Hi!
Appliance guy was here and fixed our refrigerator leaking problem. Our drip pan was cracked from taking it out and putting it back (SO taped it up), so the guy is coming back next week with a new pan.
Volunteered yesterday, told everyone I would be gone for 2 months so they don't think something bad happened to me.
Hi Holly, Jojo!
Joan, we fly out Sat 13, hoping to meet up with an ex colleague who lives in Santa Monica area. We depart on ship after the weekend on Mon. We'll have wifi on ship, but limited hours since SO refuses to pay for unlimited for the trip, so annoying. When we reach the next level of days of travel we'll get elite status and get unlimited. Good for you DH for walking. I would keep it quiet for now.
Weather has been pretty nice here finally, no rains and sunny, not too humid. Monday night the woman who I met at my volunteer place and who also went to my same culinary school came over, met SO, and she and I went out to sushi restaurant for dinner. It was so nice to see her, she has been traveling on the west coast the past month and this morning left for 6 month volunteering at an orphanage in Guatemala. Hope she will be safe, have heard of how dangerous it is there lately.
Not much going on, gym every day. Lost about 5 lbs, even with going out Monday night. I manipulated my diet by switching days on night I went out and had crudo, sashimi, salad, Brussels sprouts, with a cheat of a couple bites of soba noodles with shrimp and 2 sips of sake.

Has anyone tried those sweet potato noodles? They look like soba noodles in a wet pack? I bought some but have not tried using them yet. Someone at the gym uses them all the time.

Wow, woke up to fall this morningâ60Âș at 8 am and windy and cloudyâsitting here trying to decide whether I want to walk for a second cup of coffeeâI want to but my body doesnât feel very willing. I should because I took my day off yesterdayâhad some reoccurring back pain so was a bit Leary about exerciseâused my tens unit several times and took 3 advil last night so I slept well and feel much betterâjust not sure.
Yesterday I didnât do much other than bake my two loaves of bread and make a beet saladânew recipe out of Moosewood recipes: Vegetables I Canât Live Without. A friend loaned it to meâwow this was a beet/orange/fennel salad and it is very yummy! First time I have used fennel. I like it but had no recipes that called for it. I have about a pound of salad so tonight will take some to the neighbors who asked us to dinner.
I also made green bean amandine out of the book for dinner on Friday night at BFâ S Everyone loved themâjust chopped almonds and garlic slow roasted in some butter and oilâthem mix in the steamed beansâadd kosher saltâbut they were really tastyâthat extra garlic and the toasty taste of the beans was really nice.
All her recipes sound goodâI might order this used from Amazonâmy friendâs is used and itâs like newâ$5.
Holly are you still in PT or done? Is your neck pain better?
Sue I hope your weather isnât yucky for your crossing the Pacificâdo you worry about that? I guess you are mostly cruising in Southern Hemisphere tho, huh?
JoAnne, how are you feeling?
DGD18 in NY now knows for sure she is gluten intolerantâwhen I sent her a dozen biscotti she had stomach crampsâhad some regular pastaâsame thingâreally quite bad I guess. So no more goodies unless they are gluten free. I am mailing her some gluten free Halloween socks for her next treat! LOL. Seriouslyâbought some cute cat ones. She is doing okâshe had a rougher week last week as she was depressedâthat time of month for her is really hard as she has always had PMS pretty bad. Just like her mom. But now she seems back up and herself again. Itâs hard for me not to worry about her all the timeâsomething about being further away and on your own and Iâve always been a worry wort.
DH turned on the heater mats for the catsâthey each have one in their favorite spots for winter monthsâfunny how they immediately head to it but in the spring when it starts getting warmer they donât go to them at all. They know.

Hi all,
Joan, yes, I am still doing PT. I feel stronger. When I started covering the Reference Desk for the semester, it created a new issue with extremely tight muscles in my neck on the right side. Repetitive motion with the mouse. I am using bands, stretches, and a tennis ball at home.
So ready for the weather to cool down later this week. Doesnât feel right wearing shorts and the air on in October.

