The ground is covered with snow, and the high tomorrow will be 7 degrees. Snow is supposed to start falling at noon and stop around midnight. Do I need to say that outside gardening is a far off dream?
Yesterday I sorted through accumulating seed catalogs and dumped most. I ordered root vegetables from Eden, mainly heirloom seeds. I'm planning to start a new food plan soon. No GMO foods or foods that have been fed GMOs. Veggies without seeds, no nightshade plants. I'm avoiding lectins in an effort to heal my gut.
I haven't had a garden for several years. I'm planting carrots, turnips, beets, and a ton of sunflowers for the birds. I like watching the goldfinches in the fall. There is a new dianthus in the Park seed catalog that wants a spot in the flower bed along the driveway. And I'm thinking about some more lilies and liatris.
Our growing season is short. 5,000 feet elevation.

Johnny's has been a favorite of mine for years. I started to order from them, but Eden had everything I wanted.
I didn't know about Pinetree. Thanks for the info and the links.
This is a good day for day dreaming about gardening! I don't know how much snow we got last night. There was a wind, and it drifted. Probably about a foot, but some of the back deck has 18" on it.

Spring must be on the way. The robins finally arrived about five weeks later than usual. The subzero temperatures are now a memory, and the snow is melting. This was a record setting cold February and March.
I'm not starting any plants indoors this year. I will plants some of the plants that do well in the veggie garden, both flowers and veggies. I will continue to have someone now the grass for me. I like zooming around on my John Deere lawn tractor, but it's becoming a matter of priorities. Aging takes a toll on my energy.
Our average last frost free day is May 30.
One of my current obsessions is various types of hens and chicks. They do well here. Takes time for them to settle in and spread.

I am not starting anything inside either. A few of my geraniums overwintered in the basement and will make it but others won't. I have brought my canna planters in for years but this year it looks like they finally pooped out. Oh well.
My basement growlight garden is doing so well that I am not going to bother growing lettuce, radishes, spinach or green onions outdoors. So spoiled by the control I have with the basement garden---I control the water and there are no insects or animals to deal with. And before you know it Autumn comes and I would have to restart the basement planters. The only thing I have to re-seed is the radish---all others are cut-and-come again.
My DH zooms around on the John Deere. I know how to but he is possessive, lol.
Hens and chicks are nice but I can't think of a place where I could use them. I need to replenish a lot of things in my perennial garden---the year before last was brutal and I gave them a chance but many were badly damaged. Time to rip up and replace!
Good luck with your gardening this year---summer flies by so quickly!

We're a few days away from daffodils and tulips! There is an early daffodil that resembles Thalia. I thing I must have purchased the bulbs because their name is Snow Baby!!
I need to get someone to help me with the spring yard cleanup. An acre and a half is nice in terms of space, but it's too much work for me. Branches, leftover leaves, weeds all take more bending than I can do! Aging is not a garden fanatic's friend!
The trees and shrubs are beginning to show signs of leaf buds. The grass in the lawn is coming back to life.
This afternoon I'm going to plant a few seeds for flowers and vegetables. Most will go into the ground in a month.

I planted a couple of tomato plants, 2 pepper plants and a couple of basil -they've lived 5 days so woo-hoo lol
They're in containers and I noticed the tomato plants are wilted at the end of the day. They're supposed to be in full sunlight according to their labels, but maybe not?

Small victory! I actually got 4 cherry tomatoes off my new plants lol. And there are 4 other clusters growing! And 2 peppers on my jalapeno plant. It's so funny, with all the rain we've had, I will need to water the big tomato plant today because it was looking wilty late afternoon yesterday. I think I'll need to re-pot it, too. It's gotten a lot bigger than I expected.

There are currently twelve varieties of daffodils in bloom! Over the last 25 years, I've planted hundreds of bulbs!
It's still early, but I think I'm going to put some seeds in today. One of the most cuccesful gardeners I know planted in the very late fall.
The leaves are just coming out on some of the aspens. There are so many different greens at this time of year.

snowsaint, I love the different spring greens, feast for the eyes. We are done with our daffys and apple blossoms, bleeding hearts are putting on a show and the iris are just getting ready to bloom. Can't wait for my first real tomato from our vine.

I transplanted the 2 tomato plants yesterday to larger pots (well, 5 gallon buckets that I drilled some drain holes in lol)and they're not dead or even wilty today, so I'm hopeful lol The jalapeno and banana pepper plants are doing well, have a lot of blooms but just the 1 little pepper so far. Now that I moved the tomato plant out of the container with them, they may do better. Only 1 basil plant has survived, but it may do better with the tomato plant out, too.

The plants are all doing well! The peppers and basil really took off growing when I removed the tomato plant from the shared bed. Both tomato plants are growing really well. The producing one (cherry tomatoes) has a bunch of new green ones clustering in; the other one (better boy variety I think?) has a bunch of blooms but just one lowly green tomato about the size of a large marble lol. I think this was the same kind I tried to grow several years back but it only produced 1 tomato that never turned red.
