One of my friends who has suffered many years with extreme obesity is now working with a coach. Apparently the coach has lost l00 pounds and is helping people along the way. It has been very good for my friend. I wanted to talk about one thing she had my friend do initially. First and foremost my friend made her own plan for eating. The next thing was to pick just one behavior she wanted to change - work on that behavior only until she was sure it was hers and then moved on to another. My friend has been doing very well. I liked the ideas a lot. Using my friend's example I have picked one behavior which is my most difficult in this journey and that is eliminating sugar. Well now I must go and pack for our trip. Don't really like to do that but the sooner I get started the sooner it will be done.
Menu B - Usual yogurt parfait L Salad w/ turkey pepperoni and 1 oz LF cheese - homemade lite dressing D chili - 1 piece of cornbread S banana - 1 C FF milk

Running errands this morning. Our weather is great here but I know many are struggling with snow storms.
I'm eating lighter today because DH and I are eating out tonight. Our 45th wedding anniversary is Feb. 12 but we've always gone out to eat early because of Valentine's day celebrations. Many restaurants will be packed this weekend so we'll go tonight. I'll be looking for seafood and will skip bread and pasta.

Marie: Thanks for sharing your friend's story. Sounds great. In the years of Beck the discussion has come up about focusing on one of the points she makes and work on that until it is owned by the person. People have a lot of success doing that. While that is the best way we do the review the way we do because people lose focus and wander. In a way our weekly goal on Tuesday can be turned into a personal behavior change journey. I don't that with my exercise.
About making your own food plan that is such a big part of success. All the food decisions are yours and you learn to manage your eating.
Happy Anniversary Linda! Enjoy your dinner.
I tried adding baby spinach to my eggs in the morning but I didn't like it. I put the eggs in my oatmeal and I didn't like having the veggies too. Am using it up in my salad at night which is a nice treat for me.
We are having snow as I type. We our in position or I should say the storm is in position to give us 8-14 inches of snow. My brother in Seattle emailed me and they had heavy wet snow and lost a lot of branches on their property. One big bush broke off at the base and they will probably have to take down a red maple. His wife loves her yard and her plants so she is upset.

Good Morning
Marie, thanks for sharing your friend's story. Today I am meeting with a nutrition coach who taught a class I took in January. My weight just bounces up and down and thinks it is in maintenance mode so I want to see what changes I can make. I will be babysitting the grandbaby today since she has a fever and can't go to day care. DH will take over when I have my appointment. Our younger daughter and family are coming for dinner. The girls' preferred dinner is spaghetti, salad and a chocolate dessert. I will make them brownies and give them the leftovers to take home.
Another heavy rainstorm is predicted for this afternoon but at least I got in a long morning walk.

jamescat1 Audrey, enjoy the time with the nutrition coach. I'll be interested to see what she recommends because there are lots of us running the maintenance trail, up and down.

I like Marie's post about working on one behavior until you feel like you own it. However, for me, I feel like there are so many behaviors, if I did things that way it'd take me a very long time. But I can see if one has many pounds to lose, it might feel more manageable to begin with. Interesting idea though, Marie, please keep us updated about your friend, I'd like to know how that strategy works longer term!
As for me, cleaning lady is here and I didn't get up early enough to make breakfast so I'm going to grab something light to eat, then get a healthy sandwich later. Not my best day but the best I can do under the circumstances because I don't want to get in her way in the kitchen right now. Tonight I will make sautéed vegetarian "chicken" breast in a little olive oil, capers and fresh peas. I'll put that with some salad I think, and a big Sumo tangerine for dessert.

linda72, Happy Anniversary, Linda! mariel, Marie, These are just my thoughts. I know that everyone is different. I actually had a health crisis where I had to completely give up sugar for months. No choice. I have reactive hypoglycemia, and due to other untreated medical issues, any sugar would drop my blood glucose. I often struggled to get my blood sugar high enough to drive. I was thrilled when my medical issues were treated and my A1C got ABOVE a 5. I literally couldn't have any added sugar, and also no fruit, no milk, no yogurt, no Splenda (has some sugar in it). I was basically living on veggies, meat, fat, nuts, and a few high fiber, low carb cereals and breads. And also very aged cheese. I was SO HAPPY when my health improved and I could have some sugar. It definitely did change things permanently. I no longer buy marina sauce; I just use crushed tomatoes with basil. I now look for 0 sugar on many items such as sauces. But I can have fruit now! And I can have some treats. I no longer have certain treats that I used to have at night. Ice cream type treats seems especially bad, even the reduced calorie ones. For a treat at night, I'm more likely to have a small amount of carbs (4 pretzel thins) and some protein (ie. turkey). When I do have dessert, it is more likely to be a little of the real thing, and I often schedule it before or after exercise. When they have sugar elimination challenges at work, I DO NOT PARTICIPATE. Been there; done that. I guess I'm just saying that completely eliminating sugar is really, really, really hard. I'm very happy with where I am now. I would hate to have to go back to no sugar at all.

