Good afternoon my friends. We just got home from rummaging at walmart and dollar store. I asked dh before we went what his plans were for the tents. He said he was going to donate them to the Boy Scouts or Boys and Girls club. Unfortunately there was only one left but we got it. Then there were some of the stainless steel insulated cups...40oz marked way down so got a bunch of those for gifts and donating too. At the dollar store got some little things for the "other gifts" for the grandchildren who's birthday it's not if you know what I mean....the extra gift I put in so that no one goes without a gift no matter who's birthday it is.I also found some REALLY nice kitchen towels. They usually have only cheapie thin ones or the microfiber and I really dislike the microfiber.. It never absorbs anything so they're useless for drying a dish or pan.Others have said they love them so maybe it's the way I wash and dry them that causes them to be non absorbent.
So now I'm going to do a little work and spend the rest of the day crocheting. Of course when I was in Walmart I had to pick up another skein of yarn that I thought would go great with that I bought yesterday and will use for the octopus hat. and then there was a nice color of Peaches 'n Cream so had to get that too of course.

Hello Crafters
Ruth - I'm glad you had a good trip to Walmart and found some things you were looking for. Yarn is always an important purchase
Ginny - I'm glad to hear the grandbaby and your DD are doing well, I'm sure it's an exciting time for all. Will you go over to see them this weekend?
Call the Midwife is a series about midwifes in London's East End/Dock area in the 1950s and 1960s. There are a group of nuns that are midwifes and other nurses work with them and live in the convent with them. Some of the stories over the years have been really tough to watch, the conditions in those times were terrible. But there have also been some wonderful stories and storylines with the main characters which have changed through the years. For anyone liking British shows, I'd recommend watching the whole series, you'd probably really want to start back with the first one (the one this year is Season 7). But you could try watching a few episodes and seeing if you like it.
I actually read the 3 books that were written by Jennifer Worth, one of the original midwifes in the 1950s, before watching the shows. These were some tough books to read, many stories are just heartbreaking, but there was a lot of hopeful stories too.
Meg and Phyl - Hope you are getting in some crafting.
I was looking at this Facebook page for Knit and Crochet Now today. Lots of pretty pictures. I think most of the patterns have to be paid for though:
www.facebook.com/KnitandCrochetNow/?fref=mentions
I haven't had as much leaking today and about 3/4ths of the snow is gone from the roof. Hopefully it will all be gone by tomorrow. I haven't been out of the house for a week so I'm hoping to get out tomorrow and don't think I'll have to worry about the ceiling while I'm gone.
I made some Sugar Free Strawberry Jello Applesauce today. I like it and it's low calorie and I guess maybe on WW Freestyle it might be 0 points. It only has the Jello Mix, water and Unsweetened Applesauce in it. If anyone wants the recipe, let me know.
I actually pulled out some hand quilting today and might try to do a little bit tonight once I finally sit on the couch.
Take care everyone!

I'm glad we went out fairly early because it's been raining now for about an hour. And you know what I said yesterday about it not leaking around the woodstove chimney? Well it's now leaking again. Didn't leak all last year.
CJ, after a week being home I know you're more than ready to go out
I'm going to make the pumpkin custard either today or tomorrow. The jello sounds intriguing. Yes I'd like the recipe..And thanks for posting the pumpkin one.How much does the pumpkin custard recipe make? Would you say maybe three custard cups full?
I looked at that site...the first one you posted.... very pretty
Just got back from looking at the knit and crochet page you posted the link for. They have some beautiful things but, yes, it does look as though they are all paid patterns.

Good morning!!
Opps! Sorry you are having a leak around your woodstove chiimney, and I hope that whatever needs to be done to repair it is easy.
CJ- yes I checked out that facebook page, yes there are some very very pretty things to crochet. Always nice to see what others are working on and the patterns that are out there. Usually someone on one of the free sites comes out with a similar pattern - is only a matter of time. I appreciate the info on Call the Midwife. Will have to check it out and see what channel its on....If its PBS i can probably get the earlier seasons at the library.
Heading to get my hair done this am and to help out Dd with the house/baby/kids.

