i! Gorgeous weekend here, sunny, not too hot and not humid.
Joan, you just missed the good weather here on the east coast. Sounds like you had a jam packed but great time in NYC and got a lot of walking in.
Yes, I remember how noisy living there was, cars, sirens, honking, early garbage and delivery trucks.
I was lucky in grad school in NY, my room mate and I had subsidized student housing and we had a large 2 bedroom apartment with large eat in kitchen, living room and bathroom and even our own washer/dryer.
What a nightmare trip back home you had!
Holly, what is the shampoo/conditioner that you use?
Jojo, hope your breathing is back to normal by now with the medication.
This week I volunteered both Tues and Thurs. There is a woman who started volunteering a couple of months ago that went to my same culinary school, she is also older (but younger than me), but we were never in any of the same classes. We had lunch together after Thurs volunteering.
So our school is being shut down! I read that in the news. Enrollment has been down and they went public last year, it was just a matter of time I guess how long they could hang on. Most of my teachers have been there for many, many years.

Yes, Sue, I had noticed the ten day forecast and was a little sad that I had to leave—now the weather is really nice! Still, it’s good to experience that heat and know that you can still have a great time—was like functioning in a sauna—LOL!
Do you mean your culinary school is shutting down??
So cool that you keep up the volunteering and that you are running into others who had your same experience—nice way to connect and make friends.
I made watermelon gazpacho last night and it is so, so good! I just love it. There is a little left so will have that with a forbidden rice bowl tonight. Yesterday I was in kitchen literally all day—cleaning herbs for drying, roasting beets, making an awesome sauce to put on our portobello burgers last night—it is lite mayo, tons of fresh basil chopped, garlic clove, and a squeeze of lemon—omg it just is perfect with the mushroom and arugula and onion on the flat bun—tried a flat bun and liked it so much more as not so overrun with bread. Had DD and DGS14 over for dinner. So thankful that DH will eat this way with me.
I am still on a bit of jet lag—hope to wake up earlier tomorrow and Not feel the afternoon droop. It’s so weird to wake up hungry—
Did lots of yard work in the morning yesterday as it was overcast—I think we are starting a week working up to our monsoon season—which is only about a week or so of slightly higher humidity until it finally rains. I fertilized, transplanted some basil into shady areas, cut oregano, jalapeños, Serrano’s tomatoes and picked the remainder of the beets. Weeded and pulled out all the old kale. I have a ton of tomatoes that are new—they won’t get as big in this level of heat but they are still sweet and tasty. Am going to have to make another tom basil soup and freeze some. I tried one clove of my own garlic yesterday in the sauce I made—oh my gosh, homegrown garlic is so full of juice it actually drips when you cut it.
Sue, have you roasted garlic in the oven before? How did you do it if so? I’d like to try it with one of these and spread it on some good bread with our dinner but have never done it—only had it in a restaurant or two.

Hi all,
Today’s one of those Fall teasers. Low humidity and temps. Enjoying it while it lasts.
Higher education is struggling in general. Hard to keep up with the changing nature of jobs and technology. Not to mention tuition.
I am getting some grape tomatoes finally, along with some cherry tomatoes. Still haven’t seen any cucumbers.
Sue, the shampoo/conditioner is called Crazy Smooth.

Holly, the price of school is literally getting beyond reasonable—regular people cannot get a job that pays enough to pay back the loans that college requires. Is enrollment down at your school?
Today was a special day—I went to my body sculpt class for the first time in over 3 months—and I did all of it and I’m not hurting! Also did my dance class—-it felt so good to do both! Made me feel like life was getting back to normal!
I roasted three bulbs of my home grown garlic tonight—we had a couple slices of baguette with some roasted garlic—OMG, it was so mild and so good! I took all the cloves out and stored them in the freezer for future use. I have two more bulbs—now that I realize I can do this and freeze the cloves I am going to grow more next year—it would make such a nice mild garlic flavoring in all kinds of foods.
I roasted all my cherry tomatoes and a few larger ones today for tomato basil soup—will actually make it tomorrow. Tonight I made beet greens with sauteed mushrooms and onions and garlic and a sprinkle of red pepper—was so good with orange vinegar from TJ’s. I baked some wild salmon for DH and tried to eat a small amount but honestly I think I’m losing my taste for meat and maybe even fish—I took a bite and didn’t want any more. Kind of hope that is not the case as I had not planned on giving up salmon completely. But it was almost an aversion—sort of weird.

