Good evening all!! Ruth, even 3 inches of snow this time of year seems early to me! At least with 3 inches of snow it will probably melt all of its own and not need attention. At least I hope so for you!! The area you are considering moving to, well it gets snow but not the severe cold, am I right? It is most definitely a lower latitude, which should help. Any luck finding a suitable house? I do not envy you going through EVERYTHING- which is pretty much what you have to do. It does force those interesting decisions, the choice if you really need something or can do without that item. I know many years ago, I had moved several boxes without unpacking them 2 or 3 times....and with that decided that I did not need the contents at all. Good to hear that you got a scarf almost done. This is for DGD, am I right? It seems as though you are making good progress getting things sorted and cleaned out.
One thing that I saw in my own life, was my mothers ability to take care of herself. My dad travelled a lot for business, and he passed when she was only 59. She lived alone for 30 years without him, and while she missed him something awful I never saw that she “needed” a man. I like to think that my sister and I saw that strength in her and perhaps inherited it a bit. Its sad to see young women make mistake after mistake out of a fear of being alone. And in that process many times they allow themselves to become pregnant, hoping to entrap the man into staying with them. Most of the time they would be better off without him.
So today I worked in the am, then Dh and I ran some errands. Got a lot done....and I got a few more errands done locally when we got back. We are having a new roof put on the house in 2 weeks, and I had to make sure that the building permit was intact. (It is). I picked up the last of the craft supplies for the little craft I am making with the 2 oldest grandkids tomorrow night, they are sleeping over here. Hope that it works out well!!! (So I guess I got some crafting in then, didn’t i?)
I put out 2 roosting bags for the little birds for the winter. THey are rather small, woven from some sort of reed, and are meant for little birds like chickadees, Carolina wrens and tufted titmice to spend the very cold nights in. You kind of have to hide the bags in the center of a dense tree so you will never see the birds in them, but will know when you check them to clean them out if any bird took up residence in them. We feed birds all through the winter....I am curious to see if the bags are used or not.
Hope that Sue did not get too much snow. CJ, were you able to catch up on your TV shows? I am sure you are enjoying the fall weather, as I am too!!! Phyl, how was your class?
Have I babbled enough for one evening? Take care all Ginny

Ginny, you can never talk to much for us. It sounds like you had a productive day and yes buying craft supplies for your grandchildren is definitely crafting. You'll have so much fun making things with them. When my son came here recently he brought crafted items that the grands had made for us. I'm taking them with me when we go to our "winter home"...once we buy one. Well still waiting for ds to be able to go look at the two houses we're interested in and that won't be until at least the weekend since this is a busy week for him. Saw one today I would have loved to have. It was a foreclosure. I called and asked about it but turned out it was already sold. It was a beautiful looking house and had a very nice yard. The neighborhood looked great and it was such a good price it was a steal. I'm not surprised someone grabbed it up immediately' Yes the weather there will definitely be better than here. As you said it does snow but ddil said that last year they didn't get any snow until Dec and not enough to make the kids happy so that sounds great to me.The only downside is it rains a lot and we're not used to rain but a nice warm spring rain is always nice
I'm almost finished with the scarf I started after finishing the other so when I get it done it will be three finished in the last two days. I have one more to go and maybe won't even have to do another because I do have one done that has a mistake which I think I can fix by ripping out two rows which I wanted to do anyway because it's too wide. If I can do that it will be my five so then I can go on to the one other thing to make for ds for his birthday and the couple things for the great grandaughters for Christmas and I'll be done with the required things and can go on to do whatever I want to work on including ds and ddil's afgan which I don't count as something required. I do want to start it so that I can take it with us and work on the blocks because they're small and would be good for taking in and out of hotels on the way.

Ruth, is the afghan you are talking about the one for Ds and DDIL with the cross on it? The afghan with small blocks would be perfect for travel, when you and Dh do decide to go somewhere or move. I am always amazed how quickly you complete your projects!! As far as your possible new location, perhaps you can avoid the rainy season by coming back to where you are now (unless that coincides with the cold/winter weather you are trying to avoid).
Got my crafting supplies out for the grandkids and am trying to get some laundry done before they get here. Dd#1, their mom is so stressed. I feel bad for her and she definitely takes on way too much. Guess that is they way people live these days.

Good morning all.
Ginny, I'm sorry to hear that your daughter is having a stressful time. This is a time where she should be enjoying her young family both the children and her dh. Children, as you know, grow up too fast and when you look back you wish that you'd taken more time to just sit and be with them rather than having to take care of stressful matters. It can be very overwhelming to take care of a household, a husband, and children and still work and take care of anything that comes up much less finding time to just relax and enjoy life.
our plan is to go where it's a little less cold and snowy for the winter and then will come back here in the summer because summer's there are hot and humid. With my dh's COPD he can't breathe well in humidity.Of course in about 3 years we'll move there permanently and he will do what he does here...stay inside during the day when it's humid...there will be a/c there that will help.
Yes the afgan is the one with the cross on it. There will be a larger cross in the middle made with blocks that look like they have little crosses in them then blocks to fit around the "arms" of the large cross and the rest is still to be determined. By that time it will be a rectangle and I need to decide what stitch or stitches to use. Maybe it will end up being a granny square type thing around that cross rectangle.I saw a pattern yesterday for a "modern granny" that I will have to see if I can find again and adapt that to my project.
I do have the seven scarves done except for weaving in ends on some of them. Two are for two grandaughters in Indy and the other five are for dd, three dgd's here and the friend of one of the grandaughters who now lives with them since her father passed away a couple months ago.
Good news on the baby that was beaten. He's alert and smiling and doing his 7 month old baby talking and they feel he will have no developmental issues from the head injury. Apparently they are allowing the mother to visit....I'm sure under supervision...and she posted a picture. He's such a cutey.

