Ruth, hope you are able to find the genie at a decent price. Perhaps amazon or ebay as alternatives ?? I found the color on Lion Brand, but it sounds like they are pricey.
Yes, don’t know about the testing requirements in each state. One would think that a patient with several severe medical conditions would be able to be tested....lots of stuff does not make sense these days though.
Laying out the quilt to put it together- which I will begin shortly. BBL Ginny

Hello Crafters Ginny - Hope your knee is feeling better today. It's a sunny day here, but very windy. Hopefully that will die down later today. I cleaned out my sewing machine this morning - there was a lot of lint in there, but not as much as the last time I cleaned it. I also put in a new needle and I changed the blade on my rotary cutter. When I tried the rotary cutter with the new blade it was shocking how much better it cut - I had no idea the old one was that dull. I pulled out some fabrics to try to make a face mask using fabric ties. I just want to test it out and see how it goes. I'm using the MSQC video as my guide. Here's a link to it (there are 2 videos on here - one for a mask with elastic ties and one for fabric ties): www.missouriquiltco.com/msqc/tutorial/DIY-face-maskI'll see how it goes and let you know once I make it. Sounds like we might all be wearing masking when we go out in the future, but I sure hope it's not that way forever. I'm hoping to get to work on my April blocks with the blue fabrics this weekend. Hope you are all getting to work on some crafting projects too. Take care everyone!

CJ, I guess I should make some masks too although I don't expect to be going out. There are a lot of people making masks for healthcare workers. One woman on the other thread I post on is making some and putting a pocket for a filter made from vacuum cleaner bags and some floral wire so that they can be bent to hold it close to the top of the nose (masks hopsitals but have a metal piece there) but yes, we all will have to go out eventually and we don't know when this will end so having some masks definitely are a good thing.
My roomate from Nurisng school called me a couple times and left messages to I tried to call her back today but got her voicemail. She and her husband are doing ok she said in the message which is a good thing because neigher of them are well. She has MS as well as other medical conditions and he has parkinson's and also other medical problems. He's a retired physician so knows more about the risks than most. They live in ARizona and have for at least 40 years..they didn't go there to retire.
I found that I had one of the colors of Mandala already in my stash. I do have a lot of the color genie I think and have several of this color I found today which is called Spirit. I really don't need anymore yarn. Like CJ with her fabric, I have enough yarn to last for years and years although may have to be creative in mixing and matching at some point.
Ginny, how is your ankle today. I was thinking of you earlier because an unbelievable number of people were out walkning in my neighborhood today. I should be out there too but I'll do my walking indoors for now. Don't want to run into anyone that wants to stop and talk

Today has been a chopped up day! I talked to daughter in the Bay Area, and she's been sick but didn't tell me. DGD got it from her. She got it from her son who got it from Dad who got sick in Boston and either brought it home or may have taken it to Boston. DD said it's like nothing she has ever experienced before, neither cold nor flu like.
Then hb's caregiver delivered groceries and a meat order. I'm compiling a list of people for my daughters just in case. Jesse had agreed to my giving them his name last night, but I wanted to talk to him face to face about whether he would be willing to come into the house if one or both of us got sick. He said he would.
His girlfriend was with him, and she said that the hospital has an area set aside for patients that have respiratory problems. No testing is done locally. The procedure being done is test for everything else to eliminate other possibilities. The testing is being done in Helena, about two hours away. That is crazy. We have at least three times the cases of any other Montana city. DGD is not getting better yet. She's been sick for ten days, but she's not bedridden.
The numbers of cases that are being reported are way too low.
Aside from that I received an email from the Probate attorney for my sister.
Then the dishwasher decided not to work. I still haven't figured out why!
But the sun is shining! It's a beautiful if somewhat cold day. I enjoyed talking to DD, J the caregiver and J, his girlfriend. The other stuff just happened before

Sue, prayers that Dd (who sounds like she has gotten better) and DGD completely get over their infection. It sounds horrible and I am so sorry that they did not have mild cases. Hope that you figure out the dishwasher problem and that its something simple.
Ruth - so very glad that you found more of the genie colored yarn! Bet it was nice to hear from your friend from nursing school. Hope she and her Dh can stay healthy....and yes, I think you and Dh should be wearing masks.
CJ- I already found my elastic and will be making about 10 masks tomorrow. My friend from church has been making them today and says they are easy to make.
got the baby quilt squares all together- and the flannel cut for the back. The leftover flannel will be used for masks- the tutorial says if you have flannel its more comfortable on the face. That makes sense.
Stay well, stay safe ginny

