There's a lot of messages for me to reply too but I'll try to answer them all CJ, I think Ginny is correct that it is a sport weight or baby yarn ..that is a #3. Thank you for all the links and I'm going to go look at each one. I'm glad you got the sewing done on your bowties but sorry to hear you ran out of the white you need. I hope they have the one you need at the store you'll be going to. Phyl, I'm glad you did get to sew day. Looks like they needed you there since numbers were already lower. I'm glad you found what you were doing wrong on the paper piecing. No what I have isn't serger thread. It's on little tubes. I think I said cones earlier but I meant tubes. Ginny, I'm glad to hear that your dgd liked the story hour.Do you stay in the room too and listen? I read a cozy mystery series in which one of the main characters does a story hour in the bookshop where they work. It's the crochet cozy mystery series by Betty Hechtmann. Made the weekly pot of chicken soup. Ok I'm going to go look at those links that CJ posted for me...Thank you again CJ Oh and Meg, is there a particular pattern you're planning on using for Devin's afgan or are you making your own design?

Hello Crafters Ruth and Ginny - thanks for your thoughts on the yarn. I've never tried a corner to corner blanket, and it's something I'd like to try someday. I got all my blocks (for January's Rainbow Scrap Challenge) pieced today, I just need to press them. I'm going to be able to make 3 quilts from this project. The bowtie blocks finish at about 18x18 inches and I made two sets, so if I used them both in a quilt it would be gigantic. So I'm going to use one set in one quilt and another set in a different quilt - with a different layout. The little leftover half square triangles I have pieced into a broken dishes pattern and it makes a small 5 1/2 inch square - it's so cute. Here's a video of the Broken Dishes pattern: www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPG8VM-bOG8So where you see the larger blocks in the quilt in the video, my block is just 5 1/2 inches square. Hope everyone is having a good day. It was sunny and in the 50s here today I think. My weather station batteries are bad again, but I'm hoping to get them changed tomorrow when my DB is supposed to stop by. I probably need to start looking for a new one, because the batteries are going out pretty quickly. Take care everyone!

Good evening! Funny how just a week ago we needed to change the batteries in our weather station. Yes CJ- a new one is probably in order if you are going through batteries that quickly. Glad your brother will come to help you get the new batteries installed. Perhaps these will last longer. Well that broken dishes quilt is so very pretty!! Not so sure I like the wide sashing they used, but the quilt block itself is adorable. And I can see myself making one. So glad that you finished your rainbow scrap challenge. How large will the quilts be from that project?
My machine is at Joanns and it will be serviced. I looked at a Husqvarna Sapphire, which seems to be a very nice machine. Waiting for a quote from my local shop to see what to do. I already have a quote from Joanns on it. Will have my singer back on Friday- which is great so I can sew this weekend. Sunday I have to go through a colonoscopy prep (not much fun there) for a procedure on Monday. Just one of those things you gotta do.

I really like the quilt also but I too, didn't care for the wide border.
I tried to post earlier but somehow got interrupted. Yesterday most of my crafting was spending hours untangling a skein of yarn. I hate when that happens...don't we all. I did get back to what I was making which was a pair of fingerless gloves to go with an earwarmer. Did that earlier today and have started the second glove and will finish that this evening. I have three more sets to do.I finished a water bottle cover for dh. He has a couple metal ones that will definitely be "sweating" in our locale on our trip. It's too dry here in the summer for that to happen so we're not used to it. Now I have to do more of the hanging bags I started making. Tomorrow is the day it's to be warmer so will try to get to the table runner..or more of them depending on how the first one turns out.Thank all of you again for the tips and links to written and video instructions!
Ginny, I haven't had a colonoscopy in awhile and yes, the prep is the worst part. The only good part of it is that no one can convince you to go out anywhere because it's essential to stay home under the circumstances.