The sweet potato noodles sound good Joan . Let us know how they turn out if you find some. I have ât Seen any on the grocery store.
Joan congratulations on all the walking you have done. I havenât been consistent with mine. You are an inspiration for me. I am committed to to do better now.
Sue you leave for your trip a week before we go to California.
Holly- Iâm still making socks. I am determined to perfect them. Wouldnât want to give away any I have made yet. They are ok for me but not a gift- too many mistakes.
Iâm doing better . The GI upsets seem to be episodic. Leaving off all milk products has helped but has been very tough. I have found some acceptable substitutes but nothing can really replace the half and half in my coffee. I am using a coconut milk creamer now. I use Earth Balance instead of butter and that is ok. The substitute cheese are not very good but ok too. He told me not even to eat my Greek yogurt. I am complying because I want to get better but UGH!
I worked in the yard today clearing some brush in a wooded area in the front- still have a lot to do in that area. The Ivy is taking over!
Tomorrow is washing and ironing day for me. I really have a lot piled up.
Will start remodel on my master bath and closets after Thanksgiving. The contractor was here Friday about it all. Excited to get it started.

JoAnn, I have quit using butterâam using ghee which I am liking better than butterâread about it on the internetâit is very good for youâhas all the bad of dairy out of it. I love it for sautĂ©ingâit doesnât burn like butter and it smells so good sautĂ©ing. You can get it in most storesâTJâs has small jars of it.
Your GI still giving you troublesâmy back is acting up! Geez, I was feeling like such a completely healthy personânow am using my tens unit oftenâalso doing some stretches on the floor with bands at nightâalso body rollerâskipped body sculpt and pilates as I was afraid I might irritate it further. I did still walk todayâmid morning since I didnât go to the gym. I love walking and am beginning to anticipate itâtoday I stopped and stretched my calves over and overâthey may be part of the problemâthey tighten up if you walk too much without stretching. My left foot has often threatened plantar fasciitis and was a bit inclined that way today so really stretching my foot as well. Isnât there always something!!
Holly, Iâm glad the PT is helpingâit is amazing how repetitive motion and computer screen stuff and sitting can mess us up.. I am no longer sitting to watch tvâjust put my yoga mat down and sit on the roller or lie on it. Sitting is brutal for my back.
Did I tell you our cr. Cd. Got hacked againâsomeone charged a ton of Uber on it in LAâChase forgave us a bunch of them and issued a new cardâyesterday I sat for three hours straight and another hour this morning changing card numbers on all the autopays. But today the bill came and it looks as tho they missed about six more charges they didnât refund to usâso have to call them again. Someone was running all over CA! Big charges. Like 30 to 60 $ and one for over a hundredâthat was what triggered Chase to shut down the card and call us.
Sue, youâll soon be on the pacific!
A friend of mine lives in Fla panhandleâhope she gets to high ground but itâs not sounding like sheâs evacuating. She failed to get gas for her generatorâhope she got some this afternoon in time! Her husband died last yearâwill be her first riding out a hurricane alone.

