I was cleaning some green beans and all of a sudden I could not "cup" my hand without getting a serious pain shooting from the base of my thumb towards the knuckle by the nail. I can bend my thumb then cup it, but if I make the move to just cup my hand (or hold a fork or anything like that) it really hurts.
Can tendonitis flair up out of nowhere like that?

I put a brace on it and it's a little better today. I still can't "pinch" or any movement like that, but it's just the thumb and that specific type of movement.

I wonder if you could have carpel tunnel. My thumb will have shooting pain sometimes. Does your shoulder or elbow ever ache?

I had carpal tunnel back in 88 on the other hand. Have a scar on my wrist and thumb from the 2 surgeries. This felt similar, but more acute than that (no numbness or tingling).

Getting old isn't for sissies. Mine usually flares up around seasonal allergy time.. It could be related to the GBS, all those things they warned you about down the line...
Motrin, ben-gay, brace.

It's better every day. I still have to be careful turning lids (as I found out) but I'm pretty much about 75% now and minimal pain

Updating: I am about 95% now with this. I still put the brace on and take it easy if I feel a twinge. I get the feeling it's never going to completely go away, but as long as I don't try to open stubborn jars, it's not really a problem. It was most likely de Quervain's Tenosynovitis . I admit to a juvenile giggle over the "Motions. You can get the condition if you move your wrist over and over again, whether it’s for fun or for work." part lol. Because of the test, I'm pretty sure this is what I have. "Next, you’ll get the Finkelstein test. The doctor will ask you to bend your thumb across your palm. Then you’ll bend your fingers down over your thumb to make a fist. This movement stretches your tendons. If it hurts on the thumb side of your wrist, you probably have de Quervain's tenosynovitis." Oddly enough, when I had the surgery for carpal tunnel on my right hand decades ago, the doctor actually did the surgery for this on that hand as well. I thought it was normal to have the thumb scar as well as the wrist, but it's not -they're 2 separate conditions, he just had the foresight to do both at the same time, a preventative measure.