Hello Crafters
Phyl and Sue - Hope you are well.
Ginny - I'm glad you are getting a new roof on before the winter, I'm sure that will feel nice not to have any worries from the coming weather. I've noticed the birds getting back in my bathroom exhaust fan again recently (they had a nest there in the spring), so I guess maybe they are nesting again?
It's interesting what you said about your mother being self-sufficient. My mother was like that too, although her health issues prevented her from doing lots of things. There are only a few things I remember her telling me when I was a teenager and one of them was "never rely on a man to take care of you". I often wonder what made her say that to me - did she see something in me that was dependent on people or did her life experiences lead her to think that way?
Ruth - I hope the right house will show up for you. My unsolicited advice () to you is make sure that there is at least one room in the house that is not exposed to the outside or that you have a basement (even though I hate them) because that area of the country is a little more prone to tornados and strong thunderstorms. You probably already know that having lived in Arkansas.
I'm glad to hear that the baby is doing better and seems not to have any long lasting affects from the injuries. I sure hope he never remembers what happens and can go on an have a happy life.
The weather here is beautiful, in the 70s and sunny. I went out today to run some errands - make my car payment, go to Costco, Target and JoAnn Fabrics (my crafting for the day ). I bought a plastic storage container with a handle so I can use it for the supplies for my hand quilting class next weekend. I have a nice sewing basket for them but I didn't want to have to bring that to the class. I saw some pretty yarn in JoAnn's.
I found the Dole fruit cups in Costco and also some of the large brown paper lawn and leaf bags - I was out of those and glad I didn't have to go to Home Depot or Lowes to get them.
I also found some of the limited edition Toasted Coconut Cheerios in Target - I'd been looking for those. The reviews I've read say they are good. The box was a large family size one which will take me awhile to eat. If they taste good maybe I can snack on them.
I've been looking for a toilet paper roll holder that will fit into the slot on the wall, but nobody seems to sell them. I'm going to look on Amazon since I'm tired of looking in the stores. Everything seems to be a floor holder now, but I wonder if they still make the wall holder in new houses?
Hope you all get some crafting in and have a great weekend!

My mother was always dominated by my father until they were both a little older. My father died at age 58 and my mother did fine on her own. She was a very intelligent woman and I never understood why she let him control her entire life like he did.
I never heard of toasted coconut cherrios. I used to eat multi grain Cherrios a lot back when I ate things with gluten. Now I eat oatmeal almost everyday but also once in awhile I have some Corn Pops.
I'm glad you were able to find the fruit you like at Costco. I wonder if they have one in the area to which we're moving. I think they must because ds has mentioned shopping at one.
CJ, my dh told our dd that same thing your mother told you. I'm sure she knew you were very capable of taking care of yourself and didn't want you to fall into the trap of thinking that you HAD to have a man to do that. You have proved that what she knew was correct. Don't ever sell yourself short. Even on this message board only I can see that you are a very capable person.
Thank you for the advice about the tornado shelter. We keep telling our son that they need one. One of the houses we looked at (on line) did have a shelter but the two we're primarily interested in right now don't have one. We didn't have one in Arkansas but our neighbor did and told us that if there were tornado threats to come over to theirs. Fortunately there was never one in our area while we were there because I'm claustrophobic and there were a LOT of people that were going to be in that little shelter.

Good evening, Ruth ,that mustache nose warmer is hysterical! Who thinks up these patterns! Glad it seemed easy enough to make. CJ was absolutely right a tornado shelter is a very very good idea. Glad to hear that the baby is ok.
CJ, yes having that tote to take supplies to class will, really make the day easier. So glad you took care of that and also stopped in Joanns. You are right about a woman needing to take care of herself. My dad was just as insistent as my mo, that we knew how to care for ourselves. You seem quite confident and capable, you learned that lesson well.
Heard about fires in south California today, hope Meg is ok. Sue and Phyl hope your day went. Well Ginny

We had about six inches of snow on Tuesday night to about Wednesday noon. The temperature dropped into single digits. Today the sun was aging. No problem with the roads. Most of the leaves got too much cold and won't be turning any color before they fall.
Quilting yesterday was good. One of the quilters had rescued a mirror from some neighbors who just moved to assisted living. The are 91. The mirror was a wedding present. It's square about 2' x 2' and is in beautiful condition. I claimed it because several of my mirrors were given away five years ago.
Today some grocery shopping got done, and I picked up another charging cord for my cell phone. Tomorrow morning I'm having breakfast with my property manager/friend. She has just made flooring purchases for another client, and my long term friend of 25 years will be getting a really great commission for six units. Most of my original contacts have retired, but this is someone who loves her job and won't retire!

