Ginny, I wouldn't want to go to the service either but it's great you're going to be there for your dh.I'll be praying. That sure is a lot of snow.We don't get thaat much snow very often here.
When I showed my dh that I pulled out most of the shawl I told him about how you tried a couple patterns then went back to tried and true. He's always after me to give up or settle for less than perfect. I told him you said I must be patient and that I told you I wasn't, that I was just stubborn. He said, yes, you're right about that.Anyway I found that the problem is that when this woman who designed this pattern says dc or sc or whatever in the first stitch, she doesn't really mean the first stitch. you have to start in the second stitch.I've seen that in other patterns too. Now it's working great. I thought it was a different problem. Finally figured it out and now it's fine. Gotta go get back to it.
Have a good evening everyone.

Good morning!!
Ruth, I am so happy for you figuring out the problem with the pattern! Yes, I have seen that where in the world of crochet things are implied ( like starting the second crochet from the hook). You had the perserverance to figure out the quirks of the pattern and I am sure the shawl is going to look great! For me, between working and the personal issues (which were un predicted) I would have not had the time to get the bugs out of the pattern. Falling back on old tried and true had to work for me. I am really Happy for you that you got the pattern to work!
Yes, I am actually resenting going to the service for my MIL. (Ladies forgive me for venting here) This was such a complicated issue- and she was such a difficult person. I think my DBIL - who has now returned to his home- was fortunate in that he came up for a few days to see her one last time and now does not have to endure a day of ceremony for a person who was so difficult to be with.
It's cold here- well cold by my standards, 17 degrees. That cold that our one cat who goes out has not even gone to the door to "ask" to go out. I have off today, Dh and I are running some errands and Dd will be coming home later from college for the service for MIL.
I got a little more time in on the afghan. Think I will go spend some time with Leslie Sansone now before Dh wakes up. Ginny

Ginny, feel free to vent any time. If you don't want to vent here feel free to email me. I'll be praying for acceptance and peace for you since you know you will go for your dh's sake. These things are not easy but the Lord will be with you.Yes the bil sure got off easy.
As for the pattern, well that didn't work either so I'm having to improvise as I go along. It will take longer this way but I'll get it done and it is beautiful. It's on the Red Heart yarn site so there's nowhere to ask questions of the designer. Some rows you DO go into the first stitch.I should be writing down what I did as I go along in case I want to make this again but that would add even more time so hopefully no other grands will ask for this particular shawl.
And I do think you were smart to use a pattern you know and know will work. When you have limited time to do something you want it to turn out right the first time. It's not a time for experimenting. My dil always tells me not to worry about getting the kids gifts there in time because if they are late the child gets to have a second birthday with the gifts from us.
It's very warm here today...57 right now and the wind has calmed some. It won't last though but I'll enjoy while I can and when it snows again I can look at it out the window.

Hello Crafters Ginny - I hope things went well at the ceremony. You DH is fortunate to have you to support him. That is a lot of snow and cold. Hope your weather gets milder soon. Ruth - I'm glad you are working your way through the shawl. I've found some patterns difficut to understand and not written well. And for a beginner like me, that can be frustrating. Meg and Phyl - Hope you are doing well. I went to another quilt store today and found the 12" and 6" combined Log Cabin Trim Two Tool ruler, so I bought that. I'm not sure what colors I want to do a Log Cabin quilt in, but with this process you can use scraps and I have lots of strips already cut so I'll definitely start with those. The good thing about this ruler is you don't have to accurately cut strips before you start. As long as they are a little wider than needed, you will trim off the excess by using the ruler. I also bought one spool of 50 weight thread, to try when I do some machine quilting. I looked for some batting, but I already had the type they were selling. I'm proud to say that I didn't buy any fabric It was cold here today, but supposed to be around 60 tomorrow - strange weather! Take care everyone.

Wow, no one has posted since I did yeserday! I usuallly have several posts to read. I hope you are all doing well today. I worked on another diamond in the Lone Star quilt today and now I've finished 4 of them, 4 more to do. I also played around with the Log Cabin trimmer ruler, but I think I need to read through the instructions a few times, to get the process down. It does give nice straight sides and seems to go together quickly. Take care everyone

Hello everyone, this has been a busy week and it is Saturday already.
Ginny, I hope you are getting back into a more normal routine now that the memorial service for DMIL is over. Don't feel guilty about how you feel and you can vent here any time. You have been very supportive of your DH and that is what counts. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
Ruth, Good for you figuring out the pattern. Patterns are often wrong . In my old age I an sticking to simpler patterns that don't need a lot of following. I call that mindless knitting. I have been checking patterns on Pinterest and there are a few I am interested in. I had yo go to Michaels yesterday and bought one skin of yarn and left. Went to my Knit Wits Gp and had a good time. I just want to finish this b/blanket and it is more than 1/2 way. I don't really like it too much but I will finish it and wash it which I hope soften it up.
cj, good for you keeping busy. Years ago I too a quilting class and I was working on a lon cabin quilt. I don't remember what happened to it or why I quit but I know I never finished it. I probably donated it somewhere and hope someone finished it. The ruler sounds like a good tool to use and probably will save you some time.
Phyl, I know you are busy somewhere. Take care.
Today I hope to have time to crochet, I haven't been knitting much lately though I knit better than I crochet.
Next week I have 2 Dr. apts. one for eye treatments and the other for iron infusion. I will have iron fusion treatments for 5 weeks. I went through this a couple of years ago then my blood count got so low they had to give me 4 units of blood. and then 4 months later they had to give my 2 more units of blood.
We had a lot of rain earlier in the week but yesterday and today the sun is shining and the temp. is about 60 and it looks like a nice spring day. Take care everyone.

