The Y is opening this coming Thursday. Shortened hours, limited number of classes, masks and they will limit the number of members in the facility.
Has your gym reopened? Have you gone back?
I miss using the recumbent and upright bikes and am hoping to feel comfortable enough to go there.
What are are your thoughts on going back to the gym.

My gym opened awhile ago. They have totally cleaned it, moved the machines farther apart and have measures in place to keep everyone safe. I have not gone back and don't plan to. I am continuing to work with my trainer twice a week out at a park. She has told me, and also one of my neighbors who uses the same gym, how nice it is and how uncrowded it is right not. Personally I still don't feel comfortable. We are staying in most of the time, limit contact with others, and still don't eat in restaurants.

Thanks Luanne.
I guess I’ll just have to wait and see. I still do a bit of exercise, I walk and sometimes exercise to a dvd - but I miss going to the Y.
I go to my favorite restaurant just like I did before lockdown. They did things well there and I feel very comfortable. I’m hoping I feel that way at the Y too.

I find I'm not getting the amount of aerobic exercise I was before.
We still haven't gone out to a restaurant. Currently restaurants here are only open for take out and outside dining. We don't feel comfortable even going for outside dining. We do takeout instead.

our gyms in los angeles are still closed. even if they were open, i wouldn't at all risk it by going. i, too, miss the gym but i am not willing to risk my health by going. which sounds so strange since the gym makes you healthy, but i'm not risking catching covid in an enclosed building with central AC and no one wearing masks while working out. when we work out, we breathe out harder and heavier, meaning way more droplets are in the air. no thank you!
i hadn't gone to restaurants either until a couple weeks ago i went to one with my friend (they only allow outdoor seating, not indoor dining in CA). so while i did that the one time, i would stick to take out if i don't want to cook. wouldn't make it a habit to go back to restaurants at this time and definitely not an indoor one if they were open. to me that's just foolish and playing russian roulette. if people don't mind the risk, that's fine, but the risk isn't just our own. it's everyone else we come in contact with who didn't choose to go to the gym or restaurant.
for working out, i ended up buying 15 lb dumbbells and a 12 lb kettlebell at the beginning of the shutdown. i also looked up on IG and pinterest other body weight exercises to do and so i've developed my own 5 day a week weight routine and a walk in the hills about 4 days a week (the walk is usually about 2 to 3 miles but yesterday was 4 miles and always with hills to make it harder).
i do miss the stair stepper at the gym and the full on weight equipment. i used a lot of the cable machines. but for now it seems to be working. on the rare occasion i have seen a friend, i have been asked if i've been working out so i'm guessing the routine must be working just fine for the meantime.

I miss my gym friends, dance classes, weight and cardio machines at the Y. However, I won't be going back. I do walk 4-5 miles daily. I haven't missed a day since the shutdown in March. Thank you, Fitbit ! ♥ I have some very light weights 3LB 5LB and 1 lb ankle weights. It's a major drop in my activity routine. However, being in an enclosed room with people breathing heavily and sweating doesn't seem like a great idea to me. I also have to commute on a subway to get to the Y. Which is another thing I rather avoid. Also I would feel very uncomfortable wearing a mask while doing the weight and cardio machines. It's just not worth it for me. I'll see how things shake out come next spring.

I've mentioned before that I have been working out with my trainer two mornings a week, outside at a park. Due to the fires in our area and horrible air quality I canceled with her on Monday. She texted to let me know that the manager of the gym had told her that during this period he was going to let her use the back room (which is where they usually hold classes) to work with her clients that normally work at the park with her. We would need to have our temperature taken, then could proceed to the back room. I wasn't able to do that this week, and I'm still trying to figure out how I feel about it. It would just be she and I working out in that room. I'm hoping the air quality will improve by next week so we can meet outside. I'm still not sure (and neither is she) what will happen when the weather gets bad. She's said that she only had 3 or 4 clients who have been willing to go to the gym to work with her, the rest of us are using the park.

honestly if i were given that choice i'd probably skip it and not do a training session in a single enclosed room with someone, unless we both were wearing masks. but not sure how comfortable you would be working out with a mask.
i went on a hike with my friend last weekend and i hadn't seen her since the lockdown. we wore our masks the entire time. it was so uncomfortable and hot but we weren't willing to risk it. she gets tested regularly by her doctor since she has a few health conditions she was born with.