Ruth, hope you can get to making the table runner! Think once you master the directions on the first one you will find out they are easy and fun to make. Funny you mention fingerless gloves. At the dentist yesterday the receptionist (who gave me tooth fairy pillow directions 2 years ago) asked if I had ever made fingerless gloves. I forwarded the directions for those to her when I got home. how ironic. Untangling yarn is such a pain....best done with a good movie on or some good music so you do not feel the frustration. Monday is my 4th colonoscopy So far, the doctor has not found any polyps, but my mom and my grandfather had colon cancer, so I have to go as indicated every 5 years. The day before is no fun, but once you get there its all easy.....and over with. Its a life saving test and as much as its a pain, I hope everyone goes for one at the proper time.
Worked on the pillowcase again last night. Such a peaceful project. Get my machine back tomorrow. Yay. And DGD is here....which is great- but the sweet little one now knows how to crawl out of her crib. Such a funny little girl.
BBL Ginny.

Hello Crafters - Hope you are all doing well today Ginny - I'm glad (and I'm sure your family is too) that you are taking care of your health and hopefully you will not get cancer like your mother and grandfather. I bet you have to keep on your toes watching after this DGD, if she's already a crib escape artist I like the look of that Husqvarna Sapphire - it has a lot of nice features and a really deep throat. Hope you can get everything worked out with your sewing machine issues so you can just enjoy using one. Ruth - Hope you got that yarn untangled and you're working on some projects. It's a windy, sunny day here and temps were in the 50s for awhile but dropping tonight and in the 30s tomorrow. Guess we'll finally get some "feels like" winter weather. My DB came by today and we made quite a bit of progress on the photos, still have more to deal with. He has an idea of taking pictures on his phone of the framed photos and then putting all the pictures from his phone on a disk so we could all get a disk. He says he's done that at Walmart. So that might be what we do. I did give him a bunch to take home and I need to talk to a few other relatives and see if they want the framed pictures of their kids/grandkids that were in the house. It was fun, but a bit sad, to see some of the old pictures of my parents and grandparents. It's nice to remember the good times, but so sad that they are gone. I sure hope that some of my nieces/nephews and their children will want some of these family photos since it's their family history. For that Broken Dishes quilt, since my blocks are so small, I'll be putting a small sashing around them. I do agree that the sashing on that one I showed you didn't seem to quite fit with the quilt blocks - but it did seem to have an old fashioned look to it. The Bowtie blocks I've made finish around 9 inches square and the design I like has 4 patches put together (like a 4 patch block) so it will end up about 18 inches by 18 inches for each block and I'll be making at least 10 of them this year for this challenge. This quilt could end up being 60+ inches wide by 80+ inches long after adding sashing. I'm just making the blocks each month for now and then I'll put it all together at the end of the year. Take care everyone!

Ginny, now that the little escape artist has found out how to get out of the crib she will be keeping you on your toes learning other things that you really don't want her to know yet. They learn fast. One time when I was babysitting my ds and ddil's children while they went out of town my younges grandaugter learned how much fun it was to take the water out of the toilet bowl and get it onto the floor.Wasn't much fun for me cleaning it up. She was 16 months old then and somehow the rest of us lost track of her for a few minutes. CJ, Yes it sounds like that will be a large quilt. It will be beautiful too. I'm sure of that.I have a bunch of old family pictures and I'm also going to put some on a flash drive. I have some on one already and some on a disc. They do come out nice when you print them out at Walmart so if anyone did want an actual paper copy they could easily get one from those devices. The ones I have on them I scanned back when my scanner worked but dgd told me about taking pictures of them with a phone This morning among other things, I finished the last row on the fingerless gloves I made last night, did a few things then made another dino hat.Mine looks ok but I wondered why it didn't look quite as good as the pictures on the pattern site. Well once again I didn't read the pattern carefully enough and realized that she made her stitches in the blo. While I was making it I was thinking of back loop only and wondering why she didn't use it...well she did. So now onto a third one.Didn't take long to make though. People get intimidated looking at hats or whatever, made from graphs but it's actually easy. Here's the link. I only made one dino and centered him in the middle of the hat. mariasbluecrayon.com/2018/12/crochet-dinosaur-hat-for-kids-free.html?unapproved=2560&moderation-hash=21e4ec214c55ecbfe882c798612809c3#comment-2560

