Monika- I had so much fun making dresses for my daughters when they were little. And one year I was totally nuts enough to make pajamas for my kids (I have a son also) for Christmas. I can still see the adorable Christmas puppy patterned flannel I used. Totally agree with what Rene said about the singer- my singer was prone to collecting lint in the bobbin case area. Two ways to remedy that is to purchase a vacuum cleaner attachment kit (less than $20) to allow you to vacuum into the bobbin case area (never blow into that area, always vacuum out) and to have your machine serviced annually if you use it. I loved my singer (still have it, I have a confidence quilter) and got 10 years of reasonably heavy use out of it. (Made a bunch of quilts). I think the availability of a Singer dealer ((Joanns also supports Singer) is a real asset and for me that would be a huge selling point.I have two friends with Janome, and they love them. Of course you will decide what is best for you. I do know that as an early owner of a new machine- things can get hairy until you figure out how to use that machine best. That happened with my brand new Husqvarna - and I was SO glad that my Huskie dealer is a 5 minute drive away.
My name is Ginny- mother of 3 and blessed with 4 grandchildren. I quilt.....crochet and embroider/cross stitch. I love to share crafting projects with my grandchildren.

Sue, so sorry I neglected you in my posts.....Have not had much contact with the news- have the wildfires calmed down or are you still seeing a lot of smoke. So very very sorry that Dh gave you such a rough day. Being a primary caregiver to someone who is unable to think clearly is so challenging, and for the most part, you get little relief. I hope that today is easier for you and much less stressful. Settling an estate is such a painstaking process. Its good to hear that you have good professionals working for you who can conduct business for you. I well remember what comfort it was when settling my moms affairs having a great attorney and real estate agent (the real estate agent was an angel). Take good care....stop in when you can. Hope that the smoke is not so much that it makes walking the dogs a problem. G

Monika, should you decide on the Singer, check out www.sewingmastery.com. They have instructional videos for your Singer 4411 (from my own research that is a well rated machine). I used the videos there to help me out- I got my new machine during the Covid lockdown and was unable to get much help or instruction. The videos were super helpful and easy to follow. Unfortunately- that web site has no Janome videos. I know this is a daunting decision and I struggled with it a few months ago myself. Ginny

Hello Crafters Ruth and Sue - I hope you will be safe from the fires and that they will go out soon so the smoke will go away. Please take care. Monika - Both of those sewing machines sound like good choices. The Singer one looks really nice. I couldn't find a picture of the Janome one, but I'm sure it's good too. Please let us know what you buy and how your sewing adventures go. Years ago I saw a cute little girls dress made from a tee shirt and all you did was add 3 rows of fabric ruffles to it. I really wanted to try making that since I have a ruffle machine foot for my sewing machine, maybe some day I will. Ginny, Phyl and Rene - Hope you are doing some crafting. I finally pieced together the two practice blocks from quilts that I'd like to make. I really like both of these blocks and they go together very quickly. I'll post some pictures in a new post with links to the patterns, which are both free. Take care everyone and have a great weekend!

Here's a link to the Royal Blue quilt pattern. I really like the fabrics from Laundry Basket quilts too. www.andoverfabrics.com/Quilts/Royal%20Blue.pdfHere's my practice block with a picture of how the whole quilt top looks (just done with 2 fabrics). This one would be really easy to make.

The smoke is even worse today. I can only barely see an outline of the mountain. We were going out to take care of one errand but maybe won't go because of the smoke. I don't know yet because dh is napping right now.

CJ- both blocks are both so pretty!! Do you think that you will make a quilt using each block? Just wondering what your game plan is.
Ruth - so sorry that the smoke is so severe where you are. Did your plumbing parts arrive yet?
Probably won’t get any crafting done today. Been out all day and I just got a text that our 4 legged feline mouse trap has found a victim. Not exactly what I wanted to hear but at least she is earning her keep.
Have a good night all Ginny

people thing I have alot of stash I do,Theresa sil, and friend mary jo does.

There have been some major lightning strikes (7000-12000 in 72 hours) , drought conditions and off shore gusty winds in California.
That's our biggest worry with dry T storms. So far okay here.
Tonight the sun was red from all the smoke. Can't see the mountains at all.

