This is a conservative thread to allow those with conservative views to express themselves. We welcome Republicans, Tea Party folks, and those who believe in the Constitution as written, not as interpreted by liberal judges. If you have liberal views we invite you to participate in a civil and respectful conversation. We would respectfully request that if you cannot post in a respectful and civil manner to refrain from doing so until you can. Good discussions are great - insulting arguments are not. We welcome discussions about our weight loss journey.

Again the people have spoken although narrowly. VP Mike Pence cast the tie-breaking vote in favor of President Trump's nominee for education secretary, Betsy DeVos.
DeVos is unlike previous nominees in that she has no personal or professional experience in public education or elected office.
A Michigan billionaire and major Republican donor, she has spent three decades using her wealth and political clout to advocate for alternatives to public schools, particularly taxpayer-funded vouchers to help parents pay tuition for private and religious schools. She also has advocated for a loosely regulated variety of charter schools.
Republicans have defended her as an outsider who would challenge the status quo and as a conservative who would reduce the federal footprint in public schools. They are keen to change course after eight years in which the Obama Education Department exercised an unusually high level of influence.
But DeVos’s free-market approach triggered opposition from teachers unions, which mobilized considerable forces against her, as well as from fellow education reformers who said they worried she was more committed to the ideology of “school choice” than to ensuring quality schools for vulnerable children.

Our public schools here are in the crapper, and the more money we throw at them the deeper in the crapper they go. Republicans want to change that, but they hate kids?

Meg, thanks for the start up. Hi Gary and Susie Lee.
Love it love it love it that Pence is the first VP to break a tie for a cabinet confirmation. Figures that a "republican" from Maine was one of the two that voted against. Anyone remember Olympia Snow, again of Maine, that was very instrumental in getting Obama Care passed? Am I remembering this wrong? And then she decided to retire from politics soon after. What was THAT all about?
I just read an article about one of the UC Berkley protestors that is being investigated. he apparently posted some stuff on social media, showing him beating a Trump supporter.....and guess what, he is employed by UC Berkley. This is just the tip of the iceberg folks. The FBI is involved, and I hope they take this investigation very deep.
There is a very orchestrated movement, funded by the likes of George Soros, on creating as much havoc as possible to make it "hard for Trump to govern". Unbelievable. These libs are just disgusting. Get over it! As Obama said, elections have consequences. I see Hillary has reared her head again. "Future is Female". Well that didn't quite work out for her. Of course she will only support lib/dem females.....conservative females are just dirt to her. So much for us wimmens standing together.
I don't understand something.....Obama repeatedly said he would extend his hand to Iran instead of the sword.....then makes a really stupid deal and gives them MILLIONS of dollars....nary a peep from the main stream media. President Trump wants a better relationship with Russia and he is dragged thru the mud and villified. The libs are becoming more unhinged by the day. I should have bought stock in the company that manufactures Prozac and zoloft.

I love it, love it, love it that Trump is draining the swamp and the confirmation of Betsy Devos today is part of that effort. She will fight the public school unions who are more interested in tenure than teaching. We need a fresh approach to public education and she will be a breath of fresh air. As for the die-hard, head in the sand, liberals, well they need therapy.

Also love, love, love that the Republicans shut down Elizabeth Warren's filibuster against Jeff Sessions and his confirmation vote will come this evening.
From an article in The Guardian:
Warren was first interrupted by the presiding officer, at that point (while she was reading a letter from Coretta Scott King) Senator Steve Daines of Montana, who said she was violating Senate rules. She protested that she merely repeating the words of King and continued. But not long after, McConnell raised his objection.
“The Senator has impugned the motives and conduct of our colleague from Alabama,” he said. “I call the Senator to order under the provisions of Rule 19.”
Under “Rule 19,” Senators are not allowed to “directly or indirectly, by any form of words impute to another Senator or to other Senators any conduct or motive unworthy or unbecoming a Senator”.
Warren objected: “I am surprised that the words of Coretta Scott King are not suitable for debate in the United States Senate. I ask leave of the Senate to continue my remarks.”
McConnell objected to that request and the Republican-controlled Senate voted to shut down her appeals. She will not be allowed to speak from the floor until the end of Sessions’ nomination process; the vote is expected Wednesday evening.
McConnell later defended his actions. “Senator Warren was giving a lengthy speech,” he was quoted on the Politico website as saying. “She had appeared to violate the rule. She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.”

LOL Gary, GMTA! Was just going to post something similar. Elizabeth Warren has a lot of nerve. First off, that claim has been disproven by media outlets and witnesses. Anyone can do a little research and see this is just another attempt at smearing ANYONE nominated by President Trump. And Cory Booker and his hate filled nonsense regarding Sessions. Just last year, Booker said he felt “blessed and honored to have partnered with Sen. Sessions” in passing legislation that honored civil rights advocates.
“And so this is truly one of my life’s greatest moments,” Mr. Booker said. “I am humbled to be able to participate here and pay tribute to some of the extraordinary Americans whose footsteps paved the way for me and my generation. I feel blessed and honored to have partnered with Senator Sessions in being the Senate sponsors of this important award.”
The legislation awarded 1965 voting rights marches foot soldiers in Selma, Alabama, with the Congressional Gold Medal. Getting back to Warren, she lied for how many years about her non-existent Native Indian heritage. I need to go back and check, but I believe she listed herself as a minority in professional directories commonly used by recruiters (and if I recall, used it for her applications to Penn and Harvard). Okay, just check a bit. It's out there for all who wish to do a little sleuthing.

