Yowza!!! Hard to believe its another Monday and time to start us off for another week.
CJ- glad you got to the Robotic Competetion- even though this is the last time for your grandnephews. Still sounds like a fun time and you were able to share their interests with them. Did they have an entry?? (Think they will go on to study engineering or computer design in college?). I really really hope that you can find someone who will at least bandaid your roof. I know I am a bit pushy at times.....but if I were you I would try all different avenues. Your situation sounds like something a general handy man could at least stabilize for now.....Hope you find someone!!!
Got a little bit of crochetting done on a pair of fg I am making for a coworker. She has been wearing a pair that she paid $20 at a craft sale (are you smiling Ruth?). I have modified the pattern i got from Ruth (think it was a craftsy design) and am using regular red heart super saver in a lovely medium grey. Changed to a single crochet from a dc- and am winging it from there. So far, looks pretty good.
TIme to get some housework done. Cold here but nice weather. So nice to have the week off. Ginny

Good morning all. Its still morning here. Yes yesterday I was thinking the same thing...that today would be the start of yet another week. Praise God for the time He gives us.
It's cold here today and it snowed thru the night. There's a bit on the ground but roads are clear.Dh is making a fire in the woodstove but it doesn't seem to be going well. I always have to restrain myself from "helping".
Ginny, I didn't realize you had this week off. How nice that must be. Also, there you go...you said I was talented because I could modify patterns and you are also modifying. So we both are talented in that respect.. Yes I did laugh about the price she paid for those gloves. You probably remember that my dd's friend ask her if I could make her...the friend..a pair and somehow the sum of $10 came up. That would be way too little in my estimation but I would just make them for her for free as she is almost family. I did take a bunch of them to dd's house months ago but I didnt hear anymore about them so dont know if the friend even got a pair. All the dgds were there so I think that between dd and dgds the gloves were all claimed.
Well dh seems to have the fire going so now I can spend the day up here in nice warm comfort and just crochet all day. I have the two hats for the octopus hat done and started on one of the tentacles.I hope to get a lot of it done today then will put it all together maybe tomorrow. I did get the hand sanitizer and the mug the other day when we were out so I can make the "cozies" for them and will get those and the other things for my dd's bday wrapped and ready to take over whenever we go.
Dh seems much calmer and back to his usual self today. He didnt sleep well either and only for 3 hours so he'll be napping today. I think he drinks way too much coffee and caffeine is something that he would feel better in many respects if he just didn't have in his system.
Devin is off this week too so Meg has company. Your family is so fortunate to have you, Meg, in so many ways
CJ, I hope you have a good day and are successful in finding a solution to your leaking problem.Taking care of maintaining a home is a huge job and one I would be happier without having to do. I think if my dh leaves the earth before me I'll sell this house soon after and find an apartment where I wouldn't have to worry about repairing things and it would probably be somewhere near my son and his family. It would probably take me about a year to get everything cleared out. We have way too much stuff as I've mentioned. My ds has already said that he and his oldest son would help me move and Im sure the girls would happily help also.
Well going to go and get my other half cup of coffee and start my crocheting for the day.
See you all later

Good afternoon! Ruth, thanks for the reminder that Devin has the week off too! Duh, you think I would remind myself of that fact. I am so very glad to hear that Dh is in a better frame of mind. Indeed caffiene is a problem and can make some irritable. (Me it just makes hyper). Glad you are nice and comfy warm with a good fire going. The heat from a wood burner is so very even and nice. Warms to the bone- better than other heat sources. Do not know why however.
Sent a pic of the fg to my coworker- she seemed happy so I will proceed and get the thumbhole in and the cuff. Ruth you are so right, these are an easy pattern.
Hope everyone is having a good day G

Ginny, did you remember what the pattern is called yet? Yes this fire is wonderful. I had intended to have a lot of fires this winter but so far haven't had all that many. I wanted to use the wood before the termites eat it all. Neighbor discovered some in her house when remodeling a garage to make it into an office for their business and I worry that they'll get into my woodpile. she said she was having someone come over but I haven't seen anyone...that was in the summer. Guess I could have just missed them. Last week I ordered several size H and size I crochet hooks. They're the ones I use the most and I haven't been able to find an I anywhere in the house so I orderd several of each. Well just a little while ago I decided to take off the couch cushions and vacuum under there. It's a sleeper sofa. Well down under the mattress I found a while bunch of crochet hook and 3 or 4 of them were sizeI and a couple H so I'll have plenty of hooks from now on.and I'll know where to look if they're lost. I decided to make both hats for the octopus the same...just basic hdc hats. As I was looking thru patterns though I found a really nice hat pattern. It looks complicated and difficult so I started one just to see and no, it's easy and seems like it would go fast. Here's the link www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/divine-hat-2And yes dh was both irritable and hyper. He's relaxed today and is now taking a nap so I'm getting in my "me" time picture of octopus hat...not mine just a pic on the net