Hey Sue, Kind of stinks that you were robbed of fall leaf color by the severe cold and early snow.its tough on the trees to get snow before leaf drop, many times it causes trees to split or break branches. Did this happen on any of your trees?
The mirror must have a pretty wooden frame, how nice that you were able to obtain it. Are you planning on hanging it on a wall? Breakfast out with a friend sounds like a lovely way to start your day! During the course of life we lose many people when they move (or we move!). Bet that breakfast out will be an awesome time to catch up and share a good meal. Enjoy Ginny

BUsy weekend for everyone!!!!
The craft was a HUGE success with the grandkids. We made mason jar luminaries- using mod Podge glued on pieces of fall leaf colored tissue paper and a few small glitter metallic leaves. Of course there is no right or wrong and color placement is whatever it is....the Mod Podge has a slight sparkle to it. I made a prototype last night and I gotta say they came out really well!! Cheap craft too cause I used recycled glass jars (salsa, relish etc...). Now I am in trouble cause the kids want another craft when I sit for them Tuesday.
Got the house back in order from them. And a few things put away.
See ya later! Ginny

Hello Crafters Sue - I'm glad the snow didn't cause any problems on the road and that you enjoyed the quilting. How nice to get a mirror that was probably loved and enjoyed by the original owner. Ginny - That's great that the grandkids enjoyed crafting with you. Those luminaries sound pretty and I'm sure they enjoyed looking at them. You'll have to search out another great craft on the Internet Ruth - that crochet nose and mustache is a cute gag gift, I bet the guys getting them will like them. Phyl - Hope you are getting some crafting in this weekend. It's cloudy and cool here today, a nice fall day. I ordered the toilet roll thingee from Amazon, came in a pack of 4 for only $5.50, so a good deal. I forgot to mention when I was in Costco yesterday that I saw the cutest cake. It was a sheet cake and the top was designed with colorful fall leaves laid out in rows, so you could cut up small pieces and everyone would get a leaf on their cake slice. I thought it was a clever idea. I taped an episode of "It's Sew Easy" this morning since it dealt with quilting and I'll enjoy watching it later. The only other show I get in Fons and Porter and I don't really care much for their projects. I still need to get my sewing room table cleared off -hopefully I'll be in the mood for it soon. Take care everyone!

Breakfast was fun. I would like to meet more often, but it doesn't always work out.
We didn't lose any branches that I know of. Fortunately, there was a gusty breeze that kept knocking snow accumulation off the branches.

Ginny, you're so creative! i know the children enjoy making those lunimaries and it's great that you repurposed jars to make them with. I'm sure they'll want to make a craft everytime they see you from now on.
CJ, that cake does sound great. If anyone was going to have a fall party it would be perfect for that. I've watched Fons and Porter before and the one time a woman showed a wonderful way to join blocks by just sewing long strips of each color together then cutting them across so that it ended up being a strip of many colors. I'm sure all you quilters already knew how to do that but to me it was genius.
Sue I'm glad to hear that none of your trees were damaged but it's sad not to be able to see the colors even though out here we usually only be various yellows and golds no reds or oranges. Having been used to all those brilliant colors back in the east I was disappointed for find that there were none of those here.
After I finished that nose warmer I started on a hippo rattle for my youngest dggd but sat it down when I went downstairs to watch tv and work on a hat that I didn't have to pay attention to. Today I finished the hat but haven't got back to the rattle yet. I did go thru my stash of birthday gifts to pick out some for all the birthday people at my ds' house. This year I might be able to just take them instead of mailing but we'll have to see how things turn out. I also picked out gifts for dggds in case we'll be gone for Christmas. I'll need to get all those gifts ready before we leave if that happens.

hello,hello,and hi,
the free motion class was wonderful I would take it again in a minute. LORI is a very good instructor.
she talked about needles, thread , going slow, going fast. like I can remember it
all.tried to write some things down but then you lose some of what is being said.
she had projection set up on the wall, so she could show us how to draw and do some motifs.
she also said to use the same color on the back as we do on the front. that way that way if our tension is not right the color won't show through.(that would be up to the quilter).
Lori also said you don't need special threads or needles to do free motion.guess it depends on how you want your project to look when done.
she did talk about different threads and needles.
wish we would have gotten there a little earlier.we were in a little bit of corner that was darker. good I took my little lamp with.I like to sit closer to the front and a more lit spot. it did all work out.
lunch was great. grapes, veggies and dip, bread, soup, and any if we wanted it.
Decorah was getting snow showers about noon. leaving Iowa we had a few.
look up Lori Kennedy free motion videos.TRY GOOGLE OR YOUTUBE. NITA has watched some of her videos.phyl
