Well, got both grandkids down for their naps so I get a few minutes to myself. I did just make an appointment with the place I bought my machine at to get it serviced. Curious to see what they say about it- yes I know that they will charge more for the repair than the local dealer. But its gotta work or be replaced. No sense owning a machine if it is not reliable. Guess that gives me the next week to do some research on good machines or bad and how I want to deal with this. Its a bit disappointing, I am so close to the end of the quilt to have this happen. But it will get done in due time.
This weekends football games had me scratching my head. Of course there is still 2 weekends of play before Super Bowl participants are determined, but its looking like there is only one, possibly two teams still playing that I care about. I can think of a few super bowl combinations in which I detest both teams. But this is a crafting thread, not a sports thread.
Hard getting back into the swing of things after two weeks off. Gotta check the reviews of some sewing machines to see which ones are best liked and hold up the best. I have a lot to learn.
Take care all Ginny

Happy new week everyone. Sounds like you're back at work doing your babysitting, Ginny. I can be tiring but it's also a blessing to be able to be with the grandchildren so much Well if we crochet, embroider, or whatever while watching sport do they then count as crafting My favorites are the Chiefs and the Saints. I detest the Packers and the Patriots...one down. I don't know who won yesterday. I know the Saints were playing the Vikings and that's it. We don't get the channel they played on. We're supposed to be it rarely comes in and it's on antenna. We don't have locals on our DTV. I did some of the usual things today that all of us do...cleaning. Pulled out the stove so I could do the sides of the stove and the cupboards and the floor underneath. I wish I could pull out the fridge. I also did the bills for the month so now just have to do a little business mail and write some letters then finish up dh's laptop bag. Got the yarn today for the Cross afgan so I can soon start on the swatch piece I'm going to do to see if the pattern is going to work with my modifications. I think I'll make the trial piece into a wall hanging f it comes out ok

Ruth, what colors are you making the cross afghan in? I am so curious!!As far as football goes, the Vikings beat the Saints....and the packers play next weekend. Think the Chiefs are still in itβ and play next weekend also.
Spent a lot of time looking online at machines/prices/ places of manufacture. Not so sure I want to buy something made in China. My SInger (if its a gonner) lasted 10 years. Its disappointing as the first few years I owned it I hardly used it, so to have it die on me now is disappointing. So I will keep looking at reviews online. Problem is, to get something made in Sweden (two brands) its pricier. I dunno, I sound confused for sure. Wish I did not have to make this decision that is for sure.

hi ladies, Ruth I am hoping for the packers to go to the super bowl.it's been a lot of years.hey I live in Wisconsin.
I am not a die hard football fan. one team wins one team loses.doesn't not mean I won't be disappointed if they lost just not a hollering, screaming and and trying to analyze the game fan.first they have to make it to the super bowl.
the vikings beat the saints.you can always look up scores on the computer.
I do not care for the pats either. it is two other teams turn to go to the bowl game.nuff said.
any crafting a person does watching tv,yes that is crafting.we may be looking at our work more then the tv.
had my chiropractor appointment this am.so haven't done to much. been reading.
Don took the fiber optic trees out of the window and they are put away.all we have to do is put the table decor away. then we will be done for eleven months.
Ginny what brand of machine do you have? I stick with any dealers I have bought machines from. I bought my Eversewn 30 from a quilt shop. the shop also sells
Bernia and Babylock. a couple of their employees have been to school on fixing machines.
this shop will honor my eversewn and repair it but is not selling that brand anymore.
this is a nice size machine for going to sew days and classes.
at home I have a big brother. has decorating stitches on it. not an embroidery machine. this machine sits in one place. to heavy to carry back and forth.
there are times I would have stuck with the Pfaff brand.don't get me wrong I love all my machines..my Brother,Eversewn and my little Janome gold gem.
Hopefully this dealer will be able to fix your machine. might just need a part the other place couldn't get or may have not put in right.
sometimes I think I want To do Pat Sloan's 2020 challenge. then I think I got to many projects now.phyl