And about DeVos. I don't really know too much about her and I really don't know what kind of impact she would have on state/city/town teachers regarding tenure and salary. I do know that a majority of teachers DESPISE the Common Core Standards. As someone said previously, a lot of the inner city schools are just not working, and it comes down to lack of parental participation (i.e. helping with homework, reading to your kid, volunteering at school), large amounts of funds being used for things other than the students, and lack of accountablity for teachers and administration. Pouring more money into these schools won't help.....you need to get to the root of the problem. I won't get into the overpopulation issue.....
Many charter schools in the cities work well....because you have to WANT to be there and you have to qualify. I cannot imagine how awful it must be to sit in a classroom where gangs rule and teachers are afraid. What can be done about that??
And about tenure. I honestly don't get the concept. I can see it is a great tool for job security and a way to retain good teachers. But it is also one of the things with unintended consequences. I have memories of some really awful teachers of my own and family members, but it would cost the school too much to get rid of them, so they move them around or give them the "bad" class and hope they leave on their own. I don't know what the answer to that is either. The salaries of teachers that I know are not off the charts, except for ones that have been doing it for 25 years or more, but higher salaries come with any job with longetivity, right? I really don't think DeVos will be instrumental in these kinds of things.
Break is over, back to work. Lin

The Jersey Shore area seems to be a magnet for those that wish to do our people harm. Remember the Islamic terrorist that planted the trash can bombs along the route of a charity fundraising run? Same terrorist that planted a similar device in NYC that injured many people. Now an illegal alien has been arrested in Long Branch, NJ. Take a look:
Immigration and Customs Enforcement informed The Daily Caller Tuesday that a man arrested last week for allegedly sexually assaulting and robbing several young girls is an illegal immigrant.
Daniel Omar Mejia-Reyes, 27, was arrested in Long Branch, N.J., last Wednesday after attacking three girls, ages 12, 14 and 16, in one afternoon, according to a criminal complaint obtained by TheDC.
According to the complaint, Mejia-Reyes grabbed the 14-year-old victim “and attempted to drag her away from her location, while grabbing her vagina, and making lewd sexual comments.”
He allegedly took the 12-year-old’s cellphone and touched her genitalia. He also committed robbery by the use of force by shaking the 16-year-old’s shoulders and taking an iPhone 5s from the victim’s hand, according to the complaint.
Mejia-Reyes is being held without bond at Monmouth County Correctional Facility and is being charged with two counts of robbery, one count of kidnapping, one count of aggravated sexual assault and two counts of aggravated criminal sexual contact, plus four other charges.
ICE issued an immigration detainer for Mejia-Reyes as he is in the country illegally. The agency would not tell The Daily Caller Mejia-Reyes’ country of origin or whether he has previously been deported.
*********************
Seriously, we have enough of our own perverts and crazies....we don't need any more coming over here unchecked. Imagine if that was your own daughter or granddaughter being attacked. Would you say "oh honey, the guy just needs a place to stay and a job and he won't do anyone any more harm". I think not. All these libs really need to put themselves in a victim's shoes....or the victim's family's shoes. Really, really sickening how the libs cry over the B.S. and have no tears for our own citizens under attack. Let's put Americans first for a change.

Posted to the wrong thread. Sorry Crafters.
Sessions was always going to be approved, the dems just had to have their few minutes each to make their political statement to their base. Theatrics.

I could do with a lot less theatrics and a lot more results. Trump is delivering results but the Democrats are fighting him with every underhanded tactic imaginable.

I agree. Honestly, I have stopped watching a lot of it. I just know they are going to throw a hissy fit every time Trump does anything. So nothing they say has any value. If everything is a crisis, then nothing is.

Hello, Linda, Gary and Susie, I enjoyed reading all your posts.
I was delighted to see Jeff Sessions being sworn in as Attorney General by President Trump. It is good to know that now we have a President and Attorney General who will see hat the laws of this country are kept. Though it wont be easy because the Democrats will do everything they can to obstruct every attempt to move ahead.

Actually it was Vice President Mike Pence who swore him in. President Trump gave a very good speech prior to the swearing in.

Well, as expected, the radical left totally corrupt 9th Circuit Court of appeals has rendered its unconstitutional decision on President Trumps temporary travel ban from 7 state sponsors of terrorism:
In a unanimous, 29-page opinion, three judges with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit flatly rejected the government’s argument that the suspension of the order should be lifted immediately for national security reasons and forcefully asserted their ability to serve as a check on the president’s power. The judges wrote that any suggestion that they couldn’t “runs contrary to the fundamental structure of our constitutional democracy.”
The judges did not declare outright that the ban was meant to disfavor Muslims — essentially saying it was too early for them to render a judgment on that question. But their ruling is undeniably a blow to the government and means the ban will remain off for the foreseeable future.
Trump reacted angrily on Twitter, posting just minutes after the ruling, “SEE YOU IN COURT, THE SECURITY OF OUR NATION IS AT STAKE!” The Justice Department, which was defending the administration’s position, said in a statement it was “reviewing the decision and considering its options.”
