Speaking of fireworks we are having a problem with fireworks in the Northeast. Seems people from New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut are driving to Pennsylvania to load up on fireworks from the big firework stores down there. They are bringing up large quantities and then reselling them in states that ban them. I've heard recordings of what it sounds like in parts of New York City at night and it almost sounds like there is a war going on.

bbbearsmom, I have been hearing that too. Not in my neighborhood, just on news reports. Seems like a combo of a ton of fireworks that won't be used on the 4th plus boredom.

We had fireworks going off in our neighborhood last week but it stopped because we think police may have been called. Here in our town you can set off fireworks the day before, day of and day after a holiday, its a fine if you get caught of $500. We have a great police department with a lady chief who believes in 0 tolerance.
I read an article that the sale of fireworks has gone way up compared to other years as people are buying larger amounts because most towns are not having fireworks this year because of Covid. Our 4th of July fireworks here on our pier was canceled because of high water on the pier and Covid.
I believe there will probably be more accidents with these fireworks this year then in past years.

We have such a severe fire danger here that fireworks are banned. Yet, there will always be some fool who feels they have to set them off.

@finnreporter, We put too many gardens in when we were younger and could take care of them but at this age we just can't take good care of them like we used to. My advice don't put in to much you can't take care of when you get older. Gardens look easy but require a lot of work which we don't always understand when we plant them.🤗 i don't even take care of my own now. i have a gardener that comes to take care of things and plants things for me as needed and prunes/manicures everything. i don't have the tools or knowledge on how to properly care for a full front, side and back yard full of greenery.

finreporter, You are so lucky to have your own gardener. It sounds like your yard is beautiful. I never thought I'd be a gardener until retirement, we both love being outside and enjoy the flowers like tree lillies and dahlias. This year we don't have dahlias as we got to the store to late, they were sold out. Our tree lillies are just starting to bloom, so beautiful and smell so good. Hope to post pictures on here soon.

i don't even take care of my own now. I never did, really. We have very large front, back and side yard. My mom was an avid gardener and we bought her house when she downsized. I attempted to maintain it, gave up, did a major landscaping and have had outside help to maintain ever since. They currently come every week. We tried every other week, but it wasn't satisfactory.

mine comes once a week too. he went on vacation a couple weeks ago and so he missed a week and wow i hadn't noticed how much of a difference that makes. everything is so tidy and wonderful when he comes once a week. i appreciate the upkeep! it's a nice luxury i'm willing to pay for. the previous owner had used him for 25 years doing a once a week maintenance and so i wanted to keep it going and ensure he didn't lose out on income, plus he's really good. when i had a request from a new homeowners insurance company regarding my trees touching the edge of the roof he and his wife came out and took care of it for me. they did an amazing job and it looked great and homeowners insurance approved the policy based on the pictures of his work.

My husband does a lot of work in the yard but we have someone for the mowing, trimming, mulching, planting the big plants and trees, and raking leaves. Last summer my husband put in a new lawn directly in front of the house. We got a huge load of dirt to fill in because the tree roots were showing.

You ladies are lucky to get good help that can take care of your landscaping! We would hire help for our gardens but we've been there done that. Its really hard to find someone to work in our flower beds that do them like we do. We're really behind this year because of a late start from Covid and just getting to old to do all that work. 🤗 We are thankful for our great lawn service.

i love lawn and have a big one in the front yard but i really need to get rid of it. i need a more water friendly yard since we don't get much rain. and my yard is such that i can't actually see it from the house, because the previous owners had planted tall palms and some other trees and bushes to line the edge of the yard next to the driveway and so the lawn is visible from the street view but not from my own house. so at this point it really doesn't even make sense for me to have it and keep using up water (in the automatic sprinkler system) to keep it looking nice. i love CA native drought tolerant plants so may try to do something like that at some point. i have a mid-century modern ranch house (not as good as this one!) but this is the look the previous owners may have been going for because it's got all of these plants below and a big thick section of ivy, but not sure why they didn't just fill in the lawn section with other plants rather than a lawn. i guess it was the style at the time. my palms in front of the house are much larger though. but i really want to fill in the lawn with more of something like this (tight bunches of these types of plants) while leaving all the rest of the trees and plants intact.

Fin,
Your yard sounds beautiful, so green!
Our yards here look so different from yours in regards to plants. Many people here don't have any plants like we do. We are lucky to live in a really nice block where people keep their yards up.
We have a two story house with a basement so it's a lot of steps which I can't do. It would be so nice to have a home on one floor. Old age came upon us so fast, we weren't prepared for it.🤗

that actually was a huge reason why i went in search of ranch houses when i was house-hunting (plus i'm a sucker for anything with the palm springs mid-century vibe and this house fit the bill perfectly! i live in a neighborhood designed by one of the famous mid century modern architects from the 50s.
i broke my foot 6 years ago and even using the crutches to get up the stoop steps was annoying before i got the hang of it. so when i looked for a house, i was hopeful to find one that had not even one step, not even the stoop. all is flat. i figured in the chance i injure myself again, plus as far as i know i will be in this house til my old age, i may as well get a single story ranch style so that it feels big and spacious even without a second story.
i definitely love our southern california landscaping. especially in the part of town i live in. green everywhere and we live at the base of the santa monica mountains (on the valley side) and they are so beautiful. it feels like camping without having to camp. perpetual glamping!

Fin,
You have your beautiful landscapes which we don't but I feel so lucky to have our beautiful Lake Michigan. Earlier this morning we had a beautiful rainbow out on our lake, absolutely stunning especially out on the lake. A couple weeks ago we had a double rainbow the opposite direction which went all the way to the ground on both sides. Not sure why all the rainbows. Do you ever see rainbows where you live?
We have people that put a glamping hotel out in the middle of their blueberry field. I believe they were charging $300 or more a night but there were beds for six or so and breakfast in the morning. Not sure how that's going, we haven't heard. They were featured on the cover of Midwest Living magazine a while back.