Marie -- I'm another who will be interested to hear what your friend's coach has to say. I think we are all on the look-out for words of advice from all creditable sources.
Audrey -- I also hope you will share what your nutrition coach says about getting out of that maintenance up-and-down.
Linda -- Happy Anniversary! Here's to many more.
This afternoon DH and I took the bed apart, vacuumed the rails and underneath the bed, turned the mattress, and washed the mattress pad and pillow case liners. All this deep-cleaning energy came about because DH has been fighting a stuffed up head and runny nose. We thought that dust in the bedroom might be contributing to his woes.
Bitter cold today. Never got out of the 20's. But it will be in the 60's by the day after tomorrow. Go figure.
Menu today: Breakfast: Wendy's sausage and egg burrito Lunch: Ground beef loose-fried with onions, peppers, corn, tomatoes, served over a slice of bread; nf milk Snack: nf yogurt Supper: Progresso Light zesty Santa Fe style soup, quesadilla made from Ole tortilla wrap and nf shredded cheddar cheese

I had a 6 month med check in Austin today and we were gone most of the day. mariel,I think it's good to attack one problem at a time and while I don't have a bad sugar issue I would find it terribly hard to give up sugar completely like Tammy had to.I like fruit,Greek yogurt and almost everything has sugar in it now.Good luck to whatever you decide to do about it. linda72,Happy Anniversary and enjoy dinner. It sounds like you have a good plan for today. bbbearsmom,I tried adding baby spinach to my scrambled egg/eggbeaters once and while I like baby spinach in a salad I didn't like it in my eggs either.Stay safe in all that snow. jamescat1 Audrey let us know how your meeting with the nutritionist goes.I need to learn this maintenance thing and not freak out when I gain 1 lb while I'm not eating more than before. Tammy,I can't imagine an A1C below 5.When I was diabetic my highest A1C was 7.6.It is now down to 5.8 and I'm off my diabetes meds.I can't imagine doing without natural sugar in fruit although I don't eat a lot of fruit or giving up everything that has sugar in it which is almost everything now.

Sometimes the cosmos are just in cahoots to conspire against you, you know what I mean? As I mentioned earlier, it's cleaning day and I needed to get out of the house so the cleaning can commence without me underfoot. Every other week I go out to lunch on cleaning day - after the gym - and I get a roast turkey sandwich on whole grain thin sliced bread. It's a healthy sandwich. For years I've done this, and I usually get a sandwich and often a cup of tomato soup to go with it. Last month after a discussion here, I asked myself WHY I always get a whole sandwich when I could get a 1/2 sandwich & 1/2 cup of soup combo? So I tried ordering a 1/2 & 1/2 combo a few weeks ago, and lo and behold, I was completely satisfied and had no need for that extra 1/2 sandwich. So today I ordered the same 1/2 & 1/2 combo...and it arrived as a full sandwich and cup of soup, their mistake. I looked at it and thought, "Really?! I'm trying to modify my behavior here so could someone cut me a break?!" Then I went over to the counter immediately, and got a to go bag, and wrapped up the second half of the sandwich, which I will have tonight for a late dinner when I get home from ballet class. I think that's progress, yes? I could have sent back the other half right away, but honestly, since it was ballet night and I get home later, it was convenient to think of having something healthy to eat without having to cook tonight.

surfgirl, Good work! borntexan, Becky, an A1C below 5 and your thinking gets foggy and you risk losing brain cells. It was imperative that I not have sugar; sugar could make me pass out. In fact, I did pass out several times, and the 1st time I got a concussion. So, really, I did not have a choice about the sugar. But I was very happy when I could have a little. There is a big difference between no sugar and a little sugar.
