CJ- so sorry that you did not get the results you wanted with the hourglass block quilt. A couple of thoughts come to mind....and you have done so much quilting that I am sure you are already considering options. Block placement is huge and perhaps those less than soft blocks can be relocated to where they are not so impactful. Also what border will you be using? The right border can unify the look. I would lay the quilt out- including the “offensive” blocks and walk away from it for a day. I have also found it helpful to take a picture of a quilt- get that picture on the computer so you can see it clearly. Don’t ask me why but it does . I found it helped with the layout of my BOM. And yes some quilt designs seem more conducive to the scrappy look. My quilting guru does scrappy within limits. Don’t think she ever goes completely scrappy. I did see A scrappy quilt at a Quilt show (it was an antique) think just 2 inch squares but there were hundreds of them- and hundreds of different fabrics. Very striking indeed. Have you ever made a log cabin quilt? Its on my list of quilts to make....just make sure you are not too hard on yourself with the block placement.
Ruth, that is sure good news that the sword pattern is well written and easy to follow. Some folks sure do have that talent to put instructions on paper. And others sure do need help doing that. Too bad you had to guess your way through the granny rectangle bookmark. How many more bookmarks do you think you will make?
Looks like I am entering another hot week. I wanted to build a firepit fire last night-it was just too warm and sticky.
Gonna try to get a walk in before it heats up outside. G

Hello Crafters Ginny - Thanks for your thoughts/suggestions on my quilt blocks. I will just take some time before I decide how I'll join them together for a quilt. I may split them into 2 groups, or something like that. I have accepted that making scrappy quilts doesn't really work for me unless I stick to one or 2 colors. I have made a small log cabin quilt wallhanging/table topper size back when I first started quilting in the late 1990s. It is purple and yellow I bought the Creative Grids Log Cabin Ruler a few years ago and would like to use that to make another log cabin quilt some day. It's going to be hot here for several days too, and I'm not looking forward to it. It's only low 90s, so I'm not going to complain. I think we only had a handful of 100 degree days in Jun/Jul so it really hasn't been that bad this summer. I'll be checking out the blogs at Kathy's Slow Sunday Stitching but otherwise just doing some things around the house. Hope you all have a great day and get to do some crafting. Take care!

CJ- Ok by now you all know I am a bit obsessive.....but I do want to mention how very helpful taking a picture of my BOM was to help me see that a few blocks needed to be moved. Not sure why it worked so well, but it did. It might help you- but then it might not. You have quilted long enough and also have a well defined eye for what you like. You will do what is best for you. I checked out that creative grids log cabin ruler and it sure looks like a handy tool to me!! Wonder if you could also use that for a courtyard steps quilt- some similarities in concept of cutting there. I like the log cabin quilt design better however.
Its hot here today and I think we are in for heat for a few days. Yuck. Got lots of inside stuff I can do to keep myself out of trouble. I just do not like the heat, that is all. Think I am going to sand sheet rock a little bit and then read or watch some TV. Got some big stuff I want to do around here, but its Sunday and I don’t like to take on big projects then.

Ginny, I'm sorry to hear it was too hot to make a fire in your firepit. I know you like sitting outdoors and enjoying the fire. Fall will be here before we know it and there will hopefully be plenty of evening when you can make fires. I just hope it doesn't start with winter earlier. I hate sanding things. It makes such a mess. Do you use a mask so that you don't inhale the dust?
CJ, I know you'll find a solution but in the meantime it's good you're taking time away from that particular quilt. You may suddenly come up with great inspiration on what to do.
I spoke way too soon on the pattern. The sword part was great but as soon as I started the shield part there was a mistake. I knew it was a typo but many would not have known what to do. She said "ch2. sc2 into the second st from the hook, sc2 in the next stitch." Well with a ch 2 you don't have a next stitch. Then this is what she had next which really confused me. Maybe I'm reading it wrong. Here's what she said
Row 1: Work 2 SC into the 2nd CH from the hook, Work 2 SC into next CH. (4)
Row 2: (Repeat Row 1) CH1, turn, Work 2 SC in first ST. SC in each ST across.
Row 3: (Repeat Row 2) CH1, turn, Work 2 SC in first ST. SC in each ST across.
Row 4: (Repeat Row 3) CH1, turn, Work 2 SC in first ST. SC in each ST across until you reach the last ST. Work 2 SC in last ST.
So by saying repeat row 1 it looks like you do 2sc in the last stitch in each row also even though after she said rep row1 she typed out those other instructions. She should have left out where she said repeat row one and repeat row 2, etc and just left her written instructions. Luckily she has a video so I was able to find out what she actually meant but I only remember the video after pulling the shield front out 3 times
