually don't watch much TV but I have been watching the Olympics in the evenings. I haven't checked out your Soda bread recipes but I will go back and check them out. Happy Baking.
Ginny, I am glad you are having fun with your DGKs, everyone tells me it will keep me young but I am getting older rapidly. Enjoy them when you can as soon they will be off doing whatever. Your soda bread sounds a little more complicated but as long as it is eatable and you all enjoy it that's all that counts. The reason that the Irish soda bread recipe that is very basic is because back when soda bread was first made in Ireland the people were very poor and they would not have had the money to spend on all the ingredient that are now added. The very basic recipe tastes very good. If you want the wheat version use half reg. flour and half wheat flour. That is also very good. You do have good ideas for gifts y mind is usually a blank.
Hi Phyl, sorry I missed you.
I am beginning to dislike typing as I make so many mistakes which I have to correct and I am sure I miss a lot of them.
Have a good evening and enjoy the Olympics.

Hi Meg, great to see you. I'm sorry you've been so busy that it tired you out so much. I hope you get rested up. Being with the grandchildren here always tires me out and I'm sure ages me. They were always way too active and "busy" So being with them didn't make me younger or keep me young. Actually it was Ginny and CJ that posted the recipes. I do like the basic one and will try it when I get buttermilk again. One of the suggestions at the bottom was adding choc chips... That sounds terrible. I might add garlic and maybe some chipotle if I added anything...maybe some minced onions but for sure not choc chips.
Haven't got to crafting yet today. I made dh an apple pie. I figured I'd better get in all his favorite desserts before doctor visit...yes dumb thing to do but it works for him. He may have to change his eating habits a lot after the visit depending on what that blood result was...we still haven't heard so I guess we'll just wait till the appointment and find out then. And even then, he's an adult and has the right to decide for himself how he wants to take care of himself so all I'll do is let him know the risks and that I'd like for him to be around for awhile yet, and let him make the decisions

Good evening, Ruth the cross is very pretty- an element of it reminds me of granny squares, thanks for sharing the directions. I used to be a technical writer and know its an art to writing directions. Normally its a good idea to write them....and not read them again for a day or so. Then read them as though you are reading them for the first time and see if they make sense. I hope that sooner as opposed to later, you can get Dh’s blessing to get him to the eye doctor. Hopefully the doctor is not too far from home- easy to get an appointment with and get to. Eye care is important at any age, but even more important as we mature. But I am preaching to choir here.
Meg, my Irish soda bread recipe is more like the Americanized one. Yes, it makes sense that it was a more simple bread, knowing that the economy in Ireland was so poor then. Funny, the woman at work who considers herself so very Irish has a very Americanized Irish soda bread that she makes and brings in to work. Her recipe has raisins and caraway ... Do you ever make Irish Soda bread, and if so, would you share your recipe? Hope you enjoy watching the Olympics tonight. Congrats on getting do much done this week between your taxes and some dental work. Glad you were able to post today...I think we all look forward to your late evening posts.
My lack of sleep is catching up to me. Have a good night G

Ruth, I am sure Dh will love that apple pie! Agreed, he is an adult and will make the dietary changes as he sees fit to do so. I hope his blood work is good and that he chooses wisely in his dietary choices. G

Hi everyone, Just a quick post and then I am of to watch the Olympics and knit. I am not crocheting as I would probably make mistakes while watching TV.
Ginny, I have never have caraway seeds or chocolate in soda bread. I like the plain regular soda bread with lots of fresh butter. Adding raisins would be fine. I am not an authority on soda bread. My attempts at making it here were not great. In N. Ireland when I was growing up there were lots of bakery shops with delicious pastries, cakes and different types of breads. I don't have a favorite soda bread recipe but I think the one I mentioned in my last post probably would be good .I will try it when I have time. The problem for me with baking I would eat too much of it so I just don't bake very much.
Ruth, you can make regular milk into butter milk by adding a wee bit of vinegar and there is another one that also makes the milk sour. I did try it a long time ago when I didn't have any buttermilk and it worked. It probably was vinegar.
I am off to watch the Olympics. good night.

Good morning!
Yes, Meg- adding either lemon juice or vinegar to regular milk makes buttermilk for recipes. I do that all the time- if I do not have any of the powdered buttermilk In the house. My mom used to love Irish soda bread. I remember my dad bringing loaves of it home from “the city” (New York City) when I was a child, i never really liked it then. those Americanization- raisins and caraway ruined it for me. My mom loved caraway added to hers- and became upset if her Irish soda bread had none. THe recipe I use calls for both raisins and caraway- and I put small amounts of both in. I remember calculating out the points once- came up with something like 5 points a slice. WIth the new points system, who knows what it will be.
Just to vent a little- I wish WW would not change the points system so much. I understand what they do, but for those of us who have been around for a long time to have to recalculate every recipe every time WW changes is frustrating.. Enough bellyaching from me.
due to a short freezing rain system, we have a 2 hour delay. I will have to reschedule my hair appointment this am, but will still be able to make it to my doctors appointment later on.
Happy Valentine’s Day to those who celebrate it! G
