Welcome! We are a group of like-minded people that gather to discuss a host of topics from weight loss, to current events. Our thread celebrates liberal diversity, welcomes new friends, and respects all opinions. We count everything from calories to points but, we never count our chickens before they are hatched.

Welcome to December! My decorations are up, gifts are bought and ready to be wrapped, went to a beautiful service this morning for the first day of Advent, and now all that's left is to kick back and watch the next batch of hearings. Guess what my Christmas wish is? If you guess that it involves someone moving away from DC, you'd be right.

Another month, another day closer to you-know-who being out of the WH. I hope, I hope!

Happy Holiday month. I do not know which Democratic presidential candidate to support.

I just can't see Bloomberg as president. There's such a huge disconnect between a billionaire/millionaire and the other 99% of Americans. He may sound better but really he's a businessman just like the JA now, ad no way is he going to raise taxes on himself and his friends/business interests without screwing over the other 99% in the process. IMO anyway.

DotRen I have those same concerns about Bloomberg. After the experience we're going through now,it's just hard to trust. Like amyrs I don't know who to support. I do think we need someone in the middle more than to the far left in order to win. We're going to have to pull in independents, and hopefully some disenchanted Republicans. I don't see either Elizabeth or Bernie being able to do that. Certainly not in my corner of the world. Of course a Democrat is not going to win period in my corner of the world.

Back to the normal routine!
Did any of you happen to catch Morning Joe today and see the poll showing that the majority of Republicans think the JA is a better president than Abraham Lincoln was? In fact better than any Republican president except for Ronald Reagan? It was enough to make me choke on my coffee! LOL! Hopefully this was a flawed poll, because to think that the majority of Republicans truly believe that would be truly mind boggling. Not only was it a surprise to see how they rated him against Lincoln, but frankly it was a surprise to see that they still rate Ronald Reagan higher because clearly the Republican party of tRump absolutely in no way resembles the party of Reagan.
Hope those of you in the Northeast and Midwest are managing well with the snow storm. Linda, how are things up in North Dakota? Still snuggled in with a good book and staying warm?

nashville11, re: that poll, what can be done with these people? I need a "puzzled" emoji. I think Bloomberg is OK (wants gun control, big on controlling climate change, and I don't think his agenda is to further enrich all the fat cats like him) but ultimately his presence will just divide things up even more. I can't see him getting anywhere. I can't envision the Dems here in Cali going for him. I almost wish someone would throw a dart and pick someone so we can stop dithering around.

Storm is over. Roads are good again, life continues ....LOL
Well, DH & I just experienced what a mess insurance coverage is in this country first hand. We have always been lucky to have coverage with his employer where DH worked for 35 years. He has been retired for & on Medicare for the last 10 years, but with his retirement benefits, we always had the supplemental & script coverage thru this employer. Last year his employer declared bankruptcy & went thru the court process & the judge/court dissolved their contact/promise to pay retired employees medical for life. So, for the first time in forever, we had to sign up for supplemental & script coverage this enrollment period. For some reason, the script part has been a pain because they said we did not have credible coverage since we both enrolled in Medicare & would have to pay the late enrollment fee for all these years. We both did have coverage under DH company benefits. So, we have spent the last several weeks, gathering info that we did indeed have coverage thru this employer for the times questioned. What a damn pain the butt! So after countless phonecalls & paperwork, I think we have finally proved we did. No wonder so many people do not have coverage in this country. If we hadn't been able to prove this we would be without script coverage. No wonder so many people die because they can't afford to pay for scripts.!!!! I'm not sure what the answer is, or if Medicare for All is the answer, but I do know that what we have now is just not working for the majority. I learned this first hand the last couple weeks. DH & I are fortunate we probably could have managed somewhat without script coverage. It would have been hard, but for some there is no question they could not. What a shame!! I hope the judge who agreed with DH employer & dissolved the benefits contract, burns in hell for eternity! It's just not morally right to break promises to hardworking employees who were promised benefits for life. Anyway, its just made me a cranky old lady for the last several weeks! I hope today was our last phone call & all is ok as it sounds as the person on the other end of the line said it would be. .....
Ok, thats my vent for the day...LOL

@lka48, it's terrifying to lose coverage. So glad it looks to be settled in your favor. Phew!
I think Bloomberg decided to get in after seeing Biden's Mr. Magoo debate performances and Warren's ascendance. I think he panicked that tRump could actually get another four years. I honestly think he sees himself as a firewall against the enormous tRump campaign war chest. I agree that his presence further confuses the already large field of candidates but, it's also forcing the others to rethink their own chances of realistically raising enough funds to keep competing. Joe Sestak (who knew he was running?) and Governor Steve Bullock dropped out this weekend. I don't think Bloomberg stands a chance but, I don't mind him spending his fortune against tRump one bit.

Linda, I'm so sorry you've had to go through that. You're right that the health insurance system in this country is a total mess. As for the company going bankrupt after your DH retired, my father experienced the same thing. He had worked so hard all those years, and then with the stroke of a pen after he had been retired for a few years the judge just drastically reduced his benefits because the company filed bankruptcy. He went from receiving a comfortable retirement to getting $350 a month just like that in the blink of an eye, and he and his fellow workers had to retain legal counsel to even get that. Elizabeth Warren is absolutely right about big corporations and the health insurance industry. Unfortunately, I'm afraid she can't attract enough moderate voters.

doordie50, Joe Sestak? LOL! Where do these people come from? I don't think I've ever heard of him, and certainly didn't know he was running. Glad he dropped out. As for Bloomberg being a firewall against tRump, I'm all for anything that can stop tRump.

Non-political question for a change: Do any of you remember approximately how many calories per point under the old PointsPlus WW system? I'm trying to count calories, but have some good WW recipes that only show points and not calories. This would have been from back around 2010-2011. I think they called it PointsPlus back then. It seems like I remember a good "guesstimate" used to be about 70 calories per point. Does anybody know if that sounds about right?

I had to laugh about the "non political question"....You mean there is a world outside of politics these days....LOL
Joyce, I guess, I was thinking it was around 50 points. 70 sounds reasonable too. Maybe go with 70 & that way you will be covered. I'm at the point, I can't remember what yesterday was like...LOL...not funny, really, but DH & I are always teasing one another about how our "rememberer" doesn't work like it used too. LOL
Once again I wasn't impressed with the WH Christmas Decorations. Maybe just because its a Trump WH. Too glitzy for my taste. I like "old fashioned, simple & fun" decorations. JMHO...:-)

Linda, I think,k you are probably right about 50. Another friend on FB thought the same as you. My "remember" seems to be broken too. LOL! I haven't seen the WH decorations yet. Will have to look for them.
