Day 3 – Eat Sitting Down
Today’s assignment is to learn to always eat sitting down, no standing and eating allowed. When we don’t sit down and eat we are less conscious of everything we put into our mouths (who keeps track of the samples at Costco), when we sit we can do a better job of monitoring what we eat instead of mindlessly munching/grazing as we walk about the office or our kitchen. Beck points out you’ll feel more satisfied if you have all the food in front of you and you see what you are eating.
Do you think eating sitting down will make a difference in your consumption of food? Do you usually sit down to eat, or do you still stand and eat sometimes?

I usually always sit down to eat, the exception is when making dinner and I will sometimes eat my salad while standing up and tending to the food cooking on the stove. I think when I eat my salad sitting down it registers more than when I eat standing up while doing something else.

I was going to say I never eat standing up BUT remembered that I chose to eat my plums over the sink because...they drip and are messy and I didn't' want a mess all over me and in a place other than the sink
I don't eat standing up...can't think of the lst time I did.
Also...sitting in the car eating something I just bought from the grocery store - like candy, ice cream, whatever - is probably not the same as tracking the meal BEFORE sitting down to eat in the dining room.

That habit was against the rules when I was growing up so it’s kind of ingrained. Occasionally I’ll eat a piece of fruit on my way to the table.

I usually sit down to eat but once in a while will eat a small piece of fruit or cheese for a snack standing up. I agree with luuvinlife, when young we always sat down as a family to eat, ingrained in us.
Would like to share from the Mayo Clinic Diet book one of their habits to break is NO TV while eating and only as much TV time as time you spend exercising No screen time on computer, phones while eating. I definately spend a lot more time watching TV then I do exercising! I don' get on my phone or computer when eating. Studies show that watching TV contributes to increased weight - you aren't moving and there's also a good chance you may be sipping or nibbling on something. Your thoughts?

mac, a Beck rule that we will get to is to eat without distraction. I confess I never bothered with this one. Other than family meals as a child I have always eaten with the TV on, a book or a magazine on the side. I had my biggest lifetime weight gain when I was 18-19 living without a TV or newspaper. Even Beck says eventually eating with distraction is going to happen. I am such a foodie I have no trouble focusing on my food and savoring every single bite no matter what else is going on. I think the idea is to try to eat mindfully if that is not something you currently do. I eat meals and snacks sitting down. I will scarf crumbs standing up.

mac, As lani, said we cover eating with distractions on one of the days. Beck wants you to eat without distractions so you learn to eat slowly and mindfully, once you do that she says you can go back to eating with distractions but keep an eat on how you are eating. I find that if I concentrate on eating my food without distractions it registers more and it is easier for me to feel satisfied. Also when you eat without distractions you can pay more attention to when you feel satisfied from eating and can stop.

Hello everyone
I do not eat while standing up but do eat while watching tv or on computer.

I sometimes eat a piece of fruit by the sink, a mango for example, because it's messy, and so that does count as eating while standing up! I also, just yesterday, ate some chips standing in the kitchen, as my not so healthy lunch, after a stressful shopping trip and a long disinfection time wiping down groceries. So I do it, but not often.
I am more aware of it now, so that's a good thing.

surfgirl, I would consider eating the mango over the sink as acceptable since it is so messy like cathygeha, and her plums.

mac, no need to apologize! I was just bringing it up so you know it will be covered in more dept later. I've done this a dozen times (maybe) so it's not like it's a spoiler

surfgirl , I would consider eating the mango over the sink as acceptable since it is so messy like cathygeha , and her plums. Acceptable, yes most definitely! But it still means we DO eat standing up so I want to acknowledge it. I mean, there are plenty of folks who manage to eat plums and mangoes on a plate while sitting down...

bbbearsmom, lani, Thanks, appreciate your comments that I may comment and ask questions. 😀 I'm not easily offended, taught 6,7 and 8 graders for 30 years, my husband always tells me I had good teachers!
