Hello all... So glad to find this board!
I joined WW this morning. Sorry to unload so much, so soon, but I am little nervous. I am brand new, have never been a WW member. I am NOT new to getting fit, however. I've lost 30 pounds in the past year. I am deliberately going slowly to ensure my adjustments are sustainable. I am very much against dieting. Over the past 5 years, with a LOT of research, I have come to the conclusion that modern food science is pretty junky. I believe it's important to include quality fats in your diet to feel full (good butter, whole cream, eggs with yolks, full-fat cheeses & yogurts, etc.) and typically 'taboo' proteins are actually very healthy (red meats, eggs with yolks, lots of nuts, etc). I think clean eating is key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle (minimally processed food and cooking using real ingredients). But I still have a few problems... soda being #1.
So.... the double whammy of seeing how many points is given to nuts and soda has me reeling me a bit! I currently have a can of pop with dinner every day and snack on nuts in the afternoon to keep me away from chips and chocolate. But a can of pop and 1 oz of cashews is 15 points!!! That is half my points for a whole day but only 300 calories! I am very worried this WW plan will not be sustainable for me.
If I stay under 2,000 calories per day using MyFitnessPal I know I will see a 1-2 lb loss for the week. I eat lots of fruits and veggies and mostly home-cooked meals. Today I entered in all my planned meals into WW and a few snacks and stopped when I hit -6 points for the day (since I have 42 weekly points). Then I entered in the exact same foods on MFP and I still have 500 calories remaining. I need those 500 calories or I go into crazy snack seeking mode by 3pm and dinner doesn't make me full. I guess I could eat 5 apples and all the spinach I want, but those things don't fill me up. 500 calories of yogurt and mixed nuts will make me feel full! How do I make this work? If I suck it up for the week and lose 6-8 lbs (because I will) will the plan automatically adjust to allow me more food?!
So far I am not happy with SmartPoints and I am worried about having joined for three months without knowing more about this!!

heat4212 welcome! Unfortunately the more you lose the more your points drop. 30 is the lowest they will go but you will lose weeklies. Those drop in 7 pound increments. SmartPoints has been a big adjustment for many members from the previous PointsPlus plan. Many of us who double track on MFP don't worry about going into the red on SP's because we are aware of where we are at. So my suggestion is don't worry about going too much in the red. Don't forget you also get FitPoints, I actually have mine set to take from that before the weeklies. The OnPlan board has a daily menu thread where you can get some idea of how members make it work. Also check out the SimplyFilling board for some great tips! Feel free to ask questions, we have the best of the best here all willing to help a Newbie out Congrats on your 30 pound loss!! Woohoo!!

Congrats heat4212 for your weight loss.I don't know if you like almonds or not but Emerald makes 100 calorie snack packs(less than 1 oz)of different almonds, almonds and walnuts.I don't think they have any cashews.I love them myself but can't keep cashews in the house or I will eat too many. The almonds taste good to me in a container of Greek yogurt.I currently eat ff Greek yogurt but you could substitute full fat regular or Greek yogurt if you like yogurt. As Deb said use your Fit Points first if you are very active.I am not active enough to use mine but some people do.SP IMO is hard when you first start it but for me I got used to it and some people reverted to PP or Core or Simply Filling.Eat more of what you like and you will be more satisfied and as long as you are within your calories you will still lose on SP no matter how many weeklies you use.Good luck and welcome!

heat4212, I am curious as to why you are switching to WW. If you've lost 30 pounds (which is fabulous) wouldn't you be better off sticking with what has made you successful? When WW switched to Smart Points, while many people found that it worked well for them, others found it too restrictive. They stayed with older WW programs, switched to calorie counting, etc. There is no "one size fits all" program, and there is nothing magical about SmartPoints.

Thanks for all the advice and encouragement! itsrad, I joined WW because for the past few months I've just been yo-yo-ing. I lost 5 lbs in Jan and then gained 8 in Feb!! Also last year I had accountability partners. We met once a week but they all got busy and moved onto other things. I REALLY need weekly accountability so I joined to go to the WW meetings. I knew WW had an app but I just thought points were simplified calories. I guess that's old news! I am thinking based on what everyone is saying I should double track for now. Use WW and MFP and just not stress about going over on WW if I am staying under on MFP. deb & borntexan Thanks for the tip to use Fitpoints first. I checked my app settings and it wasn't set to use those at all! So I will start fresh tomorrow!

heat4212, thanks for coming back and answering my question. In addition to your meetings, keep hanging out around here also. It is a great place for support and conversation!

I hear you heat4212, accountability is such an important part of the equation. If what you were doing worked, keep on doing it. I try to stay around 1200 and usually come in at 36 points to give you an idea of how different eating styles work with this. Others at 1200 might come in at 30 daily. I was hitting my daily target on the old plan but not so much since they changed things up 😉 Like itsrad mentioned we have tons of great support here, just jump on in. I just wanted to add, at your meetings, there are probably tons of members that are doing their own variation of the program also so don't feel alone, but if you have a good leader and the members are fun, the support is invaluable too!

Smart Points program heavily penalizes sugar and carbs, so if these are important to you, WW may not be your best choice. That being said, when the program switched from Points Plus to SP, I went in the hole on points pretty much every week--but still maintained my goal weight, probably because most of my extra points were used on dairy or protein, my fav foods. I know that as soon as I start eating more sugar and high-carb processed food, I start gaining. It all boils down to finding what works for you. WW SP will guide you to the foods and portions that science currently says are the most healthy for you.
In your place, I would keep the cashews and ditch the soda (9-15 tsp. of sugar)not so much because of the # of SP, but because that amount of sugar has a negative impact on one's health. Personally, I found it aggravated my osteo-arthritis. I exchanged sf drinks for sugared soda and eventually pretty much ditched those. Water(sometimes with fruit drops or lemon), tea and coffee are my main fluids now, though I do use sugar-free sodas to mix with alcohol. Wishing you the best of luck!

heat4212, I feel you on the soda! The new WW plans are more strict. I'm on the older one - right before the green plan - on the app iTrackBites, it's the 'carb conscious' plan. I do that one because I can't handle the demonizing of food that came after it. But calorie counting works wonders too. Do what works for you! Good luck on your journey!

heat4212, Everyone is different and finding what works for you is essential for long term success. My Fitness Pal is great for tracking calories and macros, WW was/is good for many over the years though some incarnations of it are more in keeping with one member or another, I Track Bites is an app that some (including myself) use that has four free programs and two you can pay for. Most of the weight watchers programs can be tracked on I Track Bites either as-is or with work-a-rounds.
I hope you find what works for you.

Good Morning! I am new to WW per doctor's order. She recommended this program over everything else out there. I was us MFP & was doing okay. I like WW due to the meal plans that are available. It takes all the guess work out of planning my meals.
Why are some of you double tracking? What is the benefit? What is the "old" plan?
I need all the encouragement that I can get on this journey.

Hi csjoy54 and welcome to these boards!
I've used WW and MFP, and also itrackbites for older WW plans. I double tracked once or twice for a couple of days because I thought the newer WW plans - after PointsPlus - didn't really correlate to calories, and I wanted to see how much I could or couldn't be actually eating calorie-wise.
You'll get a lot of encouragement on these boards. You'll find different people doing different things in terms of weight management and programs, and a lot of encouragement to find what works best for you. Great that you're liking WW for meal planning - sounds like you've made a good choice!
You might want to post this also on the General discussion board - it gets more activity than this one does.