Hi!
Wow this last week is going by fast! Went to see my parents on Sunday, my sister was there too, so it was good to hang out with her for awhile. Saturday I got my keratin treatment.
Tues was volunteer day, said goodbye to everyone.
Jojo, Joan, can't believe you guys are still not completely back to 100% healthy/pain free. It has been so long. Please take care!
Jojo, do you have to avoid dairy forever, or is it temporary? How exciting to get a new master bath! How long will it take?
Joan, how was the party for Jordan, was it a big success? Sometimes when you are so sore, it is ok to take a break from exercise! I used to make a carrot potato puree soup from Moosewood, it was soooo good. That was in grad school. I don't know anything about sweet potato soba. You can make clarified butter, isn't that almost the same as ghee? I am a little worried about the weather and hurricanes, but the captains are really good about avoiding and going around bad weather.
Holly, glad the PT is helping. Are you getting any rain from Michael?
Today, final errands, refrig guy came to check on our leak problem, he's convinced we'll be fine. I have our lobby receptionist to come in once in a while to check in on our unit and she will call the appliance guy if there is a problem. Got my gel manicure and regular pedicure. Had my 2 neighbor couples come by for goodbye glass of wine and gave them everything that was left in my refrigerator. Tomorrow is packing all day.
So lost 8+ lbs on the diet. Feels so good and I fit so much better into my clothes. Today, I introduced a little more carbs and some wine but still tried to keep with more protein.

Sue, Jordanâs bâday party turned out just greatâ28 kids were here for most of the afternoon and eveningâstarted at 2 and we took Jordan home at 11 that nightâlast kid left at 10:45âthey were the nicest kids everâI had about 8 or 10 of them around the island and at the counters helping to put dinner together the last hour before servingâwas so funâit was incredible to see a group of. 18 year olds who donât need party to mean beer and drugsâno one going out to their carsâjust having funâthey played four way Mario Kart on our big tv, they played with a Chinese puzzle I have with big boulder marblesâkept score to see who was smartestâplayed a card game called exploding kittensâwatched Youtube videos of penguins in a zoo (DH got them hooked on that-LOL), went to the park and played volleyball with no netâcame back hungry again. So yes, it was a big successâ-everyone promised they would come back for a grad party in the spring! I think Jordan really loved it.
Stayed home from walking and gym and stayed on advil every four hours yesterdayâwill do same today except for Sit and Fit which is senior weights class. Used tens unit a lot.
Made a creamy cashew sauce over spiral sweet potatoes and spinach last nightâ-was really yummy. Its veganâthe cashew sauce is just cashews and garlic and waterâ-wow, itâs delicious.
Iâm going to search for that carrot soup out of Moosewood. I also made cr of broccoli soup yesterday. Today I get my hair cut and I think my gray will be showing in most areasânot sure how I will lookâwish I could just skip to gray.
GDG18 in NY has lost quite a lot of weightâhoping she is still eating healthilyâAiley does not want emancipated people according to DD so I think they will keep a watch on her. They are all about muscles. She always carried more weight than she wanted so am hoping she just has managed her snacking and discovered real food calories are betterâalways a worry though with dancers.
DD in CA is going to visit DS in SLC this weekendâfirst time sheâs ever just gone to visit him aloneâmakes me feel good as a mom. Their bio dadâs mom, grandmother in Florida, turned 103 this weekâsheâs really got longevity genes and is healthy and not suffering dementia.
Subaru keeps sending us gifts in the mailâwe had three in the past four daysâreally nice things, not junky. I guess it is because this car is a brand new model so we are like charter owners or something!
Got my Ebay food processor base/motor yesterdayâOMG it is like newâ-with shipping I spent $49 and now itâs like my whole processor is brand new! Was so good to have it back in working condition! My first ever purchase on EBay and was a perfect result.

Joan - soooosorry to hear about your credit card. What a pain! I thought ghee was clarified butter- donât think I can use that either. The party sounded like s lot of good clean fun! Good to know there Re good kids left in the world. You were so generous to do the party!
Sue- I am not sure about how long I will have to stay off milk products. If that is the culprit, I guess forever. Ugh. So much to miss! I am feeling a lot better and doing everything I want to but I am beginning to think that I will always have GI issues.
Hi Holly- hope you fared ok with the storm. My sister in Greensboro has been without power sinceThursday and is told she will be until next Tuesday! We just had a lot of rain and downed tree limbs. I spent yesterday and this morning cleaning up the yard. Still have to get branches cut up and bagged.
The bathroom and master closets will take a month to six weeks to complete. We will have to move into the guest room. He will build all the drawers and cabinets for the closets and the vanity for the bathroom. My shower will be larger and have a built in bench. He will also build cubbies for towels. Tile the walls half way up& redo my walls. I already have a new toilet and LED lighting. He will tile the floor. My master bath is VERY small and the idea is to maximize the space. Same with my closets in the master bedroom. I am also taking up the carpet in the bedroom and putting down hardwood. Since we are gone 2 weeks this month and are having company a week at Thanksgiving, he will start after Thanksgiving.