Good morning everyone....CJ. Meg, Ginny, Phyl and all who just read.
Ginny, we did buy a collar thing to put around the chimney but it was not the right size and seemed to be the only size they sell. Dh refuses to hire anyone and I refuse to let him climb up there. He doesn't like heights and we have a very high house. He also has a vertigo problem. Didn't have ds look at it when he was here either because he doesn't like heights and just what we need is to have him fall off the roof and his 8 children left without a father or with a disabled father.DH still thinks he should be able to take care of everything himself but he can't. The good thing is that we don't often get rain and it leaks only in one spot and that is onto the tiles around the stove so we just put a towel there and it works. When it snows the snow melt never leaks thru there.
CJ I hope your roof and ceiling are ok. As I said yesterday I hope you can get that roofer back or another that will do a good job with both a temporary fix or when the insurance company is done, a more permanent good new roof.
Meg, I hope you're doing ok. Do you get to go see about replacement glasses soon?
Phyl, what have you been up to. How is Delona?
Aside from buying yarn I didn't get any crafting done yesterday after all. I hope to at least make a good start on the octopus hat. I can't start on the Bible covers yet as ddil, although she promised to do so, didn't send me the measurements yet.The kit for the Christmas tree skirt hasn't come yet either so can't work on that so since next Sunday is Easter and dgd may come from Montana I'll work on her hat and my dd's bday presents I will take over if we go on Easter.
And there's always tax. I ask the woman in the front of walmart that does people's taxes how much it costs to do simple tax... I don't have enough deductions to do long form...and I can certainly save a lot of money by doing exactly what she would do....the online tax

Hello Crafters Ruth - You probably get about 5-6 small custard cups of pudding. I usually use 3 larger 10 ounce Pyrex cups and the recipe fills all 3 of them. Hope you enjoy it. Ginny - Hope your haircut goes well and you enjoy the results. I went out today and ran a bunch of errands. The weather was nice so it was good to be out. I also saw one of my great-nephews at a Robotics Competition he was participating in. It's amazing what those teenagers can make and do with their robots. I stopped by a quilt store too and bought a few pieces of fabric in pink, brown and cream - Reproduction style fabrics. I might try to make a few of the Churn Dash blocks with these fabrics. Only had a little leaking yesterday and so far none today. Most of the snow is gone from the roof. I'll be glad to get some action next week. Here's the recipe for the Sugar Free Strawberry Jello ApplesauceIngredients:1 small box of Sugar Free Strawberry Jello Mix (.30 ounce box) - Raspberry works too 12 ounces of cold Unsweetened Applesauce - I usually buy those 6 pack of 4 ounce cups and use 3 of them 3/4 cup of boiling water Directions:1. Dissolve jello and boiling water for about 2 minutes or until mixed well 2. Add in the cold applesauce and stir to blend 3. Refrigerate for a few hours until the mixture firms up 4. Eat and enjoy

Thank you CJ, I have a lot of applesauce...those little cups....and I have the jello so all set to make it. Thank you for the info too about the custard. I'll put it into larger containers too as it's a healthy food so you can have more...pumpkin is very nutritious.
I'm glad you got out to do some things. And it's great you got to see your great nephew. Kids are so good at all that kind of thing.I'm also glad to hear no leaking today.
Took time out from the hat to change the bed and clean up the bedroom. Oops I forgot to get pillowcases for dh's pillows. Better go do that now before I forget. Then it will be back to hat making. Probably when I take the hat to my dd's house to dgd the others will want one too. She is the hat collector though but I think her sister that's just younger than her will definitely want one.
See you all later

Good evening!!
CJ- thanks for leaving the applesauce recipe! I enjoy applesauce and usually have plenty of that and SF jello in the house. Will have to give that a try tomorrow. Reproduction fabrics are so very very pretty!! My Dd (who has always had really good taste in fabric, her quilting teacher even told her that) made a quilt for me several years ago, all reproduction fabrics. Its gorgeous. Anyway, I cannot wait to hear about how you manage to make those churn dash blocks....I am sure they will be lovely, especially in those colors.
Ruth-My Dh also insists that he can still do everything in our home repairs....and well, I guess he can still do most of it, but perhaps its time for him to stop going up on a ladder very high up. I hear you, and understand how you feel. I hope that somehow you can have someone go up on the roof and see what the issue is, without that someone being Dh. Hope you can get your taxes done easily. Indeed, if you are using the standard deduction and have no other complicating factors, taxes are very easy to do yourself.
Got my hair cut (yay!) and stopped in to see Dd and the grandkids. The baby is so very sweet....and good to see Dd and the children.
Well, today I was very naughty. The “daily deal” at Missouri Star Quilt is a series of fabrics that I have been waiting for for a long time, so I ordered it. (Dd, the one with the good eye for fabric convinced me the time was right to place the order.). It should make a lovely quilt.....am looking forward to working on it!
Hope that Meg and Phyl are doing well Have a great evening Ginny

Ginny, its good to hear that you treated yourself and ordered the fabrics you've been waiting for so long to get. I know the quilt will be absolutely beautiful.
How does your dgs like having a newcomer in his home. I wondered that about my dgs too since he was born after 5 girls and was (so my son says anyway) a little spoiled. Ds says having a baby brother is fine with the now big brother. Guess he feels that now he has someone to boss around. His older brother is 14 years older and then there's all those sisters.