Good evening! Today was a long long day. I left a little after 9 with Dh and we got home after 5. MIL's service went ok- I thought the pastor was impersonal and cold- but the family (SIL and Dh were happy, so I guess that is all that matters). Things became complicated by the fact that they were not able to access the burial site with the snow, so a graveside ceremony must take place on another day. Not a smooth running day at all.....and it made me appreciate the funeral home I used for my mother who were wonderful and did everything for me. My MIL was a difficult and troubled woman- so a day devoted to glowing eulogies seems inappropriate.
Well, another interesting thing....the baby that I am making the afghan for decided a few hours ago that he did not want to wait until March 11- his due date- and his mother is in labor now! I have to put a border on the afghan- trim the edges and it's done! So I hope to work on it tonight...
CJ- the batting I used (and like) is Warm and Natural. I do think lots of quilters use it.....but of course it's an individual choice. I am glad that your new log cabin ruler is working out well for you. Keep on practicing with it- you will have it figured out in no time!!
Meg, glad to hear that you are taking care of yourself. I will pray that all your medical treatments go well for you- I remember you had a poor reaction to your eye treatment once. I also hope that these iron infusions work- and you can build up your blood counts. Were you able to get any crochetting time in? Looks like we are in for more snow tomorrow morning- perhaps they will cancel church. No idea when burial for my MIL will be.
Have a good night all. Ginny

well Ginny, it really stinks that you have to still go thru a graveside service sometime when weather permits. One long day is bad enough. NOne of the funerals I ever went to had eulogies. The pastor ( or priest for those Catholic funerals I attended) talked and that was that.Last one I attended was that of my dil's mother but toward the end of the service my then 5 year old dgd fainted which she had done a couple times before back at their home so my ds and I took the three grands and took her to the hospital to be checked so didn't do any post service things either.
Meg, yes I've found quite a few patterns lately that had errors. I think that for most of the patterns nowdays you really have to be an experienced crocheter or knitter or when the pattern has mistakes you'd be lost.I'm just the opposite of you, I'm a way better crocheter than knitter. I know we kiddingly have mentioned in the past that if only we lived closer to one another we could each teach things to each other.
CJ, I looked the ruler up on Amazon. It looks interesting but I'd need practice also. I do love the looks of log cabin quilts but then there are a lot of quilts I love the looks of.
It's beginning to look a little nasty here weather wise. It wasn't all that cold and I didn't think it was supposed to be cold tomorrow either but it does look like snow is coming.
gotta go check on my chili

Good afternoon Ruth and all who follow!
It's just stopped snowing here, think we got another 3 or 4 inches. It was still pretty light when I went to church- where only 15 people attended. Pastor still had a service though....a simple one, but we heard his sermon for the day. Glad I went....
Burial is Tuesday for MIL. Her service consisted of 3 or 4 scripture readings- and then a super short message- which was very generic in nature. He attempted to personalize it by saying that my FIL was waiting at the gates of heaven for MIL and probably said to her "what took you so long to join me!". Ok, I am an honest person here....so for me that rang false as my inlaws did not have a happy marriage. I suppose that the pastor said that becasue he was trying to make it all sound as though my MIL was a happy individual. I do know that her children would have loved to have a happy mother- but that was not her nature. (My pastor did not do the ceremony).
The baby is born- so I have to finish this afghan. I need another 30 minutes of work on it....then wash it and I am done. Time to find another project then,
Hope everyone is having a good weekend. Ginny

Ginny, it sounds like the baby was born about a month early. IS he or she ok? Nice thing about blankets is that the baby can continue to use them. they don't grow out of blankets like they do the rest of the clothing. I know it won't take you long to do the edging. I'm not even going to speak about this shawl.... I'll let you know when it's done. The other day I looked up patterns for infinity scarves to see which one I want to make for ddil and I saw some nice fingerless gloves I might make her too...if I ever get the shawl done. Meg, I've been meaning to mention pinterest. The problem I have with them is that many times you see a pattern you like and click on it and it's not in English. I was a purse pattern once that was really beautiful that I want to make for a dgd but it wasn't in English. I searched forever and finally found it in English. Most you can't and when you hit the "translate" button it really doesn't come out right. The other thing is that some look like they're free and when you click they aren't free after all or there's only a picture and no pattern. The other problem I have is that I want a written pattern. I don't want to have to sit and follow along with a video while I'm trying, at the same time, to knit or crochet.

Hello Crafters Meg - I hope everything goes well with your eye appointment and iron infusion. Hope you found some time to crochet. Ginny - Sounds like the service was helpful to your MIL's children and that's the most important thing, isn't it? Too bad you have to stretch it to another day for the burial, I think it's less stressful to get it all over with at once. I guess that baby was ready to come into the world I'm glad you were so close to finishing the blanket, I'm sure they will appreciate and love this gift from you. Ruth - Hope your weather didn't get too bad and that your chili warmed you up Phyl - Hope you are doing well. I ended up working on Block #8 for the Solstice quilt today instead of the Lone Star quilt. I decided I'm going to chose the traditional layout for this quilt, so I ended up only making a 12 1/2 inch block. I didn't do any applique, instead I found a website with instructions for a patchwork heart and I put that in the middle of the block. Here's a link to the website with the heart patterns for different size blocks (I did the 8 1/2 inch one): cluckclucksew.com/2015/01/making-heart-blocks-in-multiple-sizes.html I'm really happy with how the block came out and it went together very quickly. It made me want to make some more heart blocks, but I really don't need to start anything else right now I also finished making one of the 6 inch log cabin blocks using my new ruler. It came together really nicely. I think what I found is that even though you don't need to cut the strips to the exact size, you need to make them only a little longer and wider than they will be when finished. That makes the sewing together and trimming easier than if the strips are too long and wide. Take care everyone.