Good morning everyoneâimagining that you are in LA today, Sue? Bon Voyage! I hope you enjoy the timeâwe will miss youâknow you will catch up when you can!
JoAnne, my DD is off all dairy and was told to only use gheeâsame with son with concussionsâyou might ask you gastro doc about itâI believe in itâs clarified form all the dairy lactose related stuff is gone.
Also, what about getting a scobyâa starter for kumboucha and make it every couple weeks and drink about 8 to 12 oz a dayâit is full of healthful helpful microorganisms that the gut lovesâyou might see a differenceâitâs more effective than taking probiotics in small amt in foods and with no yogurts you must be low on probiotics in your diet possibly?
We are headed out to breakfast with cruise bfâsâ-we only see them about once a month now and only brieflyâthey stay here about a week out of every sixâshe is still attached to JDRF or I think they would let this apt go and be only in Florida.
Busy day out todayâgoing to the LV dance choreographers Showcaseâput on by NV Ballet and local cirque du soleil volunteersâit is always just spectacular. Then tonight we see Waitress at the Smith Centerâbroadway musical.
Got out of bed at 4:30 and wrote in my journal and readâcouldnât get back to sleepâworrying about DGD18 in NYâshe is procrastinating on signing and reserving her room from Jan and âclaims â she and a friend are finding a place but she might be on the street if they donât get on with itâif you ask about it, she doesnât want to talk. Hoping she is just trying to be independent and everything is okayâugh! I just am a worry about things person!
Itâs in the high 50âs this morningâcooling down.
Hair is starting to go grayâit is showing through kind of like my cat Tanziâs two layered color! LOL
Lori Rosalie has lost 20 pounds just tracking the old WW programâshe tried the new and said it just didnât fit with herâshe is looking really good. Her oldest turned two yesterday. Time just keeps flying on by.
Holly, how is the person who had the heart attack? Back at work? Everything smooth at work with the changes?

Hi all,
Finally feeling like fall here. Jo Anne, oh no! We got about the same here...short period of heavy rain and limbs down.
I am working on an ear warmer/headband. Knitting in the round is not hard. I just have to pay more attention.
Joan, it is tough Iâm sure. I canât imagine living in NYC that young. Heâs coming back part time this week, then resumes full time after that. Weâre all trying to work through the changes still and address some issues that have been lingering in the background. I feel like Iâm back in the area of the library that I have more experience in, so that is good.

Hi!
I spent all day organizing and packing Friday, took longer than I thought it would - was exhausted when finished at around 7pm. Then had do last load of laundry and final dishes so that I don't have anything dirty around.
My second nephew lives in the city and his gf visiting from nyc drove us to the airport Sat morning at 8am. He gets up at 5:30 every morning for reverse commute to work in the suburbs so this was sleeping in a little for him. He took our car to my sister's after dropping us off, so she'll have it for the next 2 months and drive it every once in a while. One less thing for me to worry about.
Flight was uneventful. Got in touch with old work colleague who had moved out here about 5 yrs ago. We went out to dinner with him and his BF last night. It was so great to see him. When we first started after grad school we were the young kids in the office.
So yesterday we walked 2 hours after we settled into our hotel room. Today we were out for about 5 hours and walked most of it, except for a stop at a cafe for breakfast and coffee. My feet are hurting! But great exercise!
Joan, I would worry about a young 18yr DGD in nyc too! It's slightly different from a college atmosphere where she would be surrounded by kids her age, living in a dorm, going to classes and lots of chaperones. What a pain with the credit card hack! I would freak out. Does your DGS still keep in touch with Jordan? It seemed like they were such good friends before.
Jojo, is this the last of your home renovations? You always have so much yard work to do!
Holly, glad work is going well for you!
Well, we walked by some houses today that SO had been looking at for years on the internet, some have sold already. Thank god, he realizes that the location of these is not ideal for the way we live. The houses are gorgeous, very modern the way we like it, but neighboring houses are uninspiring and too close, as is the case for most neighborhoods in LA. Our hotel is in Santa Monica and we were looking around here and in Venice.
Tonight, we'll just go to the hotel bar for drinks and snacks. Tomorrow we board!

