I didn't realize how old this thread was, and I gasped when I saw Mike. Damn, I miss him. Me too. It was so fun to reread our conversation here though. 🙂

Just five basic rules to follow each day: 1. Limit fat to no more than 35 grams for women or 45 grams for men. 2. Eat at least 20 grams of fiber (25 for men). 3. Eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables. 4. Eat at least two servings of dairy foods, but remember they also can contribute to the fat count. 5. Go easy on refined sugars and alcohol and don't eat or drink them until after the fiber requirement has been met. Unlike earlier programs, this plan doesn't require people to be nutritional accountants, Miller-Kovach says. With the exception of putting a lid on fat grams, it essentially tells people to eat almost anything they want.

Worked there 17 years during which that time the fat and fiber plan was around. Started about the same time as the point system. I loved it. Easy to follow

I can’t believe people didn’t like this plan. We did this at work and several of us lost big numbers on it. I think that was the easiest 40 lbs I ever lost. At the time I was drinking full sugar Coca Cola and still lost weight. I was out here looking to remind me of the fiber requirements so I can try it again.

I can’t believe people didn’t like this plan. In those days you got little cardboard slide rule thingys to calculate the number of fat and fiber points. People figured out right away that if you ate lots of fiber, the calculator would totally negate the fat. With enough fiber you could go into negative fats. However, if you ate that much fiber, and didn't understand that you had to drastically increase your liquids, you could get severely bound up in a hurry. And since people were no fonder of drinking water then than they are now, there was a lot of discussion in meetings about medical solutions to the side effects of excessive fiber.

I think I might still have the slide rule.
At the time, Trader Joe's had a cereal (they still might) that was high enough in fiber that it ended up being 0 points a serving. So people would inhale it by the box. Eventually WW realized that some people have less common sense than a pea and modified the plan so that fiber was capped.

This was the only WW program that I was able to achieve and maintain my goal weight on. It was so simple; I knew to stay away from the high sugar, low fat cookies and cakes. Worked like a dream. I remember I lost 7 lbs the first week.

The Fat and Fiber plan by Weight Watchers was by far the most successful plan I have ever been on. Was able to lose tons of weight, keep it off, and learns portion control.

Oh yes! It worked for me. Although it took ages for me to lose the weight. But, i didn’t gain the weight quickly either. I started February 2, 1995. Took nine months to lose 18 pounds. My goal was to lose 22. Kept it off til I married a man who looooves to eat. But as I recall, it was at least 20grams fiber, , less than 20grams of fat, at least five servings of fruits and veggies, and 8 glasses of water. I thought it was easy. No points to count.

I never did Fat & Fiber or core, so normally I would not read this post. But I popped in for some reason and seeing Mike threw me for a loop.
Reading his posts I remembered how intelligent he was. I miss all of his wisdom and advice.

I absolutely loved the fat and fiber plan and I was able to lose all my weight, reach my goal, and became a lifetime member of weight watchers. So sad to see the fat and fiber plan go!
