finreporter , The reason for the Blue Flu is in response to the way the police have been treated with everything going on in the U S today. Defunding is a big issue right now as well as the way the police are being treated on the job. If we don't have police protection here where we live we won't be going out on the 4th.  The reason I posted this is to make people aware of what may happen that day, it just may not be safe to travel that day. What would happen if you got in an accident with no police on duty?

yeah i got all that. i just think it's ridiculous. defunding (aka reallocation of resources) is a big issue and i fully support it. and some people have been treated very badly for centuries now. that's where the anger is coming from. i highly recommend watching the film "13th."

to clarify, i don't think we need NO police. and i don't think all police are bad and should be treated badly. but i can guarantee you that on july 4th we will not be left in any town or city with no police, so nothing to worry about.
i'm not going out for 4th of july because i don't want to be near people and risk getting sick so i'll just be at home anyway.

We won't be going out for the 4th either. Pancakes on the Plaza, which we attend every year, was cancelled this year. The city fireworks show (which we don't go to) was cancelled as well. In "normal" times we would have had a party, but not this year.

finreporter, What is "13th" about, this same issue? Let me know if you see its going to be on TV. But is the anger from a long time ago our fault?

i'm not going to engage in this level of a discussion here but the anger "from a long time ago" is ongoing and hasn't stopped. we don't get to say that it's not our fault and wash our hands of it and be done. there is so much work to do, from everyone who is hopefully willing to participate. here is the link about 13th. www.netflix.com/title/80091741i also added the link for where it can be watched on Youtube, because Netflix is encouraging all to watch it, not just their subscribers. it is very powerful and eye opening. www.youtube.com/watch?v=krfcq5pF8u8

In "normal" times we would have had a party, but not this year. i know, i'm really sad that it's not "normal times" either because we normally go to our friend's house for an all day party and to watch the nearby fireworks from their neighbor's backyard once it gets dark.

We are also very sad we cannot see our fireworks as they canceled them a long time ago. The fireworks here are set off on our north pier and are just stunning on the lake, we can see them eight blocks away on our porch. They sync music with them. Four years ago our north beach was packed with wall to wall people and an out of town group came in and started a big fight, the police cleared the whole beach off just before the fireworks, people were arrested and told not to come back here. We have our share of problems in our small town as we are a big resort, boats, festivals, biking, trails and our town of 6000 becomes much larger with the many people who come here in the summer. If we have problems our police call in several other police in the county, Grand Rapids as well as police from our casinos. We have a very beautiful town we love.

this year we'll just have to forego 4th of july celebration. we'll just end up in the backyard, swimming and hanging out like any other day.

On the 4th we will work in our gardens because that makes us happy, have a nice lunch and go to beach if any parking space. We may go to the condo because we miss our kids and there are usually several people around that live there to talk to.

sounds great! gardens make me happy too! i would love to update some of my backyard landscaping (which is great as is, very green and lush, but i want to switch out some greenery for california native plants that have a tropical look). until i get to it, i'm still happy to have what i have! green everywhere!

@finnreporter,
We put too many gardens in when we were younger and could take care of them but at this age we just can't take good care of them like we used to. My advice don't put in to much you can't take care of when you get older. Gardens look easy but require a lot of work which we don't always understand when we plant them.🤗

My dd mentioned awhile ago that she wished we were back in our house in California.....with the swimming pool. It would be nice to have that since we're staying home.