Hi, Sueâyouâre so much closer but still so far! Has your SO ever looked in Lagunaâit is such an artist community. Or Carmel, CA.
You really walked a lot today! Do the cruise ships leave out of Santa Monica area?
DGS17 did not come to Jordanâs partyâwas invited. He doesnât want to be around us since we do not want him bringing drugs with him to the beach and donât want him stoned at dinners. It is sad but maybe someday he will grow in to understanding. None of the party kids acted stoned, none went out to their cars and came back inâall were totally fine with DH and I being here for the partyâwe didnât hover but we were not locked awayâvery visible and present.
Nice that your sister can keep the car moving occasionally as it is not good to have a car just sitting.
Iâm thinking this cold weather is going to hit back east soonâit was snowing in SLC, Colorado, Montana and in Minneapolis, MN today. Hope DD has mailed DGD18âs winter clothes to her! Yes I worryâwithout the umbrella of a school âcampusâ it is a bit disconcerting. She has texted me a couple times today so thatâs good.

Went to gentle yoga todayâdid not walk except for about 7 min on the treadmill because I was early to class.
Yesterday had my impressions and temp for the one implantâ2 hours cause they had some troubleâhad to cut down my outside gums and cauterizeânow today I get a call and they feel the impressions were not good enoughâwaitâthis is my perfect dentist who doesnât make stupid mistakesâwhy didnât they evaluate this while I was there and frozenânow I have to do it all again and it was pretty brutal. I am not a happy camperâI just said I would call back and make an appt but honestly I am just so depressed to think of this all over again! Have to calm myself down before I call cause Iâm not feeling too happy about this.
Last night we had forbidden rice bowlsâDH doesnât love the forbidden rice so I made a precooked package of seven grains rice mixâhe loved it. Personally I love having this dinnerâhad pickled ginger, carmelized onion, sauteed mushrooms, purple yams, delicate squash rings, and avocado on mineâ-I think I could eat it daily.
Today I bought a better tasting powder protein supplementâmade of peas, bean and lentils with some vanilla flavoringâorganic and âcleanâ and it made my smoothie so much better tasting and still 15 g of protein just from the powder.
Have to get busy and finish my bookâThe 100 Year Old Man who Climbed out the Window and Disappeared. Itâs funnyâlike a Forrest Gump of the world from Sweden.
Finally got last monthâs book club summary out to everyone todayâtook me forever as I summed up all ten books people read.

I made up my own recipe for dinner last night and it turned out really yummyâit was black bean rotini pasta (TJâs) with white button and baby Bella mushrooms and spinach in a cashew sauceâso mad cause I usually take a picture but didnâtâit was really filling and very tasty. The pasta is black and has nothing but black bean flour in itâno preservatives or chemicalsâ15 g of fiber and 15 g of protein per 3/4 cup! Then the sauce is just cashews and water and garlic so it is high protein as well. Mushrooms are high protein also. I couldnât eat all of mine as it is very filling so have a bit for lunch today! DH liked it alsoâI had told him he could order a pizza in if he hated it but he said heâd eat it again! Yayâone more vegetarian meal for my list!
