I would love to discuss Pachinko, too. I think the underlying motivation for the book, the progress of the plot/relationships is the serious tension in Korean/Japanese relationships. No Korean is a first class citizen in the eyes of the Japanese, at least not in the era of this book. The Pachinko parlors are prolific in Japan and the only acceptable job in the era of the book, for a Korean in Japan is running a Pachinko parlor.
A friend dropped off a copy of a book entitled What would Virginia Woolf Do? by Virginia Lorez Collins. It is sort of a silly book about aging and how we make our choices in clothing, activities, etc. It is entertaining in spots. I will probably skim through it and return it.
