20X more lethal than the average flu. I would question this. It doesn't seem to based on any statistics that I have seen. Maybe for older folks or people with compromised immune systems/ heart disease etc.?

Statistics can be skewed every which way depending on the angle desired so I question some of the articles’ statistics too depending on source.
From what I have read it has been lethal in older people and those with chronic health issues and compromised immune systems. In children it’s reported to be mild. In healthy adults I think it’s similar symptoms to flu but don’t know for sure. So the 20x more lethal needs more context. Is it more lethal in which age group and maybe any other details needed to provide the additional context. I’m not worried even if my kids were to get it, but I’d be worried about us passing it on to someone for whom it would be much more serious and life threatening.

DH has been all over this from the beginning. We hit the big stores to grab toilet paper, shampoo, toothpaste, soap, cat food, dog food, medicine for the kids, vitamins, and pantry staples like flour, sugar, pasta, canned/frozen veggies - not a ton but enough that we'd last about a month. We don't anticipate being trapped in the house without food or anything, we just figured we'd be able to hit the grocery store if it spread to our area and then avoid going out for as long as possible. And also, if we had to go out, anything we would need would be at our local store, nothing we'd have to drive to the big crowded box stores to get. I'm feeling pretty confident about it.
Though I can't say the same about our cruise in two weeks.

We are on the verge of hysteria here, mainly because of our close proximity to Asia and much of our economy relient on tourism, international students and our high proportion of Asian immigrants.
We’ve just had our first death here, and the first of human-to-human transmission, so it’s only a matter of time before it’s in the general population.
Panic buying/stockpiling is reaching alarming levels, and supermarkets have just introduced restrictions. Given the problem we have with Asians buying up baby formula and re-selling it themselves on the black market in China for a huge profit, the supermarkets haven’t been able to keep that situation in check for years, so no confidence in them being able to regulate the current panic.
The big items on the move are toilet paper, hand sanitizer, canned goods, pasta and pasta sauce.
My mum was always a hoarder and I haven’t bought any toilet paper, laundry or dish detergent for almost a year, and probably still have a years worth in the cupboards. I’m expecting an apocalyptic inspired crowd on my doorstep at any time bwhahaha

Haha I guess your mum was onto something! My mom’s hoarder tendencies means when she visits I have an over abundant supply of paper towels, boxed sugar free jello mix, single serve artificial sweetener packets, and canned goods.
So I’m good with those things for the next several months.
A colleague went to Costco last night and said the store is completely out of toilet paper and bottled water. People are going a little overboard if you ask me!

How much toilet paper does one need for a month? There are 3 adults who live in my house and we buy a big pack from Sam's Club and that lasts us about 2-3 months.

We go through toilet paper very slowly. Three of us and one large 20 pack lasts about 2 months or sometimes more.
Los Angeles has declared a state of emergency. Sounds like they have confirmed cases in Pasadena and Long Beach and will be closing some schools. I suppose our schools could end up closed at some point in the future if it spreads this way.

In NY a family of four has tested positive and the father is in critical condition. He is a lawyer in a firm in Manhattan but lives outside the city. One of their neighbors has also tested positive. The schools that the children in the family go to have closed. They've also discovered that there are two strains of this particular coronavirus, one more aggressive than the other.

I’m not sure I understand the water hoarding. Tap water is available.

Vitenam had an animated video about hand washing and basic hygiene to prevent the spread, and a couple of people made it into a dance.

76trojan, possibly in case of a disruption in service if workers are not going in to work?