Oh my gosh, Ruth the octopus hat is adorable!! Looks like a boatload of work too, but its so darned cute. Love your story about the crochet hooks. Believe me I have done the same thing, bought H and I hooks because I thought I was somehow running out of them. Then, of course, I decided to clean out my crafting area, including the craft bags that I use to transport my projects in. Well, I did that and then found I had a boatload of hooks and a ton of H and I hooks. I gave as close as a full set as I could to each Dd and kept the rest here... as it is now I will be crochetting more than either of them. SO very glad that your Dh is in a better frame of mind. I guess the bad mood monster has travelled from where you live to New York- now my Dh is in a vile mood. Its been a tough night...thankfully he is watching TV now so the storm has passed.
A question for each of you....I still have 2 old cook books of my mom’s here. Actually I have more, but these two I really do not remember her using all that much. Perhaps my sister does but she does not want them. I do have my mom’s recipe box and cards and several other cookbooks that I do have memories of. My gut is to throw out these 2 cookbooks- neither are in good condition (and are of no value to a collector). Like I said, I do have other cookbooks of hers...just feel awfully guilty about throwing these out.
Hope everyone has a good night.... G

Hello Crafters
Ginny - The boys are in a club at their high school that builds a robot that competes against other robots from different schools. They didn't make it to the finals, but they did win some awards. Now they will go onto a Regional Competition and then maybe the National Competition.
Thanks for your thoughts on the roof. I have my appointment tomorrow morning with the roofing company and the insurance adjuster. I verified both today and reminded the roofers that I needed a tarp for the roof that is leaking. So hopefully they can put one on tomorrow or if not soon after.
I love cookbooks, so I might not be the best one to ask that question But if you have your mother's recipe cards and several other books that have more memories, I don't see why you'd need to keep the books that aren't in good condition.
Hope you enjoy your week off!
Ruth - That octopus hat looks very complicated, I give you a lot of credit for making that. Glad you are were able to enjoy a fire
I don't have nearly as many crochet hooks as you do, but when I started crocheting again a few years ago I made myself a case using this tutorial:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tZgCIEsEXs - I had the mini tumbler template, so it was pretty easy to make. I have to admit I was pretty proud of myself for making this since it was outside of my comfort level.
The weather was pretty nice here today, but cold. I went out and ran some errands and did grocery shopping. The appointment tomorrow is early in the morning, so I'll have to get up earlier just to be awake. I'm not a morning person
Take care everyone!

Ginny, I'm terribly sorry that the grump monster has moved your way. I hope your dear hubby will feel better very soon and tv cheers him up. Ginny one thing that someone told me once was to remember that the objects are not the person. if you do have her favorite recipes on cards and some of the books you do remember her using I'd go with tossing the ones that are not memorable ones. There is a recipe book that my mother had that also had belonged to her father. I'd sure like to have that but no one in my family seems to know what happened to it.
CJ, I'm glad the appointments are set up for the roof. I hope you get good news onwhat they ins company will allow and what the roofer will charge. Then I hope they do a good job and get a new roof on for you in a timely manner.
I don't know exactly how the picture of the hat got here but it's nice that you ladies dont have to go look for it. It does look complicated but it really isn't at all.Worst part of it is that you have to make two pieces for each tentacle so 16 pieces in all for just tentacles. They go fairly fast but it gets boring. I only have three done so far. I don't know why it's taking me so long.
CJ making a case for your crochet hooks is a great idea. I'm going to go to that site and look at it. I'm sure it's beautiful and isn't it a great feeling when we make something that is out of our comfort range and it turns out really nice? What a great feeling of accomplishment.
The robotics competition sounds like it's fun for the children involved and also for those watching it. I'm sure doing it teaches them a lot too.
Well time to get back to crocheting while watching Cooks vs Cons which I recorded. The company changed the list format so I accidentally erased two series of programs I recorded.

