Curious---is anyone here taking any precautions yet regarding the Coronavirus (Covid 19)?
As one who has worked in critical care units during high-alert periods concerning contagious diseases (and gone through special training to handle possible cases) I have to say this seems a bit different in that it appears to be spreading more quickly and to more areas than I have seen before. No, it's not Ebola by any means as far as mortality rate but it's far more widespread.
I have to say the way the US is responding is scaring the heck out of me. Keystone Cops and not at all humorous.
Anyway, the only things I am actively doing right now is handwashing and using alcohol-based hand cleaner when I leave a store. I am also skipping going to places like movie theatres and on public transportation (rethought a trip to Manhattan...nope, not now). A friend is trying to cancel her cruise to Italy that is supposed to leave the end of March but the cruise line says no, the cruise is still set to go so no refunds.
If cases show up here locally I will forego my WW meetings, switch to online only for a while.
Thoughts, anyone?

I'm not overly concerned, just watching the news and reading what I can. Like you, we're avoiding crowded places like the movies. Like you, the "official" lines are trying too hard to make it seem like it's not something we ever, ever need to be concerned with, and that bothers me. You can be reassuring without making it sound like "it's no big deal" because it is a big deal in many countries, and it could be here easily, too. The fact that people are contagious without showing symptoms for 2 weeks does make me more wary than of something like the flu, because the person next to you could spread it without feeling bad themselves. Kind of like a typhoid Mary situation.

I’m not really doing anything differently. I’m a chronic hand washer to begin with and I’ve taught the girls since the beginning of their lives to cough into your elbow not hands, try not to touch eyes or nose or mouth with unwashed hands or at all if they can help it.
Sounds like elderly and people with health issues seem to get it the worst and when kids get it it’s much more mild. We’re visiting their grandparents in Vegas for Easter but driving not flying. We always drive anyway but this time I’m glad we are. I stay in hotels but my exhusband had asked me if I was sure I wanted to do that. Hadn’t occurred to me not to. I’m still going to.

I have a chronic health condition so I'm already careful. Have been for years. That said I'm not overly concerned about getting sick. I am rethinking travel plans. What if wherever I am gets locked down and I can't get back into the country? SIL had a trip to Maui planned and cancelled. Her DH is diabetic.
I'm thinking it is going to spread at this point regardless of precautions. No one knows how many asymptomatic folks are walking around and will never show any signs of illness but be capable of passing it on.

We were scheduled to sail on the Diamond Princess April 2nd so I’ve been reading about it every day. I can’t imagine how bad it was for those on the quarantined ship. The trip was canceled February 15th and it will take several weeks to get refunds. Our daughter and her family were going to Italy and Spain and I hope they cancel their travel plans. That’s my greatest concern.

I'm keeping up-to-date with the information but we haven't changed our routine. So far, there are no cases in my area.

Because of my eye problem, I keep my hands washed.
Just being AWARE is all I am doing.
Since this virus has been around a while, and is on the Lysol can and wipes, I just wonder why there is no vaccine for it?

and is on the Lysol can and wipes, I don't understand what this means. This strain of novel (new) coronavirus is new. Vaccine takes 12 months or so to develop.

bee, I'm curious about the vaccine, too. What I read was that this specific strain was discovered in 2003, but it was so limited that the WHO didn't proceed with any vaccination research.

"Coronavirus" is a family of viruses (including the common cold) and COVID 19 is just one version of Coronavirus---there are hundreds and COVID 19 is considered a "novel" virus, meaning it is different from any seen before. DotRen, I read that a coronavirus similar to Covid 19 was noted in 2013 in bats living in China but the first human case was detected in December 2019. Clinical trials have started for treatment with an anti-viral but a vaccine is probably quite a bit in the future.

We are stockpiling, the idea being if we both get it and can't get out of the house for a week or two. (Want to put mild cases, don't even want to think of if we get serious cases of it. We don't have family around us, and few friends so we are on our own.) We are already hand washers. We wash our hands every time we return home. I volunteer at a hospital in health records so I don't have contact with patients but I will be following whatever directions I get from the hospital. I don't see how they can stop this from spreading since it seems to be very easy to transmit. (Oh, hand sanitizers are off the shelves around here.) I'm somewhat of a hermit usually only getting out to grocery stores and Wal-Mart. I'm assuming at some point I'll have to make a decision whether or not I go out to the stores (hence the stockpiling). fullmahina, Thanks for posting this thread.

I find this detailed map informative. gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6I am not super worried about it right now but we did decide to make sure we always had a month's supply of non-perishable food and needed supplies at home so we could limit going out if necessary. I do think it is inevitable to spread so I am thinking more about the future when it does show up in this area. DH and I are both retired (in good health) so don't really have to go out most days so it wouldn't be that difficult to stay home if we had to.