Sorry I have been out of touch for so long. I have had my DGK's since Thurs. night - had some family drama here. DDIL is in the hospital, had EKG changes from BP med, Prozac, and migraine med. They have adjusted meds but EkG is still not quite right so kiddos are still here. I have had all 3 until yesterday the other grandmother came and got the 12 yo grand daughter. I have really gotten more activity and stepclimbing in and my washer and dryer have been buzzing, Once thing is that I have been sleeping great at night from being worn out during the day. So glad that I started on the Brio for my lungs - I seem to have so much more energy.
When it cools down later today I hope to get outside and do some yard work.
Holly - finished my first shawlette. Was definely not perfect, but had a little lace work too. I took some matching regular thread and made corrections after it was finished with the regular needle and thread. doesn't look too bad!
I am still having some digestive issues but I think it will just take some more time. It is better.

JoAnne, glad to hear you are okay—hope your DIL does okay with some med changes. It is amazing how much more capable we are of doing physical things when there is a demand for it—like little kids—and we don’t notice the things that bother us because we are distracted and simply do what we need to do.
So what is Brio==is it an inhaler? Why do they think your lungs are having an issue after this surgery? Is it all related?
I did pilates today and skipped the gentle yoga to have coffee with a gym friend whose 31 year old autistic daughter got hired by Starbucks and it’s her second week of work. She was so surprised to see us—she is so proud and Starbucks is treating her so well. She is not high functioning but is a sweetheart—and LOVES order so they have her in charge of keeping all the products on the shelves and counter organized and cleaned up—her mom’s so happy as it is the perfect job for her! Making 13$ an hour and gets a share of tip jar—she is ecstatic! She lives in an apartment complex with other autistic kids—well, adults.
Had a good rainstorm last night so temps dropped so much this morning it felt beautiful out!

Hi! Volunteered yesterday. This is the last week that the woman who also went to my school iis volunteering so a few others took her out to lunch after our shift. It was fun but not used to drinking beer in the afternoon. She is from S Korea and will do some traveling in the US before going to Guatamala to volunteer at youth shelter for 6 months. A new guy came with us to lunch, he started/owned a city newspaper here, sold it in the 90s. Interesting guy.
Joan, yes my culinary school is shutting down, the entire school is. Watermelon gazpacho sounds good!
Jojo, glad your energy is back. Hope your DIL feels better soon.
Lazy day today, gym, farmers market, and tonight will go to a PAC cocktails party for the state legislature by one of my friends in our condo. SO didn't want to go so I'm bringing a young friend with me. I usually don't do this type of thing but with the way things are I feel the need.

Hi all—loving the monsoon season in Vegas—-OMG, got up at 5:30 and walked halfway to DD’s and then we met and walked to the new Peet’s coffee for morning coffee—it was slightly overcast and in the high 70’s—slight breeze—just awesome. And the humidity felt good on my skin. So got about 3 miles walk in before going to the gym for pilates—found that I am back to leg circles like before0–just feeling so normal again! Had housecleaning today so now the place looks awesome—and it’s getting ready to storm—yay! I have an appt. with the dental implant guy to see if the infection is totally gone—if so have to make an appt at dr. Afterward. Then a trip to Target and home—breeze is coming up now so thinking I may be coming home in the rain if lucky.
Went out for dinner at Flower CHild—a vegetarian/vegan choice restaurant here—it’s a chain—for DD’s 46th birthday last night—DGS17 was supposed to come—called and lied about having to work—did not show. Yet the phone =tracker showed he was at home at his dad’s—probably stoned—ugh—he won’t give it up. So frustrated.
DSIL from SAC came as he is here helping his mom who still is not fully recovered from the terrible heart surgery nearly two months ago.

Walked at 6 again today and yesterday—today DH actually went with me. We had coffee before heading back—he thought it was muggy but it felt good to me—-I think NY just made it all relative—and I love the cool slightly humid air on my skin! Also went to dance and weights class. I have been hitting 15,000 steps a day this week by doing both the walking and gym—feels good.
On strike from cooking tonight. No idea where we will eat.
Going to see Won’t You Be My Neighbor tomorrow afternoon and taking DD and the two DGS’s—was surprised they were willing to go=they leave on Sunday for the Canada fishing trip with their dad—he is so disinterested in them he doesn’t even care if they are with him Sat. Night before leaving on Sunday morning! The absentee father—this week in Canada will be the most DGS14 has seen him all year long—more than he’s seen him collectively all year so far! Isn’t that pathetic.
I mixed up gluten free salted peanut butter cookies and have the scoops in the freezer so will bake them tomorrow— I bake them straight out of freezer. DH loves them.
DGD17 had her final class and is packing up tonight —just hoping they make it to their train on time to get to Newark tomorrow morning! It will be a test for them!
I am very tired—may need to get to bed earlier tonight!