Good morning!
CJ- so very glad for your sanity sake that your contractor and the insurance adjuster are today! Not being an expert in this at all, but it makes sense that the insurance adjuster would also want something done immediately to assure no further damage to your home. Hope that this all comes together for you so that you can have repairs done as needed in a timely manner and get the insurance reimbursement too. I think its pretty special that your grandnephews will be going on to the regional competetion! Wishing the best for them in their creative endeavors and the competition too. Is that being held close to you and do you think you will attend?
During a round of insomnia last night I went and checked what was there for me to see on theDVR. I did have an episode of Call the Midwife....will have to view that sometime when I am more awake.
Ruth, the octopus looks so cool- but difficult. Yes, I would think that making 16 pieces for each tentacle is boring.....whoever gets that hat is one lucky kid!!
Thanks so much for the input on the cook books. THink this am I will go through them both and see if either has a recipe that I really think I need to save (more for my kids sake then myself) and if not, they will be discarded. After having gone through my mom’s jampacked house full of junk, I am very well aware that the stuff does not define a person and what they meant to you. I have many great memories of my mom- my kids to also- and we do not need these cookbooks to remember her by.
Hope everyone has a good day Ginny

Hello to all. It's after noon here now so can't say good morning. Jst got on the laptop and dh came up and has beeen "chatty" so haven't had a chance to post. Even now he's still talkig but I'm typing but listening and looking at him so he doesnt think I'm ignoring him. Nice day here, sunny but still a little cool..about 40
Cj I sure hope the roofer and the insurance adjuster have arrived and done their job.I think it's great also that your great nephews have won awards for their robots and I wish them well in the regional competition.
Ginny, that's what I did with my cookbooks...went thru and cut out any recipes that I thought I would use. Nowdays we can find many recipes for anything we want to make on the net so no need for cookbooks adding to our clutter. Now the ones with memories is a different story. . The book I spoke of was all handwritten recipes and as I said some written by my materal grandfather who died when I was about 4 so I definitely would have liked to have that.
Ginny, sorry you had insomnia last nigh but thankfully it wasn't on a night where you had to work in the morning.
The grandaughter I'm making the hat for is actually 23 years old. She has a 17 month old son so I saw some very cute crocheted little octopus so Im going to make him at least one of those so of course Ill also have to make some for his cousin...my oldest grandchild's (dgs) child who is a month older than this dggs.
Haven't got to my email yet as too distracted so will go there soon after dh goes to rest

Hello Crafters Ginny - I probably won't attend any more of the competitions, but I'm glad I was able to see the ones I did. I hope you like Call the Midwife. If you do, then you'll want to go back and watch the earlier seasons since it gives you a chance to know the characters (at least the ones that are still there from the beginning). You definitely have the right attitude that our memories don't have to be tied to an actual object - I wish I was better at that. Ruth - Hope you can make more progress today with your crocheting. I was surprised that the crochet hook case was not that difficult to make. I did have my appointment this morning and the insurance guy said he definitely thought I'd get money since there was so much damage. He has to file his report and then I should hear back from them in a few days. If approved, then I should get a check in about a week. Once I get that and contact the roofing company they will make an appointment with me to pick shingles and talk about the work on my roof. I would like to get a new gutter for part of the house. I told the roofing guy that I really need a tarp over the part of the roof where water is leaking in and he said he would contact his tarping guy about that today. If I don't hear from them by later tomorrow, I'll call again. We're supposed to get rain this week, so I'll be right back to dealing with the leaks again. This is all such a long process. I had to get up really early this morning, so I'm tired today and just relaxing. It will be nice to sleep late tomorrow morning. Take care everyone!

Hi CJ, I hope you get a good amount of money from the ins company to repair your roof. I also hope they weill tarp so you don't have to worry about the leaking.
Still haven't got to my email. Visiting dh then mailman came...usually they don't come to the house but he had a package for us that didn't fit the boxes. I'm so grateful because otherwise I'd have to drive to the other side of town to pick the package up. Then I had to play games with the cable company because of bill increase. (Internet and phone) Every year you have to call to get the price reduced. I'm sure you all remember me whinig about this last year. Now in another month I'll have to do the same with TV provider
So if anyone's emailed me I will get back to you soon