Interesting question Ruth. Dd thinks that perhaps, DGS is handling having a baby sister better than his older sister. Although Dd is very caring and loving with both her children, DGD has s bit more of the “center of attention” syndrome- and so having one more person to have to share being the center of attention with is difficult for her. Both she and DGD are caring and helpful at the moment, but DGS (who is 2 years younger than his sister) seems to understand that role a bit more. I know both kids are just very happy to have their mom home!
And yes for your DGS, not only does he now have someone he can boss around but he also has someone that he is older and wiser than! Up until his little sister was born (which seems like yesterday- its hard to believe that its been over 6 months!) he can care for and nurture her. Sounds like DGS has a caring heart.
Regarding my naughty purchase yesterday- well, I tried to get a similar fabric last year in the same color scheme and they were sold out. That is why this years version was so tempting- and all I needed was a gentle push from Dd. As a fellow quilter, she understands the quilting “bug”.
Dh is up.....will chat with him a bit and then get ready for church G

Hello all. I do hope everyone is having a good and enjoyable day. It's nice and sunny today but just a touch cooler than the past few days and "they" say it's to snow tomorrow. Dh is having one of his "tense" days. Every once in awhile he just gets really tense and hyper but these spells have been less frequent lately.Usually its due to trying to speak rationally to some online that he feels are misguided.I keep tellinng him that you can't chance anyone's mind who has their mind set on believing a certain thing. Just got the kitchen straightened up and will probably just crochet for the rest of the day.It usually doesn't take me much time to make a hat but yesterday I kept stopping to do other things. This octopus hat is actually made with two hats...one for the head and one for the body of the octopus. Then you make two eyeballs and two eyelids and I think seven tentacles that are made with two layers. Then theres the sewing them all together. I don't know exactly what I'm going to stuff the body with yet but I think I'll have to sew a cloth bag to put fiberfill in.IF I do it the way the designer of the pattern did. If I change to having the body of the octopus made with the half double crochet hat I think I can get away with just using fiberfill without it being in anything. The other hat that the designer used for the body is one that has a different design...she used shells and you could see the filling through the openings. So yes, now that I thought it over while typing here, that's what Ill do...just reverse hat placement. And I'm not going to use shells, I think maybe I'll used x stitch. So what are all of you up to today. Oh yes, my 4 year old grandson. Well actually he says sees his job as teaching his 4 month old baby brother things as the baby gets older. He actually likes him. I just sent them each a hot wheel car and told him he will have to help his baby brother with the car I can see your dgd's thoughts on that Ginny...she was the only girl..maybe if the baby had been a boy she wouldn't have minded so much.

Ruth, I enjoyed hearing about how your 4 yr old DGS enjoys teaching his little brother. Sounds adorable and gives him a chance to develp a nurturing side. Very very sweek. That Octoopus hat sounds complcated! I wonder it it was all intentional....and I am glad that you can change the pattern a bit to make it more manageable. Will pray for your Dh- to realx a bit and get over what his irritation over someone elses opiinion. I used to post on political boards, but for the most part found them to be frustrating. I am much happier chatting about yarn and fabric. G

The octopus hat came about because there was a person that was fascinated with octopii and showed a hat but no pattern. so the person telling this said she decided to try to design a pattern herself. It's not really complicated but it does have "parts". The way I found out about it is that dd posted a picture on facebook and tagged her dd to tell her how cute she would look in that hat and said" too bad your mother (meaning her) didnt know how to make those things. So I took that as a hint and posted that if dgd really wanted the hat I would make it for her. Dgd was very enthusiatic and said... " I would love, love, love it" so of course I have to make it for her. She's the only one in that family that thanks me for the gifts I give.
Yes being that there are 8 children in my ds' family, they are all nuturing. They all help one another with many things. It's nice to see.
thank you for the prayer for my dh. He is more relaxed now.