Ginny, stick with checking out dealers for machines.a dealer that you can go back to and be shown how something works on the machine, maybe a dealer who holds once a month or so many month where customers can come in and get help with their machines.
some dealers will not work on machines if you did not buy from them. they do then they charge you more.
some dealers will tell you they can't get the parts if not their brand.
it is not the fault of the dealers they are not setting the rules.it's the big wheels the corporations or manufactors telling the dealers what to do.
BERNIA,JANOME,BROTHER, PRAFF VIKING AND POSSIBLE BABYLOCK ARE GOOD MACHINES.
you are better off to take different scraps of fabric with you and got to a dealer and find out what machine is most comfortable to you. try different brands.
her I Nita's experience with ordering online. a few months ago she ordered a junki online. could not do what she wanted it to do.she watched the video everything was in japense I think.yes they had written instructions on the screen which means that made it harder to see something.when they did show something fingers were in the way.
ok when we went to Nancy's notions store closing talking to the guy in front of her ,he said he worked for a quilt shop and he works on junki.she took it up there and can't remember why it did not get fixed.
so when we went to the quilt retreat in Illinois she traded it for a janome mc7 international something. loves it.we have janome dealer's here the may work on it.
where I got my brother Steve said people buy machines other places and think because you are a dealer you have to work on that brand.
not so now days.
Steve has always been a viking/pfaff dealer. not sure why he started carrying brothers.
shortly after I bought my brother something happened with Steve and the brother company. he no longer carries brother. he did tell brother company they have to have some kind of contract with them so his customers who bought brother can still get their machines fix there and he can get the parts. phyl

I had a Brother once too. It started doing the bobbin thing right away. Gave it to ddil and she used it for awhile but had to replace it because the bobbin tension never worked for her either. I now have a Janome. I heard that they are the ones that make machines for Sears.
Thank you for the football results. I looked up the results of the Titan/Pats game online. I couldn't decide if I wanted the Vikings or the Saints to win. Phyl, I used to be a Packer fan. Not anymore. I'm glad McCarthy is gone and now if only they would get rid of Rodgers.I Brady retired I'm probably like the Patriots ok. I used to be a die hard football fan but no longer. Just watch now and then while crocheting.
Ginny, I'm thinking of making the cross afgan in charcoal and antique white and am debating with myself if I should use a little yellow as Phyl suggested, just right around the cross for a beam of sunlight effect. The cross itself will be charcoal, then a couple rows of yellow then antique white and a border of charcoal.I'll make the smaller wall hanging first though to see how it looks. I did find that I had more pound of love than I thought because some was mixed in with another yarn so I have a lot of antique white now which is great because it's so food for so many things.Gotta get busy and finish dh's laptop carrier first though. Poor guy is having a meltdown because he thinks they shorted him on his cashback rewards for his Discover card. I looked it up for him though and they say it will show up on his statement date which is the 10th. He gets so worked up about these things.
After watching some other youtubes on small quilted things I've found that there are many that I would like to make. The info on interfacing in the Annies catalog turned out to be a book for sale...no info. and the quilted crochet is just crocheting blocks that look like quilt blocks...another book they want you to buy from them. Thanks for the help though Sue.

Ruth and Phyl thanks so much for the input on machines. I refuse to buy from the quilt shop I take classes at, where they sell Pfaff and Babylok. They are great machines but I dislike the way most employees look down their noses at you if you bring in another machine for a class. That attitude bothers me. The bernina dealer is an hour from me. Where I am taking my machine for repair is where I bought it, where they sell Singer and husqvarna. And my small local shop sells brother and husqvarna. Itβs all confusing. But I know that next week when I take my machine up for repair it will be done the next day, no long wait.
Ruth I love the color scheme of the Afghan ! Phyl had a great idea to put yellow around the cross itself.
Phyl, thanks for the football update! I enjoy watching the games. Like you I would like to see Green Bay do well.

GOOD MORNING, Ginny that is wrong for the employees to look down on you because you have a different machine.
every sewer has to go with what machine brand feels the most comfortable to that person and what their pocket book can afford and what different things they want their machine to do.
where I go for sew day most have a Bernia, Babylock,
t he shop I go to Janome, and Pfaffs and I take my little eversewn so does Peggy when she comes.
I do know how you feel. at onetime I felt that way with my pfaff and little janome gem.
the quilt shop where we have our sew day I think Dave can work on most any machine. where Theresa buys her machine he is Amish guy and say he can get parts for any machine.
I seen ladies for sew day and classes bring in their little featherweights. wish I had one.
try not to let them battleaxes get to you. they give you that look tell them you do not appreciate that look from a retail employee.
I might work in the basement or do some bumin. phyl