Good evening, We had friends over for pizza- always have a good time with them and it was nice to spend time with them. Helped the grumpies to leave my house, which is indeed a blessing.
Ruth, I think its adorable that you are making the octopus for your 23 yr old DGD!! How sweet- it sounds like you are making 3 octopus hats, that is a lot of tentacles!! Glad that your mailman saved you a trip across town by hand delivering that package. How big a box can your mail box hold? Knowing that you order a bit from amazon, I would think that it must be a fairly good size.
CJ-I agree with what Ruth said, lets hope that your insurance is generous with the settlement so that gutters and roof can be repaired!! Now hoping too that the tarp guy can secure the situation before further damage takes place....it would be nice if the insurance adjuster already made an allowance for addtional work so that he does not need to make a second trip to see the damage. Hope that you can sleep well tonight and sleep late!!!
Going to Christmas tree shops tomorrow am with my friend (the one who was just over this evening). Have not been out with just her in a long time- we usually have a lot of fun. I did get to work on a fg for a few minutes, because I am changing the stitch and hook size I need to take out 2 rows to adjust the stiches a bit. All in all its ok....and I think they are turning our well enough.
Tomorrow is garbage day for us....I wanted to make the decision on the cookbooks, which was surprisingly easy. The one was a good housekeeping- that it appears my mother bought a replacement for. I have kept the replacement (which is in good condition) and discarded the one that is falling apart. THe other cookbook, I just did not like the format of and realized that I would not use it. It had no special markings in if from my mom- like I said, I have her recipe box which is all her handrwriting.
Got some very sad news- Dd#1’s best friend, who got breast cancer before the age of 30- well the same cancer is back now in her chest. A PET scan next week will determine if it is localized or widespread. She and her Dh have a 3 year old child.Any prayers would be appreciated.
Kind of tired....see you tomorrow. Meg and Phyl we miss you! G

Just a very quick Hello to you all. It has been a busy 2 days. Devin is home but he is not much trouble. I just wish he had some friends but he is very good at keeping himself busy. The computer has been acting up and we may have to start looking at a new one. We all depend on the computer for lots of things and we would be lost without it. I have lost my cell phone and can't find it anywhere. I have finished one of my b/blankets and started another one. I am also still working at the one I am crocheting. I have also been doing a lot of reading. Tomorrow I will go and talk to the Dr. about my eye glassed. Tonight DS and his friend who also brought his mother went out to dinner. They are the family who lost her DH about a week ago. Another man joined us, his wife was off some where. We had a very nice time. We were neighbors years ago and the 3 guys were best friends during high school. I have read all your posts and I will try to check in tomorrow and catch up. I wish you all a good night.

Ginny, I'm glad you had a good time with your friends and will be going out with her tomorrow. Sounds like some nice activity during your week off. I'm so sorry to hear about your dd's friend. What a horrible thing to happen to one so young. I wonder if she has the BRCA gene mutation. One of my friends has it and has also had breast cancer twice but not at a very young age like your dd's friend. It also causes a person to be more likely to develop other cancers and can affect both males and females. Sounds like you made a good decision on the cookbooks. Meg, I'm glad you had a good time going out to dinner. I hope you get your glasses problem resoved. Sadly computers don't seem to last anywhere near the length of time we would hope to have them. I think you've had your's awhile now though if I remember correctly. Hopefully though the problem will straighten out so that you don't have to go to the expense of a new one and the trouble of becoming accustomed to a new one too. Ginny, no I'm just making one hat. The other things are just tiny stuffed octopuses... I just read about plural of octopus and it is actually Ocotpuses but also octopodes. The say many mistakenly use octopi as plural which is what I did because I thought that was correct. I was wrong. I also added the extra I. Guess it pays to actually look up things although I'm sure no one really cares I think that these next tentacles that have a popcorn stitch for the suction cups are going to take much longer than the plain part...the other 8. More on that story tomorrow...yarn problem see you then.

Good morning!
Meg- so glad you stopped in to say hello, we are happy to hear from you when you are able to visit. That’s right, I think car trouble kept you fom getting to the eye doctor the last time, so I really hope you can get to check out new glasses today. With all the crochetting you do, I would imagine its very frustrating not to see as well as you could. Glad that Devin is being good during break.Sounds like you had a lovely time out to dinner with Ds and his friends. I am sure it meant a lot to the family who just lost a loved one to be comforted by the company of old friends.
Ruth-gee< I always thought the plural of octopus was octopi! Thanks for the correction on that one.Good insight on the breast cancer gene- I do not think she carries it, and am not sure if she was tested for it. What I do know is that she has made very poor choices in her life- her diet is horrific (has been since childhood) and she probably weighs 350 pounds, at a height of 5’2”. She refuses to excercise (lives a safe 1/2 mile from her parents, what an easy walk that would be!)- and after the first round with breast cancer refused to take her health in her own hands by eating foods that might support the immune system or getting any excercise. Its so very sad... guess we will find out in a few days where this cancer is and if it has spread. (From the limited details I have gotten I believe it is in her chest somewhere....does not sound good to me). Would appreciate prayer.....
Rainy here this am. I hope to get out for a walk with Dh after my run to CTS. G