Evening ladies, today was another at Nita's. this time I do have the idea in my head. I got 3 blocks done.
before trying on my own we saved the the three I had goofed up . the fourth one we could salvaged as I cut the paper.
you can google Carol Doak paper piecing pattern mayflower.look under free paper piecing patterns. they should come up on the left of the screen. you will have to scroll down. after you see a picture of a block that say dad I think it might be the 6th to 8th one. looks like a star and has blue purple star points.
I am starting to like paper piecing.would not want to do a big quilt in pp. NITA has a beautiful big pp quilt hanging in her sewing room.
we have colder weather moving in tonight. sounds like we will be staying in this weekend. freezing drizzle and snow coming .rain and ice. phyl

Good morning all and Happy Friday, Phyl, I took a few minutes to check out the Carol Doak paper piecing, wow she has a huge amount of work online for free!! So many pretty blocks and so much that can be done with them. Good idea to stay in and stay warm and safe this weekend. From what i saw on the weather, winter is really here for lots of us- finally. Freezing drizzle and snow are no fun to drive in if you do not have to go out. Congrats on getting 3 blocks done at Nitas. I agree with you that I might not want to do a whole large quilt using paper piecing, but to do some blocks (as I did on my BOM) using it, well, it really provides nice clean corners and very precise blocks. That I do like. But its a pain having to take the paper off when you are done. Glad you are starting to get the hang of it so you can use that technique from time to time and not be frustrated by it.
Ruth, that dinosaur hat is adorable!!! Wish I had the patience to do that and switch colors to get the pattern like that. My DGS loves Dinos-but by the time I would finish that hat and make it he will be in college! Good for you to figure out what the problem is- funny what a big deal it is when you use blo- the appearance change is dramatic. Boy I bet that toilet water incident was quite something...and it is simply amazing what a toddler can get into during those split seconds when no one is watching. Thankfully that phase passes quickly but they are also so darned cute.
CJ- what a wonderful idea to get the pictures on a DVR! Admittedly I bought flash drives for my kids and niece and nephew to do the same- with the hope that I can get rid of all the pictures but they would have them still in digital form. I have only just begun the process of going through the pictures....you know how much work that is and how much time it takes. It seems wrong to get rid of the pictures, but then if no one is looking at them, well are they doing any good? Think you and your DB have a great solution. Love the idea of using a smaller sashing on the broken dishes quilt. Its a stunning block. Do you know what fabrics you will be using?
Going to sit tight on the Sapphire until I get a price quote from my local shop. Also have to see how my machine works which I pick up later today. BBL Ginny

Good morning, the sapphire looks like a nice machine. I have learned to make sure any machine I buy has the needle up and down position and the automatic thread cutter. other wise I would miss those two options. looks like the sapphire does.
not sure if I will go to wi today.we have to pick up a few things to make chili tonight.this is going to be a weekend we pretty much will stay put.
below zero temps, wind, snow ,rain and ice. might get 5-7 inches. maybe I will get the basement cleaned yet..
RUTH you are so good with knitting and crocheting. I am a self taughter. never did lean how change colors properly or how to carry colors across.
enjoy your friday ladies.phyl

Hello Crafters - Hope you are all doing well today '' Meg and Sue - Hope you are getting in some crafting. Phyl - I'm glad you are enjoying the paper piecing. Hope your weather doesn't get too bad. Ruth - The dinosaur hat is so cute! Ginny - Hope your machine is working when you try it out today. For the fabrics on my quilts, since I'm doing that Rainbow Scrap Challenge I'll be picking 4 different fabrics each month depending on what the assigned color is for the month - so I won't pick out the fabrics until the first of the month when they announce the color of the month. This quilt will take all year to make the blocks. I did go to JoAnn's today and found another yard of the white fabric that I'm using for all 3 of the quilts I'm making throughout this year. It still wasn't enough to use on all 3 quilts, but with what I had already and with this extra I have enough to use the white fabric for one of the quilts. I've already cut 75 of the 5 inch squares from the fabric I had and I need to cut 21 more squares of the extra fabric I bought today. It takes 96 5 inch white squares for each of the two Bowtie quilts. I found some other white fabric that is pretty close in design and shade to the first one and I'll use that fabric for the other 2 quilts. I have already done the January blocks with the old white fabric but I think it will blend in once I have all 12 months blocks made. I'm more productive (quilt-wise) when I have goals like this, so hopefully this year I'll be using a lot of my fat quarters to finish these three quilt tops. And I still want to work on the table runners each month and some other quilts too. Hopefully I'll get most of this done (I know I'm a lot of talk and a little action ). It's very cold and windy here and we might get some snow/sleet tomorrow, but then turning to rain. Hope your weekend weather isn't too bad. At least I don't have to go out anywhere, which I'm thankful for. Take care everyone and have a great weekend!

