Hi Folks I am trying to teach myself to crochet.
So far I've done simple wash clothes, hot pads and a few simple scarves.
My problem is not knowing exactly where the first stitch and last stitch are in a row. This leads to some bumpy ends.
Any suggestion, any good YouTube or Pinterest videos you can recommend.
My goal is to make myself a shawl but I just don't understand how you start with a circle and then branch out.
Still having trouble reading patterns, using videos the most.
Thanks for any help

for a beginner you may have picked a pattern that is to hard for you..

They do have a lot of youtubes available to help with very beginning crochet all the way up to complicated patterns. Not all the people that make youtubes are experts by any means so you have to be careful which ones you watch. Finding the first and last stitch in a row is sometimes very difficult especially when you're following a pattern because some people use the term "first stitch" differently than others. The problem most people have is missing the last stitch. Now if you were near me I'd offer to help. offhand I can't think of a specific youtube to recommend. Sounds like you're off to a great start. Just keep trying and correcting and you'll get it. Or sometimes they offer classes at craft stores.I do a lot of crocheting and I often have to correct myself.

I taught myself to crochet about eight years ago. I've never watched any You Tube videos so I have no suggestions. I tried out different stitches in eight inch blocks.
Today I like to crochet scarves using self striping or self pooling yarn to provide the variation. Although I can follow patterns, I prefer to use the same stitch throughout.
I'll look for the book I used for choosing stitches.

Please feel free to join us at the Crafters thread!!! I will dig out the books that I used to teach myself to crochet- and see if I can find any good tips that are not coming into my mind at the moment. Ruth is our resident expert, and can figure out any project- plus find mistakes in patterns that the writer did not know about. Hop over and join us. And best of luck! I love to crochet Ginny

It's on the same board,,the weight watcher board you put your post on then you pick similar interests then connections. The crafting thread is pretty much the only one on there except for this one you started. Since you can see your's you will see crafting right under it or it will be on top if someone posts there this morning. Sounds complicated but it isn't.Pick the one for this week. It's a weekly thread. We talk about many things as you will see in Ginny's intro. We are a small but friendly and helpful group

Hi hpeterson1951 - I'm a beginner at crochet too and do pretty well with single and double crochet, but not as good with the "fancy" stitches Most of the baby blankets I've made have been done just doing a large granny square. I also have problems figuring out what stitch to go in and out of and the beginning and ends of rows and sometimes I just pick the stitch that looks right and use that and haven't had many problems. I wanted to make myself a shawl too and found this pattern that I feel is pretty easy. I almost finished one skein (of 3) on it and I think it looks really pretty, so you might like it to: www.mamainastitch.com/smoky-mountains-crochet-triangle-wrap/I'm doing mine in purple. Good luck with your crocheting. I think it's a really calming craft and so easy to do watching TV or taking it with you somewhere.
