No way this is the flu- I can personally name 3 individuals who lost their fight with Covid (have personal connections to one who attended my church). I just do not get the stupidity of some people. I went in the food store the other morning (wearing a mask and gloves and at 6:30 am senior hour, of which I am one). The store policy is to shop alone, to help eliminate crowding, yet I saw two couples who insisted to hog up the aisle as they passed through it. I am very careful and have made a ton of masks not only for myself and my family but also for neighbors. Its important for everyone to remember that just because an individual is out they still do not want to contract the disease- have had folks walk too close to me with no regard to social distancing. Social distancing is here for a long time .....masks are here for a long time....and lets hope and pray that effective medications and a vaccine are here very quickly.
And I live in fear daily as I have a family member who lives with me who is an essential service worker and faces covid exposure daily.
Schpuggy- I probably grew up very close to where you are.....and now live in southern NYS- another hot spot. Where I am is a bit more rural than Bergen, Essex or Passaic counties but Its still reasonably close to more densely populated areas.
I agree we have to start the process of returning to a new normal of social distancing and masks but businesses slowly opening with modifications.

I've been reading the local paper online comments on facebook and the level of "selfish AND stupid" astonishes me. Comments like "I don't personally know anyone who's even caught it, it's a hoax"; "more people die from the flu"; "if you're scared just stay home and let the rest of us do what we want"; and , I kid you not "I need to get my nails done".
Becky we're doing the same: masks any time we're out, and some extras in the car just in case. Any time Ron or JD have to go into a store, get gas, etc -they both wear masks and hand sanitize as soon as they're done touching things. Ron even wipes down the handles of the doors and gas pumps.
A local bar had advertised that they were having a concert Saturday, it ended up as a protest (guns and all *roll eyes*). The police didn't arrest anyone since the bar owner canceled the concert part, but the level of selfishness is just really shocking.

A decent air conditioning system can be retro fitted to include a HEPA filter which should capture/remove the virus. The only problem I can see is that air conditioned air is usually lower in humidity, and it appears as though this virus does not thrive in humid environments.....so low humidity is not good to keep people safe. Hey folks I would LOVE to get my hair done (but bought the at home color kit 6 weeks ago, so I can at least color it myself), I would love to have a family get together in which we are not social distancing outside, and I miss being in church on Sundays (even though its kind of cool being home for church in my jammies). I get it, people have bills to pay, families to feed....but its important to do all we can do to stay safe for everyones sake.

choney2, I get the "I need to work/I need the $$" part, but the "I need my hair/nails/wax/massage/beer" stuff really floors me.

i was rolling my eyes this morning listening to my girls' group meeting with their teacher. the teacher asked what everyone did this weekend. most answers were "stayed home, played in backyard, played games with family" etc. of course there were 2 students whose parents put up the middle finger to social distancing guidelines (and one mom blatantly disregards these stay at home orders, from day 1 and thinks this is overblown). so the one kid with the annoying mom, he and his family went to the beach. keep in mind our beaches are closed under governor's orders. and the other family went to go visit cousins in san diego for the weekend. great social distancing they're practicing there. the longer these fools go out and about to things they don't need to do, the longer the rest of us will have to stay on lockdown.

I'm trying to find the actual news story that I half-heard this morning: parents of students (aged 15-17) at a school are suing the State over cancelling prom. I think it was Nevada, but I'm not sure.

probably from a family whose mom vicariously lives through her kids' high school years.

finreporter, a good parent would choose to make this a lesson about "you don't always get what you want, learn to adjust", know what I mean?

This is it, life as we know it has changed. ITA. Until there is a vaccine, we're not going back to "normal." We have a New Normal. There are some aspects of a new normal that will be better and safer for us all, like wearing face masks when WE are sick. I've worked throughout Asia for over 30 years and they always wear face masks - it's normal - because either you dont want to spread your cold to others OR you want to at least give a little protection to yourself. I will be glad to see it become normal here too. I also hope people will be more aware of their own hygiene because let's be honest, a lot of people were pigs before this! I've lost count of how many times I've been in, say an airport, and seen women come out of a stall, straighten their hair or outfit, and then sashay their dirty ass out into the airport touching god knows what without ever washing their hands. That was normal. Now? Hopefully people will wash their hands more often and be more aware. Also, I hope that companies make it mandatory to work from home or stay home if one is coming down with something. How many times have we all experienced someone at the office, gym, store, post office - wherever - who clearly was sick or coming down with something and they were out and about spreading their germs all over the place? Being more aware of this stuff is a positive outcome of a shitty situation.
Now all that said, for those who are worried about opening up too soon - and as a public health specialist I am definitely in that category - please continue to do what YOU feel is safe for YOU. We've learned we cannot count on some of our elected leaders so follow the science and the facts, and if you feel like you are safer continuing to self isolate for however much longer beyond when things open up, then continue to do it. At this point, we have to do what we feel is right based on the science and the facts, regardless of what elected official are telling us to do. And if you're continuing to self-isolate, just know that you're not alone, many of us will continue to do this until we feel it safe to do otherwise.

And ya know what the kicker of all this is????I wish no ill will or harm on anyone and really really hope that no one else gets sick from this awful virus- but how loudly do you think these folks will be screaming and crying for help if they or a dear loved one were to come down with covid??? (I know, your fault and mine cause we stayed home) And if someone were to be upset over prom being cancelled, well then let the profoundly spoiled kiddies make their own prom- enabled by their parents who never grew up. And let them pay the consequences of a poor decision like that.
Pray for wisdom for our leaders....pray for effective treatment....pray for a vaccine....wish there was an easy cure for stupid.

Rene, these kiddies are the types whose parents took them to Disneyworld for their 5th birthday.....when ya start spoiling them at such a young age, their expectations for adulthood are pathetically misguided.

Exactly. If 200,000+ die, the government didn't do enough; If less than 100,000 die, then they did too much and stepped on peoples "rights".

i'm friends with a high school classmate on FB, and he has a daughter graduating high school this year. the mom is very upset that they aren't getting to do graduation, prom, etc, but ever since i've been FB friends with him, all i've ever seen her do is post endless school dance photos, cheerleading photos, going to the lake photos. of the daughter and her friends and boyfriend. i get posting pictures of your kids, but this was overkill as though the mom was fully living through the daugher's experience. and not in good way. it was strange. that is the type of mom i could see finding a lawyer who will sue the school for abiding by health rules in a time like this.
and of course that same family is going all over the place, hanging out with friends, having barbecues, living life like nothing is happening besides the big bad schools "ruining" senior prom! the nerve!
