With the new interest in growing our own herbs and vegetables, we thought it would be fun to share ideas, techniques and general knowledge about any kind of gardening!!

I'm picking up my grow light fixture later and should have my basement lettuce growing operation up and running next week! DH put a utility sink in the basement for me a while ago and that will be a big help. The light fixture will hang from one of the beams, on adjustable cords. Six-foot plastic table. So far, thoughts of lettuce (butterhead, loose leaf), radishes, and herbs.
Anyone else doing any winter indoor gardening? Herbs, veggies?

Just rosemary and basil in my kitchen window fullmahina, since my thyme and mint bit the dust. Wish I had a basement to grow things in and do it right but the Houston area isn't real big on basements.

What a great idea!! I love gardening. It's been a passion of mine for the last 39 years, I gardened with my Mom for the first 25 until she passed away, it was 'our thing'
I just made blueberry jam yesterday from some frozen blueberries, I wa a little worried about it setting up but it's perfect.
I'm excited for this new board! Thank you!

I live in the desert southwest where winter gardening is a thing. However, it's not me who does the gardening. It's my husband. I just benefit from his green thumb. Currently we have all sorts of lettuce that is ready for eating. Not quite ready yet are tomatoes, green peppers, jalapenos, carrots, hmmmm, I don't know what else. Herbs, we have rosemary all year and I think there is something - maybe basil - in the garden, but I'm not sure. Rosemary is a wonderfully colorful and fragrant plant that grows out of control. We have to contain it. Also brings in the bees.
Also our lemon and tangerine tree are producing edibles. Grapefruit and orange trees are not quite ready. Grapefruit almost, oranges still green.

Seriously...you killed MINT?? I know right?!? That is a truly pathetic gardener that can kill off mint. Mint can grown on Mars for Pete’s sake!

6 cups of blueberries, 4 cups of sugar, 1 package of surejell, 6 jelly jars. Thank you! Questions---do you process the jam or just keep in the fridge? 8 oz or 4 oz jelly jars? Reading that makes me miss gardening in Hawaii. Year-round, of course. What I miss most are my citrus trees. We didn't have a huge piece of property but we had a decent yard. The soil was horrible---very heavy, lots of clay, so I did most of my gardening in containers. I had dwarf citrus---Meyer lemon, Bearss lime, a green and yellow striped lemon that was pink inside, and calamansi. I might try to grown the calamansi indoors under lights once I get my basement growing area set up. I found a source for it online but they are sold out but I will keep looking.

6 cups of blueberries, 4 cups of sugar, 1 package of surejell, 6 jelly jars. Thank you! Questions---do you process the jam or just keep in the fridge? 8 oz or 4 oz jelly jars? I followed the instructions for cooked jam on the surejell insert. Got both the jars (8 ounce) and the surejell at Walmart. Washed the jars in hot, hot soapy water, boiled the lids and rings in a pot on the stove. Poured the piping hot jam into the jars and put the lids and rings on, I heard each jar pop within the hour. They are nicely sealed. I have years and years of experience canning and freezing so I feel very confident that they are safe to store without boiling water bath or pressure cooker but you can always process if you'd feel safer. :-)

fullmahina, Unfortunately, we can't garden "year-round." It's too hot in the summer for most things. Not peppers, but way too hot for tomatoes and most everything else is fried by the heat by July. Would love to have home-grown tomatoes in the summer, because the store-bought ones are blah.
