Happy Saturday to all. I was thinking this morning that gaining an understanding of my desire to overeat has been as much a journey of self discovery as it has been an effort to develop self discipline. Sometimes it really is one day at a time for me, too. I applaud all of you for keeping at it and maintaining your losses! I am coming up on 6 years of maintaining a 50 pound loss and I feel like I have beaten the odds as well. We should feel good about our successes and celebrate ourselves whenever we are tempted to only focus on what we would like to be better at.

Colleen, reading your post was such an uplifting and hopeful way for me to start my day. Thank you. 6 years maintaining is awesome and 50 lbs is a really impressive number of pounds gone. I keep losing the same 25 over and over again, although it's been years now since I've lost all of them. It feels different this time, I'm in it for the long haul. I'm down 12 pounds at WI this morning, halfway back to my lifetime goal (which I've raised a couple of times over the years). But I know I will be eating pretty much exactly the way I am now when I finally get there, and it's just the hard reality of it. But the payoff is so great and I'm already reaping the rewards of that.
I will come back later and post another Beck paragraph, need to go out now and won't be back until later this afternoon. Have a great day all.

Happy Saturday all!
I do believe this is a lifetime commitment and while we can eat something off plan once in awhile yes I agree this will be how I will be eating the rest of my life.
Not much planned for today.I am thinking of going to Curves and DH may go to Anytime Fitness to strengthen his stroke affected arm while I'm there. We need to go to HEB and WM and if the wind isn't too bad this afternoon I hope to get another walk in.I plan to stay OP today and track.
Have a great Saturday all!

Today I am struck when reading the posts realizing so called "normal eaters" eat like this all the time. Somehow my wires got mixed up and food became more than food to me. Congratulations on lifetime and maintenance of lifetime to all who are there and approaching that goal. I am still in the basement fiddling with the wires!! Marie

Good morning everyone! I lost 40 pounds last year, but maintaining, as usual, is a challenge. Old habits die hard. I step on the scale every morning, I go up 2 pounds, then down 2 pounds. I need to get back into super disciplined weight loss mode, or things could get ugly here. I've set my points back to 30 and shall not stray. Today I have knitting guild meeting in the morning, lunch out at an undecided restaurant, and told my husband I'd attempt baked potato soup for dinner since potatoes were on sale, 10 pounds for 99 cents last week, so I had to buy them. I will have a small bowl and nothing else for dinner or before bedtime. I will keep my fingers busy with knitting so that they're not putting food in my my mouth.
Have a great weekend everyone!

I've maintained a 50 pound loss for 3 1/2 years and what I've really learned from this journey is I will be eating this way for the rest of my life. The benefits of a healthy weight are more evident as I've gotten older. Some days seem easier than others but the habits I've developed help.
There is a famous quote of Mickey Mantle that fits well here: "If I knew I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself".

linda72,I like your attitude and WTG in maintaining for that long. I also saw a quote that said "Motivation is what gets you there and habit will keep you there." Here's to good habits for all of us!

Great posts this morning. I have been maintaining an 80 pound lost for nine years. I also understand that this is the way I will be eating for the rest of my life. Sometimes I remind myself that the food world around me (restaurant servings, junk food, people who overeat and encourage eating) is what is out of step not me. When I first did WW 25 years ago I remember telling myself as I tracked that the results were amazing since all I had to do was keep track of my food. At that point I hadn't hit the struggles of keeping up the weight losing habits to keep the weight off. So glad I got my act together at age 59.
People are always looking for the "magic pill, fix, product" to lose their weight and we have it. It involves work, time, energy, and effort but we have the results we want.
***I could use some topic suggestions.

