So Beto is out. Personally, I think that's a good thing because I don't think he had any chance to win, and I think it's time to start narrowing down the field. It's easier to compare candidates when there are fewer of them, and if there is no chance to be the nominee then bow out and lend your support to someone who does have a chance.

Last night on MSNBC (I think, could have been CNN) I saw an Iowa poll that put Mayor Pete in 1st place with Elizabeth #2, Bernie #3, and Biden #4. Did any of you see that? Did I see it wrong? This morning I'm seeing on the web polls where Elizabeth is #1 and Pete is either #2 or #3. The polls seem to be all over the place, and this is just Iowa, but Iowa can be pretty important. The pundit talking last night was comparing Pete to Obama in his ability to give people hope. Definitely we need hope!
One thing we learned from 2016 is that polls can be WAY off!

I can't remember where I saw this - maybe one of the major networks - about Elizabeth Warren explaining how she's going to pay for Medicare for All. Trillions from the highest income folks and corporations, etc. I just wonder if it's too complicated for the average voter to understand how getting the insurance companies out of the healthcare business is going to save costs. So many people want to keep their private insurance - or is that mainly folks who only pay for a supplemental plan?? Staying with the known rather than the unknown. No one says, "I'd like to get rid of my Medicare." If we went to Medicare for All, obviously it will impact doctor's salaries, and then you have to have a plan for paying for their tuition or no one will want to become a doc.
WONDERFUL about Mayor Pete doing so well in polls!!

conniefromct , excellent point about you never hear anyone saying they want to get rid of their Medicare. There's a lot of needless (IMO) fear out there, but it is a very complicated issue and it's not going to be easy for her to explain to people in a way that will eliminate their fears. Even supplemental plans are not cheap, but I don't understand how doing away with private health insurance is going to work because as it is now it is very important to have that supplemental plan even if you are on Medicare. The Medicare Advantage plans sound great, and for some people they are great but in my area of the country there are a lot of doctors who accept regular Medicare but won't accept a Medicare Advantage plan or at the most won't accept all of them. I'm 100% for healthcare for all, but I do still have a lot of questions about how Elizabeth and/or Bernie's plans would work. That's not saying I'm opposed to them, I just need more information. I think they can manage to pay for them, I just don't want to have to pay the 20% that right now Medicare does not cover out of my own pocket, and a large segment of the country simply wouldn't be able to do that. So how do they plan to overcome that issue? Will Medicare start picking up 100% as opposed to 80%? Also what about prescriptions?

Medicare for All just seems like an overreach. I don't think it would come to pass even if Bernie or Elizabeth were elected, but it gives Agent Orange one more thing to scare his base about. Not that it makes any difference to them whatever happens.
Y'all have seen that drug smugglers are sawing through the "impenetrable" new wall with a reciprocating saw. Also, folks are getting over with rope ladders. And the people that the smugglers are passing their drugs to through the breach are American citizens, and not necessarily Mexican Americans. Single moms desperate for money and at least a few high school football players have been apprehended. What a waste of money. As long as there's demand here, the drugs will flow one way or another.
DT isn't fazed. He just tweets that the gaps are easily fixed. That boy is conscious-free. Also consciousness-free, but that's another story.

lani, I agree that even if Bernie or Elizabeth were elected it's very unlikely that they would ever get Medicare For All passed. For one thing they'd have to have both a Democratic Legislature and Senate. Even if we get lucky and take the Senate, it would still be an uphill battle I think among Democrats. How he ever managed to sell his base on a ridiculous wall is totally beyond me. That it would work at all simply defies any logic.

Oh, I know the answer. His base isn't logical. If they were do you think he would be in the Oval Office? 😲

I was watching Reliable Sources on CNN and they counted all the miss-spelled words in his tweets. They were speculating that his base thinks it makes him more authentic. I think spelling and grammar are just more rules that he thinks don't apply to him.

I don't think it's that he doesn't think the spelling and grammar rules don't apply to him, I think he doesn't know how to spell or how to use proper grammar.

I continue to have mixed feelings about the impeachment process. On the one hand, I absolutely think he deserves to be impeached. There's no question about that for me. But on the other hand I worry that this is going to ultimately backfire on the Democrats. People have such short attention spans, and it's not going to be easy to hold their attention for the time it takes and also to make them understand why it really is important. Most people don't know where Ukraine is or really care about it. They think politics is a dirty business anyway, etc. Yet, if the House didn't impeach we're saying that this behavior is OK and setting precedent for the future. So if we care about the Constitution I don't see that we have a choice. Clearly the Republicans have thrown it out of the window and into the trash heap. Still I worry that this will ultimately come back to bite us. Does anyone else feel that way?
Once again he is threatening to pull federal aid for fighting California fires. You can bet he wouldn't be doing that if CA was a swing state. How can Republicans just sit by and let him make threats like that? How can the American people just ignore threats like that? What happens when next time it is their home?

I think you-know-who has enough attention that the voters will be out, on both sides. The Democratic nominee needs independent voters in order to prevail. That is why I am leery of an overly progressive candidate. It seems to be between Uncle Joe and Mayor Pete as far as moderates go. I just don't know if either can get it over the goal line. But I refuse to give up hope! I'm trying not to get too wrapped up in the polls at this relatively early date.

lani, I also think we need a moderate to attract the independent voters. I am also crossing my fingers that no one splits off and tries to run independently if they lose the nomination. That would be disastrous.