Hi!
The PAC event was interesting, I signed up to get newsletter and will contribute some money. Afterwards my young friend and I went to the new sushi/ramen restaurant down the block for dinner. It was fun.
Thurs, I was on the bus on my way to volunteering when I started texting Arleen, the woman who went to my culinary school, she told me she just left the place where we volunteer and on her way to see our chef/teacher at the school. It was slow at the volunteer place anyway, so I decided to join her. It was great to see chef and I went around and saw my baking/pastry/dessert chef too. On our way out, purely by coincidence, I saw 2 of my classmates who I started school with. They didn't know the other was coming either. One of them and older student like me, was an EMT with a wife and 2 daughters. He started his own restaurant 4 months ago! Excited for him! Hope it does well.
Today SO and I went for late lunch/early dinner at my sister's. She, my BIL and my youngest nephew are leaving tomorrow 1am flight, for a 2 week trip to China and my mom wanted us all to get together before they leave and do takeout so my sister wouldn't have to cook since they were leaving tonight for the airport.
Joan, you seem to be doing a lot of exercising now. Glad your body is feeling up to it.
Jojo, have you seen the tv series Nashville? It's kind of country soap opera but I like the singing and you get caught up with the story lines.
Starting to get hot/muggy around here again.

Wow, Sue, how fun to sort of have a reunion before the school closes! You were all thinking the same thing! Has your youngest nephew been to China before? Do you and your sister and parents speak Chinese when together? Have you been back to China within the past few years? Any desire to go? What region is your family from?

Hi all,
This summer is going way too fast. So much to do before the semester starts. I am happy with the way things are headed with the new changes, but things will certainly be different.
HelloFresh has delivered some really good meals lately. They include a vegetarian option, so I have given them a try. Tonight I had black bean tacos with avocado and roasted sweet potatoes. They also have meals with Israeli cous cous. I like it a lot better than regular cous cous.
Sue, are you still wanting to try catering? When does the school close?

Umm—that sounds good in a taco, Holly! I did stir fry tonight and had DD over (the DGS’s are in Canada fishing for their annual trip with XSIL—
DH isn’t crazy about sweet potatoes which makes it hard as they are so good with so many vegetarian dishes.
Sue, DD loved my stir fry and wanted to know what I used—told her you had referred me to using hoisin in things a few years ago.
Did a lot of exercise today—body sculpt, treadmill, and dance.
Went to our neighbor’s dad’s memorial service this afternoon.
DGD17 had all wisdom teeth out today—such a yukky thing for kids to have to do.

Worked all day yesterday and today I the front yard. So very hot! Had to come inside periodically and rest, cool off, and drink 💦.
Joan- Brio is similar to Advair- a low dose steroid and other ingredient. It is a controller drug (versus a rescue drug like Albuterol). I had stopped the Advair when I retired because it was so expensive and the interim insurance I had ,before I started Medicare, would not cover it. I thought I was doing well and could get along with out it. Obviously I should not have discontinued it. Also this is high allergy season for me and my asthma is strongly related to allergies.
Making a new shawl/scarf- black and white.
DH feeling better since the kids are gone and we are back to our routine meals and not trying to eat to satisfy their whims.
No Sue, haven’t seen Nashville- will check it out. Started watching Yellowstone tonight- a new series.
Yesterday out on the front porch and was stung by a wasp. Really hurt! Probably haven’t been stung by any thing like that in 25 years. Dabbed it with alcohol and then put Aloe on it. The Aloe really helped. Never could find a nest and don’t know why it was around me. It stung my lower leg, my ankle.
Bought some Xmas presents to put away yesterday and the day before in the Amazon Prime day. Also bought a couple of tops for my self.
Joan- 15,000 steps/ day is really good! Keep it up! Wish I was doing half of that.

Good to hear you are okay, JoAnne. I used to take Advair—for about a year—DD is on it permanently.
Had a little surprise dinner out at her favorite restaurant tonight with one of her best friends and her boyfriend who flew in from Florida today—she thought they were just going out to eat—we had a cake I made for her with candles—she was very surprised—her friend works with her—is another therapist. THey have known each other as therapist colleagues ever since her first job in 1998. Was fun.
Very hot here today—so I walked at the gym on treadmill—not my favorite but better than not walking. Did regular yoga finally and weights today. Got my h. Aides cleaned and serviced today—and got a lecture for not coming in more often—have to admit the sound is stronger so guess they were really in need of service.
Tomorrow night we are going to the opening of a clay arts group that my yoga friend belongs to—she has three items in in—-she and her DH were two of the people we saw Trevor Noah with. They have been in Oregon for the past several weeks so will be fun to see them again.
I started tracking again today on My Fitness Pal—I just don’t do well not looking at the cumulative amount of what I eat. Already felt more ability to not grab something. I have bumped up a couple pounds and hate it—just eating too much even though it’s good stuff—also have been grabbing some sweets the past few days—ugh—always my challenge—
This Russian thing is so scary—