Phyl, of course its wrong for the quilt shop to turn their nose up at my or any machine that is not something they sell.. they seem to leave my friend alone, she has a Husqvarna. Most women there have bought Babyloks or pfaffs from them. And I do know one thing, I will not reward their snotty attitude about machines by buying one from them. The shop owner is just as guilty of that attitude, and I have heard her turn her nose up at someone else who brought in a singer for servicing. Ok, I have my old featherweight- and most of its attachments. My parents bought it for me used when I was about 10 years old. The machine will sew through anything.....I have not used it in 15 years. But I know I should never part with it. They do not make machines like that anymore. My online quilting buddy has a Janome that she LOVES. Now my pastors wife is looking at a travel machine, a Janome.
So for me, distance from home for service will be a big deal. I will expand my search into NJ- which is only 15 minutes from me, to see if there are any shops that sell either bernina or Janome. The brother machines look great- but I admit to being a bit scared of getting a loaded brother, only to find that I should have spent a bit more and gotten something that would have lasted longer. Of course if my machine is repairable, then this whole discussion is rather silly. I will have that answer next Friday. I really thank you for your input and support. Well, what was the decision, working in the basement or bummin?
Got DGD here- and got some great news this am. I had signed her up for story time at the library, and got on the waiting list. Well, got an email this am, that another child dropped out and she has a spot! She starts next week and I think will love it. She is just at that age in which she will really sit for a book and the library does a great job for toddler story time. Great memories for me too, as I used to take our 3 kids there many years ago.
Hope everyone is having a great day..... Ginny

Hello Crafters Ginny - I hope you can get your machine fixed, or if not, decide on a new one. It's a tough decision to pick one, isn't it? I know you'd just like to have your machine work so you can use it when you want to! I've felt the way you have going to a class with my low-end Brother machine. Everyone else comes in with Berninas, Janomes, etc. and I have a $180 Brother But you know what, I love the machine and it works great and is all that I need. We had a sunny day here yesterday, but a rain/snow mix this afternoon, then I think it's getting milder again later this week. Just a roller coaster of weather. I went out earlier to mail bills and run a few errands and was able to get back before the rain. I finished another embroidery quilt block (2 of 6 done) but haven't gotten back to that. It takes me longer to thread all the needles than it does to do the stitching I try to thread 8 or so needles at a time, so that helps a bit. And I want to get those 4 Bowtie blocks done and also work on the table runner, those are my goals for the month, so I should have plenty of time. Take care everyone!

CJ- so glad you are making progress on the embroidery quilt block. Gee you are one of those organized folks who thread multiple needles at a time to save some work later. (I keep telling myself to do that but never actually succeed. Sounds like you are making great progress on your goals....think you decided upon a green theme for the bow tie blocks, but what fabrics are you using for the table runner? I am confident that you can get a table runner done in no time...and it will look perfect. Please do not think I was bashing your brother! They get great reviews....and are VERY well rated. I admit to being scared. The one main thing I am looking for in a machine, if I need a new one, is a large throat space so I can take on large projects to free motion. That eliminates a lot of machines from all manufacturers. And I am a little disappointed that after 10 years (mind you the first 2 my singer saw very little use), the singer might be too expensive to repair. I can sort of see where this is all heading....did some more online research this afternoon while DGD slept. Found another dealer in the next county who sells both bernina and Janome. And cause of the snotty treatment from the quilt shop (who is the closest pfaff and Babylok dealer) well I will avoid them. So you had the rain/snow mix too. Glad you got back before the rain- which is just annoying. And thanks you are absolutely right. I just want my machine to work when I want to use it!!
Ok I have bored you all enough with my machine woes. Gotta figure out how to keep myself out of trouble while I am waiting for the machine to be repaired. Ginny

I bought my most recent sewing machine,,,the Janome,,, from a sewing center store. I'm not sure what all brands they sold but I bought mine specifically so that if I had problems with it I could take it to them for help. They'd been in business here for over 50 years...Well wouldn't you know that about a year aftger I bought the machine they decided to close! I haven't used the machine much so can't say much about how it works but the few times I did use it it worked great. I think that whatever brand you buy maybe excepting the horrendously expensive ones, you can get one that doesn't work as it should. We used to go to a lot of auctions. At one of them I bought a sewing machine that I think is a Singer and it was supposedly a portable one. I is very, very old and weighs a ton. You wouoldn't want to carry that thing anywhere. It does only the very basics but it does them great. Right now it's out in my garage. I should bring it back in and use it but then I should also use my new one. The last one that I had so long that I had so many problems with was a Kenmore. And I still think that much of the problem was something I did because I'd had other machines too that I also had that same problem with.
So far today I guess I could be credited with crafting because I was once again trying to organize my craft cave. I still have more I want to do but that's all my back wouold take for today.I keep my stash of grandchild gifts in that room too and recently went thru them all to pick out the ones for the late year birthdays and also some Christmas presents for the great grands so the room got a little disorganized
Ginny, it's great that you can take your dgd to story hour at the library. Because of being read to children do develop a real love of reading. Some of my best memories are of my mother reading to me. My siblings that came after me...I was the oldest...didn't get read too and never really had a love of reading. My sister was last and again was read to because the older children, me included were much older and my mother again had time so my sister does also love to read.