You also have to check if the gym has installed the proper HEPA filiter for filtering Covid. It's not just a regular HEPA filter. NYC is requiring them in all gyms. The concern is not only the room you are in with your trainer but the rest of the air that is being circulated throughout the facility. The worry is that the virus can travel in the air-conditioning system. This is from NYC's website: "For facilities with central air handling systems, ensure central HVAC system filtration meets the highest rated filtration compatible with the currently installed filter rack and air handling systems, at a minimum MERV-13,
or industry equivalent or greater" More info at this link www.governor.ny.gov/sites/governor.ny.gov/files/atoms/files/Gyms_and_Fitness_Centers_Summary_Guidelines.pdf

The room is quite large, so it wouldn't be a small, enclosed space. Yes I'd have to wear a mask. That is a state mandate. I've been using a face shield when I work out, it's much easier to breath than with a mask. I have no idea about the air handling systems. I know they did a lot of work before they reopened, but I have no idea if that was part of it. I'll check with my trainer in case this becomes a possibility again. At this point I prefer to work with out outside.

Mine opened up back in mid-July (I think). I gave it a few weeks before I felt comfortable going back for classes.
You have to sign up for the classes and they have limited the number of people in each class (it all depends on the room). So far so good. I always try to grab a spot in the very back row. I'm sure to clean any equipment I use before and after use and have my own hand sanitizer. If I ever feel it's too crowded (people coming in who haven't signed up) or not safe, I'll leave.

I think my Y reopened and then closed and I have no idea what their status is at this point because I quit my membership a few months ago. They could never really keep it clean because of assholes who would never wipe down the equipment after they sweated all over it, and the staff were VERY 'conflict' adverse, so they would clean up after people if you complained, but they would never actually confront a member who wasn't following rules. So I had zero confidence that they would keep me safe in a COVID world. I had been walking nearly daily, but about 6 weeks ago someone told me about a Pilates studio that was closing a few of their locations and selling off the equipment, so I called up and was able to purchase a nearly new Pilates Springboard. So now I have it installed behind my bedroom door and I can just close the door and do a Pilates workout at home. There are so many online videos that I can use to follow as well, there really is no reason to pay through the nose to go back to a studio once this is over.
I'd highly recommend trying to put together a little gym routine that you can do at home, in your yard, or a nearby park, it's just a lot safer right to do that right now than to risk someone else being able to keep you safe in a gym environment.

i miss my gym so much but i'm not willing to risk it. our gyms aren't open in LA anyway, but i'm limiting my risk to the "have to" things not the "want to" things. i haven't even gotten my hair done yet. as much as i hate to skimp on my self-care and beauty routine, the only beauty i'm willing to do for now is to dye my own roots (which i always did anyway), to do my gym routine at home with weights, and to pop in for botox at my doctors office once every 8 or so months. since i just did that a month ago, i'm good probably until covid vaccine is in full effect. i also do my own facials and acid peels, my own manicure and pedicure and my own waxing of body hair.

I miss my gym too, but I'm not comfortable going. And I think dh would kill me if I went, lol. I have been working out with my trainer twice a week and doing a stretching program at home the other days. But I miss the bike and the treadmill. I'm struggling to keep my weight stable. When I was working out more I could be more flexible with what I ate. I always said I was exercising for health, not weight, but in truth the weight maintenance was a bit benefit. The stretch program I'm doing is designed to assist with strength and flexibility. As long as I can maintain those, I'm good. Once the weather turns and I'm not able to work with my trainer outside I'm not sure what I'll do. I know she's trying to figure it out as well as many of her clients have not gone back to the gym.