Well :I was attempting to send a long email and hit a wrong button and almost all of it went into cyberspace so I'm taking a break.
Phyl, making chili is a great thing to do when it's cold and nasty out.
Well I unburied my sewing machine so it's ready for me to use. Then I had a little search to find my cutting mat but I did find it and my rotary cutter. I know I could have just used scissors to cut for the table runner but the rotary cutter is much more fun. I also measure the one piece of fabric that I want to use to make dd a table runner and it's long enough so I was glad of that..I need to wash and iron the fabric. I forgot that part. I also have my ironing board ready. I have just three more rows on my current dino hat and it will be done. I decided this morning that I need to be less scattered. I look at the crochet groups and see all the great patterns and then I want to leave my current project undone but I need to stick with them, make a list and follow it.
CJ, that is a LOT of blocks to cut!! I can tell you're really feeling quiltmaking lately. Congrats on sticking to your goals and accomplishing so much!

Just a heads up, Dh is going out tomorrow so I might be a major blabbermouth here.
Phyl, thanks so much for the great advice on sewing machines. I agree that the needle down is critical, and I can see why thread cutting is an asset. (Not used to that yet). We do get spoiled by these helpful features, and the thread cutter saves thread for sure. I know from when I take classes, I can see the advantage of that, and no straggly threads on the back. Kind of hoping that you stayed home today, sounds like you are in for some nasty weather. Or if you did go out, hope your errands were run safely. And yes, I agree, Ruth is quite talented with her crochetting!!
CJ- I am so very very happy that Joanns had the fabric you needed! Even if they did not have enough white for all 3 quilts, being able to complete the one is great, and the other white sounds perfect for the other two quilts. The Rainbow quilt challenge sounds like a great project for you and will keep you busy throughout the year- and quilting throughout the year! Its so nice that, with the exception of the white, that you will be able to use fabrics from your stash.....gee your stash must be impressive. Anyway, its sure nice to hear the inspiration back in your posts about quilting! Hope you are having a lot of fun with this project.
Ruth, so how many times have I lost a post or email? Way more than I can count. So sorry whatever you were working on vanished into cyber land. Its good to hear that you are all ready to make the table runners, once the fabric is washed and ironed. (Gotta admit, lots of times I do not prewash my fabrics). I am sure the table runners will turn out great, and will inspire you to make more of them. Table runners are such an awesome way to redecorate easily.
Got my machine home and I did run it for about a minute to see how it worked. It ran so smoothly, guess it was badly in need of being serviced. Yes it was not cheap, but its nice to hear the machine happily hum. I might try to head up to Joanns tomorrow some something I saw there that was cute, and also a quick stop in AC Moore. My friend from church was there and got a large cutting board cheap. I would have stopped in today to get one but Dh was with me and was not interested in going to another store. And I was just really happy to get my machine home. We are supposed to get some snow tomorrow, so I will probably just stay home and enjoy a quiet house. Its super cold here, well for this area, and we are in for a few inches of snow. Probably a good idea for me to just stay home and sew tomorrow.
Hope that Meg and Sue get to check in...we miss hearing from both of them. Ginny

PHyl, first of all thank you so much for the compliment. You are such a kind person. I'm not good at all in knitting but I do know how to crochet pretty well I think. I learned how to carry the yarn back when I was going to the Caps for Kids meetings and making a lot of hats. I wanted them to be different so learned how to put in another color. First it was just in rows and learning to carry yarn up in the seam. Then I figured out how to add color in the middle by trial and error and believe me I still may many errors. CJ, meant to say I'm glad you were able to find the white you needed...maybe I did say that. I think I'm losing it...I can always blame that on medications Ginny,I bet AC Moore has some good things now that they're going out of business. Some of the people in crochet groups were complaining abuot them though saying that the store raised prices and are now giving "clearance prices" that bring the price back down to what they sold them for before they decided to go out of business but you never know what is true. Some people just like to complain. Ginny, we're looking forward to have you here as a "blabbermouth"