G'day... enjoying the posts today. I've only been back to Lifetime (earned in the 90's and won & lost many times since) for 4 months now. I'm fighting to stay at the goal weight with 2 lbs gained and loss throughout the month (fortunately it seems to always be "lost" near the first weigh-in). I have not moved my 30SP allowance higher for fear of gaining. It's enough right now to figure out what I can do on a daily basis to keep me "in range".
This is my first attempt at reading the BeckBook and following "some" of the ideas. I find I'm resistant to many! But for now I'm letting those things that "fit" become a part of my daily living. Will work on what a can do rather than worry about what I can't! There's always 'round two' !!

Happy Saturday everyone. Today's comments are the sort that we all need reminding of on a weekly basis. We all seem to lament in some way that "this is the way we will have to eat for the rest of our lives" as if it's a bad thing on some level. I think the reality is that very few people can eat whatever they want and remain thin for life. I think we're just adjusting our eating and exercising habits to a level that allows us to be healthier and hopefully a bit thinner/more in shape. That said, I am also down in the basement with mariel, fiddling with my wiring...and sometimes I get a shock here and there, but most of the time, it pays off in the end because the wiring becomes neater and more streamlined to my life.
bbbearsmom/Judy, you asked for topics, may I suggest we create a thread under Beck called "Discussion Topics" and we can just add them there whenever we think of one? And that thread can be a catch all for topic ideas when needed?

Pat: One reason I was interested in doing the reviews is because I am not a good student. It is beyond me to sit down and go through a book like Beck and really study it and do the exercises, but reviewing it three times a year does allow me to learn what I need to do. I fought "no choice" for years and still remember when it finally sunk in that yes "no choice" was right. I don't use "no choice" I mentally use "yes, this is what you have to do." Anyway I think taking Beck is bits and pieces is fine. I know if I had tried to force myself to be strict with myself it would not have worked. Although it is true the more work you put in the better the results.
Also a nice thing about this thread and the reviews is we get to hear the views and experiences of others and that often leads to learning at least on my part.
Congrats on being back at goal.

I just added some topics from Beck's blue book, The Diet Trap Solution, to the new thread. I'm a newbie at this so my guess is you've all been through these before - pretty much everyone here seems to be a long time maintainer and you guys are immensely inspiring. But for me I could really use a review of the basic concepts and to hear how you implement them, or don't, in your daily lives. There's a saying in OA - If you want what I have, do what I do. I want to lose the weight, finally, again, and maintain the loss, so for me I want to do what you maintainers do.
I had trouble with Beck's original book. I don't remember specifically what set me off on a rebellious mission, but I really did not like the "no choice" thing that Judy mentions, and interestingly, she doesn't say that at all in her latest book. Maybe others rebelled the way I did. Altogether it was way too much tough love for me. I think the concepts are the same in the second book, and the focus is really on problem solving, which I found very useful. And there's more explanation, along with vignettes from people doing this approach, that made it seem so much more accessible to me and user friendly. But I could be in a whole different developmental place right now and maybe the original book wouldn't aggravate me now the way it did when I first read it.

bbbearsmom,That is fantastic you have maintained an 80 lb loss for 9 years. In the past I have never been able to maintain any kind of loss.I'm still not quite to where I want to try to be able to maintain a certain weight but I'm close enough to feel it.It's been a long struggle but I realize the struggle will never be over. The one person I know that can eat anything they want and not gain weight is my DH.Sometimes it's frustrating seeing him eat what he wants and not have to be concerned about calories, points or carbs but other than his stroke he is completely healthy. I want to be able to say that I'm healthy the rest of my life too so I never question what he eats.I'm not even jealous of what he can eat b/c I realize if I ate what he does I would gain and I don't want that.I have never asked him to give up any kind of food just b/c I have been dieting. He does like to eat out at fast food places too often for my tastes but I have gotten to where I will finally go with him and order a grilled chicken salad and most of the time eat 1/2 or 3/4 of it if it's a bigger salad. That is something I can do for me and I'm happy he enjoys his Whataburger patty melt while I enjoy my salad.I just keep thinking about all the carbs in that burger I'm missing.
