Our salons which opened yesterday have to stay at 25% capacity for now.

Jennifer, we did at-home haircuts today and will do that for the foreseeable future but, if I were to get a salon cut during this pandemic, I'd wear a mask and decline the cape. I wouldn't use the armrests - I'd just keep my hands in my lap. I'd forgo the hair dryer and styling and leave with the wet hair I came in with. I'd use my credit card instead of cash. And I would tip you bigtime.

Jae, I just remembered my sister went this past week in SC - I live in NJ Her stylist had her garage set up. One customer at a time. My sister had color and cut. She shampooed her hair at home - stylist cut her hair and then put the color on. She left with the color on (short distance to her home) rinsed out when the time was right and did the blow drying, etc herself. It worked for my sister.

the stylist i go to for cut (and a separate one on same salon for color) is so good at what she does that the blow dry is not necessary to know that it will lay right. so next time i go, i will just have them highlight it, wash it out, cut it, and then leave as is. i do love the blowouts they give but i'm not willing to sit for longer than necessary.
in any case, i'm probably not going back for a long time anyway. i do my own roots so the gray is not a problem anyway. it's just the freshening up of the highlights and the trim.

...and then .. I had a horrifying thought about blow drying the virus all over the salon with the blow dryer. I don't think I am have been so paranoid in my life. I think I read somewhere, in someone's guidelines for opening up a salon that there would be no blow drying.
In the salon I go to the chairs are pretty well spaced currently. The only ones that aren't are in the shampoo area. But it should be easy enough to just make sure that if one person was there, that no one else would use the other shampoo bowl until they were done.

My ex husband showed me a NY Times article on places that are considered higher risk of infection than others. Bottom line was that any place where people stay for a lengthier amount of time may be higher risk (gyms, dine in restaurants and bars). Anyplace where people are in and out rather quickly were considered lower risk. Like fast food, curbside pickup, I’d guess salons fall somewhere in between since the service can vary.

... and dry. I never thought about blow dryer spreading the virus. Jae, can you tell if the cut is going to lay right without drying it? I’d be willing to leave with wet hair. Yes and I already do plenty of those. I find myself thinking about each if my clients and how much of a risk they would be. Most have been home, either families home with kids, dads working from home, and seniors. Maybe I am more of a risk to them than they are to me.

As long as everyone in the salon is required to wear a mask and hand washing/disinfecting is frequent I would think that will help minimize the risks. I do wish they’d wait to open things up once they see 2 weeks of declining new cases but in the absence of that, and if you’re forced to go back to work then all you can do is mitigate the risks as best you can. And stand tight to your rule. No mask, no service.

Scouring over the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology's reopening info.
I'm not sure what more we can do, it's all laid out clearly.
This is one heck of a position to be in, when would we be safe? 6 months? A year? 2 years? Ever?
I'm not a risk taker and I am a rule follower.
No peace of mind at all.

Jennifer , I have a question. How easy, or difficult, do you think it will be to cut someone's hair if they are wearing a mask? Maybe someone with long, or longish, hair where you're not cutting around the face and ears might be easier than say a man, where you are cutting close to their face?
I guess there is a possibility that salons could open in New Mexico on May 15. That is unless our governor extends the stay at home order, which many of us think she should. I haven't talked to the guy who cuts our hair (mine, dh and dd) to see if he's heard anything from the owner of the salon he works at to see what they are going to put into place and how comfortable he feels about all of it. I know he's anxious to get back to work.

Jennifer , I have a question. How easy, or difficult, do you think it will be to cut someone's hair if they are wearing a mask?. I'm playing this out in my mind.. the mask will have to be unhooked from around their ears and they would have to hold it over their nose and mouth. I realized today that when I'm shampooing color or rinsing a perm (rare these days) but I have always given my client a clean towel to hold over their face so I don't splash on them. I think I'll do this for everyone now, shampoo before a cut too.

Jennifer,- sending support and good vibes. My hair is long and when I do color, highlights, was and trim is can easily take 2 hours. I won't be going in for a long time. DH trimmed my hair and did a pretty good job. I trimmed the bangs. The color is close to my own so those roots aren't too noticeable but the highlights and grays are. I've decided to just embrace my grays (for now) and not worry about it. I was one who stretched it out as long as possible anyway. My salon's chairs are not 6 feet apart, the driers are right next to each other and so are the hair washing stations. Good luck my friend

IF I do go back (and it is a big IF) I will opt for 10 minute color (Schwarzkopf), a cut and no blow dry. The whole thing will take no more than 30 minutes.
Still wondering how I will look as a gray-head, lol.

between the highlighting application, processing time, washing it out, toning and toning-processing time, washing again, trimming/cutting, blow-out and style, i can easily be at the salon for 4-5 hours.
the only time i can shave off from that is not having them blow it out and style it at the end (which is more just a nice luxury than something that has to be done). but that is the shortest part of the entire process.
i figure i'll just keep doing my own roots for the time being and will go back to the salon in a couple months if we're allowed to go back. the mask i use shouldn't interfere with anything since the loops go around my ears, and is not a tie-around behind my head or neck.