Sue that has to be heart breaking- seeing the red sun and all the smoke....plus losing sight of the mountains.. Yes, I know lightening strikes in dry conditions can start fires...and arson can also be a factor. Makes you wonder why someone would deliberately start a fire?? But then there is much in human behavior that makes absolutely no sense to me either. Hoping and praying for some rain for your area- which I guess is perhaps the best way to resolve this issue.
Gee Phyl, sounds like Nita has her own Joann fabrics in her house- between all those machines and fabrics. Thanks for the heads up on Christmas fabrics at Hobby Lobby! Don’t think I will get there this week- perhaps can catch the next sale.
So this past week my grandkids saw me working on the pillowcase (embroidery) now they are l hoping I can make some for them. Yikes!! Not sure if I can get 6 pillowcases done by Chrismtas- I also have to get those two Christmas quilts done for my DD’s.... Did not get much sleep last night and am hoping to sleep better tonight. Got 4 days of hot summer temps and then it looks like fall like weather. Looking forward to that. Finally one of the charities I donate to is accepting donations....already have a box going and I guess straightening up and down sizing will keep me busy while we still have hot weather.
Take care all Ginny

Hello Crafters - Hope you are all doing well today Sue - I hope things don't get any worse for you. I saw a map of the smoke cover from all these western fires and the smoke has spread all the way east and north to the Dakotas and south to Texas (not sure if it's just in the atmosphere or actually visual). Ginny - I love those Andover fabrics too. Hope you can get those pillow cases made. I'm guessing they are embroidery ones? Have you ever made the fabric ones? I love this tutorial from Crafty Gemini and have made several pillowcases using her instructions: www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAomYjHzUQkI don't have any plan yet for quilts using those blocks. I'll have to look through my stash to see if I have enough of a fabric that would work. When I was buying a lot of fabric years ago I would just buy 1 yard. Now I realized that it's better to buy at least 2 yards and if it's a background type fabric to buy 3 yards. That's what is needed for most of the quilt tops I make. Phyl - I'm sorry you couldn't open that one link for the quilt pattern. Here's a link to a video of the designer making the quilt and also a link to the pattern where you can download it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAomYjHzUQkwww.laundrybasketquilts.com/online-shop.html?store-page=Norway-PDF-download-p143582415I started back working on the Oh My Stars quilt this morning and finished most of the snowball pieces that are required for the star points. Now I'm ready to start sewing the rows together. I'd like to get this top done so I can work on something else. Hope everyone gets to do some crafting today. Take care!

I think the smoke is clearing! I can see the mountain better. My oldest grandson lives near where Sue is and posted a picture of the red sun "with hair"
We didn't end up going out yesterday after all and will go at the end of next week when it's cooler.
CJ, you do post the nicest links and the greatest pictures. You are truly talented in quilting.
Ginny, how is your weekend going? Did you dd#2 get her new house all arranged yet?
I'm still working on the second shawl. It's larger than the first because the dgd I'm making this one for is turning 14 in Nov and I'm sure is adult size. So I'm making it a size for me and I'm sure that will work for her. ..
I think all the plumbing parts are here now but it's too hot for dh to be underneath the sink so hopefully he waits till next week for those cooler days. Luckily we have water on this level of the house even though the kitchen sink water is turned off so it's no problem to go into the bathroom to get the water we need for cleaning, etc. The sink can be used so I can wash the dishes in the kitchen with no problem.
I still have a bit left to do on this shawl so it will probably take me all weekend then I need to figure out what I want to work on next. The first shawl still needs it's pockets put on too.
Have a great weekend everyone and Phyl, I hope you're feeling better.

CJ- in my opinion it would look really cute to use two different colored (but coordinated) fabrics for the quilts- the unifier would be that the fabrics coordinate well and the same neutral/off white fabric is used. I know you will figure out something pretty. Its the great thing about quilting we take fabrics that don’t necessarily seem like they go together and make them look amazing together. Well, at least you do that!!!
Ruth, indeed plumbing is a sweaty job, glad that Dh is waiting for cooler weather to get the plumbing repair done. The shawls sound so pretty and I know the DGDs will love them. I would imagine adding pockets is not too much of a big deal for you. DD#2’s house is adorable. She has decorated it on a dime and done such a good job. It still needs a lot of TLC but the living room/ dining room / kitchen are well on their way. I am so very happy for them. So glad the smoke seems to be clearing.....hope that the fires go out too. G
