We are a group of like-minded people that gather to discuss a host of topics from weight loss, to current events. Our thread celebrates liberal diversity, welcomes new friends, and respects all opinions. We count everything from calories to points but, we never count our chickens before they are hatched.

"Let's run the clock back to 1933 . . ." Hayden said. "And in 1933, what did we see in Germany? A cult of personality, a cult of nationalism, a cult of grievance, a press operation that looked like and was the ministry of propaganda and then the punishing of marginalized groups." -- Gen. Michael Hayden, Director of NSA under Presidents Bush and Clinton
Does the statement above sound familiar?

I'm glad to see some prominent Republicans standing up to take a stand against what is happening with the zero tolerance policy this administration is enforcing. Even Melania's office gave a public comment. But it's sad to see that there are so FEW Republicans standing up. Republicans have the power right now, and the JA could stop this with a single phone call but instead he puts it into play, the Republicans follow meekly along while covering their eyes and closing their ears, and the JA tries to blame it on the Democrats. Well JA, you did this. This is your policy, so own it. And those Republicans who are following along, how do you look at yourself in the mirror? Remember all those Germans who were only following orders? You're not even following an order. You're simply refusing to take a stand.

Well, despite this horrible, shameful, despicable Immigration Policy with seperating families, I have to admit I had a good giggle over something a pundit said on a political show. They said, JA would never dream of separating Canadian children from their families like they do for those coming up from southern border. Mainly because JA would be too much of a wimp to face off with PM of Canada. ( Which is true) ...I just started laughing because what Candian families want to immigrant to the US...LOL...My gosh, if things really get bad, many Americans may be immigrating to Canada. LOL...

I do think the situation is awful for the families, but the blame also goes to the people coming in illegally.
There's legal phrase "if not for.." In this case, if not for the fact that the adults are committing a crime, then the children would not be in this position.
We can blame the US government for not having a better policy in place, but they are not 100% of the problem.

I guess I don't think that most these adults, are committing a crime in the normal sense of the meaning. Most are risking everything they have to escape horrible conditions we lucky Americans really don't understand since we don't live it. Yes, there needs to be senisible laws, but sometimes common sense & heart needs to come before a law or made up policy that harms children & parents just looking for safty & a better life. And which ever party uses kids as a bargaining tool should be kicked to the curb.

DotRen , I can see your stance to a point with illegals, but a large portion of these immigrants have not broken any law. They turned themselves in at the border seeking asylum. That's not against the law, so they are perfectly law abiding. Yet, nevertheless, we are perpetrating this atrocity on them. And even if the parents did come in illegally, the children are innocent victims here yet we are punishing them in such a way that a great many of them will likely be scarred for life. Can you imagine being 4 years old, ripped from your parents, put into a place where you know no one, you don't understand the language all around you, and you feel utterly alone? It would be traumatizing for an adult let alone a child. As the wife of an immigrant perhaps this hits closer to home for me, but I just can't see any justification that can possibly make this right. I've lived in both Texas and California, and certainly illegal immigration is a serious problem not only for border states but for us all. Immigration reform and secure borders are needed. I appreciate your opinion, but for me this all boils down to one thing. Are we behaving in a humane way? Are we upholding what I have always believed America stood for, that we were the "good" guys ready to lend a hand to those less fortunate? When I look at this policy, I'm sorry, but I see it as completely unacceptable, and I truly am ashamed for my country to be behaving in such a way. We don't have to agree. Surely the world would be a boring place if we were all always in agreement, so I hope I haven't offended you, DotRen , I just see this very differently.

nashville11, Not offended at all! After all, we should be able to have a civil discussion I was born and raised in a little town on the border in the Rio Grande Valley. I swear, we had more migrant workers kids than US citizens in my school lol. And no criminals, no rapists, etc. Just kids here because their parents/families worked here during the week. We had a wonderful woman we called Lala when we were little, she would come in once a week and cook, clean, do laundry, etc. She was making money to send to her family in Matamoros while her husband and son were here working the fields and orchards as migrant workers. She worked her butt off, too. She had 5 different families she worked for during the week. *She* wasn't here legally, but at that time it wasn't a big deal. I don't know what the status of her husband and son were because most of the migrant workers had no papers because it wasn't necessary back then. I did read that they *try* to locate family members that are here legally to place the children with, and I pray that is true.

DotRen, glad I didn't offend you. Pat, sexual predators are something that has concerned me about this situation as well. These children are so very vulnerable. I just can't bear to think about what they must be going through. And parents who were so desperate to save their children from the dangers they faced in their homeland that they are willing to risk their lives to get their children to safety, and then we place them in ever more danger. I understand needing secure borders, and that these parents must be checked to ensure what and who they are. My own husband had to spend about three months in a detention center in Germany. It wasn't pleasant, but he understood the need. So if the parents need to be detained while this is all figured out, why can't the children be kept with the parents? I can't see any reason for separating the children from the parents other than as a fear tactic. Even Homeland Security admits this is not working. I just can't accept that my country would deliberately do such a thing. It makes me feel literally sick.

Until this evening I don't think I had ever heard of Any Kemer. Listening to her on Erin Burnett tonight, I don't think I have ever wanted to slap someone so much in my life.

I am sick to death about infants and children being separated from their parents. The long term damage being done to these children is beyond description.
I blame Trump for the separation of parents and children and every president before him for not clearing up the immigration mess. Now it's crisis management with ulterior motives to distract the voting public.
Good for Laura Bush for speaking out. I expected Michelle and Hillary to do so.