Flannel is more comfortable, but the weave is lots looser. Since elastic is almost impossible to find right now, think about making ties that will tie in back. You're lucky you have some. My Thursday group started making masks for our hospital several weeks ago. They were used mainly over the N95 masks to make the latter last longer.
The dishwasher is fixed. I pulled the racks in and out, checked to make sure the spray arms could rotate, and it still didn't work! It seemed to be something to do with the right side of the door not pushing in quite as far as the left side, so I opened it and bent the top right side of the door which sounds impossible, but it wasn't. After that, the dishwasher worked just fine!
This morning I cleaned the top of the stove and left a few areas to soak. I've had a short nap in my recliner, and it's time to get back to finish the job. This is a time when I really miss J, the caregiver. He was taking care of my stove top twice a week! I have been cooking a little bit more which has created more to be cleaned up! The tops for the stove were in the dishwasher, so I fixed dinner in the microwave.
Later today, I need to look at FB. A DD sent a message that a cousin's ex died. She saw a FB message. She's been in touch with my cousin's daughter, something I didn't know. They had only met once when they were about 5-7. My other DD gave everyone chicken pox! My seven cousins and I have dispersed geographically, but when we were growing up we had dinner on Sundays at my grandparents' house, every Sunday.
I have a few masks, but I will make some. Even though I'm not planning on going anywhere for a long time.

Sue you're fortunate to have J to help although not so fortunate in the reason you have him..your hubbies health. My cousins also are scattered. Some I haven't heard from in many, many years and others it's been at least since 2001. There is one that I keep in touch with a couple times a year in email and another that I hadn't heard from but she emailed me recently. Some have facebook pages so I do look at them but don't invite them to be on my friend list because I just don't like being on facebook in that way.
My friend from nursing school hasn't returned my call and I know they are staying home so it must be that she didn't see my message. We seem to be playing phone tag.
I did get the body of my second c2c baby blanket done and have started the border. I was surprised to find that it is only 24x24 because I measured what I thought was the side before I started decreasing and though it was over 34. I must have been measuring the diagonal by mistake. I'll make the border a little bit wide but these two that I have done will be good as car seat blankets or stroller blankets or just as a blankie for baby to carry around when they get older. I'm sure I'll be making many more before the year is out. I'm looking for a special blanket to make in case my dgs and his wife have a baby.

Sue, sounds like you had a good enough day and I hope you got the stove top cleaned. I am sure you miss J being there, but for now it’s best to stay safe.
Ruth, a border on that baby afghan sounds like the perfect solution to the size issue. I am sure you will work it out. Do you think that Dgs and his wife will have a child?
Busy day. I vacuumed and got a walk in. Worked in the garden a little bit and then made 6 masks. Had just enough 1/4 inch elastic . Hope to get them to both DD’s tomorrow. Sounds like it’s going to be a rough 2 weeks. Stay safe all

I guess I should make masks. I actually have (I'm sure I mentioned it already though) some masks in case dh and I need them. I have a lot of elastic but don't know if it's good or not. I know I had to throw some away because it was too old and was cracking and crumbling.I actually liked the tie masks best when I was working.
Ginny, yes this border is looking great. I wish I had put this one on that blanket too. Can't fix that now because I wove those ends in (something I rarely do right away) and when I weave them in no one gets them out again so that blanket will have to stay as is.
Besides the baby blanket I also want to find a blanket pattern that will be really nice for my 8 year old grandaughter. She's such a sweet little girl.As to my dgs and his wife, well I guess only time will tell whether or not they will have children.
And speaking of dgs, Taiwan will soon be celebrating some holiday so will be at risk for more cases of this virus. Surprisingly they don't have many. It's said that the reason for that is because as soon as they heard about the virus in mainland china everyone in Taiwan started using masks and hand sanitizer and tried to curtail their risk of exposure. They learned lessons from SARS.I worry about dgs because he has asthma.

Good morning All. The masks I will be using when I go out- which is not that often. I have a small quantity of surgical masks here, which I am saving if, which I am praying does not happen, Ds gets Covid and we do share parts of the house (which can be limited). But probably a good idea to make some. It seems as though while restrictions will be lifted for some in the not too distant future, that using precaution in public might be a good idea for a long time.
Overall the MSQ instructions for masks were decent enough. My machine struggled a bit with the final stitching- when you are going through at times 4 thicknesses of fabric plus the elastic. They are not pretty but will work just fine. I chose to use elastic because its a bit less contact with hair- easier on and off. Of course its just personal preference. Wonder how CJ fared with her masks.

It's a great idea to save the surgical masks in case anyone in the household does get sick. The ones we make are not designed to be used to take care of people that are ill already. Plus we can make our masks in so many really nice colors and patterns so it might lift our spirits to have something nice or cute on our face and also the spirits of those around us.I'll have to look up my elastic and see if I have any that is still good. I'm pretty sure I do. Not that I intend to go out but you never know when you might have to go out for some reason.

Hello Crafters - Hope you and your families are all doing well I did make one of the masks with the ties and it came out alright. I used flannel for the fabric that goes against my face, like she did in the MSQC tutorial. But I'm reading that it's not that great a choice and cotton fabrics are better. I had to look around for some elastic. I knew I had it, just couldn't figure out where I put it. After all that organizing and decluttering I did last year I sometimes have trouble finding the things when I used to always know where they were (in all the other junk ). I did find it so I'm going to try to make another mask and I think I'll try this tutorial instead of the MSQC: www.madeeveryday.com/fabric-face-mask-free-pattern/I'm not going to leave a slit in mine since I don't have any filters, I'll just sew it all around. I like how this tutorial has the elastic on the outside while you are sewing, it's easier to see that it's straight. Jenny Doan (MSQC) did say if you didn't have elastic you might try using some pantyhose - she said we all know we have some of those still in our house even if we don't wear them anymore It's been a pretty nice weather weekend here. I did some sewing on my monthly Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks and hope to finish them off in the next few days. Otherwise I haven't been doing much. Hope you are all getting to do some crafting and other things to help you deal with this virus crisis. Take care!

CJ, thank you. that is a great tutorial on making masks. For a filter you can use vacuum cleaner bags, a/c filters, and even coffee filters could possibly give a little more protections. They still won't protect in serious situations where you will come in close contact with someone that is ill but work great for going to stores when you have to do that.
I finished the baby blanket edging and it looks great. I think next will be the sheath for my little dgs' toy sword.
I should really keep a list of the projects I do and some details about them. I started doing it many times but never kept it up.

hi girls, we are doing great. been working on the Olsen masks for Carrie. she liked it. not the easiest to sew. there is alot of hype out there about vacuum /furnace Hepa items. I did alot of reading on the computer the last 2 days and no way will I use them.
I googled what are HEPA bags and filters made out of. not knowing how to pronounce the words or spell them no way would I use that stuff.
some have glass in the product some have the stuff in them that they use to make latex paint to stay on the house.
there is a doctor on you tube who says his wife is making them and the bags are safe.another guy (another guy is pleading do not use hepa the bags can can cause breathing and lung problems.
I know grain of salt. also read coffee filters are to thin.
now they say bandanas. have you seen how thin hobby lobby and walmart's are? can see through them.sewing 2 together would still be thin.
long gone are the days of bandana's handkerchiefs dad use to use.
girl you can use elastic hair bands. Carrie got me some.these are to big. so she will get me some from big lots. these are the two inch size.need smaller ones.
they are just plain black bands stretch like eslastic.you can cut them if need be.
these might work good for the folded no sew masks. then you don't have to carry rubber bands with if they break wearing your masks.phyl

Looks like we are all busy getting into masks......and I do think that any mask (double fabric) provides enough of a barrier. The logic is that if you are out (which for a lot of us we should not be) that the barrier mask will prevent large particles from reaching your nose and mouth. Remember - even if you had on an N95 mask your eyes are still a point of entry for the virus. Guess the take home message is, we should not be out, unless its absolutely necessary.
My Dd#1 has forbid me to go out to any store. Period.
CJ- glad you found the elastic and another pattern that works. Glad you got work in on the Rainbow scrap challenge blocks. Now that you are 4 months into it, do you have a favorite block yet?
Ruth, good job finishing the baby afghan and I am glad it turned out so well. Yes, you ought to keep a log of all the projects you work on. You are so very creati
Phyl- indeed the HEPA filter bags for vacuums might be treated with something that is not good to inhale directly. I hate to sound like a broken record, but I think if we rely on these homemade masks only if you have to go out and want an additional level of protection. If you are practicing social distancing then a home made mask ought to work just fine and - its washable.
Made 3 more masks today, one more for DSIL and two for a neighbor and her husband- they are both local business people
Got a nice walk in today.....decent weather today and the same tomorrow.
Yikes, another Monday is just around the corner.
Stay safe stay well all Ginny
